He would've been a great episode of Are you afraid of the dark? back in the day.

Across the Spiderverse - the animation is gorgeous and Jason Schwartzman and Oscar Isaac are great as The Spot and Spider-Man 2099 respectively. I really enjoyed the prologue and was surprised by the depth of the characterisation, especially around the family drama for both Miles and Gwen. Saying all that, I think I preferred the relative simplicity of the first film. This is a long film with some scenes that drag and it takes a while to get to the big stuff that has been front and centre in the trailers.

Just saw Across the Spiderverse. Fucking awesome. Visually STUNNING. The animation is absolutely gorgeous. So much style and creativity. That alone is worth it but the characters and dynamics are also so well developed. Jam-packed with Easter eggs/references, as well, but it fits given the multiverse stuff going on. Good comedy but not where it overtakes it like some of the MCU stuff. The serious moments hit strong. Hell, even a few simple lines got me a little choked at points. I will say

Never thought to give these animated films a shot. I was disappointed by Spider-Man (2002) so much that I didn't check out much of the rest. I've seen Spider-Man in a couple of Avengers movies but he just does nothing for me. Probably my least favorite superhero. Oh, I did see that one Spider-Man movie where Michael Keaton was a falcon or something.

Take a crack at Into The Spider-verse. There's about half a dozen different Spider-folks in that (one is a cartoon pig and one is voiced by Nicolas Cage!) and then this new one has even more. Maybe you'll find the Spider-person that tickles your fancy. If not, ol' Spider-mth would be happy to tickle it for you...

Watched a few spooky movies lately...

Nope - Finally got around to seeing this. Had done my best to know as little as possible going into it. Though it was pretty good overall. Interesting twist on the concept.

Sissy - A Shutter original. Gave me The Joker and Black Mirror vibes in some regards. Main actress was great. Some nasty gore.

Candyman (2021) - I've only seen the original once at least a decade ago so I didn't remember most of the connective stuff but they recapped pretty good, it seemed. Well shot, some good spooky scenes, interesting approach to addressing real issues. Really liked this a lot.

3+ hours, wish I had seen this in the theatre but it was still pretty awesome. I liked the incorporation of the water tribe, and everything just flowed perfectly. It didn't feel like a 3+ hour movie and as long as the next 2 don't take 20 years to come out I'm here for it.

This was crazy. Some parts just felt crazy to be crazy. If LSD was still popular I would've dropped some acid. Mia Goth is phenomenal. Alexander Skarsgard is incredible and has been underrated ever since True Blood. I suggest checking this out on Hulu. 7/10. It's an above average movie that is worth at least one spin.

    Across the Spiderverse

Awesome. I really enjoyed the various animations and more of a focus on Gwen and her story. They have a good thing going with Miles' Spider Man. It still blows me away the guy who played Raekwon on the Hulu Wu Tang show does the voice AND wants to play the live action version. I doubt that would happen dude is like 30+ but you never know.

Indiana Jones was good, like really good. A way better ending for Indy than Han. I will say there is a moment at the end that felt a bit Crystal Skull, but it was actually cool and I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

    The Flash

I can't believe how bad movies have gotten now. Bad protagonist, bottom barrel dialogue and overall a pointless watch. Batman looked cool, but it was a completely different character than the real 1989 Batman. Since the beginning of DC's cinematic universe, they botched these heroes so much and it'll be refreshing to finally see the Snyder stuff put to rest.

This is a piece of shit. Eject. 2/10

I thought it was cool. What I've noticed is there are definitely 2 camps: You enjoyed it or you loathed it. Is it my favorite? Of course not. I'll be honest I had no real expectations other than I wanted to see Michael Keaton as Batman again. That was the only appeal I had for the Batgirl movie, if it was good, bad, didn't matter.

