If you can find something like that for sale that comes pre-loaded with a fuckton of roms and doesn't require any setup - let me know.

I bought a Raspberry Pi (retropie) console, in a NES style case with SNES style controllers.

Comes preloaded with the emulators and Kodi.

There's a little bit (but not much) set up required and you'll have to sort the Roms out yourself but its honestly very quick and the tutorials make it a piece of piss, even for a technodunce like myself.

I subscribe to Netflix (US and AU), Hulu, HBO Now, Stan and probably other shit I've forgotten about, an I've been watching stuff on Kodi that isn't on any of those streaming services (Beavis and Butthead for instance).

Best $130 I've spent in ages. Let me know if you want the link to the store I purchased from and I'll PM you.

But I like having a nice looking console with loads of games on it. $130 is a steal IMO.

I got the raspberry pi a year ago. I hooked up my PS4 controller to it because the SNES controllers were a bit laggy in how quickly they responded to button pushing. It came preloaded with every Atari, NES,SNES, Gameboy, Sega, Gameboy Color, NDS, NeoGeo & Sega CD game that has been released, as well as many N64 & PS1 games. It's a bit tedious playing N64 games with a PS4 controller, but other then that no problems.

If you want complete ROM sets, as in every game released for the NES for every country do a search for "GoodNES" or "GoodSNES." They'll typically have a number on the end of the file name as well. Additionally the Pi 3 still runs some N64 games poorly, not to mention most Dreamcast games. GameCube is out of the question right now on the Pi and likely will be for a while.

I have a SNES emulator on my phone which syncs up to a controller...fuck me lads, Super Mario Kart is still BRILLIANT. Not just "this is shit compared to nowadays but the feelings of nostalgia make me happy" - it's still really good fun.

It's arguably the best Mario Kart for me because it doesn't use the 'rubber band' gameplay to help you catch up if you're shite. You can lap or be lapped by the computer controlled characters which rarely happens in the other games.

I haven't played it in years but I do recall the N64 version being the same way. Once you got good you could just lap everyone and 2nd place wound up so far behind you that it didn't matter.

I think the "rubber band" cpu play started with Mario Kart Double Dash. But even then if you got good enough you could learn to actually dodge blue shells and still lap everyone no matter how many the cpu characters amazingly had.

Then by the time Mario Kart DS came out it was totally fucked. No matter how perfectly you played there would always be someone right up your ass as you crossed the finish line. Pretty much all subsequent games have had the same issue. Although I don't think any were as bad as the first DS version.

I love Mario Kart but I've always felt the system where the further back you were the better items you got was a shoddy way to help shitty players.

You can say that for so many Nintendo titles.

I played Super Mario World all the way through about 6 months ago. Still an absolutely brilliant game, nearly 30 years on.

Lol my 8 year old just discovered Mario Kart with his new Switch and told me the same thing. He was like "why should you get a reward for being bad at the game?.

I had no explanation to give him except reminding him that if he was ever getting beat and was in last place he would be so happy with all those blue shells and lightning bolts.

I absolutely hate that. You should be able to choose whether you want it that way or with completely random items, no matter what position you're in.

I actually just played through SMW a week ago. While it was a bit easier than I remember it being, I can completely confirm this. Such a purely fun game with excellent stage design and graphics. And the soundtrack is so catchy(even if it's basically the same song stylized in different ways).

SMW is easier if you are just simply trying to beat it, but getting to 100 percent completion is the real challenge.

    This.
If you're not playing this game to unlock all 96 exits and every Yoshi coin, then you're not really playing the game.

The game would be soooooo much better if the items were completely random or better yet if there was a percentage for obtaining each item with the better ones being less common (for everyone).

You get hit with a blue turtle shell (or 2) literally every time you're in first place for any extended amount of time. It's tedious knowing it's coming at all times and being forced to be prepared to slam on the brakes at any moment so you can maybe catch 2nd and 3rd place racers in the blast.

I don't remember 3 being particularly difficult at all. SMB1 though for sure was NES hard.

If you're trying to play every level, 1 and 3 might be harder. I always remember using warps and whistles to play those games, which made them significantly shorter and easier. So I can't vouch for just how hard they were.
I think the two things that made Mario World easier was how quickly you can earn and stack up a fuck ton of 1UPs, and also how you had a fair few stages where you can use the cape to just fly the whole way through (plus there was the blue Yoshi that made it even easier once you got him).
Besides skipping the stages entirely, the difficulty of the levels were harder to cheat your way through in Mario Bros 1 and 3.

Aye, we're talking about playing every level in all 3 games. 1 and 3 have much harder levels towards the end compared to SMW IMO which makes them harder games.

World is the ultimate Mario game though.

I've never beat SMB 3 without warping through most of the game. It's two bitches and a bastard.

