main sticking points are it's made by respawn entertainment, the studio behind the titanfall series. it's free to play and was surprise released yesterday afternoon. it takes the concept of hero shooters like overwatch or the specialists in the black ops multiplayer and weaves it into the battle royale genre. instead of being a generic solider or character you pick a unique 'legend' that has a set of abilities; one passive, one technical and an ultimate. for example, one character has a passive ability that gives you a gun shield that blocks incoming gunfire when you aim down sights, a tactical ability that lets you throw down a big dome shield that blocks incoming gunfire for 15 seconds and then an ultimate that calls in a mortar strike on a marked position. every character has their strengths and weaknesses and counters.
there is a respawn mechanic where if you cant pick up a downed teammate within a certain amount of time you still have the ability to go collect their banner and take it to one of a handful of beacons on the map and immediately redrop them into the game. the beacons are a one time use only mechanic for the entire map so if an opponent squad uses one then you wont be able to.
60 person limit, only squads of 3 people, no solos or duos yet.
they're doing seasons that last three months and each season has a battle pass with over 100 items to earn, all cosmetic, like skins for the legends and guns as well as victory poses and banners. they have heavily stressed that there is no pay to win system, any real world money spent simply gets you cosmetic items quicker, as almost all of the items can also be earned by playing the game and acquiring the in-game currency and loot boxes from levelling up.
from the first day of being live it seems to be a really well optimized and balanced game with enough tweaks to make it different from the other big 3. it's getting buzz cause this is a triple a studio putting out a battle royale, which not many others have done, plus the fact the turnaround from being a rumor to the game dropping was less than a week, it seemed.
i have yet to play it though me and matthew are trying to find the time to hop on. the titanfall games are some of the best FPS of this generation. before black ops 4, the first titanfall was the last multiplayer shooter I put an insane amount of time into.
I presume you're playing on PS4? I might download it then, was quite the pitch you gave for it.

@Alf is trying to get me into this. I've downloaded it but got confused halfway through the tutorial. I can't be doing with too many elements to shoot em ups. I'm 36 ffs.

Gave it a whirl last night. Could be quite a bit of fun. The first group I was in landed close to two other squads. We fought over the supplies there, and I died an unarmed medic. The second map, I took the soldier. The group I had there wanted to go slow and methodical. We lasted to the last ten, and died getting into the round 5 ring.
Being from respawn, this feels very close to the MW2 controls. Everything is precise, and crisp. The weapons are varied and fun to shoot. I need to get a new head set, and maybe a regular crew to start playing a bit more.
Play it like MW2. Go pick up weapons, when you squad-mate is down go press and hold square to revive them. Be careful, you can die. Easy peasy

Never played any Call of Duty. Honestly speaking the last time I was excellent at a shoot em up was probably the early Halos.
I'm not the biggest shooter fan. There's a few shooters that I've enjoyed, and only two that I have a Nostalgia for. Halo 2, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 are it. I have put as much hours into those as some of my RPGs and wrestling games. I definitely recommend you getting into a crew with Alf and select the third mate, and give it a whirl. Maybe focus on the medic until you get your feet under you and then go to something a little more damage heavy

Man does this game really hinge on what group you get. Getting shoved into some campers one map, run and Gunners the next, and then tactical snipers finally gave some weird matchups. As soon as I was getting the feel for one group we would die and I would get the next. Got a couple kills learn some characters oh, but I haven't used any of their ultimate abilities just yet. Oh no the game control egg like Modern Warfare 2 is a big Plus for me. I see myself playing this for a little bit at the very least.

Won my first match last night. Not a single kill. Did quite a bit of damage, but our wraith character would warp over and finish what I started almost every time. At first I was a bit annoyed by it, but then we got into a rhythm and it fucking worked. Bloodhound would ping enemies, I'd stsrt shooting with a lmg or peacemaker, and wraith would finish.
I'm not as good as Matthew. I didn't "carry". ��

Man, 7 years since playing a twitch shooter has taken its toll. My aim and reactions in gun fights are just bad. I focus on trying to be a really good teammate. I've been trying to play a harder character to make myself get better, but it might just be hampering me worse.
I'm still crazy about this game. Got the new headset in today and won the first match with it. Not by my hands, but I did have 3 kills. It's Apex and I helped.
