There's Hernandez to the Giants for their OL help. Really liking the Giants draft so far, sadly..

Sutton to the Broncos, seemed like Cowboys were high on him, I'm hoping to fill that LG spot but don't know who is left now. Can see a WR too obviously. Don't think Witten retirement changes anything but second round picks have been known to be wild.

Really wanted Denver to grab Guice. Had a sweet 1/1 printing plate pulled in a break and if Denver grabbed him it was mine

Still time to trade for Earl Thomas! Safety is the other choice I would say but once again no idea who is available

Fuck. Really hoping Bates would slip to 68 or we'd find a way to trade up for him if he just got close enough. Heck of a talent.

Tim Settle is the target now.

Everyone trying to mimic Drew Pearson is pretty weak

Michael Vick DID lose to Dallas!

Think it’s a great pick. If he can get back to where he was his Junior year he could be quite the stud.

Kerryon Johnson out of Auburn. We needed a running back and we got one I had heard of before. Detroit has sucked royally picking running backs since losing Barry Sanders. We're just like Miami drafting QBs since Marino retired.

Yes as a defender of our former coach Mularkey...I now love the shit out of Vrabel...or rather I love Jon Robinson even more now.

Loving the Packers draft so far. They have like 7 picks tomorrow too, so I expect them to turn some of those 5ths and 7ths into another one or two 4ths.

Percussion: Are you familiar with Oren Burks at all? People are saying he's like a raw version of Roquan Smith/Deion Jones/Kwon Alexander. Any accuracy to that? His combine numbers are impressive, but I'm not familiar w/ him at all outside of the stuff I've read after him getting drafted today.

Saw one of the pundits compare Hernandez to Braun Strowman. That tickled me.

Defensive lines are are gonna GET THESE HANDS.

    OL has been improved.

Also i hope Webb turns out to be something at some point so I don't have to relive the 90s QB experience. That was a tough time in my life.

There's accuracy to that in terms of his athleticism and measurables. Afraid the comparisons end there. Looks like just a guy to me though, as he's lacking any one solid contribution beyond being a pretty put together athlete. Not quick to diagnose, not aggressive downhill, doesn't get in the hip of a receiver in coverage, doesn't shed traffic ... and doesn't do any of these things terribly, so he'll have a place in the league I believe as a backup utility lb, but doesn't make plays in ways that demand he stay on the field.

    All in all..

3.68 - Justin Reid, S, Stanford - Ecstatic about this pick. Super talented combo safety who checks every single box. Fully expect him to be better than his brother.
3.80 - Martinas Rankin, OL, Miss St. - Really like the pick. Hope he can make it as a T, where we're in dire need, but may find his full potential inside. Excellent value either way.
3.98 - Jordan Akins, TE, UCF - More intrigued than happy here. His movement in space and ball skills could make for a solid future pairing with a mobile D Watson.
4.103 - Keke Coutee, WR, Texas Tech - Like the pick. Athletic, super productive slot with kick return value who can hopefully get coached up on pro routes and receiver nuance.
6.177 - Duke Ejiofor, Edge, WFU - Quite happy with this. Bit of a find late with potential to be a disruptive SAM despite lacking elite athleticism.
6.211 - Jordan Thomas, TE, Miss St. - Very meh here. Built like a titan, but not much production and is the epitome of raw. Maybe he can be molded, not holding my breath.
6.214 - Peter Kalambayi, LB, Stanford - Again, meh. Hopefully a special teams stud and solid backup.
7.222 - Jermaine Kelly, CB, SJSU - Haven't seen enough to judge this pick.

..two picks to really look forward to this season, three more that could contribute early and often. Projects and special teams the rest of the way. Hopefully hit on two, if not three, areas of need. Considering we didn't start until late on day 2 this is a draft I can be relatively happy about. And hopefully we never deal our 1st and 2nd in the same draft ever again.

He is a hall of famer for sure. Will he be the main analyst in the booth replacing Gruden? I'm not sure if they've announced that. They could also go to a 3-man team.

I fucking hate the Cowboys almost as much as I hate the Patriots. With that said, Jason Witten is a damn class act and is a first ballot. Hope he is good in the booth as Romo has shown to be.

