Been catching up on some flicks lately so figured I'd throw 'em all in one thread. Disclaimer, though: if you want to review a new or popular movie, create a new thread for it instead.

War Dogs - Really enjoyed this. Jonah Hill and the other guy were both great as the leads and the plot had me interested throughout. The music was great too, it reminded me of a Scorsese movie with the soundtrack (although this had more hip hop than any Scorsese movie) and the narrative voiceovers from the main characters. I was surprised to see it was a Todd Phillips joint (didn't know until the credits). Felt like he fell off with the awful Hangover sequels (although don't think he directed those) so it was nice to see him back doing great things. He's lowkey one of my favorite directors of this century. 8/10

John Wick - This was fine but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped based on the good reception it got. I love Taken so I can enjoy a good revenge flick that doesn't take itself too seriously but this was too devoid of plot and character development. I never got to caring about or particularly liking John Wick. It bored me despite the bad-ass killings. 6/10

Birdman - Finally saw this and loved it. Glad it won best picture. Not to say it was the best movie of the year but I want more movies like this to win that award. Well crafted all around. 9/10

The Founder - Got my fix of Keaton with this and Birdman and I'm loving his resurgence. This is the McDonald's origin movie and it was solid. Loved the casting of the McDonalds brothers (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch), felt bad for them in the end. 7/10

Baby Driver

This was okay. I thought it would have been better based on the great reviews (93% RT) and word of mouth. It was fun, the music was great, but it was too over the top- Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx's characters in particular. I wish it stayed more grounded and realistic instead of going for the insane thrills like having a character be a serial murderer and another one being Terminator-level unkillable.

This movie got bad reviews (39% on RT) but it was actually pretty damn funny. Thumbs up, recommended for a lazy evening when you want a silly comedy. Cranston and Franco (and Megan Mullally) are all on their game. 6.5/10

Haven't seen Last King of Scotland but I don't think Blood Diamond was an award-worthy performance so no qualms there.

Haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club but Wolf of Wall Street was borderline-award-worthy. I love that movie and his performance is tremendous but it's not your typical Best Actor type role. No qualms there either.

I fucking love his performance in The Aviator and it would have gotten my vote but it's hard to not give it to Jamie Foxx in Ray. Oh well.

I just watched Colossal. I loved the first half of the movie. Anne Hathaway's charcter's life falls apart and she is an alcoholic and then is tied to this monster in Korea and it is a pretty good metaphor and all that. Then halfway through the monster plot is resolved and Jason Sudekis' character, who was super low key kinda a creep in the first part, because the husband from every Lifetime movie. It goes from a neat twist on a kaiju movie to Sleeping With the Enemy. I did not like the second half of this movie at all.

I enjoyed 1922, I'd give it a 7/10. Also saw the Ritual, which I'd give 8/10, both Netflix originals.

loved this. really well written story of a fucked up family. Hoffman was great as the asshole father, and Sandler/Stiller were both on top of their games. it hit close to home in a lot of moments.

Paterno

I thought this was very well done and probably Al Pacino's best role of the last 10 years (not a high bar... I'm trying to remember any other good ones). He was great as Joe Pa. I'm not too familiar with Joe Pa speaking or his mannerisms so I'm not sure how close it was to the real thing but I found it to be a very subdued yet meticulous performance where he sad a lot with just his facial expressions and tone of voice.

It's a very sad story and they did well laying out how it came to a head and how the Penn State leadership including Paterno turned a blind eye to it.

Now that this thread got bumped, I can throw a few quick thoguhts on some of my recent watchings:

mother! - Was a bit unsure how I felt when it ended but the more I thought about it, the more I kind of loved it. I don't want to say much else in case others haven't seen it but I can see how it's a love it or hate it flick.

Justice League - Was surprisingly ok. I didn't see BvS so I didn't see murdering Batman and they retconned Supes into being more the Supes he should be (I have seen Man of Steel). Wonder Woman is fucking terrific, Aquaman is a sexy beast, and Flash was fun. Cyborg looked kind of shit but at least was central to their success. Plot was crap, villain was crap, and most of it looked like a video game cutscene. Seeing it after Infinity War, it felt like that knockoff version of the blockbuster that's always put straight to DVD only a notch better, it felt a lot like a subpar Infinity War (funnily enough, a friend of mine made the same comparison in reverse). But I liked the team itself and would watch more of their stuff. I'm stoked for Aquaman's solo film, I fucking loved Wonder Woman.

