    Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse

This might be a day late and a dollar short, a total 90s thread but I was talking about Mallrats and Clerks on here in different threads. I searched to see if Kevin's films had a thread and couldn't find one so here it is. Movies, TV shows, comics and collectables what are your favorites? I loved these movies and spent alot of time rewatching and trying to piece together little Easter eggs and characters through out the series when I was younger. So everything View Askew discuss here.

I've seen Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back so many times, it's one of my favorite films. It's very odd because I don't think I've seen any of the other films, except for Clerks 2.

I still adore all of the View Askew films but Kevin Smith has been pretty much useless over the last 10 years. Maybe put a little more thought into your films instead of just getting baked on a podcast and cracking yourself up about a walrus-man movie. But his old stuff still has solid replayability for me, and are some of my favorite comedies ever. I can still throw on Dogma, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Chasing Amy, etc and enjoy them thoroughly.

Clerks, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob, and even Clerks 2 are really good.

Mallrats & Chasing Amy are average at best.

Mallrats was funny the first time I watched it. Same for Chasing Amy. Clerks, Dogma, and Jay & Silent Bob are funny every time I watch them.

And I know it's not part of the View Askewniverse, but Zack and Miri Make a Porno was hilarious.

Mallrats is a strong contender for my favorite of these films. In my opinion it's the flat out funniest of the bunch and the easiest to slip into for a replay. Talk about a break out performance for Jason Lee... Brody is still one of my favorite characters.

Chasing Amy is probably my choice for the flat out best film of the bunch. I think it holds up as a tremendous romantic comedy with hilarious moments and very real moments.

So yea I definitely disagree that those two are average at best.

Chasing Amy, Dogma and Clerks II are the best of the bunch.

Love me some Kevin. He hasn't done much of note in years. Red State was ok.

I was a pretty big View Askew fan growing up. Mallrats was always my favorite for the longest time, but Dogma and Clerks get some love behind that. Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back is probably the best for pure silliness. People always gave Chasing Amy shit for not being as funny, but that movie is deeper than just the humor. I think it's still a great entry worthy of praise.

Any one here a fan of the Clerks cartoon?

Chasing Amy was critically his biggest success. Joey Adams got a Golden Globe nomination for best lead actress which would be the only major award anyone connected to his films ever got close to. If it hadn't been so well recieved his career would have been over because Mallrats bombed epic style.

    I enjoyed the Clerks cartoon.

Kevin should have gotten an Oscar nod for best screenplay for Clerks and Amy. I really love those movies. Brody in Mallrats is my favorite character out of the bunch and closest to myself during that time in my life. I haven't seen Red State, but all I heard is good things. Tusk was just a bad idea. Yoga Hosers feel like a movie in the 80s would be ok, but now it doesn't fit.

The cartoon was great. Sad it only lasted 6 episodes.

Zack and Miri was great. "Huck it. Chuck it. Football!". This still makes me laugh.

Love the whole series. I will admit to not seeing alot of new stuff Smith has done. My sister watched some and buried it to me. We have similar taste so I haven't gone out of my way to watch it yet.

He needs to stick to comedy and not this horror stuff he's suddenly interested in doing. It's like he's trying to be the new Lloyd Kauffman and doing a Troma style approach mixed with some Japanese Ichi the Killer type shit.

I enjoyed Tusk. Yoga Hosers wasn't that good at all. I saw part of Red State and enjoyed it from what I remember.

Tusk and Yoga were just too over the top for me. And that's coming from someone who loves Tokyo Gore Police haha. I just don't think Smith has the ability to produce a quality comedy horror or whatever the fuck he's trying to do to impress his 1 friend who likes that shit.

I didn't think Red State was that good.

Zack and Miri was okay. It was a fun little movie but nowhere close to his View Askewniverse flicks, and not one I'd want to re-watch. When they started catching feelings for each other it went downhill.

Chasing Amy and Clerks were my favorites of his. Not a fan of Strike Back or Dogma though.

    I would go

    Chasing Amy
    Clerks
    Clerks 2
    Mallrats
    Strike Back
    Dogma

I always found Dogma and Strikes Back as fun clusterfucks. All these name actors and cameos and shit like that, it's like an over the top action movie you just take it for what it is. Clerks and Mallrats are really the only 2 movies of Kevin Smith's that I have ever owned and could watch over and over and never lose interest. Jason Lee in Mallrats is just incredible. I remember being a young skater and when Mallrats came out my buddy was telling me Jason Lee was in it, shit I was like 12-13 but thought it was like the coolest thing in the world. Also loved the soundtrack, I had actually heard the soundtrack before seeing the movie which was weird because it has all these clips from the movie and I was laughing my ass off without knowing the actual context of some of the clips. The one thing that sticks out among many is when I remember watching that, being a young teen, and wishing I could find my own Trish the Dish lol.

