The Infallible Rajah's Greatest NFL Defensive Players of All-Time List.

Let's beat the humdrum waiting for camp and preseason dog days and talk football.

    Top 20.

Regardless of position, who do you think are the most impactful defensive players the league has ever known? Is JJ Watt's modern short burst of a career better than Bob Lilly's illustrious long historical stay? Did Ronnie Lott or Rod Woodson do more as defensive backs than Lawrence Taylor or Derrick Thomas as hurricane-like pass rushers? Troy Polamalu vs Ed Reed? Have you seen grainy old footage of Ray Nitschke or Gino Marchetti and want to speak on their behalf?

No matter your subjective take or your historical window of knowledge, just give a shit who the best 20 have been and pm me your list and I'll compile the rest.

We can shoot the shit on the subject here until enough lists are entered.

    @Bandit, @Fro, @PurePlayer, @kdestiny, @Torn, @Kneeneighbor, @hithit, @Greed, @TimeSplitter, @BigAle, @Morrison, @chrisrandolph1985, @Mr. Boombastic, @Chris Scott, @Rancid_Planet, @Pablo Diablo, @Judas Iscariot, @Matthew, @_me, @Honey_Badger, @virmicious, @GOLDBERG'S BEST FRIEND, @New FN Show Stopper, @Alex ...

... I'm looking at a tremendous set of entries with your contributions. (thanks @CWE for already getting things started)

In all honesty this isn't my specialty. I have about a 20 year gap when I paid zero attention to football. Very interested in reading and discussing but I am not going to make a list.

Honestly, I'm kinda torn on how this should work. Should we include legends from the past that we never actually saw play, except for maybe a few highlight reels?

It feels stupid leaving them out, but football is different from a game like baseball where it is easier to compare guys from different eras based purely on stats, especially since like QB sacks weren't even recorded until the early 80s.

I dont think it has to be based purely on stats. If you're into the history of the game and you know how impactful certain players were in comparison with their peers, then I think it's safe to consider them among the greatest.

Include whomever you like. These lists are always a bit subjective whether or not that's the goal. None of us have ever seen every single snap of every d players careers over the span of the league and so there's always going to be gaps in expertise. It's ok though. This is meant to be a fun timekiller and a way to bat around football bs amongst fans when there's little else to chop it up about.

I don't care if you've studied the history of the league in books/film or if you've only been watching the last decade. Chances are there will be a handful of names that will be toward the tops of the majority of lists and the rest will be a subjective hodgepodge that we'll (hopefully) have a good time giving each other stick about and ultimately just ranting about the game.

The official criteria - chill the fuck out and have fun and think of the 20 dopest ever d dudes for you.

I haven’t made mine yet. But when I do I hope you all are ready for some subjective as shit rankings. Jason Taylor will definitely be making my list. Probably...Possibly...Maybe.

Update - 6 lists tallied up so far..

..with Reggie White, Ray Lewis, Deion Sanders, and Lawrence Taylor as the 1st place vote getters among the 46 players receiving votes.

this is a tough one to judge. I can't say I have a true grasp on how good even current defensive star players are, let alone historical ones. I mean with someone like JJ Watt or Von Miller their impact is apparent because they are attacking the QB and getting sacks, but with other positions it's harder. most of the time what a safety is doing isn't even on the TV feed, so you can judge off of interceptions and highlight type plays but without seeing coach's tape how do you really know? I guess you base it off what those in the know say about them, all-pro selections and the like.

this is opposed to other sports like baseball and basketball where you can pretty much see what every player does all the time, or other positions like quarterback or running back.

It is certainly more challenging. But I think there are lots of clues that allow people to make sound inferences - film, stats, written stories, quality of the defenses guys were on and their roles on those d's. And it will definitely fall to a great deal of subjectivity what with the different eras, judging one position against another, and of course just how much of these guys we've all seen. But it's a bit of a different task than just ranking any modern position and so I figured as fans it would be worth the give a fuck. Hope so anyway.

Yes, someone who actually put together a strong list of their own. You going to do so or just drive by and moan?

Don’t watch enough now to really enter a list but reading that I had to just say... where’s Mike Singletary?

Can't speak for anyone else, but he fell just out of my top 20. An all-time stud who could be counted on for the physical, cerebral, and emotional aspects of leading a defense all together. He wasn't a big play (ints, ff, tfl, etc) kind of guy, but more a bringing intensity, counted on to always be in the right spots, anticipating plays and breaking them up, surefire tackler, and never breaking his will kind of guy.

