watched day 1 so far. SHO/Shingo was awesome. I wasn't feeling it as top 5 MOTY though, so i think i'll give it a rewatch some time soon. lee/ishimori was disappointing. the undercard matches were mostly fun.

el phantasmo and robbie eagles badly need new finishers.

actually, finishers are becoming a huge pet peeve of mine in wrestling, especially with how many wild spots you see in matches these days. it just feels off that in, for example, a dragon lee match you'll have a spot where he hits a nasty looking reverse rana and like three killer knee strikes right to the head in a row for a nearfalls, or even a one count!, but his okay-looking orange crush finisher is supposed to be a one hit kill. it would be nice if sometimes the spots in matches that actually looked like real match-enders could end matches.

sho/shingo was meh. sho's strikes are awful, and given so much of the match was him going toe to toe with shingo in the strike game, it just kept dragging the match down more and more. shingo being this big hoss of a junior definitely doesnt help weaker offense look any better. very large disconnect for me and the majority opinion for this match.

one thing about sho is he seems to hit his lariats very lightly. when you're working big lariat spots in your matches regularly, you want some force.

definitely was lacking vs shingo, though even his chops and slaps looked lame. whole match all i kept thinking was these look more annoying to shingo that hurtful.

i think a lot of that is just cause of shingo's build and the kind of junior he is and they portray him to be, cause against dragon lee everything looked much better.

rocky/ospreay was fantastic. rocky felt in it and on the cusp of winning way more organically than sho did against takagi, which were talking points throughout both matches. the whole 'this is sho's coming out match' fell flat on it's face to me.

who's the black guy doing commentary? i cant tell if he's good or annoying yet.

Moxley is the US Champion. Sucks for Juice, but no way was Moxley going to lose with all the attention he's getting. It was a fun match. Moxley is a lot of fun to see here in the NJPW style. Good look to him now. Juice is great, but he's had a bit of a blandness to him. Not sure what's going on with him, but it'd be great to see Juice get an electric run in him.

i'd also very strongly recommend watching Ren Narita's matches against Romero, Ospreay and Phantasmo. a lot of people rated robbie eagles vs. will ospreay very highly. dragon lee vs. tiger mask and douki vs. will ospreay are two of the better less talked about matches. kanemaru vs. shingo was really good too, probably kanemaru's best new japan match of his suzuki-gun run.