Read up on the actress just to see what she's been up to and apparently she's been dating the goofball employee from Clerks 2 for like 10 years.

I liked that he is directing the CW shows. You notice he is behind the camera, because the dialogue pops more and he seems to love to have the fanboy Easter Eggs. Honestly, I hope he gets a shot a superhero film like Justice League International or Teen Titans. I think he can pull it off and it would be fun. The DCU movies need to have some fun to it like Wonder Woman.

Kevin Smith has put out so much garbage it's easy to forget that he's made movie that don't suck. Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma and Zack and Miri all range from good to great. I hate everything else he's done.

I hated Mallrats but I haven't watched it in years.

Didnt like Clerks 2 either. It was too polished to compare to Clerks.

Fucking love Dogma though. So great.

    And Chasing Amy was fantastic.

    Let's see.

    Clerks = Genius
Mallrats = Not great but funny. (Directors cut is way better)
Chasing Amy = Not Genius. But touchingly personal. Loved it.
    Dogma = Genius
Jay & Bob = Meh. It had Will Ferrell before he was in demand.
Jersey Girl = Decent. I love George Carlin.
Clerks II = Much like Amy. Not Genius. Just very beautiful.
Zack and Miri = Funny as shit. Should have made more money.
Red State = Good film. Very interesting
Tusk = Swing and a miss.
    Yoga Hosers = Foul tip.

The music group of my friends in high school were all "punk" and "ska" kids and were all OMG MALLRATS MALLRATS MALLRATS

So I watched it and was like, "Seriously?"

I should give it a rewatch since it's literally been that long but I hated it. I didn't know who Stan Lee was when I was 15 though.

Never liked Clerks. A lot of it just didn't land with me.

    I liked Mallrats when I was younger, but I don't think I'd enjoy a re-watch now.

    Dogma is great.

    J&SBSB is good silly fun.

    Everything else is pretty average.

I read a review of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back that labelled it as sexist and homophobic, and maybe it is, but man I never thought that shit when I was watching it. It's just silly fun. Didn't turn me into a gay hater or a woman hater. I'll be looking forward to this.

I know this is an old post but I'm really curious.

Why couldn't you watch it now? I know you're religious now and wasn't as much or at all earlier in your life but what would the harm be in watching the movie now?

I'm not trying to convince you to watch it or anything just curious on your head space on it.

You're very strong in your beliefs so I don't think you'd be worried it would lead you away from God. So I'm wondering what harm watching the movie would be.

He's always smoked weed. But not constantly. The turning point was on the set of Zach and Miri. He saw how Seth Rogen was able to smoke weed on set all day and still have a million and one ideas and keep all his enthusiasm and still be productive and that made HIM start trying to do the same thing.

The quality of his work went down hill right away.

    Although Red State wasn't bad.

Tusk was almost a clever idea executes really poorly. It had no idea what it wanted to be.

Consider me mildly excited for this. I love the first one, the cameos in the reboot look ample, but the trailer is not great IMO and I'm not convinces KS has another one in him this far down the road. Heck even Clerks 2 was 13 years ago. It will provide non stop fan service though so that alone will be well worth a viewing. I'm glad to see Affleck and Damon show up in the trailer.

Kevin Smith is awesome. He can be kind of a whiny bitch but that's Jersey boys for you. I can't fucking wait. Jason Mewes is IMHO one of the funniest dudes in the history of my life lol.

This looks dope. I've heard quite a few things that the trailer has left out concerning some of the cameos, I even heard a RUMOR that somehow Stan Lee is in this.

I'm certainly interested. Certainly not because of his last two films, which felt like they were made on a dare rather than with any passion. But I've always felt that his movies were good or bad depending on how truly passionate he was about them. Maybe this will be one of the ones he gives a shit about.

Tusk wasn't horrible. Most of the people I know who saw it actually liked it quite a bit, I wasn't super high on it but I'm also not into that kind of horror as much as I was 20 years ago. But I do believe he did have passion for this trilogy he's piecing together with Tusk, Yoga, and then Moose Jaws which comes out I think next year ??