I also recently rewatched Bram Stoker's Dracula and also saw Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre for the first time. Felt similarly about both in that they definitely had some style and some things about them that were cool and creepy as hell and also some stuff that was a bit disappointing or boring.

Oh, i also watched Jason X to finally complete seeing all the Friday the 13th movies. It was total garbage top to bottom.

Man I fucking love Jason X. Granted I haven't seen in in about 15 years but loved the experience of seeing it in the theater.

One movie that I was very disappointed in was Insidious: The Last Key. It had minimal scares, a lot less than I remember from the previous entries. It felt like a character study of Lynn Shaye's character more than anything. I hope that the series is over cause that film shouldn't have been made.

I have that on my Netflix queue. I have Flatliners (2017) next, then after that Happy Death Day will arrive. I wanted to see that when it was in theaters but a wedding happened.

Ocean’s Eight.

I went in with low expectations, but this was fun. It’s just light and breezy and slick. There are absolutely no stakes or any real jeopardy. It felt like they succeeded where Ghostbusters failed, in terms of not hitting us over the head with the gender swap or having constant references to the previous film. I’d happily watch this cast again in a sequel which has a more complex plot or occasions where things don’t go as expected for the characters.

I watched Game Night fairly recently. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Thought it was going to be alright, like the previews really captured the best parts of the movie into little pieces to lure you in. Kyle Chandler is awesome, the story, the cast was perfect for this. Obviously a lot of farfetched stuff happens throughout the movie but shut that part of your brain off for 100 minutes. 8/10

Tag was really fun. Hannibal Buress was the stand out for me. The fact that it's based on a true story makes this even more insane. Ending was out of left field, but it was enjoyable overall for what I was expecting! Jeremy Renner was really funny as well. 7/10

Anyone seen The Killing of a Sacred Deer? I did, it was interesting but reminded me of We Need To Talk About Kevin, but a lesser version of it. Teenager manipulates people, chaos happens, somebody tries to intervene to hold family together. I saw it because I usually like Colin Farrell movies, so it didn't disappoint.

If you like that you should absolutely Yorgos Lanthimos' last film The Lobster. Same kind of out of there kind of story with Colin Farrell as well and the same kind of oddball earnest characters that keep you kind of guessing as to what kind of world he's really painting. I loved Hereditary. It was a good horror flick that was tense with a fantastic final 25 minutes. There was a little lag after the first half hour that went about 10 minutes too long. Overall it was a very good horror movie that kept me on the edge of my seat

ND, AMAP... I think you'll both like the movie. Saw it a week or two back. Was reluctant to but got it so I could shut my brain off for a couple hours. It was a fun movie, seemed like Bruce of the 80s and 90s that made him popular could make a comeback being in major release movies like this. My personal favorite with Bruce was Hostage which I still enjoy to this day.

Father Figure was an absolute pile of steaming garbage. Not remotely good and I struggle to find any redeeming quality in it. Actually, that’s not true. It showed me how much I don’t like Ed Helms. Not funny, not endearing, not cute. Just terrible. -1/10.

I watched 2 movies this weekend:

1st up was "Josie" I won't lie, the only reason I rented it is because Sophie Turner is fucking beautiful. Would I buy it? If it were under $10 sure but it was a god Redbox rental. 2nd movie I watched was the new Batman "Gotham by Gaslight" Very much a mature Batman animated movie. Pretty good and I liked the concept of putting Gotham in the 1800's incorporating Jack the Ripper so to speak.

I finally saw A Quiet Place.

What a good fucking movie. Not just a good scarry movie. A damn good film all around. Forcing a bunch of actors to act with their faces and bodies instead of their mouths. That shit must have been challenging.

I enjoyed Ant Man and the Wasp far more than I expected. Free movie tickets, free popcorn and free drink courtesy of my coupons, and luxury seating helped a lot.

