When they announced the Oscar nominations, I was a bit perplexed that Tom Hanks was nominated for Best SUPPORTING Actor, I was like I thought the movie was about Mr. Rogers.

I mean going in I was like holy shit this might be the first movie geared toward adults that doesn't have a bunch of negative bullshit. And while this movie does have that, it works for what they're trying to convey. It was beautiful.

I will say this, I was watching it thinking that a lot of people are probably like the main character Lloyd thinking Fred Rogers was full of shit and probably some creepy dude behind the scenes. It's sad that we don't have more people like Mister Rogers leading the charge and instead we have the fucking Kardashians and youtubers....................

    Outbreak

I watched this on Netflix due to current events. I don't believe I had ever seen it before. It was solid. I prefer a movie like Contagion which, to my recollection, was a bit more grounded in reality. Outbreak on the other hand looped in this outlandish plot involving the US government building a biological weapon and then wanting to blow up an entire town rather than giving them the vaccine because of BIG BAD MILITARY CONSPIRACIES (embodied by Donald Sutherland's character). It also seemed far fetched that they had to capture this one single monkey who had the cure in him, or something. Due to these reasons, I don't think this movie has aged all that well. Otherwise, the cast is pretty good.

We watched 'The Lighthouse' last night. What a trip. Very very good.

    Planning to watch 'Parasite' tonight.

    Shockingly very good.

I watched the newest Jumanji on Saturday. It was ok. I never really cared for the 90's version with Robin Williams. Part 2 was nice, I love the 4 main actors so that was solid. Part 3...I don't know, Rock doing a horrid Danny Devito accent really took me out of the movie. I mean it wasn't even funny, he sounded like he was talking like a baby from New York lol.

'Parasite' was good. Interesting story, well done. Don't think it was better than 'The Lighthouse', though.

The Invisible Man was pretty good. Missed it at the theater but got it over the weekend. I think the experience would have been more entertaining in the theater but oh well. Solid acting by Moss. Pretty good swerve in the final stretch. The go-home sequence was clearly a homage (or rip-off) of Gone Girl.

It's always odd those things. Brad Pitt won for best supporting actor for Once Upon a Time but I wouldnt be surprised to learn he had more time on screen than Leo.

Caught Birds Of Prey And The Blah...Blah...Blah Harley Quinn Whatever tonight. Fun stuff.

For a movie that all the feministy Twitter types were losing it over, it seems oddly sexist that the plot revolves around 5 women fighting a fabulously gay man and his boyfriend over a fancy diamond.

Oh, and I never expected the entirety of the conflict of this flick to hinge on everyone --

    .

That being said, I dug this one. Loved that Pulp Fiction approach to non-linear storytelling. Loved the action - The John Wick choreography guys were behind this and you could tell. Margot Robbie is still hot as fire, but she actually has a character here. Harley in Suicide Squad seemed more like a really dedicated Pornhub Community parody of Harley. Here, she actually has those little things called "motivations" and "more character than a Hot Topic t-shirt rack".

Its just fun shit. Never take it seriously, brace your ears for a main character who sounds like Fran Drescher as The Nanny, and strap in for some confetti and glitter, dumb fuck "girl power" fun.

Oh... and Victor Zzaz and Black Mask are in as the villains. Mask is as queer as a 13-hour clock, Zzaz is obviously his not-so-secret secret lover and they're just too afraid to admit it.

    I'll give it 9 Anti-Suicide Squad, pro-feminism rants out of 10.

    Also watched Bloodshot.

Vin Diesel is a great action movie dude, but he has all the emotional range of someone carved out of wood. I don't think he knows how to smile. At least in Bloodshot, his face muscles get the same workout as an armless man on bicep day.

The whole of Bloodshot feels like one of those sort of mid-2000's action/sci-fi flicks. Double feature this with something like Ultraviolet or the live-action Aeon Flux.

The plot is silly -- something about forcing Vin Diesel's genetically enhanced soldier to kill employees of a company one-by-one, by putting him through the same elaborate simulation and then siccing him on the "bad" guys - who are really just the main villain's former business partners and now rivals.

