I work in Shoreditch right near Boxpark and it was such a shit show as the night went on. And yes beer is pricey round here so chucking it away in what seems like a very deliberate show of excitement is a funny one.

Anyway, this should look pretty ridiculous if/when England score; https://www.bst-hydepark.com/events/...tia-v-england/
I’ve applied for the bst showing. 30000 people and the lightning seeds before the match. Should be incredible.

Interesting sub-plot to England/Croatia - following the victory against Russia, defender Vida and coach Vukojevic posted a video on social media stating ‘Glory to Ukraine’ and ‘this victory was for Dynamo and Ukraine’ (Vida & Vukojevic are former Dynamo Kyiv players). It has been seen as an indirect response to the illegal invasion and occupation of Ukraine by Russia and Russian-backed forces.
Vida received a fine while Vukojevic lost his job, and hundreds of thousands of people have given FIFA a 1-star rating on facebook in protest.
Russia Today’s Facebook feed responded by stating that England will suddenly gain thousands of supporters for the semi-final (despite the political fallout over the Novichok scandal).

England/Croatia could be a spicy match indeed...

It's been a great World Cup passing without incident, then something idiotic like that had to happen. They just couldn't be humble and keep their traps shut. Ugh.

About tonight's match, really close but great defensive performance by France. Pavard had an outstanding one and Lloris made a few oitstanding saves. Whoever gets through, France will be tough to break down for whoever gets through. Mbappe was great again save giving away a needless yellow card at the end.

Have one to steady yourself at lunch. Not sure any earlier will get you to the match.

The UK press obsession with Deli Alli's mum is ridiculous. Leave the lad alone. Stop shoving photos of his boozy mum up on every website.

They're so fucking desperate I saw an article where they tracked down someone that Southgate's wife used to date before him, like 10+ years ago, as if it held any relevance. Surely the most relevant angle, if you were to explore one of that stupid nature, would be to look at Southgate's girlfriend prior to his wife, given he's the one managing England?

It's news for the sake of news which then turns out not to be actual news.

Only England. We are bloody mental.

Guys, we lost to Iceland two years ago. We sacked the replacement after one game for being a sleazeball. The man who replaced him was seen by all as incredibly underwhelming. We got through qualifying playing meh football.

Then we changed formation, realised Southgate wasn't kidding about with dropping the old guard and accepted that a QF place would be a very good WC and we'll just enjoy it no matter what.

Now we're in the semis and people have gone straight back to clutching hearts, praying to God, tense as fuck, shouting at the big screen, reactionary silliness.

    Gotta love this country.

I really don't want to be at work today. Finish at 5. Got a change of clothes here. Stopping off at the shops for burgers and beers. Should get to my mate's house for about 5.45ish. Very much having a beer or a whiskey on arrival. Quick bbq and then I'm going to shit myself.

Pint on lunch in an hour. Finish at 4:30pm. No work until then. Few cans around Waterloo. Area of a pub booked out for 6pm onwards. Football coming home.

    I wouldn't spill a bloody drop.

Because the house I'm going to has whiskey all over it, I'm chancing nothing and will get pissy Foster's for the match. Or similar.

I honestly think quite a few folk would have a soft spot for them around our age, I just think of the success and brilliance of their 98 squad has stuck as for me. For a few of us that would be the first WC we properly remember as well.

The thing that has impressed me most avout Croatia this tournament is their knack for responding quickly and how they respond. Iceland knocked them off their stride equalising, they went on to win at the last minute. Denmark got an early goal which would have shell-shocked most teams but they equalised very quickly. Russia took the lead but they equalised quicky. Russia's extra-time leveller could have broken most teams but they held their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out especially in front of the hosts crowd.

    They have bottle.