    @JennyVrentas

As Troy Vincent said yesterday, the NFL plans to make changes to the kickoff for 2018—but not eliminate it. Special teams coaches around the league collaborated on a proposal to modify the play & make it safer by reducing some of the play’s space and speed.
Language of the proposed rule change is still being finalized before vote at May meetings but changes would include no running start for kicking team, no wedge & only three players deep.
Uhh, ok, trying to imagine this. So I guess team a kicks off and everyone just stands there and waits ... while a few guys are near the end zone from team b to receive the kick and return upfield ... while team b's guys just kind of mush/block into team a's guys from plotted points on the field? Or am I missing something entirely?

I mean, I'll reserve judgment until the wording is finalized and we see some version of the new proposal, but it doesn't sound too hot so far.

I am all for making the game safer. I love the NFL and want it to last so if this makes things safer then go for it. less exciting kickoffs won't change anything

I too don't really comprehend how this will affect the play from a strategic perspective. I think they're trying to make it more like a punt, yes? Meaning the blockers & tacklers will start closer together & not have a running start in order to limit the violent collisions where these guys are running directly at each other from opposite directions. Will that make it an advantage for the kicking team or the return team is what I'm not sure of. I guess we're all thinking it'll make it less exciting, meaning less kickoff return touchdowns, but I really don't know.

Either way I'm sure Bill Belichick will dig deep into the minutia of the new rules in order to exploit them however possible

Great point (and bummer) about onside kicks with no running start.

I would understand the no running starts for the return team but for the kicking team it seems odd.

They want it to play more like a punt plays. The return team will not be blocking with big collisions as much as they will be running along side the coverage team trying to shield the runner.

Someone suggested (I forget who) that if kickoffs are eliminated entirely, the way you would replace an onside kick would be with a 4th and 10 play from the same spot of the kickoff. I like this idea, and if the running start rule change means onside kicks become almost impossible then I honestly wouldn't mind them instituting this even when kickoffs are still happening. Onside kicks are classic in that they've been a big part of close games forever, but are they really that cool? I think a 4th and 10 would possibly be more fun.

I'd prefer onside kicks. Maybe that's just bias towards what I know, but there's a natural flow of the game with the way an onside kick comes about.

I admit, maybe a 4th and 10 reset kind of play could be fun, idk, but just hearing it right now it sounds a little jarring to the run of play.

And I like onside kicks out of nowhere. Pay attention special teams.

Wouldn't it much easier to convert that play than an onside kick though? Don't think it would be fair to the team who is winning to be honest. Eliminate kickoffs is fine but when a team wants to onside kick it, they can announce it before the kick but I don't think they should eliminate kickoffs altogether either way.

This. It basically changed the super bowl between the Saints and Colts.

Yea I may be remembering the suggestion incorrectly. Maybe it was 4th and 15, or 4th and 20. You could look at 4th down conversion %'s and set the distance accordingly to more-or-less match the conversion rate of onside kicks.

I don't want them to eliminate kickoffs either but I would be okay with this an an alternate solution to onside kicks.

Was thinking of hosting a best of, list-y, countdown-y thing. Wanted to put a feeler out first though and see if enough, or anyone for that matter, would be interested. With free agency and the draft in the rearview not much left but down time before opening weekend.

Initially thought best qbs of all time would be the front and center interest getter, but the subject doesn't matter as much as enough people participating and having fun putting their opinions out there and talking football.

So, all that said, anyone game?
    Best QBs of all-time?
    Best RBs?
    Best Defensive players?
    Any other ideas/suggestions?
    Couldn't give a rip?

I think those kind of lists can absolutely be interesting. But I think they are more so when done by a single person or cohesive team instead of by group vote/tally. There's subjectivity to any kind of best of or greatest list, but in those you can mostly point to stats and accomplishments to validate an opinion. Over/under-rated opens all kinds of doors to what even qualifies as 'rated' to begin with, and at that point you're just trying to establish a baseline and haven't even begun to compile actual suggestions.

Not trying to dump on any idea, as I'm all ears for what will gain participation, just think off the bat that one's kind of a tough road to hoe.

breaking it down into subsets like positions seems like a safe bet for good interaction. i think doing something like 'greatest football player of all time' could spark some interesting debate and discussion on the sport as a whole thanks to comparisons between positions. but it's also not as focused and i could see some people not wading in cause of that.

doing a poll of best players in a certain teams history would be a lot of fun, but is maybe too concentrated. i'd love a 'greatest philadelphia eagle' poll, but is it going to garner that much interaction outside of me and pureplayer?

greatest single season(ever or per position).

greatest play of all time. all encompassing or broken down by offense, defense and special teams.

    top super bowl moments.

best rivalries ever(teams, players or coaches).

best offenses and/or defenses of all time.

    greatest coaches.

