Crazy come back down 18 in the 4th to tie it.

A tie sucks, but one considering where they were after three... should be reassuring

Tomlin should have been fired after the Jags playoff lost. Ben looks old. The WRs without Brown are just average or below. The defense can't stop a cold. Fire Everyone.

Antonio Brown's cap hit for 2019 is expected to be a mere $6 million for the Patriots. There will be some dead cap ($4.5 million or so) next season if he leaves in free agency.

    Pretty good deal.

A neat stat. Heading into tonight's Saints game, Brady and Brees both have exactly:

-520 regular season passing touchdowns (19 shy of the record).
-A career regular season passer rating of 97.7.

Neat stat, Fro, but we all know that post-season stats matter as well. TB12 has a lot more touchdowns than Who Dat Drew.

I thought I heard on the radio that AB has a decent argument that the Raiders may not have been legally allowed to cancel the $30 M in guarantees in his contract, under the terms of the CBA. So if AB prevails, the Raiders may be stuck with a cap hit for anything above what the Pats are paying him (less the allowed fines).

Trying to figure out who at the Raiders looks more foolish - the GM or the head coach.

If you had to bet your house on AB still being a Patriot at the end of the season. Which way do you bet?

I'd have to go with no.

For the combined reason of him being a Grade A+ Douche Canoo as well as the simple fact that the Pats don't need him to win another Super Bowl.

    Be careful Tom.

His cell phone is in his pocket and it's probably on record.

Seriously though, this is the greatest test of the "patriot way" to date. I will give them all the credit in the world if they can make it work.

I would probably bet yes he'll be here at year end but would agree it's about a 50/50 chance. It's hard to imagine him towing the line in Foxboro given his recent history. They will deal with guys with off the field issues but locker room or meeting or practice disruptions don't seem to fly there. On the other hand, it would seem that he legitimately wants to win and chose the Patriots over other teams (Seahawks at the very least, likely others). I could easily see him falling in line for 1 year, 1 shot at a title, then leaving to be a menace to a new franchise next year.

He'll be there by the end.

Wouldn't be shocked at all if he acted up until he got onto a team that could get him a ring

I'd say the Steelers are a team that could have gotten him a ring. They've been in the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years, and had a shot at the playoffs last year when he acted up in week 17 and missed the game. no one is a contender to the extent the Patriots are, but he was on a contender for his whole career.

After leaving a team that you played in a super bowl and a conference champ game with, and was a sb title a couple of seasons removed from when you joined them..

    Makes sense..

How many Superbowl wins do they have since he's been in the league?

How many does New England have?

The late additions (Stills, Tunsil, Duke, Hyde) were nice tonight.
    Missed JDC.
Same old, same old with clock management.
Same with some of the playcalling.
RAC continues to make you headscratch at the worst times.
    Thank fuck for DHop.
The future looks bright with Deshaun.

Bummed, but lots to build off of and on to next week.

I can see why the texans defense on that play to set up the FG would be criticized. 6 seconds left but the Saints had a timeout. do they go for the hail mary or the short gain? hard to defend against both. I guess given how close they were to FG range, the texans could have been more aggressive defending the short pass.

Watson got battered all game (6 sacks) and Tunsil gave up two of them. One on the second to last drive he got absolutely destroyed. Not the kind of performance you want after trading two firsts.

Playing prevent up 2 was horrendous. It was woeful defense. Poor Watson. Dragged them to a lead with an incredible performance despite a sieve of an O line only to be badly let down by the other side of the ball.

Brees hasn't exactly been the poster-qb for hail mary-esque bombs. And they have a kicker that was already discussed with a big leg crushing warmups. Playing the odds is all.

And this isn't the first time for RAC.

He didn't have a bad game on the whole. First game a few days literally in with a new organization. Lot to be said for how they gel moving forward. I hate how much we paid for him, but it was a dire need and I'm nowhere near buyers remorse.

Makes no sense to leave the gap the corners did on that final play just play press with a safety over the top. You don't consciously defend a hail mary up 2 when a short pass gets then in FG. Baffling.

I'm obviously too dumb to have ever even looked it up and just was going with what I've always seen flooding through Texans message boards and the like.

Receiving yards after catch. (RAC) Romeo Crennel's defenses specialty is my guess...

Impressive from the Raiders there. Good game to watch.

Wish I hadn't missed the Texans Saints game though.

Please tell me someone saw the horrific Hyundai halftime rap show by G-Eazy during the saints game? My eyes are still bleeding.