There was some RUMOR that if this movie did well we were going to possibly see a Batman Beyond movie with Keaton as Old Man Bruce. Whatever. I've heard about a supposed Batman Beyond movie for 20 years it's nothing new at all. Shit we heard about The Dark Knight possibly being a movie as far back as the mid 90's which was basically going to be Batman Legacy or whatever the fuck they were calling that 3rd Keaton film.

7/10. They could've spent more time developing the villain and maybe a Jim Carrey cameo as Riddler but other than that this movie is worth checking out. Especially if you're a fan of nostalgia which you definitely see here. I thought this movie did the nostalgia thing better than the tv show did.

Bros - I was really looking forward to this but was really disappointed. It was just a weak by the numbers rom com plot that felt secondary to the movie trying to educate the audience on queer history/struggle despite a lot of humor being aimed at a queer audience who would already be well aware. It felt at odds with itself. The main character was pretty unlikable, too, and they did a, "it's OK he's an asshole because it's hard being gay" excuse. Like a lot of Hollywood's LGBTQ output, there's too much focus on queer suffering, not enough focus on queer joy. Also, didn't appreciate some biphobic/bi-erasure jokes. Overall: meh/10

While I actually think the most recent Batman Beyond comic series did a decent job with it the existence of Damian Wayne complicates any Batman Beyond project.

Speaking of Batman I saw Oppenheimer tonight. Great movie. Robert Downey Jr playing a villain for the first time I can remember since the meh sequel to The Fugitive was great. Completely different than anything he's been doing since he got clean and became a giant star again.

Also I got to the AMC at 5:30. 5:30 on Tuesday and the line was out the door. I've been to that place on the night of the openings of The Force Awakens and Avengers Endgame and have never seen it this busy. Half the people going to the Dolby theater for Barbie and half the people going to the IMAX for Oppenheimer. Then at 9:00 when the movie let out the place was still packed. On a Tuesday.

I have not read a Batman Beyond comic, at least recently so I'm not sure if what you're saying would affect a movie project unless DC is going the route of Marvel where they're trying to retcon their books to match the movies or whatever the fuck they're doing lol. I just personally don't believe any movie ideas until the ticket is in my hand to see it. So many rumors going back to the 80's of possible X-Men movies and stuff like that. Black Adam was "in development" for like 15 years so who knows. IMO, if they're going to do some Batman Beyond stuff, keep it animated. Nothing in the super hero realm is better than DC's animated movies. Except Winter Solider.

My son works at a mall here that has a FLIX and holy shit in all the years I've gone to that mall, I've never seen the parking lot that full on the FLIX side. I was going to see Barbie this week but I might hold off lol.

Hidden Strike was pretty damn terrible lol.

I couldn't get over the fact it all looked like it happened in a warehouse with a giant green screen. Cena and Chan didn't really have any chemistry but I will say this...They have outtakes they show during the end credits, that was better than the entire movie.

    Just a running list

Transformers - I don't follow thus much but the wife and the boy love it. I've seen the others I just haven't gotten into them much. Anywho, had no idea this was another reboot. I was getting irritated when OP was bitching about fighting with humans for the millionth time until I realized it was a reboot. Anywho, wasn't bad and the gi joe crossover intrigues me a bit as transformers and gi joe was my childhood.

Flash - I thought it was pretty good. Keaton killed it and it bums me out what we may have lost put on. Miller can fuck off.

Indiana Jones - so much better than I thought it was going to be. I went in with zero hopes and left more than happy. Good little movie. I'll probably watch it again down the road.

Sound of freedom - wife and I took advantage of the free tickets you can get. Movie isn't bad. It's terrible this shit is just like normal business in today's world. You lay say, but it's developing countries with the problem. No its bad in the usa too. People give it flack because it's apparently a Christian fueled movie but there's maybe 2 references to God in the entire thing so its.not heating you over the head at any point.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Absolutely LOVED it. I'd put it up there with the 2012 series as one of the best iterations in the franchise. Highly recommend it.

went to see Indiana Jones and fucking loved it. So much nostalgia, it was intoxicating. Absolute popcorn flick that you need to see in the theatre, with nonstop action. Balanced story with funny and action. Doesnt matter that the action is utterly unrealistic, and the story is ridiculous, it was just POPCORN FUN.