Think some of these make for great conversation - best play of all time, best moment, over/under-rated, etc. But for a tallied list to have a rewarding result it should probably be something a little more narrow as to contain answers that form some arrow of consensus - best wr, best qb, best coach, even a bit broader like best defensive player.

The latter there I kind of prefer as listing any subset of defensive positions could get a little thin answer-wise, but tallying guys all together like Ronnie Lott, Deacon Jones, Lawrence Taylor, Champ Baily, etc. could be both deep and wide for list and convo sake. Also a generally familiar ask for most anyone here wanting to participate.

Breaking it down into position like Morrison said could be cool. We could make an All-Rajah team, identifying who we collectively think is the best ever at each position.

If we want to get real dicy, we could even do it twice: current players, and retired players. Basically a collection of active perennial all pros and a collection of HOFers. Then we can have one final vote to see which team we think is better.

I'm in, obviously, but I would suggest keeping it simple to get the most involvement. We're probably only looking at about 10 people who would vote.

    Best QB
    Best WR
    Best RB
    Best defensive player
    Best Super Bowl

I would do these 5, and have people submit their top 10 list for each.

Lets put it to a vote.

We'll start with one countdown and if it tidies up quickly enough before minicamp etc then we'll perhaps proceed to one or another more. Yes?

We'll narrow the choices to the ones Fro suggested above as they make the most general fan friendly sense. Most votes in the next couple of days is what we go with first.

So begin voting now for which best of countdown you'd like to participate in.

Please take into account the winning selection will be asked to procure a top 20 of that list as to get a nice meaty reveal.

And so, what would yous guys like,

    Best QB
    Best WR
    Best RB
    Best Defensive Player
    Best Super Bowl
    ?

I'd participate in a greatest player on a team, doesn't matter the team, I'd argue more passionately for Chicago, but lots of other teams I'm a fan of and many players I like from them.

Yeah I know people were already talking about it but I figured maybe somebody would want to see the rules in an illustrated version.

Browns will be the featured team on Hard Knocks.

Makes sense. Tons of young talent and personality to go around.

Agreed. Excited to watch that team this year. As weird as that feels to say.

I think it's an underwhelming choice of team for the show. I would have picked the 49ers then maybe Broncos or Ravens. The eligible teams were:

    » 49ers
    » Broncos
    » Browns
    » Chargers
    » Ravens
    » Redskins

49ers would have been interesting. They don't have Baker though

Jimmy G - the next big QB star of the league. Richard Sherman - always interesting especially now that he was spurned by his old team and signed with a division rival and negotiated his own contract. Kyle Shanahan - young stud head coach. They are also everyone's darkhorse team (making them not really a darkhorse at all). Expectations are very high.

They are a relevant team with a lot of buzz unlike the Browns.

I don't care anyway, I don't watch Hard Knocks that much regardless but just my 2 cents.

I personally think seeing a team that was 0-16 coming in revamped with new players and the number 1 pick is far and away more interesting.

On another note, the 49ers have become one of my most hated teams this year. They haven't done jack shit in 5 years and now have a qb that went 5-0 and hasn't proven anything yet and people are saying they will win the west. It is just a bunch of hot takes to make someone sound smarter than the rest. They are an 8-8 team in my opinion. They have no offensive firepower. Their receivers are average, their running backs are average, and their secondary stinks.

Aaron Donald not attending OTA's in LA. Had no idea he was just coming up on the 5th-year option of his rookie deal.

Gotta agree with Marcus Peters - 'Pay the man'

They will need to find room to pay him. Their salary cap is pretty full this year so they might need to wait, franchise tag him next offseason, then negotiate. It's not an ideal strategy but they are "all-in" on this season. Or maybe they can cut some guys to free up $6 million or so in order to sign him now, idk.

So you hate the team because of what people outside the team are predicting them to do this year?

Yes. Just like how there are people here that hate teams because of their fans or because a team wins or for any other reason.

New policy requires on-field players, personnel to stand for anthem

So you can choose to stay in the locker room, but if you're on the field during the anthem you gotta stand.

Why is the NFL the only sport that has this issue? Aren't players on the court, ice, and field during the anthem?

Seems like social media was pissed when players were protesting. Now this rule comes out and all you see is outrage.