The action is fun. But its so bloodless. Fucking PG-13. Make this R-rated and have bits and pieces of Vin's diesel get chipped and chopped away in bloody chunks and then gradually grow back, and you might have something visually stimulating. Instead, Bloodshot looks like he's surrounded by whirling sand that reconstitutes itself on his body. Lame.

Honestly, the Coronavirus killed this movie. But it was going to die a slow and painful death in theaters, anyway.

Its just garbage, b-movie junk food. Call it a Pirate Bay special.

    No "Valiant Universe" for you.

I'll give it 5 "We tried to make another shared movie universe, and faileds" out of 10.

The actors say "more than likely" but the director says essentially no. It's funny 'cuz the thought never even occurred to me when i saw it and I'm the kind of guy that wants every character to be gay. If anyone seemed like it to me, it was The Huntress.

We watched Christopher Robin on Friday night. It was good, but was definitely missing something. And Tigger looked like shit.

McGregor was brilliant though, as always.

    3/5.

Yesterday, watched the original Alice In Wonderland. Super trip down memory lane, that was. Mad as hell, but a super fun watch.

    4/5.

The lad wants to watch The Jungle Book next...

I watched a couple recent award season darlings. Spoilers in my second review.

    Hidden Figures (2016)
This movie was great. I really liked all the characters especially the 3 leads. It reminded me of Remember the Titans in that it's a PG movie that deals with the Civil Rights movement as the backdrop so you don't get any intense racism just a kid-friendly version of it but it still functions well to make you feel good about what the characters overcome. This is probably the best NASA movie outside of Apollo 13. Costner was perfect for the boss role. Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst were both also really good casting choices for the subtly racist quasi-antagonist roles. Feel good movie, easy to watch, very enjoyable. 8.8/10

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
I wasn't as high on this one. It was good but there were things that irked me. I realized afterwards that it wasn't about solving the murder, it was about the characters and their personal journey. The movie starts with the murder already in the past so that makes sense, they only alluded to the details of it sparingly. But I was still scratching my head when the suspect guy who came into Mildred's store acting menacing then was bragging about committing a similar rape/murder by fire turned out NOT to be the guy. Huh? If he was just a rando then why did he come into Mildred's store and fuck with her? Another thing that irked me was how did Sam Rockwell not get charges pressed against him for assault? I know he's a cop but not only did he beat up and throw the advertising guy out the window in broad daylight in front of witnesses but he also punched the secretary in the face really hard (both employed upstanding white people in this small town). This wasn't like his previous crime where he tortured a black guy in custody behind closed doors, this was an egregious public assault. Feels like he would have been charged for sure.

Anyway the movie was a little too glum for my taste but I felt like it started to get good in the second half after Woody Harrelson offed himself. I really liked Peter Dinklage's role. The dinner scene with him and the ex-husband sitting nearby was so good. And the way it ended with Sam Rockwell coming around to being a decent guy was a nice arc, even if he did seem like a supremely dangerous dickhead for most of the movie.

I recently went on a movie binge with movies in the hidden gems section of Netflix.

Good Time, Locke, Blue Ruin, Cop Car, and Stanford Prison Experiment. All worth a watch.

I thought Good Time was really well done. Robert Pattinson put in a hell of a performance. Same directors as Uncut Gems. So it has a similar feel. 8/10

Locke-interesting film. Tom Hardy is the only actor we actually see in the entire movie. He is driving down a highway talking on the phone to different people. It's 1.5 hours so well worth the watch and it doesn't drag at all. 7.5/10

Blue Ruin is a revenge independent film. Good acting, slow pace but with some intense scenes in the beginning, middle, and end. 7/10

Cop Car-led by Kevin Bacon. Another 1.5 hour fun movie. Has some charm with a couple 10 year old kids stealing a cop car which turns to an intense shootout. 7/10

Stanford Prison-based on the real life experiment. I believe there is a real documentary on it. This is the film version. It does drag a little bit but it's so crazy how these students acted while in the experiment. 6.5/10

Watched Long Shot last week with Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron. Loved it. Sweet, funny and rather charming. 4/5.

