    Chernobyl

The premiere for this was tremendous.

Faces peeling off, systemic deceit, fallout cascading over the unsuspecting, and this wreckage of a ground zero site acting as the underlying supervillian.

A gripping horror film depiction of a nearly unbelievable actual historical event. Sobering and terrifying.

HBO, Craig Mazin, and Johan Renck absolutely nailed this kickoff episode.

So ya, anyone else give this a watch yet?

I watched the first episode. It is good but as expected its incredibly grim and harrowing.

It's like a body horror movie, except its based it reality which is a lot scarier than anything somebody could make up.

I actually felt a bit sick after watching it.

Incredible show. Second episode was great also but it’s going to be hard to top the atmosphere of the first

Thought it held the tension about as much as it could with the material it had to cover. Gripping television.

Episode 2 ended exactly where it should have. When those guys stepped into the water and the credits hit I was like NOOO!

Those men that went in to drain the tanks... man. Bravery I can't even imagine.

as great as the first two episodes were the last two were a big drop off in quality. way too much shoehorned in melodramatic political commentary. i guess you can't expect anything else from a british production about russia.

It looks like a Russian media company called Amediateka was also involved with the production.

Based on a cursory look, it also appears that Russian media outlets are applauding the show as well. I don't really know what you're taking issue with.

Care to elaborate what you're talking about?

I've been listening to the Chernobyl podcast and the director doesn't sound like a dude w/ an agenda to smear or make distort. The show sounds pretty dang accurate of the happenings, and he does even mention certain characters that were written for the show.

Would you rather go around town killing contaminated pets or take your chances as one of the 90-second roof clearing brigade?

Seems kinda obvious, but after staring down that litter of puppies ... goodfuckingrief, man.

Yeah, the killing of the pets was a real gut punch. I've never been this hooked by a mini series; it's just such a horror to witness, but so dang good at the same time.

This show deserves all the awards.

What an ending. The acknowledgment to the real people hit right in the feels.

I'm 2 in and I'm fascinated by this show. I was always fascinated with the whole situation after seeing that sci-fi movie Chernobyl Diaries or whatever it was called. The whole Cold War and bio weapons and all that stuff is just something I've always been interested in. Nuclear bombs, chemical warfare, to say it a 3rd time: fascinating.

Russia Is Making Its Own 'Chernobyl' Blaming America for the Whole Thing

Alexei Muradov, director of Russia's upcoming Chernobyl movie, told the Moscow Times that the story will be based on a conspiracy theory that "Americans had infiltrated the Chernobyl nuclear power plant" and likely had a hand in the explosion. "Many historians do not deny that, on the day of the explosion, an agent of the enemy’s intelligence services was present at the station," Muradov said, according to the Times.
    Lol.

Let me get in on this.

    LOL

For fuck's sake. And this was something the show was kicking around the first couple episodes. Some assumed it was the Americans. Fucking sabotage for fuck's sake. And remember, these people supposedly helped Trump get elected......

But damn, the conspiracy theorist in me is also, in a quiet voice going, maybe we did.....Maybe. We. Did. Comrades.

the political commentary was very overwrought. they could have just let the story speak for itself. i still enjoyed the last three episodes but the first two were definitely on a different level.

it's also pretty lame that the "composite character" they made was just this morally perfect, courageous, always right, saves the world avatar.

Feel like that finale had the most satisfying display of exposition as I've ever seen in a program. Thoughtful, meaningful, poignant, efficient. Precise and wonderful bow tied to the end of an already terrific series.

I liked that they left the exposition until the end too. All the way through I’m impressed that they didn’t just explain exactly what happened, I appreciated the human drama but felt that it was lacking the documentary style explanation of what actually happened so that I could leave the show fully informed on something I vaguely know about but probably not as much as I should. I thought the way they did do it was perfect.

Tying it all up with the consequences of lies was perfect. And the shot of the fake Mickey Mouse. Trying to emulate the West but something is always a little off. "Cause it's cheaper." Great mini-series.

This was the first mini series that I've actively rewatched over and over again.

I am very late, but I finally watched this, and it was superb. I really loved it, and I ended up reading a lot about Chernobyl during and after my watch-through. Very interesting and tragic stuff.

I don't know about anyone else, but I thought it was a complete necessity to re-watch the opening scenes of episode 1 after the finale finished. It was like a perfect loop. Jared Harris is the man in this and in Mad Men. What a chap.
