TMNT in the arcade was soooo much fun. When it came out for the NES as TMNT II: Arcade Edition I was so happy.

It was the shit. I like the first one on NES, but when they smartened up and gave us the arcade style, super fresh.

We can't forget about X-Men. I know for a fact I spent hours of my life playing that game.

I think I have the C128 downstairs somewhere. No idea if any of the components still work or not. Now that we've brought Commodore into the conversation, there's one that has been bugging me. I can't for the life of me think of the game, but I'm remembering it that there's something about Trafalgar Square. I've searched Youtube and done many Google searches and can't find shit. Any guesses what this game might be? I probably last played it ten years back or so but don't have much more information than that.

Not sure if we're talking about the same TMNT game but I remember the side scrolling Streets of Rage style one, which had those huge cabinets with four player control setups. I rarely got to play it as there werent any machines for it locally (I usually always came across it outside the city).

I think the game I spent the most at an arcade machine in one sitting was WWF WrestleFest. It had a Royal Rumble mode where you can be eliminated via the top rope or pinfall. And of course its always hard as fuck as the owners always set their games to the hardest difficulty when the option's available (not sure if WrestleFest had it done but it sure felt like it). Every credit you inserted would replenish your health, and I think I did it about 6 times to finally win the Rumble match. Its still the one and only game I've ever completed at an arcade.

Yep we're talking about the same game homeboy, so fun!

And yeah, WrestleFest, holy shit man we spent a lot of money and time playing that one. I can literally tell you right now the top games were always WWF, Mortal Kombat, Ninja Turtles, X-Men. Man, when Mortal Kombat II dropped, that was like getting your first blowjob and it was actually GOOD lol. MK3 was another mega hit.

I would like to go full blown Billy Mitchell and not get world record scores but dedicate my life to beating every legendary game for NES. Legend of Zelda 1 and 2, the first TMNT game, Super Mario Bros 1 is the only one of the NES Mario games I've never conquered, Metroid, Tetris.

That was my very first issue of Nintendo Power once I subscribed. I collected them for years and years.

Thats probably the hardest dungeon, with all those damn switches, and all the doors and passages getting locked out because of them. I've completed the game multiple times and every time I get past it, its by accident. I never actually know the correct method of getting through it. I just try everything and eventually something works.

You just have to learn the proper way to warp so you miss all of world 7. Then know your way through the final castle maze. I couldn't recite it to you now if I tried but my eyes and fingers still know it by heart I'm sure.

Now if we're talking beating it stage by stage, I haven't done that since I was a little kid. And as I recall it's a fucking bitch.

    Is it middle, bottom, top?

And the cool kids don't use warp zones.

    I love NBA Jam.

To this day I still give it a bash every couple of weeks on the Retropie.

It's world 8. Like wardy said, those damn Hammer Bros. Plus all the ridiculous tiny ledges you have to jump on. Plus this being 1986 and video game physics not being quite what they are now...

I don't know. I guess because it was the first. No Mercy really is just the perfected version of 2000.

My N64 collection vanished over the years and I'm replacing it. I'll get No Mercy later.

8-1, 8-2 and most of 8-3 I've developed a bit of muscle memory but then you get 3 Hammer guys in a row and it's just solid.

I haven't used warp zones. I suppose you would've used them on the original NES version in lieu of a save feature because I would've given up long ago if I had to start from 1-1 every time I turned it on.

Oh yeah I'm talking NES. That save feature shit is cheating lol. And when I say SMB3 is hard I mean on the NES.

Well I was nearly very upset. WM 2000 didn't want to work. Looked at it and it was dirty as fuck. Little alcohol and a q tip and it started right up.

That's part of the reason why SMB1 and 3 are much harder than World. In saying that, they're just hard games regardless. I can complete Sonic 1 and 2 on the Mega Drive easily and you can't save them either.

From what I understand, mechanics were a bit different. Speed and timing was changed in a way that people didn't like as much as WM2000.

I personally never really noticed, and love both games.

WM2000 ran faster with 4 players, had custom championship belts, some would argue better BGM music, the gangrel entrance, and the Highway to Hell SCSA storyline.