Watched Spider-Man: Far From Home this past weekend. Again, totally loved it. For me, better than Homecoming. Gyllenhaal was rather good in this and the comedy and action was top notch.

I'd been missing watching the MCU after getting through the majority of the films in 2019. I think I might try one of the TV series next on Disney+. Agent Carter, perhaps.

I thought it was very good. My wife had never heard of the experiment so she was in shock about what happened. I think the documentary is called Quiet Rage and that's very well done too.

I also think of the line by Tame-One "She don't know how to act, like Vin Diesel" on the track "See Thru" (Leak Brothers)

"Someone carved out of wood" How fucking ironic you said that (I am Groot)

A lot of people don't know that this is a bad as fuck comic. I remember the character, my brother and I fucking loved the smaller companies such as Valiant. Probably had a few of his comics but when I heard a movie was being released I snagged a couple recent issues. I have to agree, PG-13 was the wrong way to go. It was too much like that XXX shit only he wasn't enhanced.

In the movie they gave him a little bit of Universal meets Winter Soldier vibe only he was completely aware to an extent (without ruining shit I'll slow it down). I am curious if the idea was to make another universe or just Valiant movies in general.

Saw "Rocket Man" over the weekend, and I enjoyed it. I've long been a fan of Elton John's music, and I knew he'd led a charmed life - that is, with the lifestyle he led, it's rather amazing that he survived. My wife and I were discussing it, and while it doesn't come close to matching Bohemian Rhapsody, we both agreed it was one of the better movies we've seen in a while.

    Green Book

I absolutely loved it. Both lead characters were so charming and endearing. Similar to Hidden Figures which I reviewed a few posts ago, it was a feel good Civil Rights era story that never went too dark (but this one was at least PG-13 instead of PG).

I'm so happy it won Best Picture (they don't always pick such a good choice). Granted there are two of the other nominees that I haven't seen (Roma and The Favourite) but of the 6 that I've seen I would definitely give it to Green Book. Also glad Mahershala Ali won for best supporting actor. He was really good, as was Viggo (but I'm good with Rami winning for Bohemian Rhapsody).

    9.5/10

    Bird of Prey

Awesome movie. Margot Robbie is no doubt made for this role just like Hugh Jackman was made for Wolverine. I love how the top 2 female comic book characters (Black Widow and Harley Quinn) are lucha libre specialists.

I liked everything about it. Badass villain, they did a good job by not overwhelming you with different subplots that you couldn't follow, and I like the way it looked visually.

    B+

After finishing the MCU films, I may start the DC ones. So that would mean Man of Steel tonight.

Of these films, I've only seen Aquaman and I quite enjoyed that.

    Aquaman was great.

Man of Steel is awesome. I'm a big fan of Henry Cavill as Superman and I hope he does in fact return to play the role.

I don't get hyped for a lot of movies. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Child's Play, anything new in those series I am there. Outside of that though, very rarely. Man of Steel was one of those though. I absolutely loved Superman. The Richard Donner films are up there as my favorite films. I even liked Superman Returns. So when I heard they were making Man of Steel, I was beyond ecstatic. However after watching it, what a fucking turd of a film. It was so bad, I didn't check out any other DC film until Wonder Woman, which was alright, and Aquaman, which I though was brilliant. But fuck Man of Steel. Single handedly destroyed my love of Superman.

I liked Man of Steel. It has some good moments. It’s not the best Superman movie but it’s enjoyable.

Single handedly destroyed my love of Superman.

So fucking mad just thinking about it. Pretty sure I'd rather be castrated than ever watch that film again.

I watched "Welcome to Marwen" last night, which was free on Cinemax. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, especially at that time of the night. While it is both sad, and violent at the same time (which was why my bride did not care to watch it with me) it was really well done. The story was solid, compelling, and while certainly predictable, it moved at a good enough pace so I was engaged along with it.

So, didn't end up watching Man of Steel in the end, but will get to it.

Watched Blockers on Netflix on Friday night. I imagine a lot of folk would hate this, but I had a lot of fun with this, as did my wife, who loves John Cena quite a bit. Cena being over the top and goofy really fit in well with this film. Not exactly a laugh a minute comedy, but I did laugh out loud a good few times. A fun teen comedy.