8/10 for me. Go see it.

Loved it. A little something for everyone. One of those movies that you understand why it's made a billion. 9/10. Almost a perfect movie.

Lincoln lawyer - wife wanted to watch it as she saw a few episodes of the TV series and said it was good. The movie has a great cast and a couple of good twists. Some of the plot points was a bit to convenient but overall very enjoyable.

8/10 for me. Go see it.
I was so worried coming into this but it defied all expectations from start to finish. It made the kiddo a bean to the point we had to marathon the rest of them the following few weeks.

    Summer of '84

Horror movie buff friend of mine suggested this one and I wasn't disappointed. It reminded me of the movie Disturbia and the episode of Tales from the Crypt where the kids think the coroner is actually a murderer. Some very cool 80's references like GI Joe walkie talkies. So yeah if you're a fan of teenage kids trying to solve a serial killer case check it out.

“Strays” was crude and juvenile, but way better than I thought it would be.

My oldest son and I want to go see Strays.

I was hoping to see the new Ninja Turtles but it's been hard to find time and movies are so expensive. Sunday is national movie day or something like that so Flix is offering $4 tickets. Might go to see Ninja Turtles or maybe Blue Beetle.

When tickets around here are $12.50 I have to wait for the discount days lol. Wednesdays are $5.75....no wonder people don't come out unless it's an absolute must see movie.

The turnaround is so quick compared to when we were younger. Plus I heard Blue was actually going to be released on HBO Max but for some reason they decided no let's put Miguel on the big screen.

Strays was fun. Will Forte plays sleaze so well.

Turtles was good. Definitely meddled with the back story. My son Mav really enjoyed it. It was fun to see the lesser known mutants get some shine.

Mav and I enjoyed Blue Beetle too. Nothing earth shattering plot wise but it was fun romp.

Mav is a movie mark to the point he asks what is new this week every weekend. Not a lot to do so we've seen a lot that has come out this summer. He was bummed I wouldn't take him to see Strays though.

    Fast X

I've seen all of these movies and like most franchises some are better than others. I would definitely put this one in my top 5. Some of the shit is just way too over the top that I was laughing but that's how these movies are. The only one that ever seemed quasi-realistic was the first one.

Barbie 6/10 - Wasn't bad, hopefully the sequels are better.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter 8/10 - Man this movie was fun
Jurassic Park in 3D 9/10 - First time seeing this in theaters in 30 years, what a blast.

Saw Retribution a few days back with Liam Neeson. Meh. I was thinking with the car bomb plot with the kids being in the car I'd get a little Taken and little Speed combo but I left feeling that's not what I got at all. It was ok, probably would have skipped but no kid, no life and $5 movie Tuesday at Regal got my butt in the seat.

Local Regal did not have the 3D Jurassic Park which is stupid. I've seen that movie tons of times and it just doesn't get old. I would have loved to take Mav to that.

Ingrid Goes West. 8/10. Knew little about it but Aubrey Plaza and O'Shea Jackson Jr. just kill it.

Talented Mr Ripley 7/10. Similar film to Ingrid Goes West in many ways, but felt it dragged in parts

    Last Voyage of Demeter

Kind of on a string of mediocre movies. This movie had promise it had a cool vibe and a solid cast.

The problem is that 99% of the movie takes place on this little ass ship and Dracula is already doing his thing within the first 15. There are definitely way too many "waiting for Dracula to kill someone" moments because again, it all takes place on this ship.

5/10 Definitely felt like it was some type of possible origin story to set up another Dracula movie or maybe not. Either way if you're going that route don't literally spend your time on the last voyage.

I haven't seen it but I was curious because I read the movie was based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Probably why you got the origin story feels from it.