Wouldn't begrudge anyone who ranked him much higher, as he was always at a very high level, just think a couple dozen guys ever brought just a little more.

I started watching when I was around 10 and haven’t seen much in a long time, but to me that whole Bears defence was just awesome to watch, gave everything, never let their heads drop, ran through walls and all seemed to want to hit, with the heart soul and brain being Mike.

Keep meaning to start watching again but I never seem to get the time and no one I know watches, which is always half the fun.

He was just outside my top 20. Like, he was 21. Probably could’ve put him on my list, but the guys I did put on I personally like better. With that said, Singletary was a fucking beast.

He was the reason I decided to give the game a go in all honesty, I played two seasons and quite enjoyed it but it was that or rugby so there was no real competition in my eyes

Reggie White is one of those I’d agree with along with LT, another I saw would be Brice Smith from the same era, but I accept I’m old and out of touch

Those are all excellent choices to head up an all-time rank.

If not putting together your own list I at least hope you stick around and chat up and enjoy the reveal. Genuinely always like getting the perspective of people who are 'non-native' to yankball.

Ray Lewis is mine. Probably not true, but he was my fav and the Ravens were my second favorite team after the Lions. I left out some of the pre-80s players because I never saw them outside of an NFL Film.

I’ll certainly hang around, I might put together a list this morning if I get a chance, but if you just put ‘Monsters of the Midway’ plus Reggie and Bruce it’ll be close

Sounds good. We've still got some days at least for people to give it some thought.

This thing is clearly infallible after all.

I didn't put him on my list because he's definitely not in the top 20 to me, but I was a huge Bob Sanders fan during his time in Indy.

Fwiw, actual current players aren't (and imo shouldn't) be making up much if any of the final result.

Not sure how far back you're going to not consider it current product though.

I got Von Miller and Dwight Freeney on my list. Pretty sure Freeney is still active.

I just submitted mine. This was hard especially considering it was straight defense, may have been easier top 5 by each position, dt, de, olb, mlb, cb, fs, ss. I am curious to see who I've overrated and who I've overlooked with this.

Update - 12 lists tallied up so far..

..with Reggie White, Ray Lewis, Deion Sanders, and Lawrence Taylor still the 1st place vote getters among the now 50 players receiving votes.

Going out of town tomorrow and through the weekend, so this is a good time for a last call for voters while I'm out with the totals to be compiled when I get settled in sometime later next week.

    @PurePlayer, @Torn, @Greed, @TimeSplitter, @Morrison, @Chris Scott, @Rancid_Planet, @Judas Iscariot, @Matthew, @_me, @Honey_Badger, @virmicious, @New FN Show Stopper, @Alex

..sorry to bug any of y'all that haven't been interested the whole time, but I just wanna make sure anyone still wanting to participate gets the message. Hope any of you guys can find time in the coming week to put something together. Lots of football knowledge still to contribute to a final list that already looks pretty sharp.

This is the correct answer, without cocaine LT probably has a chance at the top spot, but the minister of defense had the longevity too.

Just because LT snorted any white line, including the yard markers, shouldn't be held against him.

Reggie came in at #2 for me. LT was just that damn scary.

I went with Ed Reed. Most instinctive, clutch defender I've ever seen. Always came up with the big play at the big time. Probably not a "dominant" as LT or Reggie but was more versatile and I watched his whole career.

Ray Lewis is arguably the best middle linebacker to ever play. I think he's certainly a top 20 defender.

Few guys in the 21-30 range that I'd like to see get a bump if we get any additional voters in the next day or two, but not too many that I'd like to see bumped off (only one in particular). Good problem to have I suppose.

I'd argue he's not the best MLB in his hall of fame class.

I would (and believe I did) rate Lewis as the best MLB of the last 20 years. But I rate Derrick Brooks as a better LB. I loved Derrick Brooks.

Although I did rate Ray Lewis higher than I did Ed Reed, it is interesting that you could make a compelling argument that Reed was more dominant at his position than Lewis was at his. It is just a reality that a MLB has more impact each and every play than a safety does, just like an all time great quarterback like Montana may always be rated higher than an all time great WR like Jerry Rice, even though Rice was more dominant at his position and in his role.

It's what makes this so terribly subjective and interesting.

You could make that argument, but I'd personally disagree.

I have Lewis as the best MLB to ever play with Reed was the 2nd best safety.

In an NFL with more 4000 yard passers than 1500 yard rushers, defensive backs are probably more valuable than linebackers these days. Unless you are a true 3 down LB like my boy Derrick Brooks.