Those that know my film history on here will not be surprised that I had never seen Honey I Shrunk The Kids. Until Saturday that was. I really struggled with this and found it pretty dull and uninteresting. I did see Honey I Blew Up The Kid though at the cinema back in the day and I remember that being good. My lad wants to watch that next, so happy to do that. Haven't seen the third film in the series either.

I've been feeling all nostalgic lately and ordered myself the first two seasons of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Cannot wait to watch them. Loved them as a kid. But further to that, I have also picked up the 3 newer movies on Blu-ray because they were cheap as chips. I hear they're probably not great, but I'll make up my own mind there.

Now all that's left is to get the original trilogy of films. Is it worth bothering on Blu ray though when they're so much cheaper on DVD, that is the question.

My son watched the newer version of the TV show a couple of years ago, but I wasn't feeling it.

First time I saw Blockers I didn’t think it was that great. Passably funny but that was it. Watched it a second time and it was much funnier. Cena was good in his role but Ike Barinholtz stole the movie for me. Some of the one liners he had were hilarious.

    He did, aye.

Watching this on Friday, I thought he was the actor who played Ned in Friends. He was not. No need to mention this, but I have.

He’s the dude from Neighbors, which he was the best part of by far. He’s one of a few guys that always seem to steal the show when they’re not the main character.

I have the whole series of the old TMNT show. That first six episode set is still as awesome today as it was back then.

I'm not sure how the Blu Rays are. I have a 4 movie set I got from like Wal-Mart, with the first three flicks and the animated one from like 2007 (which I thought was real good!). If there are extras on the Blu Ray I might opt to buy them but depends what price they'd be too.

Honey I Shrunk The Kids is awesome. I saw it in theaters and drove my parents nuts after because I was worried about scorpions in the back yard.

Blockers is great comedy. There's nothing better then a movie where John Cena plays a sensitive, concerned father attempting to prevent his smoking-hot daughter from having sex.

I'd never heard of it, so went in with zero expectations with Blockers, so that always helps.

Both of these are in the thriller/horror genre

Ghost Stories on Hulu was solid. Some might find the first 30 minutes boring but I thought the atmosphere and the slow build worked. The last hour is well worth the watch.

I See You on amazon prime was really good. It leads you to believe it's about one thing but really changes direction halfway through. Cast was solid,

    Fighting With My Family

This was enjoyable. It was light spirited and struck the right tone as an uplifting wrestling story. I don't quite care if it was white washed for the sake of cinema or to make the WWE look good. My only complaint was when Paige got in the ring for her Raw debut (the climax) they made it seem like she really froze on the mic (when in real life she spoke on the mic prior to the match beginning). I liked when she was nervous in the locker room and got the pep talk from her brother but they played that up a little too much in the ring to the point it made her look bad, like how the hell are they giving the title to this girl who can't even speak a word when it's her turn? So that part felt overly dramatized to me but I guess it paid off after the match when she finally spoke and said this is for all the different people out there, which was admittedly a nice moment in the movie but I felt they could have kept it in line with reality and still had a great payoff. Mind you I didn't see this match until I finished the movie and watched it on youtube.

Lena Headey was good as the mom. Ultimately this was a fairly typical PG-13 sports movie but it was a good one of those.

This exactly sums it up for me. Being a lifelong fan who enjoyed Paige's initial run, I found myself overlooking the differences between this, the documentary, and my own recollections. I knew the Rock produced this, and because of it, he inserted himself far more in this story than made sense, but it was done to make the story a little more fun, or just to move things along. This was well done.

So the other day I turned on the TV and there was a still picture of the new Scooby Doo movie Scoob. The baby reached out for it and continued to do so everytime that image was displayed. My wife bought the movie and our one year old has now become obsessed with Scooby. We've watched this movie like twenty times now. He just sits, watches and wiggles his little butt. Scooby just sucks everyone in, no matter the age.