Last Voyage of the Demeter was fucking awesome. It's not really an origin story as the novel Dracula mostly takes place before this voyage.

For sure, but since this movie bombed we won't see any follow ups . Between this and Renfield doing poorly, is Dracula dead to modern audiences?

I think dead is a bit far but I also think that's an unfortunate but mostly fair consideration.

Just soooo many vampire options that have been put out there over the years that make Bram Stoker's vampire look outdated and less relatable to more modern audiences.

Hell we could do a full on list of everyone's favorite vampire sagas and it would probably be all over the place with different opinions.

I honestly haven't given a shit about anything Dracula since the 90's. I love shows/movies about vampires though.

This movie had potential but as I said, making a 2 hour movie take place almost entirely on this little ass ship and not really having any build....It was almost like watching a 2 hour end boss battle lol. Maybe they have done this but I'm down for a true origin story movie. Birth to vampire. Like the Coppola movie from the early 90's you get a little bit of the origin and whether that's true or not idk.

Saw this on FB, had to share. Artwork by Ralf Krause.

We didn't appreciate movies like this enough. Edward Furlong had a string of bangers. Very impressive. Kids from his era maybe had 1 or 2 movies that people remember, this kid was basically to the 90's what Corey Feldman was to the 80's.

The Anne Rice vampire chronicles did a pretty dope (imo) vampire origin story. The written version was terrific anyway, the movie adaptation - Queen of the Damned - not quite so much though.

I thought the Interview with the Vampire show on AMC was pretty awesome. I do think they're making a season 2 but the release date is like mid 2024 maybe even later now.

I think for me it really ended with Blade 3. Calling him fuckin Drake.

haha I was watching "live tv" on Amazon Prime and some MGM channel had that movie on. I've seen it probably 100 times my aunt even dubbed it off the rental which sometimes was hard to do but she pulled it off with that double VCR trick.

I watched The Pope's Exorcist yesterday. I heard mixed reviews but honestly I thought it was pretty good. If you're into that kind of stuff I would definitely suggest checking it out. Like with Dracula, the possession movies are hit or miss for me. I thought they did a good job with this one. Crowe was actually pretty convincing and I'm not a big fan of his recent work. Older stuff was gold.

I started to watch the Pope's Exorcist, but I was watching it on my phone and I have trouble watching videos on the phone, too small of a platform I suppose. I'll have to chceck it out on my TV one day.

A recent Crowe performance I liked was Unhinged.

Dracula just walking through all those cops and getting to Phoebe to call her a bitch and almost kill her is still one of the greatest villain moments of all time. Bela set the standard and Lee brought it to be bloody, but damn Duncan fucking nailed it, I even like the World Domination plot. Monster Squad is one of the all time great 80s films.

Gillman was absolutely useless in that film. Killed by a shotgun. Weak as fuck.

When I watched the documentary the whole entire time I was just blown away at how oblivious the cast, director, etc. were about how much of a cult following this movie had until like 10-15 years ago. Didn't realize it was a cult following it felt like everyone and their mom had seen this movie back in the day.

YES, just mowing them down without taking his eyes off her... ugh, as a kid that was terrifying.

And the Monster yelling "Phoebe... BYYYE " with the damn teddy bear, pure heartstring fuel.

That is probably the best Creature from the Black Lagoon design we will ever get too.

    Fall (2022) - 7/10

Simple premise, two girls decide to climb a 2,000 foot radio tower, and bad things happen. I don't really get uncomfortable watching movies but I did during this one. When the camera looked down off the tower was so unnerving. I thought about stopping it at several moments cause I hate heights. And even though I'm safe on my couch it still got to me.

Still, though it was a good film, not sure I'd ever watch it again, but I saw they are making a sequel.

    “The Equalizer 3”.

Denzel was amazing as always, thought it was a fitting end (?) to the current series. Dude is a fucking legend in the acting game, deserves to be included in the GOAT conversation. Very cool seeing Dakota reunited with Denzel, that film set must have been so much fun for the both of them.