They obviously wouldn't go for the hail mary considering Brees couldn't throw it over 20 yards and it's much harder to get the hail mary completion over a 10 yard one with a time out left. It was a silly decision and Booger noted it before the ball was snapped.

Saints-Texans was a heckuva game to watch - so much better than the other prime-time games in week 1.

Alvin Kamara is a special player. Brees is a tough competitor with nerves of steel. With six seconds left, it was clear to everyone in the stadium that they had to try a short pass as the clock would run out on anything longer.

The NO defense played great on a couple of the second half drives, with sacks that took the Texans out of field goal range.

Texans have a lot to work on, but they showed they are for real. I hope Watson stays healthy as he's fun watch.

Just looking at the highlights of the Raiders/Broncos. I would not have predicted that outcome - the Bronco's D is supposed to be ferocious, but they couldn't touch Carr at all. Huge improvement for the Raider offensive line. Trent Brown is a beast.

As for Antonio Brown and the Pats, I'm cautiously optimistic that he will toe the line and fit in, and he seems motivated. Given his history, the fear that he gets whiny if he's not getting the ball is legit, but the Pats have shown their ability to get the most out of everybody by using what they do best. Brady is as good as reading defenses as any coach, and he spreads the ball all around based on what the defenses are giving him. What I worry about is when the Pats get to 6-0, and AB gets 10 catches, 120 yards, and 3 TDs in the first 3 weeks, but then only 2 or 3 catches the next 2 weeks if they choose to run with Burkhead, White, and Michel to win, will AB return to his selfish form? Especially when he will be asked about how it feels to win even though he doesn't get the ball?

ugh. I wish we hadn't signed this fuckhead. the texts seem to prove that he jacked off on her back but the full on rape is seemingly a he-said she-said consensual-or-not situation. I read the whole lawsuit and it seems pretty convincing - like she says she took a polygraph - but idk. my initial reaction is that AB is a piece of shit and I want him gone. I believe the girl more than him. but it could be a farce.

either way, I never wanted him before he signed, and while I was happy to get him at a bargain this now makes the whole thing a big mistake.

I guess we'll see how it plays out. does the commissioner put him on the exempt list? do the pats cut him right away?

Both look foolish, but the GM gave away a 3rd and a 5th round pick for completely nothing. Gruden looked like he was trying to play good cop.

AB looks more foolish than anyone.

I don't know if this was rape but I wouldn't blame the Pats for keeping him off the practise field, or even cutting him. It's not like he went to a massage parlor.

neither of em look foolish, ffs. knowing the outcome doesnt make the decision to get arguably the best wideout in the game for a 3rd and 5th suddenly laughable.

It was much dumber when the Raiders gave the Steelers a 3rd round pick for Martavious Bryant last year (who they later cut).

In terms of AB, I guess you can say neither of them look foolish but the body of work for Gruden with the team isn't exactly a pretty picture. Mayock can basically be seen as a puppet because this is his first time with the gig and it's pretty clear he's going to lose on most potential power struggle issues because Gruden is the face of that franchise for the foreseeable future.

In regards to AB, sure, the value was great but it was great because he was damaged goods. Knowing that and the perceived culture of the franchise, that's not an ideal mix.

Sam Darnold out with mono, possibly for multiple weeks. And just like that,I'd say the Jets moderately promising season is over.

My thought here is that they are likely looking at an 0-6 start, maybe even 0-7. Their schedule:

    Comeback loss to Bills
Browns (with no Darnold and possibly no Bell)
    at Patriots
    Bye
    At Eagles
    Cowboys
    Patriots
    at Jags

These have been floating around for a few days. I don't know that they prove anything but the two would appear to be romantically involved as opposed to the accuser's statement in her suit which said they never dated and only had a "brother-sister" relationship. It looks like they dated when they're sitting on each other's laps and whatnot.

Maybe it's more of a brother-stepsister relationship, that belongs on one of those websites.

I wonder what kind of locker-room talk it has spurred.

    Got a bit worried.

    Bears somehow pull it off.

Running game was nice, but Mitch really needs to figure out the passing game, missed some passes pretty badly today.

Big Ben is done for the year with an elbow issue needing surgery. Drew Brees needs thumb surgery and will be out about 6 weeks. Shitty news.

Do we think Big Ben's career is over? I think yes. He would be coming back next season at age 38.

How many of you have a local fanbase perpetual draft shouldacoulda argument?