Mine is a snide one. Bless my mum, she knows I love football kits but she simply will not understand that a snide football shirt from her holiday destination is worse than no shirt at all. I've got so many shirts with no indentation, where the badge and sponsor are just part of the stitching. Shouldn't complain really but here we are. I've got a snide Palermo shirt with the player's name spelled wrong too

On the way to the pub, travelling down the Stratford Road into town, a road which is a byword for gridlocked chaos in the area.

It’s like a Brummie opening to 28 Days Later, and there’s an hour to go.

This game is so frenetic, love it! Croatia's knack for coming back has happened again though slightly helped by England not finishing the job earlier.

Imagine if they actually came up against a good team at this World Cup? With those dough balls in defence and that shite keeper. Croatia are saving them from embarrassing themselves in the final.

England got a good young squad, best I've seen in a while. If they held their bottle a bit it would've gone their way. Croatia's experience and staying power saw them through.

Saying that, France should win this. They play well as a unit at both ends of the pitch where even Griezmann rushes back to defend and Lloris is a tremendous keeper.

Just waiting for "stop crying your heart out" now.

Lovely stuff. Good effort, just a reminder that England technically only won one of their last 4 games. Just for perspective.

Though it would've also been amusing if Theresa May dropped the boycott if England got there.

Right team won in the end but I havent felt like this about the England side in years. This summer will be memorable in a way we havent seen since 1996.

Hope Croatia win it now. Modric.

I saw grown men collapse into weeping wrecks last night and it felt really fucking weird. I'm not talking tight throat or a solitary tear, I'm talking shoulders shaking, involuntary sobs, child has just died level of break down.

Also, the pub was full of people who hadn't bothered showing up for all the other games (watching in the lesbian bar in Brum) and they were fucking clueless, almost to a person in full kit fancy dress. I actually lost my rag when they started to cheer Sterling being subbed.

And if nobody else is keeping to fucking tradition, I will. I've made a start on my John Stones effigy and will be burning it at 6pm on Saturday. It's already more mobile to headers over its shoulder.

I got literally zero enjoyment from last night from about the 20th minute to the final whistle. Going out felt like sweet relief compared to the tension of the previous 90 minutes or so, and I'm not even joking about that. I don't think I've ever felt like that before, where a game became so stressful as to be impossible to enjoy.

EDIT: I cried very slightly when we won the shootout. I felt like Stuart Pearce in '96, like somehow it was me getting the monkey off my back rather than some men I've never met putting to bed the failures of some other, older men I've never met.

Fair do's to Modric getting it right up your arrogant media who have played a role in your downfall again. It must be part of any of your opponent's preparations to watch videos of insufferable twats like Ian Wright talking about them like they're a foregone conclusion.

Are you going to support France in the final or are you going to want them to lose because you don't like them winning at sport. Maybe you want Forrest to win to win the championship next year as well?

I want Celtic to be shite in everything, I want every other team apart from Scotland to be shite as well but particularly England, Wales, Ireland and N.Ireland. I dont hate them, I dont hate anyone from that country, I just dont like "rivals" to win.

The fact England will never have a better chance to win the WC in my life time and haven't makes the defeat a whole lot sweeter.

Where is this idea that the media were treating this game as a foregone conclusion come from? Genuine question because I didn't see any of that. Presumably the tabloids? The general media consensus from my vantage point was that this was an incredibly tough game that England were marginal outsiders for, but were capable of winning.

Have you watched any of the build up for the last 4 days? Constant talk of the final before they had even kicked a ball, it's coming home, ect. I get that most normal folk are having a laugh but the media circus picks up on it and it all becomes perceived as arrogance from everyone outside that bubble.

The only ones who have stayed humble and respectful are Southgate and the team.

I've never had it in for England like most up here but the media coverage and commentary that we are subjected to is absolutely brutal year upon year and is a reason for us to go independent in itself. It was worth you losing just to see hear Tydesley, Hoddle and the rest cry.