Movie is great too. I grew up watching reruns of Blue Falcon, Wacky Races and Scooby Doo on Cartoon Network. Anyone with love for these old cartoons should watch because the movie plays as a sequel to the original Scooby TV show and mixes in tons easter eggs and old characters from Hanna-Barbera.

Will Forte is awesome as well as Shaggy.

Plus, there is no Scrappy-Doo, who grated on my nerves like fingers on a chalkboard, when I was a child.

Absoutely terrible. There's an interesting comic presence that's a lot of fun in the first act and they never go back to it. Opting instead for a fairly heavy-handed environmental/social message that largely ignores the titutlar pretense.

The most interesting character is removed from the final payoff. Avoid this.

Bizarre. I guess you gleaned something from it that I couldn't. I found the whole 3rd act to be a rapid right-turn and none of the characters seemed true to their build-up to that point in the film.

My Best Friend's Wedding - Cute, but Julia Roberts (Juliana) is really a terrible person. So glad it didn't end like I thought it would. I understand why it was popular.

Dirty Dancing - I watched this one a long time ago, didn't think much of it. This time I really liked it, it's quite sexy, love Baby and thought it was fun. Great soundtrack too!

Saw two films at the weekend. Jurassic Park III. Never seen it before, shock horror, and expected it to suck hard. With such low expectation though, I really rather enjoyed it. 2nd film I've seen Tea Leoni in and the second film where she plays the annoying, pretty dumb blonde role. Not as bad in this as her character was in Bad Boys, but annoying enough. That said, I only really noticed it early on here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The first one with Megan Fox. Some of the humour was a bit ropey, I felt, but it was loads of fun and my son loved it.

Looking forward to a bit of Bebop and Rocksteady in the sequel.

Watched Turtles - Out of the Shadows at the weekend. Christ alive, Megan Fox is stunning. Anyway, I'd completely forgotten that Sheamus was in this. Brilliant. I actually preferred the first one, but this was still a lot of fun. Michelangelo was always my favourite when I was a kid and nothing has changed. Stating the obvious here, I feel.

Not comparing it at all, but these films do have a certain Avengers vibe to them.

Thinking back to the original trilogy and the second one being called 'The Secret of the Ooze', is this essentially a remake of that? And if so, does that mean that a 3rd film will be coming at some point? I never watched the original films, just the TV show.

Had some cringe worthy moments with some very gruesome scenes. Had a nice slow build but then picked up around the 40 minute mark. This film had a wicker man/midsommar feel to it. Definitely a good horror movie. I give it 7.5/10.

    2 more over the weekend.

The Amazing Spider-Man. 4/5. Loved it. For some reason, wasn't sure what to expect going in. But 2 and a quarter hours absolutely flew by. Haven't seen Garfield as an actor before, but he was pretty good. Left me wanting to see the sequel.

And we watched the 2007 TMNT animated movie on Saturday night. I'd only read positive reviews, but Christ was it boring. Took a lot of effort to not fall asleep. A sequel was hinted at towards the end, that clearly didn't happen. I thought this was pretty bad. 2/5. Avoided 1/5 due to me being less sleepy for the last 15/20.

I saw Dumbo (2019) over the weekend on Disney +. I enjoyed it, thought Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito were superb. I know I've probably seen the original before but can't remember much about it so I may have to rewatch that at some point.

I was going to watch Paraiste and the Lodge yesterday, but I felt cleaning the house was more important. I hope to catch those two over the upcoming month.

I assume there will be. Shocked at how good these newer live action movies have been. What ultimately killed the original films was that the first one was so grimey and cool the other 2 just keep getting more and more corny. I just watched 3 the other day and it sucked. The first is dope, the 2nd is tolerable but by the 3rd you could tell they didn't give a shit about anyone but 5 year olds. Even the toys based on that movie were jank.

I recall 3 having an awesome soundtrack though. I had it on cassette tape. I think I may have transferred it to CD at some point, I should go dig it out!

Well that main song from the movies, that upbeat shit was all we needed to hear to assemble and fight crime when I was younger.

    The Nice Guys

Good flick with that classic 70s LA vibe similar to Boogie Nights. Gosling and Crowe are great together, but Gosling is the scene stealer in a very funny role.

