Anyone on here a Jags fan? They've said they are not going after Dez now that their top receiver is out for the year, and they lost their top two from last year. I have no idea who any of them are now... not that I know anythinig about Lee, Hurns or Robinson either.

Good for Odell. It's crazy to think that a superstar player of his caliber getting up to $95 million (only $65 million guaranteed) is looked at as some colossal deal in this sport. If he lives up to the expectations and plays out the deal, he's getting Clint Capela money. Lorenzo Cain from ages 32-37 type money. It's the nature of the sport but the disparity of how little these guys make compared to other sports is jarring at times.

The Giants needed to lock him up and the deal should be a good one for them because he is just that good and still so young, barring anything unfortunate happening like injury or off field/on field meltdown.

It's hard to compare contracts, since the NFL is the only one that has a hard cap. NBA and MLB have luxury taxes, so they can spend whatever they want.

It will take more than a 4th at this point. Might take a 2nd.

While that is true, in the NFL they play 16 games whereas other sports play 82 or 162. I agree with your point though especially considering the NFL makes more money than the NBA or MLB.

They should trade a 4th to NYJ for Bridgewater.
I forget, are you a colts fan? If not that is an odd pick. I do think they will bounce back and those 5 draft picks in the top 2 rounds should help a lot if they hit on a few of them, but it's hard to imagine them in the super bowl.

Im a Packers fan. I think it's unrealistic, and I was originally choosing between HOU and JAX. But no one had picked Indy yet, and since points are involved and I started thinking of teams who we all thought would suck last year (JAX for example) making the playoffs, I went with the gamble. Other than the 12 mentioned, I'd say Titans, Panthers, Cowboys, Dolphins and the 49ers will end up with 8-8 or 9-7 seasons but end up missing out. No team wins more than 14 games in the regular season. Pats start out 0-2.

seems like the Packers are the sexy pick every year. they only made the super bowl once since 1997.

I think their offense has gotten a bit worse since last season and they are losing one of their top defensive players for the season, so I am confident it will be another missed year for them, maybe even missing the playoffs entirely.

Which top defensive player are they missing for the entire year? Unless you mean Jake Ryan - their 2nd MLB behind Blake Martinez - who was probably not even a top 11 defensive player on this year's team... I am drawing a blank at any other significant injuries.

I thought he notched a shit load of tackles for them last season?

I do still stand by my point that I don’t think either side of the ball has really improved.

Their offense will automatically be better this year because they were without Rodgers for most of it. I don't think they will lose that much in the passing game replacing Nelson with Graham. Their defense is really dependent on if their rookie corners can contribute right away on starting caliber level or not.

when you have a guy like Rodgers everyone just thinks if he's healthy they will almost always be contenders, which is true. same as it was for Peyton Manning. so yeah maybe they get overrated but if it comes down to Vikings vs Packers, even if the Vikings are the far more rounded team, Rodgers is the equalizer.

I just really want to see a Brady vs Rodgers Super Bowl as I've stated in here before.

For tackles you're thinking of Blake Martinez, who had 144. Not to say Ryan is chopped liver, he had 52. But Martinez is the guy.

As for defense improving though, they drafted 2 of the top CBs in the draft, signed tramon williams in FA (7th best CB in 2017 in terms of QB rating when targeting him) and replaced their DC with Mike Pettine, who in a DC capacity has never finished outside the top 10 in total defense. Wilkerson, with his risks, is also an upgrade from last year too (and his best seasons have been under Pettine too coincidentally enough).

I'm not saying their defense is suddenly gonna be top 5 or anything. But I think it's clear they improved on the defensive side of the ball.

Outside of having a healthy Rodgers, I agree their offense didn't improve. At best, Jimmy graham and marcedes lewis is a wash for losing Jordy. But with a healthy Rodgers, it doesn't need to improve imo. They've been within a game or two of the superbowl multiple times in the last 7 years with this offense despite having a much worse defense.

You think the Pats would go after Dez? Talking to some guys at work today and to us, it seemed like the Pats would be the most logical landing spot for him.
Granted, I have no clue how they are looking at WR, so i figured i would ask you.