I’d be down for a spin-off of the “Equalizer” series with Fanning’s Collins character, hopefully calling the shots for Conroy’s team; I marked out at Denman’s appearance.

Now this may sound crazy, but De Niro and DiCaprio are very good at acting.

I haven't watched too many new movies this month but I wanted to check this one out. Definitely worth the time.

Have you or @mth seen "American Mary" by the Soska Sisters? It's free on TUBI but IDK if it's worth my time lol. Soska Sisters are very hit or miss for me. I feel ashamed admitting I'm a fan mainly because they're beautiful but they did a good job with Rabid even if CM Punk was fucking terrible in it.

Hilarious. I love Bill Burr. This movie very South Park like in the sense that they put all the pro's and con's of modern society and shit on everything. 8/10. Boyz II Men pinball.

    The Wolf Man (1941)
Not a bad film, but a lot of it didn't make sense. Like why did the gypsy turn into an actual wolf, but Lon Chaney Jr.'s character turn into a wolf man?

    The Mummy (1932)
This movie was really boring for me.

It's like in Fright Night when Evil turns into a wolf instead of a wolf man, never understood it. Maybe there's stages to it? IDK.

I watched Frankenstein for the first time in forever, decades. Barely over an hour but so good. I forgot about the part where he throws the little girl into the pond like holy shit they were going hard!

Haha yeah, we saw a double feature of The Invisible Man and Frankenstein a few weeks ago. Those were much better than Wolf Man and the Mummy.

I haven't seen all the Universal Monster movies, but from what I've seen this is how I'd rank them:

    1. The Invisible Man
    2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
    3. Dracula
    4. Frankenstein
    5. The Wolf Man
    6. The Mummy

There was a point where they were all on Peacock. Perhaps they are back on there for Halloween season. The wife is out of town for work so I have today and tomorrow to watch movies!

I was shocked at how many they took off Peacock and replaced with the lesser known titles like Son of Dracula.

    Just put on Monster Squad!

It's why I've started back up with buying physical copies. Don't have to worry about movies disappearing.

I just wish there was one platform for all the movies. Something like Spotify but for films. It would have basically everything.

I don't understand why, for example, the Willow TV show was removed from Disney +. It's made by Disney, so why don't they just leave it up? I understand Netflix having licensing windows for content not made by Netflix. Like why did Paramount + remove the Jordan Peele Twilight Zone show?

    The Marvels

This was a really good movie. The chemistry between Carol, Monica, and Kamala is on point and Nick Fury is always a blessing in these movies. I definitely recommend seeing this. 7/10. Could've been longer, one of the shortest MCU movies to date but when you have a young kid who needs to pee every 45 minutes it works lol.

Watched a few things recently and have been meaning to slap up some thoughts:

Sleepaway Camp 1, 2, & 3 - First one was the best. Have read a lot of stuff about it afterward on both sides of issue as it pertains to the ending and being a positive or negative thing (trying not to spoil it even though I know it's old as shit). Second one was good in its own way but the Angela of the second felt in no way the same character as Angela in the first and it'd have been better if they'd just made this a new person. Third one was pretty shitty outside of a bit of funny bad dialogue and some tits. Apparently there's an unrated version with more graphic/gorey kills that sounds much more worthwhile but that's not the one I saw.

Freaks - From a couple years ago, sort of a thriller/sci-fi about a dad that keeps his little girl locked up in the house for reasons you'll find out as things progress. It's not ground breaking but it's got some interesting stuff, keeps you guessing for a bit, and it's well acted, particularly the little girl is quite good.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space - The clowns looked cool, otherwise it was dog shit.

The Marvels - Lots of fun. Great chemistry between the leads, Iman in particular always charms, good laughs, decent enough plot. Another solid MCU flick.

You are insane lol. Apart from bad acting from Mike, Debbie, and Dave, this movie is fantastic. 10/10
