doesn't say anything about doing a handstand during the anthem. that's a form of standing.

The NFLPA though responds that they'll 'challenge any aspect of the new policy that is inconsistent with the cba'. link

So, maybe not so cut and dry.

Seems like social media was pissed when players were protesting. Now this rule comes out and all you see is outrage.
The NBA has the same rule.

The rule that you can't protest. It was just said the NBA has the same rule as the new NFL rules.

because nba players werent protesting. there is outrage at the new nfl rule because players were protesting, there was controversy around it and now a rule has been made that prevents those demonstrations on field. the nba did not have the entire controversial lead up that the nfl had, so its not in peoples minds or part of the conversation.

Why would there be outrage at a rule they've had, and everyone's been abiding by peacefully, for decades?

To be fair though, key figures (the biggest ones too... Lebron, Popp, Kerr) have said more harsh things about the current administration than Kaep or anyone in the NFL has, and it's been met with favorable reaction compared to the reaction we've seen on the NFL side.

It kinda feels like the best solution for the NFL is to just stop talking about this and the problem would go away. I mean it pretty much went away after 2016, until Trump brought it back up a few weeks into the 2017 season.

I'm not surprised though, it's not like Goodell and the billionaire owners have made any smart, savvy public relations decisions in like 5 years anyways.

To be fair to what exactly? Those aren't exactly comparable to draw a negative reaction.

You said NBA players aren't protesting anything. To be fair, they are. While they're not taking a knee during the anthem, I think they are certainly protesting with their words.

NBA players have done some protest stuff in recent years with no real repercussions. An NBA player gained infamy when he sat for the anthem twenty years ago.

That's fair. Still don't think it's on par with the public's perception of 'disrespecting' the national anthem though in terms of garnering a negative reaction.

Also nba and nfl fanbases aren't one and the same.

To be fair, Football is the sport that places the biggest focus on the national anthem. I don't think I remember many basketball games where they air it on TV. Baseball does for some of their higher profile games.

Football shows the national anthem before every game.

Protesting = expressing an objection to what someone has said or done.

Lebron, the biggest star in the NBA, has called trump a bum, refused to say his name, said he isn't the leader of our country, etc etc etc.

I agree 100% about the fan bases being different. If Brady/Rodgers/Brees said what Lebron did, I expect they'd be met with a much different reaction.

And I still don't think those things resonate the same as a 'disrespecting' the flag/anthem. Perhaps if Lebron knelt for the anthem we would see just how different the fanbases are, but nba players had the chance to do so and didn't, likely aware of the backlash.

Be really interesting if any players said fuck and decided to come out, kneel, and take the fine.

Indeed it would, because the fine would be assessed to the team/owner, and not the player. At that point, the interest will be in which owners choose to eat the fines (as NYJ has said they would plan to do), and which teams decide to fine their players (which would potentially mean constituting new team rules outlawing the act).

The Lions will protest by keeping their talent in the locker room during the entire game. That will show them.

If people want to start pm'ing best defensive player lists I'll see how many we get to start and set a deadline relative to involvement after that.

Actually would rather enjoy putting this together if the football peeps were interested, participating, and it some good talk going.

if you want people to participate I would look at the post-count list for this thread and @ everyone who has posted in here this year in your post with instructions on how to submit a list (top 10, top 15, whatever)

you could also make a new thread if you want it separate.... still @ everyone in the new thread

Thinking 20. Not a mandatory 20 necessarily, but best d players ever has a deep, deep run of choices and the more selections people submit the more flavor the reveal will have. Again, not kicking lists away with less than that, just encouraging people to dig in a bit for sake of a (hopefully) fun topic that will (hopefully) pay off in the end.

Excellent suggestions. Tied the fuck up atm with work. This weekend will have a window where I can really send out flyers and put together an intro thread. If anyone wants to begin sending lists that's perfectly ok and I encourage everyone interested to begin giving your favorite defensive standouts a good once over to get ready to finalize submissions.

Probably a dumb question, but can you clarify for me:

We are to send you a list of our top 20 (or however many) defensive players at any position?

Is that correct? If so, what happens next?

I am 100% in, just want to make sure I know what I'm doing haha.

