Demaryius Thomas was removed from PUP and is now active after having torn his achilles on December 23rd with the Texans. Most people were expecting him to stay on PUP to start the season so this is a fast recovery. It'll be interesting to see if the 31 year old can make the roster (there's still a chance he'll be cut) and contribute. If so, the Patriots WR core is looking interesting with Gordon and Thomas in the mix with Edelman and the two rookies Harry and Meyers.

Crabtree to AZ could be good if anyone blocks for Kyler.

Also sorry for the double post but

Brian Flores trolling (“challenging”) his own player Kenny Stills by playing 8 straight Jay-Z songs in practice after Stills was outspoken against Jay’s social justice reform initiative seems very off to me. I’m a fan of Flores, I wish him well, but this seems like such a tone deaf move since it’s a heavy topic (relating to Kaepernick etc). He basically dissed his own player, sided against Kaepernick and the black lives matter movement and created a big distraction for his team (lots of media attention currently) that could carry over into the regular season. What a move.

I love Jay-Z btw and fully support his partnership with the NFL. Gotta help change things from within. And mainly I think the SB halftime show should be better with his input.

The SB halftime show would be better if it was just Jay-Z but that's me talking as a fan of his.

As for Flores, the whole thing reminded me of something I would do to my sister when we were growing up. "Oh, you want a ride to school but you hate this band I love? Get ready to listen to nothing but that for the next half hour." It was stupid and immature to do when I was 16 and is an even more stupid and immature thing to do for a 38 year old man who is supposed to be leading a team. Even if the media attention dies down it has probably caused a rift between the players and their coach and it will only fester if (when) the team struggles this season.

I couldn't care less if the halftime show were Weird Al Yankovic doing armpit farts for half an hour.

I’m not buying it but reports said it was planned anyway.

    Bananas.

Seems like a bright guy who likes competing and is clearly good enough to do so with the best but maybe doesn't absolutely love the game enough to endure all the b*llsh*t and injuries and the attention/scrutiny versus what other interests he may have.

My goodness if the Colts end up with Tua or Trevor Lawrence..

Out of nowhere. But the way these injuries seem to keep happening I can't blame him. I'd be pissed if I was a Colts fan, but I wouldn't boo him like the video I've seen.

As a Texans fan, yes. 2 easier games this year.

Nah, I’m not pissed. Disappointed, sure, because I enjoyed watching him play. But I’m not upset that the dude doesn’t want to play any longer if he’s not enjoying himself.

Actually more disappointed in whatever it is that went down with D'Onta Foreman. Honestly thought he had some legit potential.

Colts just cut Foreman. He didn’t have much of a shot of playing anyways unless Mack or Hines got hurt.

    Dearest mother —
The quill has never felt more heavy. I have made the decision to holster my sidearm permanently. I shall battle no more. The decision is difficult, but, as the hogs taught me, I must be true to myself. I am coming home to care for you and the farm.

Just an over-emotional knee-jerk response in the moment.

Still a shame for it to be Luck's final exit at home as a player.

Ultimately a real dick move for whoever in his circle spilled the beans to Schefter.

they won't fall off a cliff this year with Jacoby Brisset at qb. Instead of a super bowl contender they might win 7-9 games

Yes I think Kane is in charge of figuring out the contract situation. He is a politician now so I think he will handle this very diplomatically

Of course it's that, and it's not particularly unreasonable. If he'd retired in February then there wouldn't have been a problem but the timing is poor.

Because he basically tanked his own trade value. But they had to unload him because he'd already made himself a toxic element to their roster/locker room.

EXCLUSIVE: Carli Lloyd Has Received An Offer From An NFL Team To Kick In A Preseason Game

Gotta admit, if this is true I'm not a big fan of the idea. Naturally in the girlpower era of right now this makes me a misogynist pig scumbag and all that good stuff. But whatev.

Frankly I think she likely has the stuff to make the kicks. She's shown a little of that already. But she hasn't done it in pads, in a helmet, with a packed line of scrimmage raging in front of her, etc. But that's not even my biggest concern, at all. Let's just give benefit of the doubt that she could perform the task in a live game situation as that wouldn't come as a complete surprise either to be honest.

