    XFL

I thought there was a thread but couldn't find it. If anyone finds it link it and we can ask the mods to merge threads.

Anyway looks like cities to be announced next week for the new XFL.

Reports in St. Louis coming out yesterday and today is that St. Louis is landing one of the teams.

Should be interesting to say the least. They are going to play in the dome where the Rams used to play.

Glad to see St. Louis getting one back. Been by the Dome a few times and seemed pretty nice to not be used for its intended purpose.

Its actually being used more now I think since the Rams left. They were able to bring more events in since not having to work around the Rams schedule.

So the word is that they'll play in the dome for the first season, but st Louis did just vote yes on building a soccer stadium for a MLS team.

Decent chance the St Louis Xfl team plays there if all things work out.

Apparently there is a big announcement coming from the XFL Wednesday the 5th.

I'll be so fucking pumped if this all works out. It's also encouraging that Vince has had beef with Kroenke (the rams owner)

I wouldn't worry too much about where the St. Louis XFL team will play after the first couple of years.

I doubt they play at the new soccer stadium. I don't think they plan on building a football/soccer stadium like other cities. When they city was trying to keep the Rams there were plans for a new stadium that would have been able to be used by a MLS team and NFL team but this is a different group focused on an MLS team for St. Louis.

I hate Kroenke and honestly the NFL. I would be more apt to go to an XFL game at this point. I don't at the Rams. Not their fault their owner is a douchebag.

Yeah but a duel stadium for MLS and XFL is much different than MLS and NFL.

Meh I think there is a market for pro football that isn't the NFL, especially one in the off season of the NFL.

But hey I'm not gonna convince you to like anything, that's not your thing.

Very true but I doubt the people building the stadium have any thoughts about making it a dual stadium of any kind.

The point is that an XFL team can easily use a MLS stadium. They seat usually around 20k which is perfect for XFL. NFL not so much. Field sizes are essentially the same. There is really no reason you would have to do anything different than what you are currently planning.

I think there is a market for this but more than anything I get at least one season of pro football back in my area.

I don't understand the immediate need to shit on the XFL and the logic to just shout "it's not gonna work!"

They're playing in the NFL off season. People are pissy with the NFL and people still enjoy football. What are these insurmountable hurdles you think the XFL will stumble over?

If the games are like the video game Arch Rivals punching people and stuff I'll probably watch a couple games.

I had such high hopes when they first announced it back in the day. I thought we were really gonna get to see powerbombs and dropkicks on the field. That would have got ratings.

One major hurdle is that it will most likely be a garbage product. Where is the talent going to come from? The NFL will obviously get first crack. The Alliance of American Football is starting a year before the XFL, so they will get first crack at the NFL rejects. So you are basically going to be dealing with the leftovers from the Alliance of American Football. That is a major hurdle among many others.

Well, the biggest "hurdle" or as I call "negative" is the intent on being direct competition. Vince McMahon himself said, we're going to give football back to the fans. Vince's mentality is never "Eh, we'll just cater to that tiny niche who will watch ANY kind of football". That's Paul Heyman. Vince isn't putting 500 million into this just to be 2nd best. Delusional.

    Then you have the talent.

Then you have the fact that the people who are "pissy" with the NFL...they're few and far between and are still tuning in every week despite what they claim on social media. Again, I RESPECT the optimism and if you're someone who will give this a chance, there's nothing negative coming from me on a personal level. I'm just being realistic. Outside of a puncher's chance, the XFL is going to have to accept taking a distance 5th in the world of football or kill the WWE while trying to stay afloat. Where do you think that money is really going to come from if it doesn't explode?

Get ready for WM 38 to be headlined by Stevie Richards v. Adam Rose.

I feel like Vince is hoping the discontent over lack of big hits/overall defense/political correctness arguments in the NFL will be the key selling point to his league.

Bottom line, I think it was a mistake the first time around back when his actual company (WWE) had more viewership around it during the Attitude Era. I definitely think its a mistake to do it again when his company lacks the viewership it had back then, even with the opportunity to bring over fans.

Kinda strange that it's basically all coastal teams, besides St Louis. I figured there would be at least one team in the Great Lakes region (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc). Even a team in the deep south would be interesting.

The fact that every city chosen already has an NFL team, besides St Louis, is kinda an odd choice too.

I think Orlando would have been a better place. Really is too bad that the Midwest isn't really represented other than St Louis

I'll probably be looking into season tickets for the St Louis team. I'd guess they won't be super expensive and worst case I know some buddies would be willing to split them.

Part of that is purely to do my part to show that this is a good football market and to tell Stan Kroenke fuck off.

The Sports Business Journal is reporting that negotiating is going on between the XFL and FOX, and the XFL and ABC (via ESPN) for broadcasting rights.

AAF will have its opening game and title game on CBS, and then once a week they’ll get a game on CBS Sports Network. I imagine this will be similar. Fox will show a couple but FS1 will get the bulk. Or ESPN2 or whatever.