SMW world is fairly easy outside of the advanced Star Road levels.

I echo the sentiments that SMW is still pretty easy even if you're trying to get all the exits and Dragon Coins, because that's exactly what I did. On that note, I find the Dragon Coins pretty pointless in comparison to Red coins in later stages.

I remember the Lost Levels on Mario All-Stars seeming way harder than any of the original games.

Also my condolences to anyone unfortunate enough to play Mario Is Missing thinking it was a proper Mario game. I only borrowed it off a mate and was still heartbroken, imagine spending £40 on it.

The harder difficulty was exactly why Lost Levels never made it outside Japan on the NES (where it was called Mario Bros 2). I remember finding warp pipes in that game that actually took you BACK to previous worlds.

This applies to every kid that ever played it I'm sure.

That box art... then popping it in the NES when you get home... then "wtf is this shit"

I played through 3 again recently.

3 is much, much easier than 1 or SMW until you hit World 8.

Worlds 1 through 7 are an absolute cake walk. The difficulty jump come World 8 - especially if you're going for every level - is obscene.

I think so? Or maybe I'm thinking Mario's Time Machine. Another shit educational game that used the Mario brand to trick kids into playing it.

Super Mario World is the GOAT.

And as others have said, if you haven't got that little gold star next to your save file, you haven't really finished the game.

For ages, that little star eluded me, until I found Soda Lake.

You have to beat every level in every way you can. Red dot levels have two exits. Ghost houses as well.

Then there's completing Star Road and then beating all the bonus levels.

How would people feel about a community run through of SMW for the 96?

Anybody who wants to starting the game at roughly the same time and keeping thoughts, experiences and random shit in a thread dedicated to it.

    There's always fucking one.

Doesn't have to be SMW, could be anything which people are happy to play with a set target in mind.

I just did SM64 for all 120 stars so I can certainly comment on that one.

And I plan on starting a new SMW file tonight.

Me and some mates spent an evening trying to beat Mario 3 over the Christmas holidays on a NES mini. Couldn't do it. Spent fucking forever on that fucking pirate ship in World 8. What a bastard of a level that was.

My nephew brought his Switch to my place and challenged me to Mario Kart on that. I defeated him easily and repeatedly. Despite all the bells and whistles the gameplay essentially hasn't changed in the 20-something years since the first one. If you have mastered Super Mario Kart, you can pick up any version made since and instantly be unreal at it.

I'll have to go over them all again, but am I right in thinking aside from being a different game to all the others (literally, isn't it a re-skin of some Japanese game?) Mario 2 was very difficult?

Also, just throwing it out there - Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins on the original Game Boy was so, so bloody good.

Mario Land 2 is easily the most underappreciated game in the series for me. The first Mario Land was just a cheap version of the NES Super Mario Bros IMO, which might have turned people away from the sequel. Also the fact that it came out a few years after Super Mario World probably didn't help.

The first Mario Land was nothing at all like SMB1. It was very different (mostly thanks to not being supervised by Shigeru Miyamoto) from any other 2D Mario platformer and was extremely charming in it's own right. It was like a fever dream Mario game and I personally loved it.

Similar as in it just had the basic powerups, no map, and didnt really bring anything new to the series like pretty much every other sequel in the series did.

Except exploding Koopa shells lol. I don't understand how you can criticize it for not bringing anything new to the series (an OG Gameboy game released in 1989 mind) when it's really nothing like the rest of the series. I admittedly never played SML2 but based on videos I've seen it basically reverted back to the traditional Mario style and didn't seem to bring anything new to the series itself, other than the debut of Wario I suppose.

Mario Land 2 had a unique powerup that's not in any other game, multiple unique enemies, unique worlds or zones, the progression is very non-linear (more so than Super Mario World), you have the new spin jump move (although its not the first to use it).
The game in general expands on the basic Mario formula in the same way that Mario Bros 3 and Mario World did, over Mario Bros 1 and Mario Land 1.
Not saying Mario Land 1 is a bad game, but it hardly expands on the first release from the NES.

I'm up for playing through SMW. I'm sitting here saying how easy it is when I don't think I ever got the gold star.

We should make a general retro gaming thread for all this shit.

Literally just googled Soda Lake and realised this was also the last thing holding me and my mates back from getting the 96. There were no guides or anything back then, and the only reason we got it was thanks to the dude we called at the Nintendo Helpline number from the back of their magazine.

There were plenty of guides, yeah. You got one with pretty much every Gamesmaster magazine for a while and the occasional one with the Nintendo magazine.

I actually meant for Mario World, specifically one that told you how to get all 96 exits. None of us could find one for it anywhere. In the end we called up Nintendo from a public phone booth and the dude on the other end told us.

SML2 was released after SMW. It didn't bring anything brand new to the table other than new enemies, though if we're counting that as a criterion SML introduced tons of crazy enemies. Also SMB3 is the game that really introduced unique zones.

