I had Ed Reed at I think 15 or 16. Only because I have always put him and Troy Palamalu almost even.

I know it is. That why I said it. You don’t see it as weird to discount his excellence on some level because he didn’t do something he wasn’t meant to do?

I don't think I'm actually discounting him anything. Again, I've got him in my own top 20 defenders ever and the second best safety of all time behind only Ronnie Lott. Would his run support have been as excellent as Lott's had he been asked to display it? Perhaps, but I just don't know. I don't think it would've been altogether bad or anything, but I just don't know as it wasn't something that was put forth regularly. With Lott it was. And in the meantime Lott was also asked regularly to cover backs in the flats and receivers deep and he was completely adept, excelling in fact, at every task. This is grading on a scale of what was on the table.

So ya, I'm not taking away from Reed so much as maxing out what I saw at where it was displayed in full.

I also love this clip with Brady talking about how when you play against Ed you're always thinking about him

So much of his impact isn't easily transcribable as for his entry here it doesn't really do him justice.

His ability to absolutely shut down a half of a field and/or your team's best wideout.
That he managed 50+ picks despite offenses avoiding him at all costs.
    His unparalleled athleticism.
    Playing offense.
    Returning kicks/punts.
    Playing baseball.
Almost single-handedly bringing swagger to the game.
Back to back Super Bowl mercenary jobs in SF and Dallas and going from manning up Michael Irvin to Jerry Rice in the process.

    Just all around legend.

Is he the farthest from his competitor for "Greatest at his position ever" than any other position? I can't even think who I would call the 2nd best corner ever. Rod Woodson I guess but I don't think they are that close. I rate Woodson highly because he was able to slide over to safety so well. But as a pure cover corner, he isn't in Deion's class.

Reggie and LT are the two left but I would rather have Deion and Derrick Thomas than LT and Rod. Reggie is a tougher call.

Duh. That was quite the obvious miss by me. Though if you said I was stuck with Randy Moss at #2, I would not be crying.

Yeah, you guys suck. Reggie White was a force of nature. You don't get the nickname the Minister of Defense without being a total badass.

That being said, I did have LT at #2.

Reggie's versatility and ability against the run make him (far) superior to LT for me. LT did one thing better than anyone but he only really had that one skill. I would argue LT is closer to Deion at #3 than to Reggie at #1. I voted Ed Reed #1 but Reggie White is the only other person I considered for the top spot.

Were there any interesting outliers for LT or Reggie that ended up deciding it? Like, did anyone have either outside the top 5 (or even top 3)? You don't have to name names but I am curious if one person's ballot made the final choice.

Very fun list. Would totally be up for another ranking next off-season

I am assuming the points scoring was 20 for first, 19 for second, 18 for third....1 for 20th

I had Julius Peppers 4th (17 points) which means he only had 3 points amongst everybody else. I may have overrated him a bit but he definitely should have cracked the top 20. I feel like he has been a monster his whole career kinda like a poor mans Reggie White, but he's still phenomenal.

    154.5 Sacks, 4th all time
3 first team all pro, 3 second team all pro
    9 pro bowls
Only has had one season with fewer than 7 sacks in 16 seasons.

QBs would be fun if it wasn't blatantly obvious who would (and should) win. Same issue with WR. I would say best RB would be fun and at least 4 guys have a legitimate argument for number 1.

I still say Best Super Bowl because there are so many choices and I don't know what would be #1. Votes would be all over the place.

QB would be boring at #1 and likely #2 and #3 as well but interesting from like 4 through 20.

I'd still choose either of these over RB or WR.

Also I don't see why would couldn't do another one of these as the season is going

1 is a no brainer, but I think the rest of the list would be interesting.
    RB would also be fun.

Lowest they each got was 6th. They were in the top two several times and Taylor just ended up with a couple more 1st's to finish three whole points ahead.

QB would be fun outside of number 1, much like defensive players outside of 1 & 2.

WR I think would be a blast with the influx of stud receivers in the expanded passing game over the last decade or so, even if no. 1 is a no brainer.

I'd be all about RB, but I just did that in something similar on my Houston Texans mb. Wouldn't snub my nose at it if everyone wanted to do so, just not hyped to vote to do it again so soon.

All offensive players combined. Just like defensive players.

    That's not a bad idea.

Would be interesting to see how much people weigh offensive linemen into the mix.

QBs should be top 20, but I would cut Super Bowls to 10.

How about just ranking the Super Bowls this century? Pretty solid list of games if you start from 1999-00 Season (Rams/Titans) to This season

Favorite Ed Reed on-field anecdote: He intentionally played a certain coverage wrong multiple times early in the season because he knew Peyton Manning would watch it on tape. 10 weeks later, Manning ran a play, threw deep, and Reed sprinted across the field and picked it off.

Manning was baffled. Reed’s teammates were amazed. It looked, to a laymen, like a dumb throw by Peyton but later in the year, Belichick called it one of the greatest plays he’d ever seen a defender make. I asked some Ravens why. Found out it was a 10-week rope-a-dope by ER20
    .
Ed Reed was incredible. Congrats to the new Hall of Famer.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection meeting has concluded. Longest discussions for the modern-era finalists were held on Ty Law (27:16), Tony Boselli (26:10), Kevin Mawae (24:52), Don Coryell (22:37) and Tom Flores (18:54). The shortest was Ed Reed (2:20).
Imagine it only taking 2 minutes to decide someone is a Hall of Famer.

Probably took 2 minutes to watch the highlight video then 20 seconds for everyone to vote YES.