So here in Houston there's a never ending debate between Deshaun Watson and Pat Mahomes. There are fans here who thought we should've traded up in 2017 to land Mahomes before the Chiefs did. Many several fans are perfectly content though with Watson despite Mahomes' success. I fall into both categories, but most fans are thoroughly divided between the two. And naturally because of Patty's incredible display thus far the back and forth is kinda always turnted up and making every argument under the sun at least partially as to why Watson is actually better he's just gotten much less fair a shake. It's silly, but it's football, and so ya.

I know Bears fans know what I mean. Be happy to hear y'alls pov.

    Anyone else?

Mahomes did have a better overall situation that he was drafted into initially which could've helped in his development

I think it's as simple as what you said.

Mahomeboy got drafted to a better situation.

Now that isn't to say he's not incredible. He's really something and nearly any team would probably be lucky to have him. But still.

Also my Titans have to keep playing against Watson twice a year so I'm not about to stop respecting him or how he can simply dismantle a defense when he has protection and some weapons.

I don't agree that it's just that simple. As good as Watson's shown thus far there's also a talent gap to consider as well.

And I've kinda gotten my fill of having that debate elsewhere.

Was really more interested in fans of other teams that may have similar kinds of squabbles among your own.

I can't say we have those arguments in the Patriots fanbase, at least not that I've seen. But I suppose we're a team without the need for shouldacoulda arguments since we've been so successful and those debates would mainly be centered around quarterback picks.

With Bears fans, I'm not sure they know what you mean (unless you're talking about something besides Trubisky). For the Bears there's no debate. They picked the wrong guy. It's just regret and "what could have been" but I doubt there's a debate about it.

I suppose your situation is unique since you're debating between two great young QBs.

Deshaun I think has more of a rushing ability, the arm talent is certainly there.

Mahomes improvisation skills may be second to none and his arm talent has shown throughout, I do think that Watson can get to that level, he kinda was until he got hurt.

    Anyone else?
there was a bit of that after the 2012 draft when we took vinny curry in the second round and then seeing how russell wilson developed and thinking we should have reached for him. that talk probably peaked in 2014 and 2015 when chip kelly fucked our team up and eventually traded away the QB we drafted 13 spots after wilson went. but a year later we went drafted wentz and any of that talk went away. then a year and a half after that nobody will really regret not scooping up wilson ever again.

I know Perc said he's gotten his fill of that debate, but to me it isn't much of a debate there either.

Mahomes is a hall of famer who will win multiple MVPs, probably a Super Bowl or two, and I don't think it's just because he has good skill players and Andy Reid. This year he lost Hill and Hunt and still lit it up yesterday by hitting new receivers for massive yards. I believe Mahomes will be good for a long time. He has had the greatest start to a career by a QB ever, in my uneducated opinion.

Watson is a pro bowl quarterback, also a very good draft pick, but a good step below Mahomes. And he will be more prone to injury due to his play style, thus less dependable and likely a shorter career. And I put everyone a step below Mahomes, even other young studs like Wentz and Goff. Mahomes is next level.

So of course you would trade for Mahomes instead if you could. The difference between what the Chiefs gave up for Mahomes and the Texans gave up for Watson is marginal.

I've grown tired of the debate in part because that's almost to a t my take on it.

Now try taking that side with Texans homers, continuously.

i guess there have also probably been debates within the fanbase about whether we'd be better off with goff over wentz, especially given wentz' injuries, foles magic touch and goff taking the rams to the super bowl this past season. not that we necessarily had a choice in the matter, but i suppose in a land of hypotheticals it's had to come up. but even then, wentz' toughness fits this city so well that i doubt most fans really ever entertain the thought.

The next time someone says they wouldn't trade Watson for Mahomes, give them a cup to piss in. I want whatever they are smoking.

And I say this as a huge Watson fan.

    To be fair

I haven't seen nearly enough of Mahomes to fairly judge him. I just mostly know his stats. And it seems like Alex Smith was doing phenomenal with the same basic group of guys.

But dudes I'm stuck with Marcus "is he good or isn't he?" Mariota.

I suppose I can say that I still feel like he was the better bet between him or Winston.

Stafford has been a mixed bag in Detroit. The guy has gotten us to the playoffs and is certainly better than anything we've had in the past (AHEM Scott Mitchell). But he has also been accused by local fans of looking pretty on paper but winning absolutely no meaningful games. I've given up on having anything meaningful with this franchise until the Ford family finally sells it. Stafford can play there or not. It doesn't matter with the most inept ownership of a franchise in ANY North American sport. No one else comes close.