Den of Thieves was fantastic. Great jobs by everybody, but O’Shea Jackson Jr and Pablo Schreiber were by far the best, with Schreiber being the standout. Very engrossing. Can’t recommend it enough. And I didn’t know that Pablo is Liev’s brother. I hope he ends up with more roles moving forward.

Loved the twist at the end that Jackson Jr was actually the ringleader the whole time. Didn’t see it coming though I did suspect something was up with him. Figured he was a cop or something.

Saw Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom yesterday. Some of it was a little weird, but I loved the way the film was shot and I thought it had some pretty good jump scares in it.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Some of the shots and set pieces in this were flat out brilliant. This felt like a hybrid of a Bourne and Fast and Furious film. It felt like it got a tad slower for me in the third act but that's probably just because the first acts felt breakneck to me. All in all, a really entertaining film.

Good. Cena was great. But you know what? I didn't want a movie about three parents scared their children are growing up. I wanted a female Superbad and I didn't get it.

The Disaster Artist
I thought this was great. I've only seen The Room once so I'm no expert but I thought Franco did a great job with the accent and just overall with his performance. He is a talented dude. It was very funny and genuine. Dave Franco was good too.

Game Night
This was exactly what I expected based on the positive reviews. Fun comedy romp with a good cast. Rachel McAdams is still on her game. She was a total babe in this. And I love Winston from New Girl getting some shine on the big screen.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
This is a movie I thought would be awful based on the trailer but then it got good reception and killed it at the box office. I can see why. It wasn't anything amazing but it was funny and enjoyable throughout. The body switching comedy all played really well with Jack Black stealing the show and Kevin Hart not far behind (IMO).

Fro, if you read much the Disaster Artist is what got me interested in the movie later. Even seeing the movie still a good read to go back to. It's just insane seeing all the stuff written about come to life.

Movies I've seen recently, the past week:

I Can Only Imagine. Didn't know a thing about this other than what the Netflix sleeve had printed out. Enjoyed it. Not big on religion or Christian music, but a very good story about the singer, his relationship with his father, the popularity of the band. 7.5/10

Rampage - 7/10. A fun "shut off your brain" action-adventure movie. I got what I expected out of it. A good pace, most things Dwayne "The Rock" is in I seem to like, this one not much different.

Super Troopers 2 - 7/10, or slightly higher. Exceeded my expectations from the many negative reviews I saw. I laughed hard at a lot of stuff throughout the movie. It was worth the time and curiosity, though initially having doubts about it. It's no original, but it's a damn good long overdue sequel.

Anyone watch Upgrade yet? I fucking loved it.

For someone who doesn't like musicals, I adored The Greatest Showman. It gave me the feels and was just lovely, lovely, lovely.

I also liked Moulin Rouge, thinking about it, so maybe I do actually like musicals.

Patriot’s Day. I liked it. I thought it was very well done. Worth watching. A bit overly dramatic in some parts but not terribly so. Tugged on the heartstrings in just the right ways in how some of the stories of the victims were portrayed. The I didn’t know Peter Berg directed it until my wife told me afterwards. I really like Berg as a director.

I really like Berg as a director.

I also recently saw this. It was good. As you said, definitely a tear-jerker. Especially as someone who was in Boston when this all went down. Building up the MIT cop as a character when you know what was going to happen to him, that was tough.

They seem to have done a good job accurately portraying how it all went down, even though the Mark Wahlberg character was fictionalized. I can see why they needed to do that, I mean it's good to have a protagonist. I thought they portrayed the bombers well, I mean who knows how they really interacted with each other but the way they wrote them seemed about right based on what we know.

The dialogue wasn't the best - it was pretty generic in terms of the police and FBI jargon used. That's probably what keeps this from being a truly great real crime movie (compared to say, Zero Dark Thirty).

The documentary part at the end - even though these people definitely deserve their shine, it felt a little too much, maybe a little cheesy at times. Idk, it was good it just felt tacked on, like it shouldn't be at the end of this movie but rather part of its own documentary but because this was a real very recent terrorist attack they needed to add it on to be respectful. I think that's the fine line they walked when making this movie SO SOON after this happened.