I'm probably in my own little bubble nowadays, getting most of my news from the Guardian website and a Twitter feed that is mostly free of tabloid bollocks. So it's mostly the football media intelligensia who are more interested in 1,500 word pieces about how Perisic's average position is going to prevent Trippier from giving the overlap that frees Sterling than shouty bollocks about how it's coming home because of England's greater racial purity. The only real involvement I have with tabloid football coverage is keeping up to date with whatever hilarious way the service industry is humiliating Neil Custis this week.

I honestly think I was most happy at Hoddle's disappointment, slabbering and drooling over every single thing England did vs very little praise for anything from the Croatians..

His commentary is a perfect example of the English media being massive wallopers during major tournaments.

The fact ITV see it fit to give him a job after being outed as a nutcase is quite frankly appalling.

I've definitely seen this in the past, the borderline racist headlines on The Sun etc, but I genuinely haven't seen much of that this year, all the coverage I've seen since the tournament started, bar a couple of shitty attempts to rake up dirt about Dele Alli's mum, has seemed fairly level-headed. Certainly still pro-England, but not in an over-the-top way or a way that particularly denigrated the opposition - prior to the Croatia game the closest I saw to anything dismissive of them was that we would hopefully be fitter than them as they'd played extra tme twice. Which turned out not to be true as they dominated us from the 20th minute onwards, but it was a reasonable shout.

Like I said though I'm fairly well insulated from that sort of bollocks nowadays so it might well still be as bad as ever.

As it happens I hope Croatia win but it has nothing to do with anti France sentiment its simply that I have a soft spot for them as my 2 fave Derby players in the 90s were Stimac and Asanovic, Quality.

I think there's some sort of loophole that if all players from a team leave the pitch, play can start up. It was explained in the spain/Portugal match, but I didn't pay much attention.

    What was stupid about it?

His arm moved out wide of his body and deflected the ball from it's path. Not necessarily intentional but the movement and effect were enough.

I don't think it HAS to be deemed deliberate, Rather whether a players arm moves/is in a unnatural position.

His hand was coming down because he was coming down from the jump plus it's doubtful he even saw the ball. Also the ref had to check it about three times. When there's that. When there's that much doubt, it really shouldn't be given IMO.

Tough result on Croatia today though, they were much better. France had two decisions in the first half (the free kick one too) luckily go their way.

He absolutely moves his arm/hand into the path of the ball as it's moving in flight as his eyes track it.

Never a penalty, nor a free kick for the first which was also offside. Bad game for the officials. Croatia were hard done by, but their keeper was fucking useless for the 3rd and 4th goals. Pogba's especially should be saved by a child.

Goal of the tournament then? I'd make a poll but blah blah blah..

I'd also post vids for worthy candidates here, but can't use more than one per post all of a sudden, so.

FIFA though have a pretty handy site for looking over a number of options ... GOAL OF THE TOURNAMENT

Gotta give it to Chadli's finish off the ridiculous Belgian break to come back against Japan. The whole piece and the situation were altogether utterly remarkable.

The problem with VAR in the final was the same as in France's opening game - just don't overturn the original decision if it's that hard to see if it's a penalty or not. He went to make the decision then ran back for another look

Tough result on Croatia today though, they were much better. France had two decisions in the first half (the free kick one too) luckily go their way.
Interesting how the hand near the ball acted very different than his other hand nowhere near the ball…I have zero issues with that penalty given.

Nacho vs Portugal or Messi vs Nigeria for me. Nacho's was a thing of impossible beauty, but I think Messi's is probably the best technical goal - the pass from Banega was every bit as handsome as the Nacho/Pavard goals, and then Messi has two perfect touches where anything else would have meant the chance was gone. And then the finish was nice too.

As for individual efforts I'd lean toward Pavard or Messi. Pavard/Nacho's were near carbon copies, but I thought the bounce Pavard dealt with was perhaps a hair trickier. Both spectacular though. And what else is to say about Messi's control with those touches. It's impossible to convince friends of mine who don't watch/care for the game how difficult what he did there is. It's an odd catch-22 how simple he makes things look.