That's really an oversimplification of looking at what one guy brings to the table relative to his position. Lewis covered an insane amount of ground from his mike spot. Everything from the run game to the play action game to the intermediate and flats passing game to defending mobile quarterbacks to blitzing those 4000 yard passers to goal line and short yardage situations to reading the offense and making pre-snap defensive calls.

The guy was much, much more than just a 2-down run thumper.

For the record, "Fuck Ray Lewis" is in reference to Ray Lewis the human being, not Ray Lewis the second best middle linebacker of all time.

Oh, for sure. I just mean the position is not as valuable as the Butkus/Lambert days. But he did everything a team could want from a MLB. But in the modern NFL, you might want a world class OLB more than a world class MLB.

I don't think the league has changed so radically through his playing days to preclude Ray Lewis from being ranked as an on-field impact player higher than a very, very good safety, in this case Ed Reed.

That was my only point in the discussion.

I'd only argue that Ed Reed's performance as an on-field impact player was higher than Lewis's (regardless of their positions) and that is why he is higher on my list.

Great player. His death was incredibly sad.

Some crazy things about that 7-sack game:
    • Dave Krieg only had 23 pass attempts. So essentially, for just under every 3 pass attempts he made, Derrick Thomas sacked him.
    • Dave Krieg posted his highest QB rating of the season in that game despite Thomas' heroic effort.
    • The Seahawks won on a would-be-8th-sack-from-Thomas-turned-into-a-rollout-TD.

How do we judge a man who caused so much brain damage before they were aware of what he was doing?

Night train recorded 14 interceptions in his rookie year, when there were only 12 games per season and the forward pass was rare. He is also credited with inventing the cornerback blitz, as a result of QBs eventually ignoring his receivers completely, leaving him open to rush the passer. Wish I could have seen him.

I don't follow the contention. They, as you said, weren't aware the long-term consequences of brain trauma and so can only be viewed as playing the game as physically as reasonably allowed. Not unlike today. What's left to judge differently?

I don't mean judging him as a person. I just mean that it's weird to glorify the biggest hitters in football history in the way we have in the past, knowing what we do now.

That does nothing to diminish Lane, as he was genuinely the first shut down corner in NFL history and is incredibly deserving of being on this list.

I don't think celebrating big hitters is necessarily a negative. I mean, even in today's game I see a big clean hit, shoulder through a guy's chest knocking him clear off his feet etc, and applaud a play that sends a message to the opponent of physical intimidation having lasting intended consequences on the rest of the game. The physicality of this game has it's rightful, and reasonably celebrated, place.

Taking brain trauma out of the equation, as again they were only playing with what they knew at the time, this is how I personally view the intentions of Night Train and his contemporaries. And league rules were in fact twice changed on account of some of Lane's 'techniques', which he rolled with and adjusted to accordingly. They weren't just playing with blindfolds on and maces in hand. Even in their era they were trying to be conscientious of the physical threats within the game, just adjusted for their contemporary knowledge. And again, not unlike today.

Suppose I just don't see them that differently than us, when considering benefit of the knowledge at hand.

I simultaneously root for people to get lit the fuck up and also to not get injured/concussed.

I also like to drink when I watch football, so my fence walking should be commended.... right?

What a legend. Underrated too, because of the great players he played with.

I'm happy to see so many old school guys make it on the list, I was hoping this wouldn't just be guys from the last 20 years. I had Night Train Lane in the top 10.

Derrick Thomas was a monster too, he would have made top 10, if had played 3 or 4 more years.

It's a majority of guys who played the bulk of their careers pre-1998.

It comes down to how people chose to vote. Most of my votes were for people I saw play with a few exceptions. So far only Derrick Thomas played when I was alive.

I'm sure he's stalking you. It's not like this is his thread and list that he's running or anything.

This is a last warning for you to stop your trolling soxfanatic.

The fuck are you talking about 'stalker'. This is a thread I created and am clearly keeping up and contributing to frequently. How fucking thick are you?

Seriously fuck off with your useless dumbshit non-contributions elsewhere. No one at all gives a fuck to read anything you ever have to say whatsoever.

I was being honest when I said that no one at all cares what you think.

When you do eventually fuck off you'll never be asked about. That's you.

May as well just get on with it.

You mean anonymous people on the internet don't care? Wow brilliant insight there. I think the truly frightening thing is that you think people actually do care what you have to say here. You should try having a real conversation sometime. Maybe at work sometime. Try it out. Could be good for you.