Not to mention I believe he said Tusk allowed him to be able to do Clerks 3 due to how much money it made. And my buddy Mark (Mark and Me podcast) did an interview with Gill Hicks and he said that the script is done and the movie will happen. I think the delay is that they switched locations at the last minute of where they were going to be filming, but I could be wrong it's been a couple months since I listened to the interview. Mallrats 2 was another one he said was more than likely going down.

I think my favorite part of the trailer was Van Der Beek and Jason Biggs. I love their bit from the first one and them trashing the reboot should be funny.

I'm actually a lot more excited for this than my above post let on. I love this cinematic universe, and it's here where Smith is at his best. I doubt this will be an enjoyable movie for anyone besides Smith fans but for us it should be enjoyable and I expect I'll make an effort to get to the theater for it.

I loved Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but don't really enjoy any of Kevin Smith's comedy films. I'm looking forward to this based on my love for the first one. I wonder if Will Ferrell will appear, he's one of the funniest characters from Strike Back.

    You're right.

I did a little digging and Kevin Smith did an interview in May of last year (which was a little after the Brian O'Hallaran interview my buddy Mark did) saying that they had the budget, they had the script but Jeff Anderson didn't want to do it. So if you can't have Randall, it's pretty much pointless is what KS said.

Definatley no Clerks without Randall. Randall is what first drew me in and, unfortunately, I think he rubbed off on me a bit when it comes to my customer service.

"Some guy came into the store refusing to pay late fees. Said the store was closed for two hours yesterday. I tore up his membership."

"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers."

I'm excited. Trailer looks great. The only thing I didn't like about was how old it made me feel. Biggs and Van Der Beek made me pop and Jason Mewes is always fucking funny. Also looking forward to Method Man and Redman. Kevin will definatley be getting my cash, even if I have to sneak out to a late showing.

Carlin has passed away back in 08. My dad's favorite comedian, I used to watch Carlin's specials with him. My father-in-law is a dead ringer for Carlin. Although I don't think he liked it when I brought that fact up.

Jeff Anderson is down to do it but he wants his pay guaranteed. He didn't like that he was given a contract for X amount of dollars on Clerks II that he never received because technically the movie didn't hit whatever marks were necessary for him to get full pay.

Although some think this is a smokescreen. He's very proud of the first two movies and may be hesitant to make one that would ruin their reputation.

Ok that makes sense why the interview I read from Kevin Smith from May 2018 had some comment about certain things happening that kind of made it even more difficult to get him to come back around.

I think Smith is someone who can be really cool but also a fucking prick. Like I could see him having a God-complex.

It's too bad. While I have no idea what the Clerks 3 script was like, I think it's a more interesting plot than the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. In Clerks 2 it felt like they were a little old to be cashiers, but that was basically the point and it ended with them moving on to become owners of the QuikStop. In the third one, they could be dealing with their own employees and the financial crunch of owning a small business, Dante trying to attract customers so he can pay his mortgage etc, with them also having to serve as the store clerks themselves part of the time, Dante could have kids with Rosario and Randall could be giving him fucked up parenting advice, Randall could also finally be the one with a love interest/girlfriend. There's a lot they could do there.

The only tidbit Brian O'Halloran gave my buddy Mark about the plot was pretty much this was going to be the focal point. He didn't flat out say Randall's name but he did say that it was going to be about one of the guys finally having a "love of their life" so to speak. And since Dante's always had that aspect of the duo on lock, one has to assume he was talking about Randall.

One has to remember that Jeff Anderson isn't a normal actor. He was super tight with Kevin Smith (A lot of people don't know Jay and Silent Bob originally were going to be Jeff and Kevin, not Jason Mewes and Kevin) and that's how he wound up where he is. Not to mention if he was still a little bitter about the money I could see that being a situation where if he's going out of his way to do something he's not really into, and he's not being taken care of, why do a 3rd when they were already pushing it with a 2nd one?

I know money is important to him too. I mean I don't think he's an ass about it I just think he's principled about getting paid fairly. He wasn't in Mallrats or Chasing Amy because he thought he and the other actors didn't get enough money from Kevin when Miramax bought Clerks for 200k. Something that Kevin admits was true.

I'm going to shamelessly plug my buddy Mark's podcast "Mark and Me" on all platforms. He has done interviews with Kevin Smith (his very first interview for his podcast) Jason Mewes, Brian O'Halloran, and Marilyn Ghigliotti.

