kneejerk reactions to this game which I've been not really watching but have on in the background:

This is a shellacking. Ugly ugly start for the Lions. Matt Patricia, who I like and will root for to succeed because he's the man, is for sure going to be another Belichick coordinator who does nothing as a HC. I mean the guy is smart but it's not like the Pats defenses have been anything special lately. Belichick will have a bend-don't-break defense no matter who his coordinator is. I hope I'm wrong.

I don't root for the Jets to succeed by any means, but if Darnold is decent and Pats/Jets games have a little juice to them, I'm all for it. Reignite the rivarly. And Bowles is legit, it's hard not to like him.

I'm 0-3 in bets this week (Lions, Steelers, Falcons) so that's a bad start. I'm tempted to bet Rams -6.5 to get a head start on getting back to even. The Raidoers are going to implode right?

EDIT: officially in on Rams -6.5. if you fade me based on my losing streak I won't blame you

I gotta assume the Rams kill the Raiders. But based on how certain I was of some things this weekend... I'm not so sure haha. For example, the score in this NYJ@DET game is not too far off of what I would have predicted... only if you swapped the teams' scores lol. I thought the Lions were going to smoke them handedly.

It has been a few hard years as a Detroit/Michigan anything fan. The Lions have actually been the better pro team in Detroit, but they are no good. I hope they can turn it around, but being a lifelong Detroit sports fan has taught me better.

How bad would it be to just run this setup (two MNF games) and get rid of TNF?

you've got this west coast game running until 1:30am east coast time. its highly possible you lose most of the east coast audience cause people have work the next morning. so the first game would have to start maybe an hour and a half to two hours earlier, which would take it out of primetime, cause i doubt they run the two games simultaneously.

Yeah, that's the obvious issue at hand. Maybe you just start the second game an hour earlier than it did tonight and start it on ESPN 2 or whatever. I know you brought up the simultaneous issue, but maybe this is a decent compromise. I don't know, just curious to see if it had legs. Most people tend to think the actual level of play Thursday is not as good.

I can barely watch the first half of the Sunday night, Monday night, and Thursday night games as it is. Can't stay up until 11 watching football when I have to get up for work at 5 AM. Adding a second, later game on Monday night would definitely decrease the viewership like Morrison said.

Aside from the scheduling conflicts just discussed, the bad part would be the NFL would lose about $100 million per year that they earn from TNF.

The revenue they would earn from a second MNF game jammed into a limited primetime window would be a small fraction of what they earn on TNF.

So I'm just irrational in assessing that people think the level of play on Thursday isn't that bad. Haha. Got it.

you are only irrational in thinking the NFL would do something that deprives them of lots of money

Dez Bryant probably shouldn't be mouthing off on Twitter if he's wanting to play any time soon. His tape from recent games probably doesn't help his cause, either. He never felt like a match for the Patriots and they went ahead and signed a cast-off from THE BROWNS rather than him.

1-3 on the year after the Rams cover.

    WEEK 2 BETS:

    Pats -2 at Jags
    Saints -8.5 vs Browns

also strongly considering Chiefs +5 at Steelers

Just another reason why Dez probably doesn't interest many teams.

You were right so far not to feel confident.

AJ Green with 3 TDs in a half. It's like I'm watching Madden with someone trying to get OPOTW

Good slate of games this week. I am looking forward to the AFC title rematch although history does not favor the Jags.

Tom Brady career vs the Jags (5 regular season games, 3 playoff games)

    8-0
    19 TDs
    2 INTs
    71.6% completion
    Passer rating 113.93

The last (and only) time the Jags beat the Pats was in a wild card game in January 1999.

This version of the Jags (last year to present) is probably the best version of the Jags since 99. But I still picked NE. I have a feeling Ramsey is gonna get brought back down to earth a little bit...

I've always been indifferent to the Jags, never really liked them, but they've mostly sucked so it's hard to hate them too, but man I wish they would bring back their original uniforms. These were so great, the multicolored helmet they have now just looks cheap and crappy

Josh Gordon released by the Browns. Per a source, Gordon did not report to the facility on time this morning.

I hope the guy is alright. Do we know what substances he struggles with, other than weed?

ummm.... Browns are releasing Josh Gordon.

Does that mean there is news of a failed drug test forthcoming? Or something having to do with that child support case?

edit - fro beat me to it

Wonder if this increases likelihood of CLE signing Dez. Does another team sign Gordon? Does he go to NE, clean his act up and score 23 TDs with Brady?

I doubt it. Belichick isn't gonna sign a guy he can't rely on to be active the rest of the year. Reliability is more important than talent to him.

Now it's being rpt'ed by Schefter that he will likely be traded rather than released. That makes me think it's not drug related and they're just done dealing with the headache?

I hate the look of the rams helmet and jerseys. Why do they still have gold and white together? I always thought the gold and navy blue looked a lot cooler on their helmets than white and navy blue.

Zimmer will leave him in Green Bay. Three missed field goals and a blocked punt td, I’ll take the tie over a loss.

