    Joker (2019)

I think this looks really good. This is separate from the DCEU and could be the start of its own new film universe. If this is a success (and barring bad review I don't see how it won't be), Batman could be next to be rebooted. I wonder if Bruce Wayne will show up in this film, probably not with an actual cameo because that would require them to pick an actor, but perhaps by name.

That kid behind the gate that Arthur is forcing a smile on is probably a young Bruce Wayne. I'm guessing, obviously, but that looks like the gate of Wayne Manor.

Looks very good. That quick shot of him walking down the hall with the flowers was great.

Age-wise, that's interesting (if it's indeed young Bruce). We know they want to have the next Batman be young, but if he's a kid in this movie then that would mean there's gotta be a 10-15 year gap between when this movie takes place and when an adult Batman comes into play. Which would make Joker (who's already middle aged in this movie) even older. Not that there's anything wrong with a 50 year old Joker, I suppose.

Of course there are a lot of variables. First off we don't even know that a Batman movie will be made in this universe. And that scene in the trailer could take place in a flashback, or there could be time jumps in this movie.

yea but as part of which film universe? my impression is it won't be part of the Wonder Woman/Aquaman universe since they already have Batfleck, so wouldn't you think it would be part of this universe?

I am interested in this but I do not know if I want it. Joker has never really had a background story and part of me wants to keep it that way.

dc has already said they're not doing a continual, shared universe anymore and concentrating on individual stories for the foreseeable future.

Eh, this looks okay. I think it's going to rely heavily on his performance and I'm assuming it could be polarizing because he's going to face comparisons to Ledger. Overall, it didn't wow me that much but I appreciate the fact it could be interesting.

This is really just an "Elseworlds" story. You don't need to think of it as official canon.

true but I would still wager that we will get a crossover if the Joker film is a box office hit. it's just odd to reboot Joker and Batman separately. it's like if they made a Ren movie where Stimpy had a cameo, and a Stimpy movie where Ren had a cameo, but each movie was in its own universe and not connected.

they sucked so bad at creating the DCEU that I get why they're focusing on individual films but I also can't see them turning down the potential billions of dollars they could make with a shared universe. and they don't need to explicitly set it up like how Iron Man had a set up for the Avengers right off the bat. all they have to do is not do anything to contradict the possibility of a future crossover. they would be dumb not to leave open that future opportunity.

Well there is a lot of King of Comedy references in there.

Looks ok, Im sure the performances will be good but I expect it to be far too long.

The trailer to me seems to suggest that this is going to be a study on depression in someway.

Martin Scorsese was originally going to be a producer on this. That, along with De Niro being in the movie, seems to indicate that King of Comedy was an influence. I'm seeing a lot of Taxi Driver as well.

Joaquin Phoenix isn't a franchise movie guy, though. I think this being a one-and-done was why he signed on.

Looks good, although I expect this to be a small story w/ no much happening. It's focusing heavily on how much this guy's life sucks.

Thomas Wayne is the guy on the television screen denouncing the Joker. Brett Cullen is playing him. Apparently he's supposed to be an antagonist of sorts.

Its hard for me to imagine anyone but Ledger as Joker. This looks better than the Leto Joker but im not a big fan of origin stories for villains, I dont wanna feel bad for villains I want them to just be total dicks because its who they are not what society made them into.

It’ll probably be a boxoffice success but get mixed reviews from critics.

It's funny to me hearing people talking about the comparisons to Heath Ledger that Phoenix might receive but the same thing happened to Ledger with the Jack Nicholson comparisons. To be honest, it was probably worse for Ledger because his list of movies weren't exactly getting people excited.

That's the thing people will just have to deal with. I compare every Batman to Michael Keaton, even the ones before him, because to me he's the God Emcee of Batmen.

This movie looks awesome. Joker is someone who always has that sympathetic element to his character. Even Jack Nicholson, you sort of felt bad he got fucked over by his boss. This could possibly be the best Joker story we've seen but idk, it'll be tough.

How cool it would have been for Brad Dourif to play the Joker instead of Jack like Tim Burton wanted.

Or for that matter to see him play Scarecrow in the third movie before Tim left the franchise and we got body armor nipple Batman instead.

Nicholson was the best Joker. Keaton was easily the best Batman. Bale was the best Bruce Wayne.

I would say that West was #2 both Batman and Wayne.

And huge LOL at the fucking dickheads who consider Hamil the best joker because he voiced the cartoon. Honestly, those people are fucking dickheads.

lol. I would love to see him portray the Joker in a physical sense but he's so fucking short it's hard to imagine him in that role. He's only like 5'4". Probably why he was more suited for The Trickster on the 2 Flash shows.