Your take on the top 20 defensive players to ever play the game. If you think Ronnie Lott was more impactful than Lawrence Taylor, so be it. If you think JJ Watt has already done enough to be an alltime top 2-3, so be it. If you've watched enough nfl films to want to vouch for Deacon Jones or Joe Greene, so be that. Maybe all you've seen is the 90's and onward and only know the likes of Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, and Troy Polamalu, great.

20 guys you think made the most impact on defenses throughout your knowledge of the history of the league.

Send it to me and I'll do the rest.

Saw something that literally zero of Owens' former teammates were going to be present to support him at the induction ceremony (although Chad Johnson said on twitter he would be there). He probably just feels really ostracised. Although I know the other side of the coin is simply that he brought this on himself with his personality over the hears.

I was definitely looking fwd to his speech though.

TO should have his induction ceremony in his driveway while he does sit ups.

I’m not upset at all. We didn’t have to cheat to get ours so......
Also, we’ve been to 3, won 2, in the last 22 years. Not many teams can say that, so try again

Yes, Wisconsin is a hot bed of sporting success with all the titles recently for the Packers, Brewers and Bucks.

that was the buzz for about 30 minutes on twitter but now it's been shot down by reporters (and Gronk's brother) as untrue. thankfully.

there's this anonymous reddit user who posted the Edelman suspension the night before it was reported by anyone else (so now everyone is looking to him for more stories), and he said he has another Patriots bomb that he will reveal tonight at 5PM. and then that spiraled into the gronk rumors from actual sports people on twitter. who knows if anything will actually come of this.

Percussion, you should get out of your bubble every once in a while.

Seeing how much you post in here, your way too detailed Westworld reviews, and your instantaneous responses to my posts have me wondering how much time you are spending here.

There is a whole big world out there. You should enjoy it. There is more to life than the internet. Get out there and do something. You deserve it.

I don't. I just notice that whenever I post something you respond.

And I was checking out the Westworld forum and saw it was basically you writing paragraph after paragraph so I got out of there because it looked like the ramblings of a mad man or a failed writer.

I haven't heard anyone saying that (except fans guessing) and I doubt they have interest in Dez unless his one-year-prove-it-deal is REALLY cheap but also the anonymous reddit guy specifically said the news he is going to drop at 5 is negative and involves a Pats player already signed to a multi-year deal.

Yeah by "people saying" I meant "fans speculating" more than I did anything concrete from insiders. I didn't see the reddit guy saying it was negative.

So, Fro, any guesses as a Pats fan? What's your worst fear since it apparently isn't Gronk being traded? Brady retiring?

I think Jerry Thornton was in fact referring to a Gronk trade, which has now been dubunked, so my guess is redditlover1981 was going to post the same thing and was basing it on similar rumblings. so my guess is it's now nothing. maybe Gronk really was in trade discussions but it didn't end up happening.

if it were to be something else, I can't see it being Edelman going anywhere because he is so vital and only on a 3.6 million cap hit. brady definitely isn't going anywhere so I wouldn't qualify that as a fear. although I guess the biggest fear would be Brady also getting popped for PEDs, because people surely would not give him the same indifference as they did the Peyton Manning HGH revelations.

I don't think Brady touches PEDs for the record, he has way too much to lose (not only in reputation but in his post-NFL business which is a health/fitness company and would basically be destroyed by a PED hit) and hardly anything to gain at this point. So I think he is clean, but that would be the biggest nightmare IMO.

Remember before Gronk when a lot of people thought Kellen Winslow Jr might be the next great tight end?

Ever wonder what he's up to now?

kellen winslow being a serial kidnapper/rapist is shocking. he targeted older women, reportedly. the two known rape victims were 59 and 54, and he also targeted a 71 and 86 year old.

    unreal.

Random thought, the Miami Hurricanes have produced some phenomenal NFL TEs.

Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow Jr, Greg Olsen, Jimmy Graham, and David Njoku (assuming he pans out) all drafted since 2000.

You could say much of the same about their production of safeties, running backs, defensive tackles, and line backers.

State of florida is sick with mobile talent.

Winston is reportedly suspended for the first three games of the season for his incident with an Driver last year.