It's only been three preseason games for Mike Vrabel. But I just have to say this somewhere.

I'm not 100% certain that he knows what the fuck he's doing.

I'm for it but it doesn't sound like they're considering him. They will probably add an outside WR from other teams' cuts just not Dez. Maybe Austin Carr if he gets cut by the Saints (he was cut by the Pats last preseason and got scooped up by the Saints before he could make it on our practice squad). They could bring back free agent Brandon LaFell who had success here before. Or perhaps a trade. Golden Tate was a name thrown around as speculation but I'd be surprised if they pulled something off that big. Who knows, probably not Dez though.

After cutting Jordan Matthews, Kenny Britt, Malcolm Mitchell and having Eric Decker retire, they are thin there. Their depth chart is:

    Edelman (suspended until week 5)
    Chris Hogan
Phillip Dorsett (seems to be gelling in the system, maybe could break out this year)
    Cordarrelle Patterson (gadget player)

That's basically it. There are a bunch of no-name guys fighting for the last WR roster spot (including rookie 6th rounder Braxton Berrios). Maybe one will make the team, but more likely it's "outside hire" to fill the last spot.

They have a logjam of young receivers behind him and Cobb being in the final year of a contract he hasnt lived up to with extensions coming for other players indicates he isnt in their longterm plans. He is also probably their #3 receiver, 4 if you count Graham. (Allison will be starting perimeter receiver opposite of Adams; Cobb will be on all 3wr sets mostly in slot).

Aaron Rodgers gets his turn as highest paid player in NFL history. Looking like something in the neighborhood of:

    • 4 Years / $134,000,000
    • $100,000,000 Guaranteed
    • $33,500,000 per year
    • $80,000,000 in cash by March 2019

which they run a lot of. They are in win now mode. It would be idiotic to trade their 2nd best WR for a future draft pick when it would certainly make their offense worse than it is.

Young receivers can't be counted on in the NFL. Look at all the first round receivers from last year. None of them really contributed much. Sometimes it takes a couple years and they can step in when Cobb moves on

Good for Rodgers. Also not sure if it was mentioned in here or not, but GB traded Hundley to SEA for a 6th rd pick yesterday too.

I guess $80,000,000 in the next 7 months makes it a little easier to get over being dumped by Olivia Munn.

hard to say without knowing what they gave up. he is only signed for this year so they are just trading for him to be their backup. if they want him to be their QB after Brees they will need to sign him in free agency next offseason (and if Brees is still around I doubt he will sign with them since I assume he wants to start). but he is certainly a good backup. I wish he was my team's backup.

Michael silver reporting they gave up their 3rd rd pick. So (assuming it's a 2019 3rd), they will enter the draft without a 1st or 3rd round draft pick.

I wish he was my team's backup.
Obviously it depends on the long-range outlook on him, but if he's the guy to take over and he's happy there this year, the price is going to be the price you pay for him. If Brees goes down, you're likely in a much better position today than you were yesterday. It holds a lot of value today and potentially going forward. Unless they gave up the farm for him, it's hard to imagine this is going to be a bad deal for the Saints.

Rooting for Teddy big time. If he could lead that team post-Brees, that would be really cool.

I wouldn't have given up a 3rd for him on a 1 year deal. The most likely possibility is this gives them no on-field benefit. I mean yes Brees is old and could get hurt but I think he's missed 3 games in the last 14 seasons. Very durable. But yea, maybe they extend Teddy or re-sign him. Maybe they know Brees is on his last year and they want to try out Teddy to take over in 2019. There's a lot we don't know but my first impression is that I would not give up a 3rd for 1 year of a good backup QB when you have a super durable hall of famer starting.

I can see that line of thinking, but all it takes is one play and you're toast. If you're a team that has aspirations of making a run, you need to have contingencies in place. The way I look at it, if this doesn't work in the sense Bridgewater isn't a part of the future, things probably went incredibly well for the team this season. Even if that's the case, Brees maybe goes out on a high note and then that leaves Bridgewater still there. Just feels like a lot has to go "wrong" for this to work against them.