Clerks 3 is back on, for now.

3 CLERKS! Thanks to the good folks at @leeloomultiprops, I got to see Randal! #JeffAnderson, @jaymewes, and I spent Saturday signing stuff and catching up, seeing so much movie merch that’s been made over the last 25 years (hit the Leloo site for sweet signed skateboards)! But even better than that? We talked about making a movie together. It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning - a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey. It’ll be a movie that stars Jeff and @briancohalloran, with me and Jay in supporting roles. And it’ll be a movie called CLERKS III! To be great is to go on. To go on is to go far. To go far is to return. And we’re all gonna return to the scene of the crime! This won’t be the old script we almost made a few years back: this is a completely new screenplay that I just started writing last night! And so far, it’s like a dream come true! After mending fences with @benaffleck earlier this year, I was hoping for a chance to do the same with Jeff - so huge thanks to Leeloo Multiprops for getting us all in the same room. But the biggest thanks ever go to Jeff, for being receptive to the idea at all. This means I’m gonna get to play with my two favorite inaction figures again: Dante & Randal! Two weeks from the debut of @jayandsilentbob Reboot (on @fathomevents screens 10/15 & 10/17, link in my bio), I’m ecstatic to announce our imminent return to Quick Stop! So I assure you: we’re open! #KevinSmith #clerks3 #jaymewes #jayandsilentbob #danteandrandal #quickstop #leeloomultiprops #indiefilm #clerks

They had to get Jeff in the mix because IMHO he was really the only good thing about Clerks 2 and he's the best part about Clerks 1. TBH, not even sure I care about Clerks 3. I'll definitely check it out if it comes to fruition.

I did hear/read somewhere, I think a podcast that had Bryan talking about how the originally, locked in a vault script centered around Randall falling in love. Could be hilarious, that guy in general is fucking funny in these movies so I'm sure he'd make it work.

I sort of feel like Kevin Smith actually does about 50% of what he announces. So, we'll see I guess.

I also sort of feel like at 34, I've completely outgrown the VA stuff.

outgrown as in you don't enjoy the old movies anymore? blasphemy. the question is whether Smith can still add to that universe in a successful way and we're about to find out with the Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. Personally, I think the trailer kinda sucks so maybe we're on the same page in expecting it to suck. but that's not a matter of outgrowing it, it's a question of whether Smith can deliver the goods anymore as a writer/director. Clerks 2 was 12 years ago, but IMO he did successfully add to the well with that one. it was probably the worst film of the VA universe, but still a good addition. I am skeptical that Reboot will be a good addition but hoping for the best.

as I said earlier in here, Clerks 3 at least has some good meat on the bone from a character/plot perspective, and I'd say that makes it easier to write, while Jay and Silent Bob is a slapsticky farce that relies entirely on the jokes landing.

I'm being objective. Or trying. Mallrats was what got me into his movies in the first place.

But objectively it's a really poorly made movie full of bad acting and plot holes.

Clerks 2 is on your list......above the original.......but Mallrats is the poorly made movie with bad acting and plot holes?

Eh, you thought The Last Boyscout was Bruce Willis' best action movie, over Die Hard. And you're a fan of Rancid. lol.

Just busting your balls but damn dude, Mallrats is the fucking shit. And Clerks 2 fucking SUUUUUUUCKS.

You'd be pretty alone on that one bro. Clerks 2 got a standing ovation at Cannes. Meanwhile Mallrats got fucking destroyed by critics.

The main problem with Mallrats really has to do with the edit. When they cut out the first 45 minutes (available on the 10th anniversary dvd) it really made the movie make no sense. Brodie tells TS how "Shawn Hardle" is giving everyone the inside scoop on his break up. Meanwhile in the final edit Brodie never had a chance to talk to anyone but TS and Renee and we see all those conversations. And the guy that freaks out and points at TS on the way to the mall and looks like he's seen a murder and shouts "aren't you the guy that broke up with Brandie Svening?" The overdub is awful and hilarious.

The problem being of course that TS got broke up with the night before when he was accused of trying to assasinate the governor. But all of that is cut out.

And Jeremy London is goddamn awful. Too bad this movie didn't featherfurthermumblemumble his own career.

I bet if Kevin made this exact same movie now it would be leagues better. I mean the first Jay and Bob pretty much shows us that.