It runs a little smoother than No Mercy (especially with more characters on screen) and is less broken. Vice broke it down for me years ago and his explanation was better than mine but that's the biggest thing I can remember.

Nostalgia might play a part, too. WrestleMania 2000 was full-on attitude era WWF and while wrestling was still hot when No Mercy was set it was slowly starting to fizzle.

Does anyone remember a hologram fighting game at the arcade? Holosseum might be what I'm thinking of but looking at the game I'm not 100% sure.

The HD remake had the potential to be absolutely amazing. Wide-screen support. 1080p/60. Redrawn sprites in the true spirit of the original. The mechanics. 4 player co-op. Extra levels. Extra modes

Dang, can't believe I never knew about this "re-shelled" version. Sucks that I'm not finding anything about it being on PS4, just XBox 360 and PS3.

Ah man that Simpsons game was the best.

Anyone else have a 'banned list' of beat em up characters when playing with their mates? E. Honda, Chun Li, Blanka (SF2), Law (Tekken 2) and Eddie were all banned for us, too easy to button bash your way to victory.

    - - - Updated - - -

My first console was a Commodore 64. I had a game called Sheep Attack and a game where you were a diver jumping into pools of decreasing size. The last one was a thimble IIRC.

My cousin had the diving game, I'm sure it was part of a circus game where you also had to swing on a trapeze and juggle etc. I seem to remember that game being bundled with Flimbo's Quest which was a platformer/shooter. I can still hear that fucking music 25 years later.

The only thing on the banned list for us was Oddjob in Goldeneye. Anything in beat em ups was fair game. As cheap as the Eddies and E Honda's were, most of our group of friends knew how to counter them with relative ease.

Fuck yes. My youngest brother would always want to be odd job and just murder us for hours.

Eventually a rule had to be made.

I went to a boy's house to play Pro Ev 5 and you weren't allowed to hit penalties down the middle. You needed to have somebody else watching you to make sure otherwise you forfeited the match.

Anybody losing to a button basher in SF2 is shite at SF2. Just a fundamental grasp of Ken or Ryu would put that tactic to bed.

C64 was my first too. Hours I spent on Dizzy, Chuckie Egg and Hunchback 1 and 2.

I'm intrigued by this Commodore 64 mini I've seen on Amazon recently. I supposedly had a 128 long ago but have not yet found it.

Back on the subject though, a friend of mine booted up Revenge the other week and noticed that the game didn't have any sort of tournament mode in it, World Tour had a round-robin tournament, No Mercy had King of the Ring as well... I don't know if people on here are high on tournaments, but it could've made Revenge that better, me and my pal always enjoyed chasing after the tag team titles in each of the games, it gave you something to kill time with.

WM2000's story mode was brutal. You had to wrestle every Raw, Heat and PPV for a year and if you had the title going into Mania, Vince would always come out and take it off you meaning you had to lose some matches in order for you to not be champ and be eligible for the Rumble. Took me ages to unlock HBK.

Starting up Parasite Eve now. I've gone through my PS1 games I've stockpiled the last couple years and may sell off a few that I might not get around to. Pretty sure I'll try to play through Legend of Legaia, but offload Alundra and Wild Arms 2. What's y'all's thoughts on the Resident Evil 2 remake? I enjoyed RE7, but never played the early games since I preferred playing Silent Hill 1-3.

Nope. SF2 was serious business with my family and friends. Button mashers don't get very far.

In fact, when I'm playing as Ryu or Ken against Honda, Zangeif or anyone else that doesn't throw missiles, its almost a guaranteed "PERFECT"

Super Mario World replay. 96☆ Challenge

    -------------------

    On to Donut Plains!

    -Donut Plains 1- (red)

Red dot level. So two ways to beat it. The basic way is easy. This appears to be the first level with the cape feather and it's easy to just fly right through the whole thing. The second exit looks like you need the green dotted blocks to achieve and I don't have the green switch palace yet.

Unless you are super badass with the feather cape and you know how to fly right up to the key like I am. This opens up Donut Secret 1. But I want the green switch palace first.