How many times have we seen kickers with their hands on the ball in the event a kick is blocked? Like, plenty. And so what happens then? This sounds like a ridiculous predicament for whoever ends up barreling toward her from the other team more than anything. Do you light her up? I mean, you have to right?

Nope, don't like this at all.

Agree. I think it's ridiculous honestly. It's all fun and games until a 300 pounder drops her and she breaks all her ribs

I think it would be cool but I agree with your concerns. I hadn't really thought of the blocked kick issue, but you're right she would be taking the risk of getting tackled or blocked. I suppose she would have to simply run away if there's a blocked kick and her team would need to accept that she would be useless in that case (and they could be fine with this if she's a good kicker).

First and foremost though, I question whether she would be an accurate enough kicker to even make a team. To your first point, yea I question her ability just based off how little experience she has. Most kickers have probably been doing it in game or practice situations since high school, for maybe 8+ years before reaching the NFL. And this is where I don't know her story well enough but I haven't heard that she ever kicked in a game before. If not, my concern would be the same as it is for a male soccer player who wants to try out. If you've never been on a football team before I doubt you will have the chops because it's more than just a leg that can kick hard. It's technique, accuracy, consistency, getting it over the lineman, etc. Male or female, if a soccer player wants this role I would consider it a long shot unless they already kicked in high school or college and had success.

you only need like 3 months of practice to be a kicker.

You could be right but if that's true, why haven't male soccer players done it? Maybe they have and I'm unaware. I would think that if it's that easy then we would have male soccer players, who's carers are maybe on the skids, trying to make the switch regularly.

Irrespective of the plumbing of your kicker, what team wants to play 10 v 11 in a loose ball situation? Particularly if the situation is perhaps one where said kicker is the closest person to said loose ball..

For the most part I agree with the concerns over how she'd perform in an actual game situation given her complete lack of training at the very specific particulars to that situation. Like I'd said I just wanted to give benefit of the doubt to carry on to what I think is a bigger concern, but ya, it's a whole other kettle of fish kicking in a live game situation versus working out a bit with none of the problematic conditions going on.

But I'd like to address my actual biggest concern once more just to be sure ... how do we account for this making sense for the dude(s) who may be tasked with knocking her shit sideways if the situation arises? How fair is it to them to be put in that situation? I know I would probably hesitate in that moment, and that in and of itself would go against the grain of everything I've been trained to do for years at an insane competitive level.

There was a few back in the day that transitioned from footballer (soccer) to kicker, but nobody notable recently. Harry Kane, England's current top striker, has said that he'd consider it after his football career, encouraged by Adam Vinatieri kicking field goals five years into his pension.

I'm not sure it would be unfair to them, I would more put it that it would be a potential disaster for the league if she got seriously injured/hospitalized. From a defensive player's perspective, they would be legally allowed to block/tackle her if the rules dictate it. That's why I'm saying she would need to run away because you can't legally block her from the back. The onus would be on her not to go after a loose ball or try to tackle anyone or block anyone. She and her team would need to be smart enough to do that and practice it so she knows what to do. It's not that dissimilar to how quarterbacks handle turnover situations. They don't want to get hit or hurt so they often bitch out and avoid contact.

And yea I agree with you that that this would all be a good reason not to employ a 140 pound woman as your kicker. This seems like it would all go nowhere for the reasons we've stated, so the curious part to me is.... are teams actually interested in her? Based on a video clip? Seems like it would be a fun publicity thing to have her kick during practice but I'm skeptical that they really would consider signing her.

Quarterbacks go for loose balls all the time. Like every single game. They are taught to get out of harm's way if/when it's unnecessary, such as diving for first downs in the second quarter or fighting for extra yards along the sideline, but if there's a fumble in the vicinity of a qb they're going to try and jump on the ball every single time. NFL coaches hold possession of the football in about as high esteem as anything else going on. Just forfeiting that is football anathema. As for not tackling, I kinda can't imagine a scenario where there's a kickoff and the return man breaks through and the kicker just trots off the field without a care in the world. That's crazy pills. She, nor anyone else on the planet, is that exceptional a kicker. Or we would have seen it already.