I'm seeing the Nun in 50 minutes and I haven't been this excited for a movie since I don't know when.

I rented Hereditary tonight. I've been watching horror movies since I was a kid and there are some that will creep me out or get me with a jump scare but most don't have much of an effect on me. So with that being said Hereditary is one of those movies I think either you'll love or hate, there's not a lot of jump scares and most of the movie is focused on emotion and tragedy and... this movie scared the living shit out of me. Toni Collette is brilliant and the actress that plays her daughter is creepy as hell. The best comparison I can make is if you took The Shining and The Exorcist, mixed them together and modernized them then you'd have Hereditary. There's a lot of "Hey, what was that noise? Oh I guess were supposed to just look at this person's face... wait is that a person in the corner? Oh fuck there's a person in the corner!" Towards the end of the movie I was sitting on my couch in the fetal position with tears coming down my eyes and shaking. There was a scene that actually made me scream out loud, which for the record is the first time I've ever done that when watching a movie on TV. And after it was over I had to turn on every light because it stays with you.

Again, you will either love it or hate it and say "Hardly anyone was murdered and nobody was chased with a knife, boring". Oh and the ending ties into one of the more talked about topics in America right now (not Trump).

Hereditary was decent. It took a solid hour to get going though and that never works for me in a horror film. The performances were great and so was the direction but the story was blah. Ripped right out of a Paranormal Activity movie.

That being said once things kick into gear (about 20 minutes before the movie ends) it gets pretty damn good.

Last Flag Flying. Anybody else seen it? Watched it last night. Loved it. I came back to it after seeing a preview of it with "You Were Never Really Here", will review below. Didn't know much about it or the story, never even saw previews for it but I liked the cast. I like Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne. Pretty well done, I was surprised by how much about the movie that I laughed about. Good drama-comedy type story of three friends from Vietnam getting reunited and one of t hem trying to get his son's body back from Afghanistan. The movie has been out for awhile, but running into the preview really got me watching it sooner than I would have. 8/10

You Were Never Really Here. I admit not reading much about this so I had no clue what the story was, why what was going on at the start was happening but it eventually made sense. Seemed like a lightweight version of Drive. Joaquin Phoenix tracks down missing girls. There isn't a ton of dialogue throughout the movie but digesting it a little, the pacing was fine, story develops and there's occasional flashbacks on things. If you think Drive was a 10/10 you'll probably hate this movie. Very dark, gritty movie and I think I'll have to watch it a second time to really appreciate it. Not a lot of characters to pay attention to to understand the connection to anyone, only really like five people of importance and shown with any kind of regularity throughout. 7/10.

The Shallows - terrible. 1/10, and that's being kind. At some point I started rooting for the shark.

Baby Driver - Very enjoyable. 7/10. I'm assuming I'm like most people who thought it was cool how the music was kind of like a character in the movie. The opening car chase scene was one of the best chases I've seen in a long time so it started off quick, then slowed down a little, and then got going again. Good performances from all involved. I didn't dislike Jon Hamm in this so that's saying something. I would recommend it to those who haven't seen it.

Logan was excellent. Quite sad to see Jackman leave the roll though.

Deadpool 2 didn't enjoy, Ryan Reynolds is just...I don't like him. I did like Cable and Domino though.

The Strangers 2...not as good as the first but not a bad film by any means.

Not really a REVIEW as much as a "wonder".

So Kevin Hart's new movie Night School dropped and debuted at #1. I'll be honest, up until Friday I had no clue he even had a new movie coming out but I don't watch much t.v. or anything and don't really pay attention to his social media even though I follow him.

But what I'm curious about is Amy Schumer posted a screen shot that Night School was #1 in theaters and she said "White Male Critics what happened?"

Was this a movie that was racially profiled in a negative way or something? Just an odd statement for the average person but she's not exactly average.

I saw the My Hero Academia movie over the weekend. It was the only theater in my region showing the movie. It was a lot of fun to watch with a crowd. Essentially Die Hard with teenage superheroes.

Bad Times at the El Royale was really good. Felt like a Tarantino movie.