But Clerks 2? Man if you can't dig that movie then you got no soul

    No soul I say.

Mallrats would probably be my #1 favorite Kevin Smith movie. I'd be interested in seeing that extra 45 minutes but I think the movie is great as released.

I mean yes, Dogma and Chasing Amy are clearly better plots, they're more ambitious and he pulled them both off wonderfully. But neither is as funny as Mallrats. Mallrats has so many laugh out loud hysterical moments that it's truly one of my favorite comedies ever (top 5).

I'm not going to converse forever about Clerks 2 being good or being a better made movie than Mallrats. It just is. It's not really a debate to be had.

And yeah Mallrats is funny as fuck. It's a really funny very poorly made movie. The sort of thing an amazing young writer makes the first time a big studio gives him a ton of money and then the studio sees it and realizes the "film school dropout" moniker wasn't just a cute selling point for Clerks. It was the truth and Smith had a lot to learn about making real movies where the camera has to actually move and shit.

And he learned quick. He never made anything that looked that bad ever again.

Here's an interesting point to be made about Smith's films though.

When Clerks came out, and you can go back and read the old reviews, so many people bought into the artistic merit of the film based on it being black and white. Like Kevin was really trying to say something about our consumer driven world man. When in reality black and white was just cheaper and easier not to fuck up.

Subsequently what we've seen from Kevin is that he LOVES color. His movies are so bright and colorful they're damn near cartoons. Use of bright colors has almost become his hallmark. As much as that single two shot is.

Chasing Amy is dogshit. Dogma is funny, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again. The rest are great though. Mallrats is my favorite, other than Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. They will never top that.

Chasing Amy is great. The only part I critique is when Silent Bob speaks and he tells Ben Affleck how he went through the EXACT same scenario Ben is going through, and how he reacted the exact same way Ben did. It was too on the nose. In his defense, Kevin's delivery of that scene is probably his best in any of his movies. "Ever since then I've been chasing Amy, so to speak." Great delivery as an actor, but the writing irks me in how he describes the same scenario as the movie itself almost to a T.

Saying it sucks is harsh because I'm just not a fan of that kind of movie. A lot of people liked Jersey Girl as well. I have a particular taste when it comes to Kevin Smith movies. Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, those types of movies where the humor is crude but clever and the characters are almost borderline absurd but somehow relatable.

I wasn't even a fan of Tusk. I've to see Yoga Hoosiers or whatever the fuck it's called. And as shitty as people say it was, I thought Daredevil was pretty good at the time. Comparing it to the Netflix show isn't fair lol. But he had some good episodes for the CW shows like The Flash.

    The Affleck movie?

    Kevin didn't do that one.

Yoga Hosers is cute. His kid and Johnny Depp's daughter are actually pretty good in it. But it's dumb as hell. Youd probably love it homie.

Kevin Smith most certainly wrote and directed JERSEY GIRL. You're thinking GIGLI.

Ahhh my bad. I thought you were talking about Jersey Girl, because a lot of peeps confuse it with "Gigli" since both Afflectk and J-Lo are in both movies. I think I was confused by the fact Smith did a Daredevil comic. For some reason I have this piece in my head where he was at one point going to do the Daredevil movie, could for sure be wrong.

Sounds like something he'd have done then.

I'm glad he saying he and Ben are buds again. I know he had a quote out there not too long ago about Jennifer Garner hating him and that's why he and Ben no longer spoke.

Yeah there's a couple stories out there. Honestly, I think the beef is exaggerated on the Smith side of things and I'd be Affleck doesn't even think about it that deep. Smith has always, to me, been that guy who really, really, really wants to be part of the Hollywood elite but never made it in that club. So he'll say things like "Ben's wife must hate me so that's why"

He also seems like the kind of guy that expects his friendships to last forever. Just things he's said over the years.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Affleck has had numerous people telling him to distance himself from the snootchie bootchies guy. No matter what he thinks he might owe Kevin.

And he doesn't really owe Kevin Smith anything. Truth is, Dazed and Confused is what put Affleck on the map for me. Him being the cocky douche O'Bannon, then he does Mallrats as essentially a 90's version of that same character. Not to say those Smith movies didn't help, they most certainly did. But that was just one aspect of Affleck's rise.

Smith probably thought they'd be scratching each other's backs for eternity. He probably wanted Ben to be part of something Ben turned down, or Kevin wanted to be part of something with Ben that was huge that didn't happen.