I don't think so. He's definitely a shithead. And he hasn't lived up to number one overall pick expectations. But on a Buccs team that has been looking to continually put it's pieces together around him (still lacking a strong running game or sound pass protection) while he learns on the job I'd say that it's just a hair early to write him off given his improvements made each of his first three years.

I don't consider most draft picks to be busts until they have been released or traded away from their original teams. Some players have improved with their second team (i.e. Drew Brees), but the majority barely become starters on new teams, regulated to the bleachers, or leave the league altogether.

any thoughts on the NFL top 100 list as voted by NFL players? 40 year old wins #1 (for the second straight year). consensus best player in the league at his age, is this unprecedented in sports? Barry Bonds is the only comparison I can think of in terms of dominance at that age.

    1. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots

    2. Antonio Brown, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

    3. Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

    4. Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons

    5. Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers

    6. Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles Rams

    7. Aaron Donald, DT, Los Angeles Rams

    8. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

    9. Von Miller, LB, Denver Broncos

    10. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

I think I am good with the top 10 for the most part. I mean Rodgers might be a little high considering he only played 6 games.

Coming off an MVP season, while it isn't surprising, I certainly wouldn't it have been that surprised if he was anywhere in top 3.

Wentz does surprise me however. I would've put Julio and maybe Le'Veon over him.

Aaron Donald should be well higher.

For comparison sake here is the top 10 from Pro Football Focus' top 50 list..

    1. Aaron Donald
    2. Tom Brady
    3. Julio Jones
    4. Antonio Brown
    5. Luke Kuechly
    6. Rob Gronkowski
    7. Khalil Mack
    8. Von Miller
    9. Marshal Yanda
    10. Aaron Rodgers

Would much rather have players like Tyron Smith and Zack Martin (and Donald obviously) on my team than all of the non-QB offensive players on these lists so I would have linemen in the top 10 over them

A list like this, I believe, is more about who are the players standing out at what they do versus other players who are standing out at what they do. Like a positional pound for pound list.

And there's a real funk of offensive line play in the league at the moment. So even if Smith and Martin are debatably the best at their positions, and at positions that are more integral to success, it's not really saying quite as much in the current makeup of talent. Yanda does really stand out though.

wentz was the front runner for mvp before going down. if anyone should have been placed above him it should have been gurley.

I don't see how Rodgers is a top 10 player when he played in 6 games? How does that work?

I know the lists are based on player voting but how do they determine what player goes where? Like why is someone ranked 87 vs 76?

that's where it comes down to a question of criteria. Wentz had a good run of 13 games, got replaced by a backup who also did well and won the super bowl, and he's the 3rd best player in the league? I don't think anyone would take Wentz over Rodgers for the next 3 seasons. But Rodgers was hurt, and Wentz was better in 2017.

For comparison, when Matt Ryan had his MVP season in 2017, he snuck up to #10 on the list after being unranked the previous year. Wentz went all the way to #3 despite getting hurt late.

Ultimately the players can vote however they want and it's surely a combo of who was the best last year specifically, and who has been great over a longer period of time. The way it's framed, I believe, is who are the top players of 2018 which essentially means who WILL be the best going into this year, not who WAS the best last year.

It's also only a small collection of players who vote and they only select their top 20 each. So if more Eagles players voted than other teams, it's not unlikely they voted their QB as #1, awarding him more points.

Overall, I don't put too much stalk into this list. Its purpose is offseason entertainment more than anything, so I enjoy it for the highlights and don't really put any value into the number given to any player.

yea it just helps fill the gap before training camp begins. this year I didn't even realize it had started being revealed until I saw something on Twitter about Gronk not making the top 10. but it's fun, I mean the fact that it's voted by players makes it more meaningful since they are on the field together and watching film each week, as opposed to media voting or fan voting.

anyway there isn't much else going on in the NFL right now. Dez still unsigned (been hearing Titans thrown around). Janoris Jenkins' brother killed someone and left him in Janoris's basement. other than that, training camp starts in a month and then preseason shortly after that.

btw we have spots available in the rajah cash fantasy football league ($50 buy in) if anyone is interested.