    -Donut Plains 2- (red)

I love this level btw. The forced scrolling levels in this game are my favorite. The basic exit is easy. Just don't get squashed by the moving yellow...things. That opens up Donut Ghost House.

There is also a secret exit with kind of a fake out here I now remember. I went up this pipe halfway through the level. You see a totally different exit gate and you can cross through it but it doesn't open up any new area. The real extra exit is hidden up above that. You can fly up or use Yoshi and a blue shell or use a hidden vine block. But this is how I get the Green Switch Palace.

    -Green Switch Palace-

    Yay green blocks.

    -Donut Secret 1- (red)

First exit was easy. Opened up the path to Donut Ghost House. So that can be a path around DP 2 but I don't know why you'd want to skip that easy level. Plus you'd skip the green switch.

The advanced exit involved taking a p-block over to a block barrier that I could turn to coins to grab the key for the keyhole. Not super hard now but I distinctly remember hating this level as a kid.

    -Donut Secret House-

Two exits here. One involving a blue door that you have to hit a p-block to see. This opened up the little pipe you can use to go to Donut Secret 2 and bypass Donut Ghost House.

Which again is stupid becauae that means skipping the awesome "secret area".

Cool little thing I noticed. This ghost house actually forced you to learn that p-blocks turn bricks to coins and vice versa by putting a big boo in your way at the very start who can only be beaten by getting the spring jump deal by using a p-block.

The second exit involved finding a vine block above a door that you can only reach with a p-block. It fooled me at first and I went into the door and it took me nowhere.

This opens up star road but I'll door that last.

    -Donut Secret 2- (yellow)

This is an ice level so I fucking hate it. Even if it's not that hard.

    -Donut Ghost House-

You'll think the exit is reached by hitting the p-block and going in the blue door but it's not. I had to leave that room and come back a second time to change the p-block block into a vine block to get out and open up DP 3.

The secret exit is located by flying up across the whole entrance room. So now I have to go get a feather from DP1.

    -Donut Plains 3- (yellow)

You can use a Yoshi and a blue shell to fly here but it just goes slower. Just fly across the whole level with a cape. Too easy once you know the trick.

    -Donut Plains 4- (yellow)

Ditto. I just caped right through it.

    -Morton's Castle-

Easy level but God the music is so good. Such atmosphere.

That's it! Donut Plains is done. On to the Vanilla Dome.

Finally completed SMB1. I'm now back to Link's Awakening which I've been playing on and off for years and never completed. Dunno about anyone else but I find the old Zelda's absolutely solid. I got stuck about halfway through Link to the Past as well before giving it to a friend of a friend by mistake. I had 2 copies for some reason and drunkenly gave him the wrong one. Couldn't be arsed starting again. I think I'll eventually get the Gameboy Advance version so I can play it at work.

I've been through about 3/4 of Link's Awakening on two separate occasions where my save file just randomly deleted. Trying to find the will to do it all over again.
I completed it like over 15 years ago back in the day but I basically cheated through the whole thing (that glitch where you bring up the map just as you transition to another screen, which makes you teleport across the map), so I cant really remember any of it or the ending.

Re-did A Link To The Past about a year or so ago and absolutely loved it. Feel like about two thirds of the games you play from earlier in life should just be left there, but then there are games that are so beautiful in their simplicity and gameplay that they shit on a lot of things nowadays. There's a brilliant bit in A Link To The Past which I never understood how to do as a kid in one of the final levels and only last year worked it out - there's a gap between two floors which takes you to a sideroom (not necessary to complete the dungeon), and the only way to clear it is to face a block directly opposite the gap and speed run at it, knocking yourself backwards over the gap. Absolute genius.

Super Metroid on the SNES was like that too. I feel like with games these days, the difficulty comes down to testing your button reflexes and your perseverance with certain obstacles. Games like Link to the Past and Super Metroid on the other hand involved you having to think about the situation and arrive at that satisfying eureka moment, which you rarely experience these days.