FS1 certainly wouldn't be bad, considering it is almost on basic cable packages for most people.

Good hire to bring Bob Stoops to the dallas franchise. Should be fun.

Commissioner Oliver Luck said that touchdowns in the new league will result in the scoring team deciding whether to go for one point, two points, or three points.

The one-point conversion would come not from a kick but from a scrimmage play at the two. Two points would be scored after a successful conversion from the five. And three points would be scored for a successful conversion from the 10.

Luck said that the league considered moving the three-point conversion to the 15, but that the coaches believed defenses would more easily defend the end zone with that much territory to cover.

    Kinda cool.

Thinking it through in my head I think that most of the plays we ran as 2 point plays as a coach would probably also work from the 5. But it does take away a lot of the quick pick plays and runs up the middle.

Interesting change. I wonder how teams will approach it.

Yea, the strategy will be interesting. Moving back 3 yards to the 5 probably won't cut your conversion percentage in half, so I could see some teams always going for 2. Then again we can't think of this like NFL conversion rates since the quality of play will be worse, so teams might be best off just trying to power it in with a running back rather than trying a pass play from the 5. The 3 point play I imagine would only be used in late-game scenarios as needed.

Yeah we always had a play in our back pocket that even though we ran it every game it was very hard to defend and keep us from getting 3 yards. We ran it a lot on 2 point plays but also we would pull it out on a must convert 3rd and 3. We had other plays off of that look as well so we could give you a few different things. I cant think of anything like that working at the same rate from the 10.

    Also:

The XFL's overtime rules are currently being tested in the Spring League. Luck said each team will have five opportunities to convert a two-point conversion in the overtime session. The defense would score one point with a turnover. Forty-four players will be on the field at the same time in the overtime session, with both team's offenses and defenses on opposite ends of the field.

I'm not in love with this OT format (I prefer a style that stays more similar to normal football rules.... even in college there are still first downs, field goals, etc). But it sounds fine, and having both teams on each side of the field in order to speed it up is cool. In my head I imagine this working such that once the play is complete on one side of the field, the play clock would start on the other side of the field. So a quick back and forth with 5 tries on each side of the field (10 plays total). That's if I'm understanding it correctly.

now that I think of it though, how would they do that without having two sets of refs? and that's tricky because you want to have consistency with the refs, like if they're calling the game a certain way the whole game you wouldn't want a different ref to now be calling the overtime. so I actually don't know how they will implement that type of OT from a ref perspective.

So they've announced that they are partnering with Fox and ESPN to broadcast games. There's a real mixed bag to all of this. By partnering with those companies, the games are going to be shown on Fox, FS1, ESPN, and ABC. That's pretty strong in terms of content exposure. The other big thing to come out of the announcement is that there will be no rights fees paid by the networks. So those huge deals WWE got from USA and Fox are not in the cards for the XFL. The trade off comes in the form of exposure, and those companies will handle the production fees and selling of ads.

If they really wanted to make a splash they would've signed Kaepernick as their first player, at least that would generate buzz, cowards.

They'll play 10 games as opposed to the NFL's 16 game season.

And other leagues do have 20+ teams, but those leagues have also been around for half a century or more. And they all started much smaller than they are now.

    These things have to grow.

I think Vince likes challenges. XFL is one failure he had in life, and he reflects back on it a lot, which is why he's going for round 2, to remove that blemish. Hopefully we will get WBF Version 2.0 soon too.

2 Divisions of 4. Play the other 3 teams in your division home and away for 6 games. Play the other division 1 time for another 4. 10 game season.

Yeah I realized that later on. I get that since they are building teams and league that the draft and such would be way different this year. Either way I am excited to see him here and lets see how the season goes.

This was some smart free marketing for the XFL. I was cracking up at this video of PFT Commenter trying out to be kicker for the DC Defenders. Win win for the XFL and Barstool. I know Ochocinco was supposed to tryout as kicker too but he bailed. I'm not sure what other gimmick guys they let try out.

I loved that video. PFT didn’t completely suck too, so that made it fun. It’ll be like AFL for me, I’ll check it out a game or two to see if it keeps my interest.

My friends and I all have different NFL teams so we are trying to come to a consensus on which XFL team to root for.

It seems to have come down to Dallas and DC.

I am going with the BattleHawks since I am here in St. Louis. I think I can get $20 tickets to the home opener so I may try to go in a couple weeks. I love that the starting QB is from Ole Miss. We shall see how things go and how the league goes.

    I'm optimistic.

You think it'll be slightly worse than slightly worse?

Yeah but hey, it'll be fun to watch if just for these different rules and seeing how it all plays out.

    At least at first.

And fuck it. Baseball is still a ways off and I need something.

And no basketball doesnt count. Not until the playoffs.

    Great opening for the XFL.

Steve Levy just flat out stating "These guys want to make it to the NFL."

vince should go old school carny. fix games for storylines, train players on promos, stage fights for angles and rivalries, etc.