I meant unique zones as it you had a "space" zone, a "pumpkin" zone, a "Mario" zone where you're inside a huge mechanical Mario. As far as I'm aware, we never saw anything like those in any of the 2D games even after SML's release.
Besides, why you comparing it to SMW? No one's gonna deny SMW is the superior game. I'm saying Mario Land was like a cheap Mario Bros 1 or that SML barely expand on the original NES classic. SML has one basic Egyptian theme throughout the whole game, and a straight forward linear progression like SMB1. If you liked the game then fair enough. I'm not saying its a bad game. Its just that as a gaming experience it doesnt give you much more than what SMB1 already did.
Mario Land 1 to Mario Land 2 was like the kind of jump you got from Mario Bros 1 to Mario Bros 3. That's all I'm trying to say.

The comparison was in response to your claim that SML2 brought much to the table when it was really done previously by both SMW and SMB3. 3 had Grass World, Desert World, Giant World etc and while they aren't called "zones" it is the exact same premise minus taking place inside a mechanical Mario (which hardly should be considered bringing something new to the series).

Ok, maybe it can't claim to be the first in every idea. But it still gave you something. The point I'm trying to make is that the jump from SMB1 to SML is relatively small. As a gaming experience it doesnt really offer much more. No new powerups, or significant changes to gameplay mechanics or whatever. But the jump from either SMB1 and SML1 to SML2 is more significant.
Sounds like you're just annoyed that I called SML1 a cheap version of SMB1. To me SML1 felt like Nintendo's attempt at down porting SMB1 (or at least a version of Mario) to the handheld. While you could argue that SML2 was a scaled down version of either SMB3 or SMW, its still a scaled down version of a far greater game.

Do you realize how technically limited the original Game Boy was and how simple it's games were in 1989? SML was great for it's time and it didn't feel like a rehash of SMB 1 at all. Did you experience it at the time or did you play it years later?

I cant remember when I played it exactly. But I know SMB1 was the first game I ever owned and played, SMB2, 3 and SML followed soon after and probably all within the same year. So maybe I had raised expectations because of SMB3, which SML2 lived up to. But while I can still go back and play SMB1 right now and enjoy it, I can't say the same for SML1. Yeah, SML2 was similar to SMB3, but it was different enough to make me want to play through both. I liked how SML2's stage order is open ended, and also had multiple secret exits to stages and things to unlock. But with SML1 I felt like I might as well be playing SMB1. Its the same formula with the linear progression. Kinda like a scaled down expansion pack for the NES game.
Its understandable that games were more simple back in 1989, so I'm not going to argue against the reason behind why this was the case. It is what it is. But I can't make myself like it more by being more understanding to why it is this way.

Someone change the name of this to Retro Gaming please.

Just got back into the original Super Mario on Allstars (SNES). Got to world 7 a while back and gave up on the water level. This time I managed to get to Bowser but died. It's still as fucking solid as I remember but still awesome.

Lost Levels had too many of those pit fall jumps where you had to aim for tiny bits of platform to land on. Ones that awere barely as wide as Mario's sprite itself.

I don't think Lost Levels should be considered a proper sequel tbh. It used all the same sprites, music, etc. and was just a collection of harder levels. I'm glad we got the American version as our SMB2.

The first proper sequel is SMB3. I regard SMB2 as a weird non-canon sequel, and Lost Levels I view as just an expansion to SMB1.

The game was fun, it was just a weird Mario game (on account of not actually being one).

I fucking LOVED SMB2 as a kid. Still love it today. Doki Doki Panic had some serious platforming skills. It was considered revolutionary in Japan and that's why it was the perfect game to cut and paste Mario characters into and sell it as a sequel.

Picking up and holding items came from that game. Secret doors and the ability to scroll backwards came from that game. Not to mention still used characters like Shyguy and Birdo.

SMB2 may not be officially official as a mario game. But it was fun as fuck and an amazing title.

Have merged the SNES and Retro Gaming threads since the discussion had been heading in the same direction for a while...

    Hey I changed the title.

At least equal billing I'd say.

    Ok. Let's do this.

    Super Mario World: 96☆ challenge

    ------------------

I first played this game in the summer of 92 (?). Staying up late with my big brother to play as far as we could in one night. It was my first time playing a Super Nintendo and holding the controller, which would become the basis for every controller for every system since. I was blown away. Time to relive some memories.

Yoshis Island - No really this is the first appearance of Yoshis Island. You start out and first meet Yoshi on this island area, first (world) of the game. And there's some fun trivia right off trivia he bat. The first contact you make with Yoshi is actually through the message that he leaves at his house in the Yoshi's House area of the first world board map.

