I was just browsing a dead wrestlers' website and noticed his birthday is tomorrow. Died on the 18th. Seems like 2010s has lost some of the more memorable ones.

It's funny. His run really wasn't that long but to this day pretty much everyone thinks of Mr. Perfect when you say Intercontinental Championship.

    Goddamn he was good.

Also The Rock stole his exaggerated corner kick stomps.

Of all the dead wrestlers, the four that really shook me were: Ravishing Rick Rude, Owen Hart, Macho Man Randy Sandwich, and the Ultimate Warrior.

It shook you when old man Warrior died?

God this thread is going to be depressing considering our average age.

All the guys we lost so young. Pain pills to destroy the heart, steroids to make it abnormally large. What could go wrong?

Umaga. We lost this guy way too soon. His character was so schlocky, but dangit he made it work. I really wish this guy was treated differently in his day because we were smack dab in the middle of Cena's reign of terror. They took Estrada away from Umaga... then they had Umaga speak for the first time to announce a friggin strap match... then loses to Cena.

Hey they thought so much of him that Cena actually had to take the ring apart and beat Umaga half to death with it to beat him.

    Goddamn he could move too.

And watch him sell the GTS perfectly.

    Umaga was great

I remember Viscera's wife suing the WWE for his death, and the WWE's response was like "It's not our fault he was fat"

Umaga was going to be my first post until I saw Viscera's birthday is today. The world's largest love machine.... Valentine's Day. Now it all makes sense.

This was my immediate thought when the thread got started. You're a little out of order ending it with the Cena thing, that loss was earlier on and then he got into other things, the last thing was the speaking in English for the first time when he was feuding with Punk, then he got let go. Word was around the time he passed that they were planning to bring him back, too.

Curt's early death was indeed tragic, and I loved him as a performer, but this is wrong. Honky Tonk Man is the greatest IC Champion of all time, and he is seriously underrated as a performer. When you consider that Vince tried to bring him in as a face as Hogan's buddy, when the crowds they were working in knew HTM as a heel, leading up to the "vote of confidence" where a heel Jesse Ventura called him a greaseball, and Honky's refusal to drop the strap to Macho Man, Honky absolutely defined the heel role. I actually think Jericho and arguably the Miz are both a step above Curt as IC champs.

My brother was a huge Texas Tornado mark when he took the IC title from Mr. Perfect. He belongs on the list of wrestlers who passed too soon as well.

Literally watched this match last night. Texas Tornado....I remember my older cousins tried to tell me he was the original Ultimate Warrior.....I mean he did used to be called the Modern Day Warrior so maybe that's what they were thinking of. That damn "Ultimate Warrior was 4 different people" rumor used to fuck with me lol.

Yeah I tried to explain that shit to my friends as kids but I swear every three months they'd tell me the new Warrior was dead.

I think they were on Warrior number 6 in their heads by 92.

I think my cousin Scott was the Warrior at one point.

And yeah, no foot, and I believe he had no foot when he was wrestling Flair and those guys for the World title. Crazy.

I actually remember my mom was into buying those National Enquirer "magazines" and they had one detailing his suicide. I honestly don't believe the WWE acknowledged his passing so when I saw that I was like holy shit what the fuck??

That was also the mag where they did a piece on Hulk Hogan right after Brooke was born and he was talking about retiring. I remember the article mentioned he was in this mid-late 30's at the time and I thought he was a lot older just cuz of the lack of hair and old school mustache.

In fairness to the multiple Warrior rumors, he did look vastly different throughout his WWE tenure, based probably on how little or how much steroids he was abusing. Also despite his hair basically always being a similar haircut, it seemed like his hair looked different every 6 months, I guess as a kid you don't expect men to frequently dye their hair.

Felt for Earthquake, dude had bladder cancer, and I think at one point it was in remission only to come back stronger. That was a sad time for sure.

Rick Rude was planning for a comeback if I recall correctly. Must have died right before Owen Hart. Bad year for wrestling.

Chyna was probably the worst because was following her on facebook and you felt the self destruction.

Roddy Piper kind of felt out of the blue because he seemed so healthy.

I think Mike Awesome could have been one of the greats too with a bit better treatment.

What's particularly tragic about this was I think he was set for a big push after the Goldust feud stealing Terri away from him.

Also Austin/Pillman, the gun angle was too much but they could have feuded again had Pillman stayed healthy.

Owen Hart is one that always hits me hard. What a talent

British Bulldog was another. His Summerslam 92 match at Wembley may be my favourite ever match. Yes I know Bret carried it but still.

And whoever said Honky Tonk and Miz were better IC champs than Perfect...have a word.

Perfect was Perfect. Great in the ring, on the mic and had the look. He would have been WWE champ if Hogan hadnt been such an ass

So, how do people feel about Benoit these days? I know several people who can’t go back and watch any of his work due to the circumstances of the end of his life. Anyone still like this?

me personally? I can watch Benoit matches still. I love watching him work. He was so smooth, so refined, and just so damn good. His northern lights suplex is one of absolute best ever. The crossface looked genuinely difficult to escape. His chops looked like the could tear flesh. I could go on and on about how many things Benoit just did *right*, it’s abaolutely insane.

heres the flip: I cringe when seeing him take head bumps. Suicide dives. Chair shots to the head. That beautiful diving headbutt. It’s all just hard to watch and makes it tough to separate the performer from the man & murderer.

    Thoughts?

Haven't really caught up to any of Beonit's WWE stuff on the network yet. Started from Smackdown's debut and watching every RAW, SD and PPV in that time. I forget what year they showed up but I'm sure I'll run into it sooner than not. I could watch his stuff. It's Robin Williams movies I have a hard time with these days though. Guy was so entertaining in just about every role.

Fortunately I'm not a guy that really rewatches anything so I've almost never had to deal with rewatching Benoit's matches. The only one I think I've seen after he died was the first MITB when the wife and I watched that Mania DVD. I remember it feeling a bit weird to watch him but fortunately there were enough other guys and things going on with the match that I wasn't too focused on it.
But yeah, he was definitely a tough one to deal with, he was my favorite wrestler. The news of him dying was upsetting enough and then, of course, it only got more upsetting as the rest of the story unfolded. Really one of the blackest marks on the business. On the plus side, I don't think that many people outside of wrestling fandom know about it because it's not like when I tell people I like wrestling they say, "It made that guy murder his family...".

Perfect was Perfect. Great in the ring, on the mic and had the look. He would have been WWE champ if Hogan hadnt been such an ass
    FACTS.

To me Mr Perfect was the best IC champ ever.

me personally? I can watch Benoit matches still. I love watching him work. He was so smooth, so refined, and just so damn good. His northern lights suplex is one of absolute best ever. The crossface looked genuinely difficult to escape. His chops looked like the could tear flesh. I could go on and on about how many things Benoit just did *right*, it’s abaolutely insane.

heres the flip: I cringe when seeing him take head bumps. Suicide dives. Chair shots to the head. That beautiful diving headbutt. It’s all just hard to watch and makes it tough to separate the performer from the man & murderer.

    Thoughts?
    Yeah, pretty much exactly this.

Piper hit hard, as he was one of my first favorites (orndorf, steamboat, and piper for me). All my friends loved Hogan in grade school, so I felt I locked down the Piper corner.

Warrior, timing wise, just felt really weird. One of the more surreal ones.