But I do have to say in terms of vocals, he is the best Joker. Cesar Romero might be slightly better. But when I'm reading the comics, I hear Hamill, nobody else. Probably due to the fact comics are drawings, animation so that is probably why more than anything.

GBF you are fucking insane. Hamill is the standard Joker. Not Nicholson, Romero or even Ledger. I even argue that Mask of the Phantasm might be the best Batman movie, period.

Dismissing Batman: The Animated Series solely because it's animated is bone-headed, though. I understand if animation isn't your cup of tea, but the show has received universal critical acclaim.

i don't think he's dismissing the animated series at all. but cartoon voice acting can be missing a ton of nuance and there can always be a slight disconnect. i dig hamil, love the animated series and the arkham games are my favorite video game series ever, but I'm with GBF when it comes to thinking 'hamil is the definitive joker' is a wack ass statement. for most of hamil's performances i dont feel the menace or the twisted sadist in it. it feels like a theatrical performance all the time, even during the times when it doesnt make sense. during the times they've tried to tackle the really dark joker material with the animated cast, i never really buy in. part of that is cause he developed a voice and personality for a, albeit dark, children's show.

Ledger's the definitive Joker for me. Love Hamill, but in the end he's not on screen.

The trailer for this looks surprisingly good for me. The only movie I'm anticipating more this year actually has Hamill acting on screen.

Mark Hamill's Joker is the best Joker, followed by Heath Ledger...
I don't even consider Jack Nicholson to be a Joker performance, let alone a good one. He just plays Jack Nicholson in every single movie...

I don’t get the Hamill thing. I can understand enjoying the character but its not fair to compare a voice actor to someone who has to physically portray the character, develop the voice and look all while trying not to just be a version of Jack Nicholson’s Joker. What Ledger did with the Joker was not just a great version of the Joker it was a great acting performance overall.

Yeah I mean if we're talking best voice actors for the Joker, Hamill all the way. Anyone who watched the Batman where it had the Joker with dreadlocks knows this to be true lol.

If Hamill was purely the voice, no animation like we're listening to a Joker radio show or even a fucking podcast, sure he would be in the mix a little because his voice alone would have to create an image in your head that embodies what you think should rep the Joker. But like you said Tim, and others have said, there's more to it. The body language, the imagery, the facial mannerisms, those are things that Hamill doesn't have to worry about.

And IMHO, if we don't give a shit about height, I think he would make a fantastic live action Joker. He is an amazing actor, that's why he's so good at the voicing of the character.

It's Jack Nicholson with the volume turned all the way up, which just so happens to be similar to certain incarnations of the Joker.

Is it just me or if you pause the Joker trailer @ 1:33 it looks like a tribute to Heath Ledger's interrogation scene?

I thought Jack Nicholson vs Batman was great.

Christopher Walken vs Batman not so much.

I have a feeling they're going to swerve us w/ something, like in the end Joker will actually save Bruce Wayne and his parents. I dunno.

We need a straight up weird dude to finally play the Joker. This guy is on another level of weird, or he's the greatest troll since Andy Kauffman. Either way Phoenix is the right guy to pull this off. I love the director saying he didn't want to put dude in the comic book world but bring the comic book world to him. That's genius.

I mean, a guy killed himself getting to that level to play a great Joker. The sacrifice almost amplifies the greatness of the role. Almost like the irony in Christopher Reeves being paralyzed from the neck down, I think that took his greatness as Superman to another level. Like when an artist dies and their music is suddenly even more incredible than when they were alive.

I know this film is in a separate universe and the trailer does look good, but having just a Joker backstory with Jerome/Jeremiah Velaska leading up to what happened Gotham would have also been cool. Would love to see their childhood documented.

Having not read any of the fake or possibly real scripts, I feel like this could be a movie about the concept of Joker and not about a person. Leaving room to keep Joker an enigma. Fully expecting Joaquin Phoenix's character to die, and some kid (Ledger) picks up his mask from the trash. This isn't Joaquin Phoenix playing Joker this is Joaquin Phoenix playing a clown with issues. Give me an original story. There are hundreds of variants to Joker let this be unique. It's time that they bring that to the live action movies. I doubt moving forward films and comics will draw reference to this film. I hope we get more movies doing one shots.

Plenty of positive reviews so far. A few have talked about it being a film filled with ideas but no clear point or statement. But there seems to be universal praise for Phoenix. Beware of plot spoilers in a lot of them, so maybe stick to the general summaries that are going around if you want to go in completely cold.