Clay Matthews roughs the passer in the 4th quarter on a game-winning INT for GB. He did pretty much the same thing against the Bears last week (rough the passer on 4th down at the end of the game), and this time it actually came back to bite the Packers in the ass. He's been complete ass the last two weeks, beyond those two mistakes.

Unreal finish to the Packers/Vikings game. Sad thing is I bet he would come around if he could at least hit one FG.

I picked the Vikings to win in my money pool at work thinking that they're the stronger team right now, and I am still so pissed that the Packers lost that game.

Bills are so bad Vontae Davis retired at half time instead of continuing.

Also not been a great weekend for kickers. Unless you're one currently looking for a job I guess.

    I think it'll be a good fit.

Dan Bailey to the Vikings. Tough break for Daniel Carlson. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, and has had too many kicker blunders, this move needed to be made.

He's got to show he's able to be trusted before anyone should get remotely excited. Name value alone sounds exciting, but there's still a long way to go.

I agree, and I said before I doubt the Pats would touch him for that reason. I have serious doubts that he will even make it the duration of the season given that the Browns don't want him. that said, it's exciting and it fills a need.

I am reading a lot of Dan Bailey excitement in MN but let's not forget the man missed 5 of his last 12 when in Dallas.

Wasn't that in part due to injury? The only thing I remember about him last year was that he got hurt.

I know some Giants fans think Eli been finished for 3 years now but still think picking Barkley was right choice. O-line been garbage 2 games in, he doesn't even have time to execute a dunk pass. Front office is 100% to blame. A pocket passer such as Eli needs protection and your the o-line doesn't give him that.

Giants can't even run with #1 pick Barkley. He has to juke 2 defensive players everytime before he reaches the line of scrimmage. Thats pathetic.

Should be noted that both Dallas and New York have "generational running backs" and both have struggled to move the ball at all this year.

It seems that it's not a direct correlation, other than them having those types of backs.

Eli is definitely beyond his peak, the O-line is terrible, but there are options Eli can use.
Dak is either trying to find his way as a passer or was fool's gold, the O-line is not healthy, and Dak doesn't really have consistent options on the outside.

They added two guys to the offensive line one is the highest paid tackle and one was a 2nd round pick. Yes it still doesn't make them a good offensive line but they knew what they had. If you have a good offensive line, you DON'T need to draft a running back at number 2 overall. That is the problem. A RB at number 2 overall should make up for a bad offensive line. Manning is done. He can't throw down field, he can't evade a rush, and he gets scared in the pocket. He has all the weapons in the world and he still should be able to do something. Everyone makes an excuse for him whether it's a bad offensive line, Beckham getting hurt, yadda yadda. What was the excuse from 2012-2015 where his numbers dropped each year? Now they are forced to draft a qb next year which delays their progress and who knows if next year's crop will be better and who knows were they end up picking. Surely it won't be in the top 5 like this past year.

They might be but I think if they stay healthy, they will win more than 3 games. I would think Beckham, Barkley, Engram, Shepard, and adding a new LT and guard are worth at least a couple more wins.

Barkley seems like the real deal so I don't think the Giants chose unwisely but they will probably regret it if Sam Darnold becomes a franchise QB. Who knows if that will happen. I suppose you could say the same for Josh Allen and Rosen but even if those guys become something, the Giants probably would have taken Darnold anyway. These draft decisions are so hard to get right, I can't blame them for picking the safe bet if the QBs weren't blowing them away. Time will tell. If Barkley is Todd Gurley, it will be hard to say they were wrong unless Darnold becomes a top 5 QB.

They need to solve their QB situation for sure but it can be done in ways other than the draft. Look at Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Garoppolo, who are all good QBs teams acquired in the past year. Then look at QBs who came out of the 2nd round or later (Brady, Carr, Dalton, Wilson, Keenum). Teams can get competent QBs, it's not like taking a high draft pick is the only way.

And yea the Giants could be a top 5 pick this year for sure.

Is it possible the Giants are in the bottom five? Yes.
Do I think it's highly likely? No.

There's at least 3-4 awful teams and I doubt the Giants are as bad as they've looked the entire season.

Here is the problem with your Gurley comparison. Gurley was not the 2nd overall pick. I just can't fathom how a team can take a RB at 2 overall when you have a declining qb and no offensive line. Even if Darnold becomes a top 15 QB, I think the Giants will regret the decision.

You are naming guys like Cousins and Alex Smith but those are extremely rare situations. They are also situations that happened within the last year. Free agent QB's rarely ever become available and you can't count on it happening all the time. Would they be able to afford paying someone 90 million guaranteed when they are paying their receiver, left tackle, and running back top money? and yes Barkley is getting paid top money for being picked 2 overall. Eventually you have to pay Collins, Shepard, Engram. At least ones that are franchise savers. Then you named late round qb's that were drafted. Again not common and the Giants just cut their 3rd round QB this year lol.