The Pittsburgh Pirates say hi. Honestly, this season is going to be rough. We have had Foles, Ben and Brees already go down. The NFC is wide open while the AFC is the Pats to lose. I like KC but they are not getting home field and even if they did, the refs would fuck them again. On top of the telegraphed ending of lol Pat's win, we have to deal with this fucking awful pass interference replay, because the NFL refuses to admit/ fire their shitty part time refs.

why can't the chiefs get homefield? The Pats aren't going 16-0, at least I don't think. They play the Eagles, Cowboys, Ravens, Chiefs, and Texans this year still. I am assuming that Chiefs/Pats game will determine home field. 13-3 probably gets it done with the head to head being the tiebreaker

It's funny because the media always does the Prescott/Wentz debate even though they were drafted so far apart. You don't hear too much of the Goff vs Wentz stuff on first take/undisputed etc.

Homefield in the AFC is very important this year (given that there are two juggernaut teams probably destined for an AFC title game rematch) and yea it could clearly go either way. I think the Pats have the easier schedule and my prediction they will come away with the 1 seed, but O-line health is the biggest red flag for them now. Thankfully the timing is favorable - they're in the cupcake portion of their schedule now while they might be missing their starting center (out of the year), and both starting tackles (Cannon should be coming back soon with a shoulder injury, Wynn just got diagnosed with turf toe and is expected to miss a few weeks, hopefully not more). Losing 3 of your O-linemen is tough for any team. But with any luck Cannon and Wynn will be back by the time we get into the meat of our schedule.

I wouldn't want to trade Watons for Mahomes, honestly. And I've already stated my thoughts between the two.

However much I may think of Mahomes, and absolutely wanted us to move to get him in 2017, Deshaun is already entrenched as our guy. He and this fanbase have already embraced each other while he's shown he's got the goods to win it all. That's enough for me to want to run it out with him regardless of anyone else's talent. It's just on this organization now to pull their heads out and help him.

The Pats are going to go 16-0, then on to win another SuperBowl to complete the undefeated season. Their defense won't give up more than 2 touchdowns, nor 20 points, in any game this season.

Brady is skilled enough to handle playing behind a decimated O-line, because he can read defenses as good as anyone ever, and he immediately will be able to figure out who will be open in the .5 seconds he needs to beat them. While the final score was so lopsided, I have no doubt that Belichek still found a LOT of things they did wrong the past couple weeks, and they will fix them. The scary part for the rest of the league is that the Pats ALWAYS get better as the season goes along.

How much better is their defense than last year when they gave up like 100 points to the Chiefs and 100 to the Eagles the year before that? A lot of their personnel is the same on that side of the ball.

The 16-0 talk is premature, obviously, and I think the chances are slim. But if they did get to 14-0 and sealed up the 1 seed, I would wager they will go for it (as they did in 2007).

Exactly my point. They have mostly the the same defense that stopped the vaunted Rams in the Superbowl. The Rams, who held the second best offense in the league (points scored and yards earned) failed to score a touchdown against the Pats defense. In the last 3 games that counted, the Pats have given up 6 points. Their defense has scored more points than it has allowed.

The Patriots lost Trey Flowers, Malcolm Brown, and Adrian Clayborn from last year's defense, and that hurts their pass rush. But they brought back Jamie Collins, so their linebackers including Kyle Van Noy and Dont'a Hightower can cause havoc. Combined with the league best corner in Stephon Gilmore, and a top-5 safety in McCourty, their coverage will make it hard to find an open receiver.

Sure, they looked wonderful against the less-than-they-used-to-be Steelers and tanking Dolphins. Their schedule doesn't look scary until they get to weeks 8 to 14, when they face the Browns, Ravens, Eagles, Texans and Chiefs. But I am clearly optimistic that they will fix their holes, and get better together, before then.

The Chiefs might be tough to stop, but they also have to find a way to stop Brady, and all his weapons. It doesn't matter how many yards they get if they get outscored.

Considering the high profile injuries already throughout the league, calling a perfect season this early is mighty optimistic. They obviously have the benefit of playing the Jets and the Dolphins, but the Bills won't roll over this year and that week 8-14 schedule is brutal. That's presuming they have a healthy squad all season. If the secondary is weakened to injury, you don't see, in particular, Mahomes, Baker and Wentz airing it out and putting up decent scores? You can't see the back up QB getting beat up by the Ravens or Texans if Brady gets hurt?