-Yoshis Island 1- The game actually starts out with the option of trying either Yoshis Island 1 or Yoshis Island 2 as your first level. Letting you know right off the bat that this game is going to continue the tradition from Super Mario Bros. 3 that lets you go through a world as you want to. Doing everything and beating every level. Or just skipping ahead or around a world to get to the end.

But I'm doing this in order. There's a reason.

Yoshis Island 1 is a great little intro level. A yellow level. (Only one way to beat it) Not many bad guys and plenty of blocks and jumps to let you get familiar with the controls. The spin jump was never executed this simply again. And you can drill through blocks BABY!

You'll also notice the first appearance of dotted line blocks that let you know there is something you need to do to make these blocks appear. Finding out how to do this is the next thing after beating this level.

-Yellow Switch Palace- Wow what a palace! It's a big empty room is what it is. Each of these switch palaces has some kind of P-Block trick to getting coins and lives. This one is simple. Just hit the purple P-Block and start grabbing coins. If you hurry you can get an extra life by grabbing 100 quickly. Then I hit the switch. Yellow blocks fly out. And fill in all the little yellow dotted line blocks all over the game. I've never played the game through without the yellow blocks. I wonder if it's hard.

    Anyway.

-Yoshis Island 2- (Yellow) The first appearance of Yoshi! Good little training level. The first baddie you see after you hop on Yoshi is a red Koopa. So you eat him and blow out flames. Then it's a green one. And you learn that those Koopas turn into projectile weapons after Yoshi eats one.

Nintendo just sets things up so perfectly so you never miss obvious shit early on.

-Yoshis Island 3- (Yellow) I remember this level being hard as a kid. Super easy now. I guess it was the moving platforms.

-Yoshis Island 4- (Yellow) A water level. I never like those. It's a good level to learn that Mario's spin jump can bounce you off an enemy. That's about it. Blah level.

-Iggy's Castle- This is the first of the Koopa Kids Castles. Each one you beat marks the completion of one area or world of a game. And I recall some of the later ones are going to be total bastards.

Ah the cool chain link fence things! I fucking love these areas in this game. Climbing on them and punching bad guys on the other side. The little flippy gates that spin you from one side of the fence to the other. So much fun.

Iggy is battled in one of the three Koopa kid challenges. A little see-saw island surrounded by lava. I smoked his ass quickly. And then I exploded his castle with TNT! Having rescued the yellow Yoshi egg in the process.

    1st world complete.

I finally managed to beat world 7 in SMB1. Those jellyfish in the water level were brutal. On world 8 now and the levels are much longer than usual. Hopefully complete it at some point today then I'll get on to SMW.

Mario World was great. The Koopa Kid challenge where the fat one climbs up the ceiling and drops on you plus the walls close in as well was probably the toughest from what I can recall. Plus love the boss music at the end with Bowser in his clown copter.

Loved Secret of Mana as a kid as well. I recently played the PS4 remake which is nearly identical to the original with some added dialogue scenes when you sleep at an inn. I wish they'd made it more difficult.

A solid N64 Classic that includes all the Rare games or PS2/Gameboy Classic could do it for me if the right games are picked.

Monday night since I don't have cable I started playing Raw on my RetroDuo. And that also plays NES games so I busted out Mike Tyson's Punch Out! and Bad Dudes for a little while. It just amazes me how terrible I am at these guys these days but 20-30 years ago I was smoking everyone with ease. Punch Out I still dominate but Bad Dudes holy shit that collision detection on old games is hard to readjust.

I need to get my WiiU back from my ex but my 7 year old loves to use the touchpad for Youtube and Netflix. But I have like 20 games downloaded from their store. NES, Super NES, N64. I heard they're going to shut down the store soon as well. Lame.

Anybody else own/play Terminator 2 for Sega Genesis? I don't have the gun like the arcade game did, but this shit is still insanely fun. I got that, along with the 1st Smackdown game for PS1 for Christmas, which honestly I just liked being able to rename the moves and laugh as they showed up on the screen.

Funniest gaming moment for me was me playing FFVII in my student flat at a loud volume. Downstairs student neighbours knocked on the door and I thought I was going to get a bollocking! They were like "You're playing FFVII? Awesome!!!"

My current reading situation is a book called The Final Day at Westfield Arcade. Been a fun read so far and a trip back in time to the popularity as well as the decline of arcades.

Anyoneout there played Cybernatorfor the SNES? Funlittle shoot 'em/platformer. The original Japanese version Assault Suits Valken was a bit dark so they toned it down for the SNES,

The Wii shop is closing on Jan 30, 2019 but to my knowledge the Wii U shop with its glorious Virtual Console collections is not closing.

For me it was Street Fighter 2 Turbo (or New Challenges). If I'm in an arcade, that's what I'm playing 90% of the time - with the other 10% divided between Double Dragon and classic button mashers like Simpsons and TMNT.