Why wouldn't you want a top qb on a rookie deal with a competent running back over a competent qb and great running back getting paid qb money?

It comes down to player evaluations. If you get a Carson Wentz then that is a draft pick you'd be foolish not to take. If you get a Blake Bortles, I would rather have Barkley. If we re-did the 2015 draft I wouldn't take Jameis Winston over Todd Gurley because I think an average to below average QB isn't better than a top 3 RB, and you can acquire an average to below average QB outside of the top 10.

I don't know anything about Sam Darnold because I don't study draft prospects like that. As I said, if Darnold is a franchise QB then the Giants will regret it. Let's circle back in 3 years.

The financial stuff, yes a rookie QB is a very good value because veteran QBs make SO much and veteran RBs make so little. So I agree with that. Still, get the best players. A rookie RB with a cap hit of 7 to 9 million isn't going to break the bank.

Bit of a grey area there. He is their #2, I would say that is the primary reason they acquired him. If he performs well in their system then I'm sure they'd be happy to have him as their successor but it will mean they need to re-sign him. Unless Brees retires, that means Teddy will need to accept being a backup again for 2019. If he has an offer from a different team where he has the chance to start, he probably will want that instead.

So bottom line, given that it's a 1-year deal it's hard to call him a succession plan at the moment. The relationship between player and team will unfold over the season and into the offseason. Brees's plans will play a big factor.

Player for player is a tough comparison because I would absolutely take Jameis Winston and David Johnson over Barkley and whatever qb you draft in round 3. Johnson was taken in the 3rd round and it's easier to find a great rb in the middle rounds than a qb.

I would take Barkley and Russell Wilson over Jameis and DJ

but yea if your point is that the Giants made the wrong decision based on the knowledge we have right now then that's fine. drafting for need is not usually smart (IMO) but the exception to that is when you need a QB. ultimately though, years from now, we probably won't be analyzing what the giants needed in 2018 when we circle back to this draft, we'll be analyzing if Barkley is a perennial pro bowler and if Sam Darnold is still a good or even starting caliber QB in the league or not. if they believed Darnold was the real deal franchise QB then they should have taken him because Eli does in fact suck.

LOL. I am using players in the same draft!!! What QB was taken in the 4th or 5th for the Giants? Lauletta or whatever his name is.

Looks like Maroon 5 is the halftime show for the Super Bowl. Some of the older dudes in my office are oddly upset about this and complaining they want "real music" for the halftime show. Does the artist even matter anymore if it's all pre-recorded? Do you sit and watch the halftime show or just use it as background noise for 20 minutes? I mean we always have people over and halftime is when people gravitate back to the kitchen for a few minutes anyways, so I can't imagine letting something like this upset me to the point of vowing to not watch the game.

I love a good halftime show. Gaga a couple years ago was an all-time classic.

Maroon 5 will be one I certainly use to make rounds to the kitchen/bathroom/etc. But it has zero effect on my outlook on the SB itself.

I am surprised Taylor Swift hasn't gotten one yet. I took my daughter to her stadium tour for her birthday and I admit she puts on a good show.

Taylor would be the obvious best choice but I think she's doing the College Football Championship halftime show this year instead.

Maroon 5 doesn't turn the needle for me at all. I didn't really even know they were still popular.

Anyone who talks about "real music" is probably an over the hill asshole.

I'm surprised taylor swift hasn't either honestly. I am not a fan whatsoever, but she is one of the biggest music stars in the world it seems. She would make a lot more sense than Maroon 5.

I think Taylor Swift has a deal with Coca-Cola, which would eliminate her as a halftime candidate as long as Pepsi continues to sponsor it.

Not sure why it feels like people are more upset about the halftime show this season than they normally are. Exactly what is it about Maroon 5 that makes this year's show extra awful? Sorry it can't be something badass like Beyonce, Katy Perry or The Black Eyed Peas.

It's the fucking SB halftime show.

They are not going to ask Slayer to play.

    ...although can you fucking imagine?

it's interesting how they went with all the old legends in the late 2000s. I mean they had Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Springsteen and The Who in consecutive years. Then they probably got some market research that said they needed to target the younger crowd so they've gone with all hip, current acts since then. Or they just ran out of old legends to book.

Anyway, I don't think people really care that much but it's a conversation point. I mean shit it's the most watched tv event in the world so people will have their 2 cents about it.

I can see why it's hard for the NFL to please everyone especially in this divisive national climate. Other than Taylor Swift I'm not sure who would be a slam dunk booking. I would argue Drake would be good and has the popularity and hits for it but I'm sure a lot of people would be mad about that. People in the rap community would say someone like Kendrick Lamar but even I know he isn't popular enough for that to fly. Drake at least has huge pop appeal.

Ed Sheeran I guess is a pop star of that level. People probably want rock bands but rock bands just aren't that popular anymore, not like they used to be. I guess that's how you end up with Maroon 5.

Should be noted that the run of legends came right after the Janet Jackson ordeal. I think that had a lot to do with the run of legends.