Bridgewater should be able to be retained for a steal of a price. His contract he signed with NYJ - without incentives - was an unguaranteed amt of 5mil. That was before they'd drafted Darnold and knew they had a starting QB too. So barring an injury to Brees that makes Bridgewater more valuable and potentially showcases his talent, the 29 other teams will still be seeing an unknown product who hasnt really played since 2015. So NO, if they like what they see throughout the year in practice, could potentially sign Bridgewater to a 4yr deal at a clip much less than the going rate for starters and come away with a steal while simultaneously giving him a year to learn behind one of the best. Also worth noting Teddy is only 25 years old right now...

I think there is a team out there though that would pay Teddy more than what we think is a bargain price. Jimmy G got paid a ton for playing 4 games. Teddy played a full year as a playoff QB.

if the Saints decide to sign Teddy long term anticipating he takes over for Brees after this year then a 3rd rounder for a starting qb isn't a lot at all.

It was different with Jimmy though. Looking at current teams, who do you think would pay big money for a QB who (assuming Brees starts all 16) will have not started a game in the last 3 seasons?

Normally the Browns and Jets would be prime candidates to do something foolish like that, but having just drafted a quarterback in the first round it is not likely. But there are lots of foolish teams in the NFL.

I am fucking stoked! Honestly think this will be worth it no matter how much they give up really, this could be quite the game changer for their defense.

They are going for it this season with the slew of moves and signings they’ve made.

Big move. The NFC North is looking pretty damn tough right now. For the Bears, losing the draft picks will likely sting but this is a no brainer (IMO). If Trubisky is the real deal then you have your QB on a rookie deal for the next 3 years which means you can easily afford to pay a game changing defender at top market value. It will be interesting to see how Gruden and the Raiders do after this move. It's a move that someone like Belichick would totally make but not one that other coaches/teams can necessarily pull off without looking foolish.

Cut day today. 4pm deadline to get rosters down to 53. Lots of news will be coming down the pike.

Raiders get at the very least two first round picks if not more. What the Bears are getting back though is a superstar on defense in an area that might’ve been their only weakness on defense as a pass rusher, but he has shown to be so much more.

I know a lot think it may be a hefty price, but you are getting a hall of fame caliber defender in the prime of his career.

    I will take it.

He wanted big money, Gruden didn’t want to give it to him.

They are in a rebuild for the next year or two

The broadcaster getting paid 100m contract didn't want to pay a top-5 defensive player. Classic.

They are in a rebuild for the next year or two
Derek Carr is an above average QB and Cooper is a middling good WR. The argument for not paying one of the best players in football is that inferior guys also need to be paid well?
They’re paying 33 year old Jordy Nelson $14million. So are you a win-now or full rebuild? Because paying Nelson and not Mack makes zero sense.

I just don't get the move made by a guy out of the league for over a decade with no clue of a player's worth.
Also, do you really trust Gruden to use those picks wisely?

    Trade official, source tells ESPN:

Bears get: Khalil Mack, a 2020 second-round round pick and a conditional 2020 fifth-round pick.

    Raiders get: 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2020 third-round pick, 2019 sixth-round pick.

So Bears get back second-round pick, too per Adam Schefter

    Love it

I scooped Breida in the cash league, BGM then scooped Morris. we'll see who has the better year if McKinnon is indeed out.

either way, hopefully it isn't the feared ACL tear. but if it is, at least he got paid before this year.

6 years $141 million for Mack. Gonna be worth it.

Shame for McKinnon. He's been a great talent for Minnesota and he deserved the chance to be the top back somewhere

Hate it or love it, gotta respect Nike if nothing else for going all in here..

    @darrenrovell

BREAKING: Nike had been paying Colin Kaepernick all along, waiting for the right moment. That moment is now, as he becomes the face of the company’s 30th anniversary of the “Just Do It” campaign.

God help us. People are blind to issues outside their comfort zone. I feel bad for those who can’t open their eyes and see the issues in the world that effect others. Good on you Nike.