Super Mario Land arrived today from CEX. I heard they sometimes reproduce stickers and boxes but this cartridge must be at least 25 years old and is in pristine condition. I don't think I've ever seen a Gameboy game looking this new in my life. Or could the cart be a reproduction as well?

Legend of Legaia was my shit. One of the coolest battle systems for a JRPG. And it was always so satisfying seeing the Ra-Seru growing as you progressed through the game. And that soundtrack!

I really want to go back and beat that game some time.

I played Kid Icarus over the weekend. Not a big fan but I'm actually good at it thanks to the WiiU's NES Remix 1 and 2, which btw is worth every dime if you're into a fun way of playing old school NES games.

I'll be honest, when I bought it I didn't realize it wasn't the full games. I just thought they updated them, like Super Mario All-Stars for example. So on one hand I was a little pissed off but it was $20 brand new so I couldn't complain too much. Plus, I found that this is actually better because I'm not fucking Steve Weibe or Billy Mitchell, I'm not making it that far in Donkey Kong that's for damn sure.

Silent Hill 3 on PS2, one I've been dying to add to my collection for years, for whatever reason, it just never made it to my shelf. Also picked up Metal Arms and Vexx for good old platforming.

2nd pic doesnt work. I've had a couple of repro carts in the past. On the front you can sometimes tell by the font of the "Nintendo GAME BOY" logo looking slightly different. Of course the only sure way of knowing is unscrewing the shell and looking at the circuit board inside. Those always look way different from what a normal Gameboy game should look like. And the legit ones have a DMG model number on them.

Maybe you got lucky and it could very well be a legit cart. I bought a Chrono Trigger cart off eBay for about £40 many years ago. When I got it, it was in absolute mint condition. The cart literally looked as if it just came in straight from the factory or something. The box (whilst opened) didnt have a mark or scratch, it had all the booklets and stuff, the cart had the dust cover on the bottom, and neatly tucked away in a plastic bag inside the box itself. The seller just didn't know they probably could've got 5 times the value it was sold for.

a lot of repro's wont even have the nintendo game boy branding inside that lip, it'll just be smooth. if the cover sticker is skewed from center is also a potential sign.

The soundtrack is incredible. We used some of the instrumentals for fun in a rap group I was in years ago.

    I don't know.

I've tried to play it through a few times and it's, you know, alright. But not much better than that.

It's fun, easy gameplay and battle system and there's a few emotional scenes. What I will say is a big downfall as that it becomes easier once you obtain magic. Spiky Tiger early on at the witch's castle is by far the hardest boss in this game. You've only got a few weapons, he's quick as lightning and the space to fight in is pretty tight and he can jump to podiums.

Plus Mech Rider all three forms of him is one of the stupidest bosses ever in the history of video games. The first two are basically the same except the second has a Wave Cannon attack and it's still pish easy. The third one has far more HP but casts Wall at the start of the battle then Speed Up on himself forgetting he cases Wall so it just bounces onto the party!

I can't properly judge on Secret of Mana because I've probably only put a couple hours into it, but I'll say I love the art style and presentation. It's definitely made me want to give the full game a go once I have the time.

Honestly I kind of thought Secret of Mana was overrated. And Secret of Evermore is better, anyway. The soundtrack is incredible, and co-op is great if you have people to play it with, but everything else borders on mediocre. I always dreamed of a Director's Cut someday, so we can see Secret of Mana's potential, but we don't even know if Square Enix has all that cut stuff archived or, even if they did have it, are they willing to remake it?

Have you seen Gaming Historian's presentation on it? If not you should definitely check it out. As a matter of fact all his stuff is good. I might post more videos later when I'm on a computer.

I rememeber beating SML for the first time and being really psyched about it. The contols were definitely way different than classic Mario play control and that made it hard to play at first but then I got the hang of it. Final boss battle was a tad too easy but I got a real feeling of accomplishment from that. I hadn't beaten many games to completion back then.

Also, I gave in and checked a walk-through for a bit I was stuck at for ages in Link's Awakening. Turns out the thing I had missed was right under my nose. Disgusted with myself.

I feel like this is the case every time I cave in and use a walkthrough. It never feels any better.