And I agree about the pr disaster it would be for the league to have her battered to fuck and stretchered off the field on live tv. But I also still think it's an unfair proposition to put on her opponents. It being 'legal' doesn't take away the moral conundrum involved. If for some insane reason the 145 lb male champion in mma were forced to fight the 145 female champion or vacate his title how fair would that be? And sure, that's obviously an extreme example, but I'm just bringing it up to highlight the kind of ridiculous decision that would be put on a 6 foot plus 200 pound plus highly trained gladiator to perhaps critically injure a woman for money. These dudes have wives and daughters. They're aware of the damage they can do. They're not all Greg Hardy.

true, true. I agree with everything you're saying so my responses are only playing devil's advocate and discussing for discussion's sake. she wouldn't handle kickoff duties. it's not uncommon for the punter to do that. and yea it's unfair for opponents to have to deal with a girl on the field but realistically it would be an advantage to them because they could just give her a light shove and she'd go flying, that is if she didn't get out of the way which she should anyway. youre right though, the biggest thing would be a botched snap/blocked kick where she has to either jump on the ball or potentially let the defense pick it up and run for a TD. that would be an UNFAIR position for both her, and the players who may have to dive in for the ball and crush her body.

unless you're cam newton in the 4th quarter of the super bowl down by 1 possession

bottom line for me, I'm not against them going down this path and seeing what she can do, I think it would be cool to have her come to practice and do that. but ultimately yes it's a very bad idea.

NFL preseason expected to be shortened; expanded playoffs more likely than 18-game season

Under the proposal, seven teams in each conference would qualify for the postseason instead of the current six. One team in each conference, rather than the current two, would receive an opening-round playoff bye. That would make for six first-round playoff games (three in each conference) instead of the current four, one of which might be played on a Monday night. The two additional playoff games probably would be enticing to networks in the NFL’s next set of negotiations for TV rights deals.
I love, love the nfl regular season/post-season structure just the way it is. Also hate the preseason as much as everyone else.

Would much prefer adding one playoff game in each conference over adding two regular season games.

And if that's the compromise to get the preseason shortened I don't think I'd end up hating it.

Under this proposal rather than get a bye the Pats would've played Pitts in the AFC and the Rams would've done so as well against Minnesota. Meanwhile we would've only had to suffer through 2 or 3 preseason games and the regular season would've stayed perfect just the way it is. I think I could dig that

Fuck that. The playoffs are perfect the way they are.

I mean okay adding a 3rd wild card team isn't going to ruin everything but the current system is perfectly balanced, with 2 teams in each conference getting the bye. With only 1 team getting a bye, their path to the SB theoretically gets easier because they will 100% of the time be playing a team with less rest in the AFC title game. Last year, for instance, would NE/KC and NO/LAR have been such great matchups if the visiting team didn't have the bye in the wild card round? It's impossible to say, but I love how those matchups were two teams with equal "rest" having each had a bye 2 weeks prior.

I would far rather them just keep everything as-is including the preseason.

I'd rather the 4 pre-season games than a new playoff format or more regular season games.

If they want, give us 2 or 3 pre season games and then add a televised and joint live practice and charge fans to attend.

I like that proposal. Would make that #1 seed race likely running through week 17 too, whereas in the past teams guaranteed #2 would rest starters. And also opens up an extra space, meaning most teams going into the last fixture 7-8 or above will fancy their chances of qualifying.

Basically, it ensures more competitive football through the 17 week season, while effectively only initially disgruntling second placed teams in each conference. I'm in.

Not necessarily. In a situation where the #1 seed is set in stone by week 17, but the #2 seed is still up for grabs, well now that becomes something teams no longer care about. So in that scenario it would be less competitive.

Locking up second seed would still guarantee home advantage through the divisional playoffs, and would avoid top seed until the conference championship game. And would still play the worst team left in the playoffs. No way of scheduling in sports can guarantee climatic endings, but it'd theoretically open up more final day games to have something on the line. It's all theoretics anyway, as the current system is fine. I'm not keen on the basketball system of more than half the league making the playoffs.

I agree the current system is absolutely perfect. Except for the sorry uselessness of the length of the preseason, which is what this is really all about.

    Trade terms, per sources ...

    Seahawks get: DE Jadeveon Clowney

Texans get: 2020 third-round pick, DE/OLB Barkevious Mingo, LB Jacob Martin

    why isnt clowney worth more??