    Empire - https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/joker/

As Arthur/Joker, Joaquin Phoenix is astonishing. Phillips has said he had a picture of the actor above his screen when writing the script and it's a belief that has paid off. Phoenix inhabits Arthur: having lost weight for the role, he looks thin, frail, hungry. Shadows carve out his exposed bones. His physicality is precise — the way he moves, shuffles, runs, sits, smokes, shrinks. His usual intensity is on full display and it's captivating, even overwhelming in moments.

Bold, devastating and utterly beautiful, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have not just reimagined one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but reimagined the comic book movie itself.

    Variety - https://variety.com/2019/film/review...ps-1203317033/

Phoenix is playing a geek with an unhinged mind, yet he's so controlled that he's mesmerising. He stays true to the desperate logic of Arthur's unhappiness.

You're always aware of how much the mood and design of Joker owe to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. For a filmmaker gifted enough to stand on his own, Phillips is too beholden to his idols. Yet within that scheme, he creates a dazzlingly disturbed psycho morality play, one that speaks to the age of incels and mass shooters and no-hope politics, of the kind of hate that emerges from crushed dreams.

    Hollywood Reporter - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/re...review-1235309

Built around a credible spiral from lonely outsider to deranged killer, it's as much a neo-noir psychological character study grounded in urban alienation and styled after Taxi Driver as a rise-of-the-supervillain portrait. It's arguably the best Batman-adjacent movie since The Dark Knight and Warner [Bros] should see mighty box office numbers to reflect that.

The must-see factor of Phoenix's riveting performance alone — it's both unsettling and weirdly affecting — will be significant.

    Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/film/201...oaquin-phoenix

What a gloriously daring and explosive film Joker is. It’s a tale that’s almost as twisted as the man at its centre, bulging with ideas and pitching towards anarchy.

Having brazenly plundered the films of Scorsese, Phillips fashions stolen ingredients into something new, so that what began as a gleeful cosplay session turns progressively more dangerous – and somehow more relevant, too. Gotham City is aflame and they’re rioting on the streets. And a rough beast is slouching towards the TV studio to be born.

It does look like a solid movie but I generally hate origin movies. I’m not a fan of “this was a good person until x,y and z happened” theme id prefer they just be evil from birth. I hate the look of this version of the Joker, not as much as Leto but maybe what we see in the trailer isnt the finished product? I will probably still watch this out of curiosity when it ends up on HBO.

On one hand I am glad this isn't the traditional Joker appearance on the big screen. On the other, I have no doubt "Batman" is going to make an appearance. We already know Thomas Wayne is in it, the trailer showed what I believe to be a young Bruce Wayne. So we're getting him, but not in the traditional sense lol.

I have to also say at one point I did agree with Tim about the look, I was the same way about Heath Ledger's look. But the more I see it, the more I'm really really really digging it. You can only do the same thing over and over and over before it becomes a little bland. Leto's Joker wasn't ideal, honestly I wasn't a fan of his look and I'm still not a fan of his look but I get it. It's like if someone created the Joker in 2017 lol. The face tats, the teeth, could have been worse they could have also given him dreads like that animated series awhile back.

Thought the movie was an Elseworlds kind of take on the character. I'd love to see more movies like this one made. It was pretty slow for the most part, but the last 25 minutes were fantastic. I didn't want it to end since it was getting good. I felt depressed most of the time. What an experience. Had a rollercoaster of emotions. Cinematography and sound was on point. And you can really see how much Arthur was pushed to the brink and not only the repercussions of what he did, but what he feels about it. Overall, it was a movie that if it wins awards for I'd say it was deserved. Especially Phoenix. Never watching it again.

    Great movie.

Joaquin was phenomenal and would be my Oscar pick right now.

I don't really want to call it a DC movie (it didn't even do that itself aside from "inspired by DC characters" in the end credits), but it would probably be the best thing they've put out since The Dark Knight to me. It's very different and that's very refreshing. The slow burn for the bulk of it was excellent.

Saw this earlier today. Went in with massive expectations and thought it was ok, not great like people are saying.

I thought Joaquin did a great job, but it was like I was more admiring his actual acting ability rather than feeling what he wanted me to feel. Its like there are moments I'm supposed to feel sad for him, and at times afraid of him, etc, and I didnt really (strongly) feel the emotions I think I was suppose have felt. But at the same time I can take a step back and say his acting was pretty good. If you get what I mean. It's kinda hard to explain.