Chasing Amy is what apparently helped his career out the most. Due to some Hollywood logic about never casting leading men as tall as he is. It was some interview or another where Ben was saying he was flat out told on numerous occasions that he was too big to be a leading man. He could only ever play the heavy. Then Kevin made him the leading man in Amy and then based on that he got the part in Armageddon and that got the ball rolling for him.

Or at least that's how he feels.

I'm pretty sure Dazed and Confused also tanked.

Which it shouldnt have because that motherfucker has everyone in it. Ben, Joey Adams, Parker Posey, Beck's weird scientology wife, Adam Goldberg, Stamets from Stark Trek Discovery, the girl that played Connie Conehead, Jason "Apparently better than his twin" London etc.

I have the criterion special edition of that dvd and it's hilarious because it has the same producer as Mallrats. Jim Jax I think his name is. And he's all over "the making of" doc trying to get less cursing in the movie. Which is apparently his thing. He wanted Mallrats to be PG13. I also found out he's the guy that got all those "Gall Dern Motherhumpers" overdubbed into Tremors.

And he wasn't even the leading man in Armageddon, or Good Will Hunting-which came out BEFORE Armageddon so I have to honestly give the nod to that movie helping him get into bigger roles. IDK about that too tall nonsense. Clint Eastwood is fucking tall and he's never played 2nd fiddle to anyone in like 50 years. Hollywood people always have an excuse lol.

Dazed and Confused made money (about 2 mill over budget but still lol) but it wasn't meant to be a blockbuster. And it's a fucking classic. I'm just saying it wasn't exactly a stretch for Ben to play O'Bannon and then the dick from Fashionably Male 2 years later lol. Shit wasn't he also a dick before those movies in School Ties? Racist fuck!

Dazed had all those big names, but none of them were stars at the time, and most of them never went on to be big big names other than ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT Matthew and Affleck. Everyone else, pretty B-level status. Thankfully Mitch never amounted to much, pinching his fucking nose every 2 seconds.

Anyway lol....Smith and Affleck are solid together, I can't really shit on too many of the movies they've done together as most of them are great. I just think that Kevin Smith is a typical comic book nerd always whining about everything not being about him while pretending he doesn't want everything to be about him. I mean, this is the guy who flipped out about the whole 2-seat fiasco because he was in fact a fat sloppy bitch.

Who knew the guy playing a 70's pedophile would go on to be one of the most in demand actors of the last 20 years? Maybe I'm reaching when I say "most in demand" but from a female POV I can't be wrong, can I? lol

Details on Clerks 3: She Clerks Hard for the Money*

"Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death, and his life has meant nothing, there's nobody to memoralize him, he has no family or anything like that," Smith explained. "And in the recovery, while under fentanyl, he comes to the conclusion at mid-life, having almost died, having worked in a movie store his whole life and watched other people’s movies, he tells Dante, I think we need to make a movie. So Dante and Randal make 'Clerks.' That's the story of Clerks 3."

Clerks was released in 1994 as Smith's feature-length directorial debut. The plot was based around his life in his 20s; whereas the 2006 sequel went on to reflect his 30s. Following a similar pattern, the third film was supposed to represent Smith's 40s through to death, but after a live reading of the script this past summer, he decided that the story was too much of a tearjerker.

"That was a movie that was written by a guy who was obsessed with middle-aged and dying, and it was all about death," he said about the original script for Clerks 3. "And that was before I almost died. Then I almost died, and now I don't really want to talk about that s***. I've been too close. Now I just want to do life-affirming things. The tone is going to shift completely.

"I owe those guys, those characters, Dante and Randal, a lot more than the kind of doom and gloom I was about to put them through. I loved that script, and I loved reading it, but there wasn't a dry eye in the house for the last 15 pages.

Smith is currently working on the new script, which will see the return of original cast members Jason Mewes, Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson, who, for some portion of the film, may appear in black and white as opposed to colour to replicate the style of 1994's Clerks for the movie-within-a-movie scenes."

It'll be cool, I hope. I wish my daughter didn't watch the resurrected 90210 show because part of me is thinking about how this is a similar premise but instead of the fictional 90210 characters doing a movie, it's a fictional version of the real life actors putting together the reboot of 90210. And the 10 minutes I saw of it, made me want to hang myself from a tall building by the balls lol.

With all of that said.....Clerks 3 should hopefully be better than the clusterfuck of Clerks 2.