The whole situation was handled very poorly, especially given he was about to sign the tender and play before he heard about trade rumors

Meanwhile we still have a turnstile for a LT that will likely get our franchise qb killed while we waste more time on his rookie deal.

But at the least the HC doesn't have to worry about the GM getting mad at him.

Texans are finalizing a trade for OT Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills

There ya go. I wonder what the cost will be

    Edit:

Teams still finalizing trade terms now but Laremy Tunsil is going to the Texans for a package that includes two first-round picks and one second-round pick to Miami, per source. Deal involves more but those are the headlines.

Feels like TankForTua is very real in Miami

I mean...the Dolphins line isn't well known for protecting it's QB, so getting someone from us I'm not sure really shores things up.

Tunsil did a fine job in pass protection last season and he's trending up in that way, and that's obviously the problem we need to solve. So good, glad to have him.

And I like Kenny Stills, particularly with his skill set as an insurance for when (not if) Will Fuller goes down. And if we get lucky healthwise then he's just an additional weapon.

    But that price though.

As a fan of a team that ain't won shit this is gonna sound kinda ridiculous, but this cost as far as I'm concerned translates into super bowl or bust.

Interestingly it's true. Dolphins will start all but 2 games at the 1 PM EST slot. There's a 4 PM slot against the Colts. And for some god only knows reason the Dolphins have a Monday night game against the Steelers.

Every team is guaranteed at least 1 prime time or thanksgiving game a year I believe.

Zeke signed. 1 more day until kickoff. I'm ready.

I like the Bears tomorrow night. Rodgers with a new coach, didn't get any preseason snaps, I could see the offense working out some kinks. Take the Bears in the 1st half if you're the gambling type. Maybe Rodgers will still pull off a comeback in the 2nd.

BTW it's sad that we have healthy discussion in the Cash Fantasy League WhatsApp chat but the thread is dead

I've set up an Eliminator league on ESPN. Last time we did it I lost week one (stupid Patriots losing at home to the Chiefs) so hopefully I do better this time.

Search on ESPN for Rajah Eliminator League

A bit of homerism, but I'm guessing the Pats will go 19-0, and Pats Nation will be saying "Gronk who?"

Wentz paid LARGE two years before his deal is up..

Goff now paid LARGE two years before his deal is up..

Very much hoping the Texans take care of Deshaun Watson heading into 2020 before the Chiefs do so with Mahomes, cause good grief whatever that number is going to be..

..I don't care how talented he is.

The entire city of Pittsburgh must be in stitches watching all of this play out.

Some general predictions for my team.

Everyone is lauding the defense and yea they should be great. The CB unit is elite and the safeties and linebackers are also very solid. Kyle Van Noy has become that new Ninkovich/Vrabel type guy who seems to always be in the right place and when you pair him with Hightower and the returning Jamie Collins it's a strong group. In the pass rush we're relying heavily on Michael Bennett to stay spry and on the field. If he misses games I could see the DL becoming a problem area but overall the defense looks as good as it has since 2014 and I'm very bullish on them in fantasy/reality in the first half of the year before their schedule gets tougher. Through 7 games I wouldn't be surprised to see them leading the league in points allowed, and finishing the season in the top 3.

On offense, despite the return of Josh Gordon, the running backs should be the major focus (and that's perfect when you have a 42 year old QB). Michel hopefully can catch more passes this year and become better rounded (the RBs coach said he expects him to do so). If so, he could ascend to the elite RB tier this year although the Pats are unlikely to make him a true bell cow. The loss of starting center David Andrews to blood clots hurts, but shouldn't be too detrimental.

The pass game should be sufficient. While it's nice to imagine Gordon returning to his prime form, staying active and going off for 1250 yards and 11 TDs (which is possible), I see this passing game as being pretty fragile. If Edelman or Gordon misses games, it quickly becomes a pretty weak squad of receivers. Sure undrafted rookie Jacobi Meyers has been impressive in the preseason but I don't expect him to have more than 500 yards and you don't want to rely on him. Run to set up the pass, not vice versa. Brady will probably end up with similar stats to last year.... 28 TDs, etc.

    12-4 seems about right.

If they beat Pittsburgh on Sunday, watch out because their next 6 games are cupcakes (and I don't expect Cleveland to come to Foxboro and win in week 8 either). I could see an 8-0 start before they hit the harder part of the schedule.