As for the story, IMO it was too short. Joaquin was great to watch and had more to offer than the 2 hours we got. This needed a longer story.

I'd rate it probably a 7.5 to 8.0 at most.

I didn't think it was that great. I will admit that I hate villians origin stories that make them sad sacks. I also thought getting to where they needed to be took forever thanks to all the Thomas Wayne shit. I am also not a big fan of what is and is not real. I also don't see the case being made for mental illness as much as it's shitty parents. I had an hour argument with my friends about the movie who loved, so I know I'm in the minority.

My thoughts exactly. This movie shook me in a way few others have in recent memory. I've been singing this tune for a while now but Todd Phillips is one of the most talented filmmakers of the last 20 years. This was masterfully directed and acted.

I disagree. I thought they packed a great amount of story beats into 2 hours. Joker's relationships with his mother, co-worker, talk show idol, neighbor and therapist all had satisfying arcs. Plus the Thomas Wayne tie in, some cat and mouse with the detectives, and the social warfare going on in the city leading to the riots. The story was of good length and scope IMO.

This doesn't have to be a big heavy convo, but who else would you personally put in this elite category?

Not hating on Phillips either tbf, he's just not one of the first handful or so of directors I'd think of as such.

Cool. Just asking because I don't see him that highly esteemed, but appreciate the feedback.

Phillips has some undeniable duds in his filmography, most obviously the Hangover sequels, and therefore I wouldn't necessarily put his body of work up there with the best filmmakers, but I called him one of the most talented and I stick by that. The guy makes bangers. Road Trip, Old School and Hangover were 3 comedy classics to me. The latter 2 in particular were knock-your-socks-off aggressively funny, not unlike other big-time comedies of the century like Anchorman or Wedding Crashers. Adam McKay is probably Phillips' best comparison since he too went from making classic comedy movies to a couple more dramatic entries, although you would have to credit Ferrell as his partner on those comedies. Phillips' turn to drama with War Dogs and now Joker has been awesome to see. The man can do both genres brilliantly.

Guess I didn't think much of War Dogs, and I completely admittedly need to see Joker before making an up to date assessment of Phillips. Can't say I think a big ton of much of his other work, tbh. Hangover was dope and the comedies were nice and fun.

And I say the latter particularly compared to the immense amount of talent displayed by other directors in the last couple decades.

Cool to get another perspective though.

Good article/interview about why the concern of violence stemming from this flick is unwarranted:

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. It was kinda "ok". I never got the impression he was or is the Joker, more like a villain type of character we see on the news and then forget about a month later. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot at Fleck, he came off as super soft, whiny and just not likeable at all. This is definitely a stand alone film, nothing about this Joker is big enough, smart enough or charismatic enough to live in the Batman universe.

Just got done watching this and I really enjoyed it. Joaquin did a great portrayal of Fleck descending further and further into the madness when he just couldn’t catch a break until he finally snapped.

I was just listening to a podcast review of this (Not Another Movie Podcast) and they mentioned how people in their showings were laughing at random inappropriate times, and that was totally the case in my showing too. Some very weird audience laugher was happening and it’s kinda funny given that inappropriate laughter was a theme in the movie.

This movie hits on so many levels..

People often laugh when they're nervous or uncomfortable. It's fairly common. I genuinely laughed at the bit involving the sliding glass door, though.

It's not as if all laughter was inappropriate. There were funny moments but sometimes people were laughing at very fucked up times. I don't remember specific examples but when those guys said it on the podcast it rang true for my showing too.

So what are your guys takes on the numerous theories about this movie? In terms of what's

To answer the question who cares, it's a shitty troupe to hide bad writing. The midget locked down scene was the only real laugh out loud scene. The rest was a long boring trip to get to what we already know.

Is any of this real? I think it is designed to hide errors in the writing process. I didn't mind the one thing not being real, but to have everything in this movie be a toss up is dumb. Honestly, there is a lot of dumb in this movie, so I can see why they used that troup. I apologize if I spoiled anything, but we are in week three, so I don't think talking about this is a big deal now.

I disagree, but I can see your stance. I've been enjoying the discourse surrounding this movie and the many ways it can be interpreted. Certainly I wouldn't care for that in many movies but in a movie about a mental patient such as this or Shutter Island, or a movie about dreams like Inception, that sort of ambiguity is cool.

I agree. For this type of movie, the ambiguity is great.

Joker being an unreliable narrator is part of his character. With that said, I feel pretty confident that most of what we saw actually happened. The parts that were delusional or imaginary were made clear to the viewer.