    I'll score this 7.9/10

One of the best movies I've seen this year so far. The main character, "Snowball", reminds me of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. That might be because I literally just watched vol 1 the night before last.

    5 stars.

    6 Underground:

Very enjoyable, balls to the wall action flick directed by Michael Bat and starring Ryan Reynolds as the billionaire leader of a team of quasi-mercenaries tasked with taking down bad guys. The opening car chase scene was well executed and came to a shocking end. The movie was kind of mindless, no twists or turns to be figured out, but a great action movie that doesn’t let up. Kind of has some Deadpool vibes because it’s filled with extremely bloody kills and Reynolds’ now standard snarky comedy, which isn’t a bad thing. Great way to spend two hours. Has the potential to become a franchise and I wouldn’t be disappointed if it does.

    8.5/10

Jurassic World - Fallen Kingdom. 7/10. Not as good as the first one, but enjoyable. Story was a little weak, but yeah, dinosaurs and shit.

I thought it sagged badly in the second act. Also the low prices for the dinosaurs were ludicrous. Even if this new trilogy is trying to put across the message that people have gotten used to seeing dinosaurs and need new creations to entertain them, they’ve never been up for sale and are exceptionally rare - yet you could buy 7 or 8 of them at that auction for the price of a single footballer.

    FANTASY ISLAND

I've been wanting to rent it based on the cover at Redbox for about 3 weeks lol. I assume this is in some weird way associated with the tv show? I never watched it and only know the little midget guy, anything outside of him and the name of the show, zero clue. But this movie was surprisingly pretty sweet. Spoiler alert, I wasn't a big fan of the ending but that's honestly the majority of "horror/thriller" movie endings I've seen in the last oh shit, 25 yeas. They just can't seem to stray from the M Night Shamalyan type endings.

7/10. The cast is dope, Michael Pena delivered in a serious role which I haven't seen him do since The Shield. Which btw, if you haven't seen him on that show, get it over with.

Should really have him as the adversary for John Cena in a movie, the poster can say Pena Vs. Cena in giant letters. Just a side thought.

Awesome movie. It’s on Netflix. One of the few movies that I was completely silent at the end because it struck a nerve.

My bride found an older romcom on DVD that we hadn't seen before. Just Like Heaven, starring Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon, from 2005.

We both enjoyed it - a light romantic comedy with a decent enough premise, and a fine job by Ruffalo and Witherspoon. I found it charming, it certainly didn't take itself too seriously, and while we were rooting for both characters, it just kept getting better.

Not sure how we'd missed it over the years, but I'm glad we spent the time on it.

I watched Doctor Sleep again because I finally bought the book after fuck knows how many years of wanting to, and then it would be sold out when I'd think of it lol. Anyway.....A very good movie. I hope it's one that holds up 20 years from now because I feel like that's what made The Shining so good. I could be 8, 18, 38, still love it.

    Extraction:

Excellent action movie. Short on plot, like really short, but very long on action. Can’t say enough good things about it. Action scenes are
top notch and the gun-fu fights are some of the best I’ve seen lately. Good car chase scene. My god, the kills are brutal. Everybody took three or four bullets.

The best scene was in the beginning when Hemsworth first finds the kid and fights his way out. It was shot to look like one continuous shot and apparently took 10 days to film. The result was worth the work. And the bridge scene at the end was well done too. Highly recommend.

    9/10

Watched Frozen on Friday night. Loved it. Funny, charming, sweet. 5 out of 5.

Watched Frozen II on Saturday night. Such a massive let-down. Had it's moments, but lacked the charm and humour of the first and was actually a slog to get through without falling asleep. 2 out of 5.

100% agree. I hate when my daughter wants to watch part II. I'm like, let's watch the original for the 67th time. The second one is terrible.

Sequels are rarely as good as the original, so when I saw Frozen II, I didn't expect it to be another Toy Story, I figured it would be closer to Lion King 1 1/2.

I enjoyed it more than I expected, but agree it wasn't as good as the first. It's more like how Finding Dory didn't disappoint terribly, just a fun way to spend an hour and a half eating popcorn.