Le'Veon Bell has still not reported. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is generally the big day for NFL weekly game plans to be installed so there is an expectation he will be at practice tomorrow in order to play week 1. If he doesn't show up tomorrow then we're into new territory. I for one hope he holds out and the Browns shock the world with a week 1 upset!

would it be as big of a shock though if Bell doesn't play? The line is at 3.5 right now. I am assuming it will drop to around 2 if he doesn't play.

True, I can't believe the line is that low. I may have to jump on the Steelers there even though I will be rooting for the Browns. I mean even if Bell is out, and I know there have been plenty of offseason changes, this is a 13-3 team going against an 0-16 team. Bovada has it at 4 points. Hmmmmm

    Edit: my week 1 bets:

    Steelers (-4) at Browns
    Falcons (+3) at Eagles
    Lions (-7) vs Jets

You are making it seem like they are the same teams from last year though. The Browns aren’t really close to the same team and they played them close in both games with that 0-16 team

All true. But from a gambling perspective, the Browns likely are getting more love than they deserve because they were on Hard Knocks (I did not watch the show myself). They're a team that's lost 13 straight home openers and are 1-11 in their last 12 games vs the Steelers. They haven't won a game on Sunday since 2015. The 4 point spread was appealing for these reasons.

Now with that said, I was also partially betting on Le'Vevon showing up today, which he has not. So that is not good for my bet but we will see what happens.

Rapsheet says Bell can report by Saturday in order to receive his pay check for week 1, even if the team doesn't play him (which they almost certainly wouldn't). That would make sense for him to receive his check but have to play 1 fewer game. Or is there a chance he really will hold out longer? This is a major story now. And the Steelers are getting ever more pissed at him.
@BGMaverick I'm feeling more happy about our trade now. Although I would still bet on him showing up by Saturday and playing week 2.

Steelers players (particularly his O-line) are now sounding off on Bell.

    G Ramon Foster:
“What do you do? Here’s a guy who doesn’t give a damn, I guess so we’ll treat it as such. I just hate it came to this."
"He’s making 7 times what I make, twice as much as Al (Villanueva) is making and we’re the guys who do it for him.”
"In the ultimate team sport we’ve created a league of individuals."
"My mom died, I went to the funeral and came to camp the next day... Al (Villanueva) has seen people die and has come and given his all to this team."
"It's a little bit tiresome now. I'm tired of the antics."

    C Maurkice Pouncey:
"Why play hide and seek? Why let your agent say this? Just man up and tell us what you’re going to do. The business part...I get it. But not if it's game day. We have a game this Sunday, we're all the way into the gameplan and you're still not here?.... At this point, it’s bigger than business.”

    G David DeCastro:
"We all thought he'd be here today. He makes us all kind of look stupid a little bit."
"Just sit out the whole year then."

    yikes, what a mess.

EDIT: added more quotes. this is seriously crazy for his O-line to be saying these things.

The outcome of this is surely Bell playing for another team next year, right?

If so, PIT must absolutely get whatever they can in return rather than risk losing him in FA for nothing but a potential compensatory pick at the end of round 3 (best case scenario, if he were to get the lucrative contract he is seeking).

I honestly don't know where they go from here. How does he come back to the team after those comments? I guess it could be smoothed over but man Tomlin runs such a loose ship. There's always dumb drama like this. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches encouraged it. Certainly they didn't try to stop it.

He will be hard to trade given that no team can extend him beyond this year. And he can't be traded until he signs his franchise tag anyway. So a team would need to take on 14,5 million in cap space right away (or I guess the pro rated amount depending on when it is in the season). Oh and by the way Bell doesn't want to even play at that salary. So would he report to the new team? Would the new team need to give him more money just to be a rental?

If Bell were traded to a team like Cleveland or Indy they could sign him long-term today. There’s a lot of value in Indy’s draft stock, plus they could always tack on one of their young RB’s in return. It won’t happen though.

This is inaccurate. The deadline to sign franchise players to long term extensions has already passed. If he signs his franchise tender then he cannot be extended until the season is over.

So if he were traded he would have to sign a franchise tag with that team then sign a long-term deal at the end of season?
