    Retro Gaming

Thought this could be a good topic for this board. Since December I've been doing most of my gaming on the Sega Genesis. The original works the way it should, but ran into a dead battery issue with several games.

Been playing through the EA NHL series which has taken more of my time than the more current versions of the game.
Set up a room with a PS2, NES and the Genesis so far.

Anybody ever own a Dreamcast? Is it shit?

First it was the NES until I discovered the Genesis in seasonal cleaning and clearing.
Got a couple online companies I buy from, one who did a quick turnaround on the game battery repairs.

Any recommendations for Genesis games? I've been heavily into most EA sports games with that but outside of NBA Jam or Mortal Kombat I don't really have anything else.

I broke out my Super Nintendo recently. I burned one and ran through Super Star Wars, Final Fight and Batman Returns.

I enjoyed Jurassic Park on Sega. There was the option to be a dinosaur in the Sega version which was fun. I remember playing the hell out of Ninja Turtles and Aladdin on Sega when I was kid.

My room in my house has PS 2, 3 and 4. I got a N64 and a Wii. Rounded out by my NES, Super NES and a Sega. I got Atari box sets for Christmas with all the games already built in but haven't weaseled it in my set up yet.

The Dreamcast wasn't shit, but it was let down by lack of decent software (I think my brother only had three games for his) and 3rd party support.
As for Genesis Megadrive games, you can't go far wrong with the Streets of Rage series. If you have two players, a good one would be Star Control (if you can find it).

Most of my retro gaming now is done via emulators/ROMs for the Spectrum, Amiga, SNES & N64.

I loved the Dreamcast, that thing was way ahead of its time. Online play was so fucking cool for 2000.

Trying to remember my favorite Dreamcast games. The 2K sports games were really good for the time. Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter.

I still play some Nintendo 64. No Mercy, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart. I've been thinking about getting a few more games, wouldn't mind playing Star Fox and Mario Golf again. I have my PS2 but don't play it a ton. I have some games for it but they're mostly sports games that are obsolete.

I still play the Micro Machines games on the Mega Drive. I don't think there's a funnier gaming experience than 4 players attempting to get on that fucking sponge boat at the same time and trying to bash each other into the water in the process.

I have got to get a replacement N64 and SNES. Both mine bit the dust a while ago.

You know what system seems to always stay plugged in to one tv or another in my house? My fucking Gamecube.

That sounds fucking hilarious. I've just been enjoying the older game systems a lot more than the new stuff lately. Don't any longer have a PS1, but the 2 plays those games. I remember years ago making a 2 hour tape of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and Die Hard Trilogy gameplay which was mostly blowouts and the Minneapolis level getting crushed by taxis, and DHT going around shooting people in the face.

I'd love to play the Die Hard trilogy. Favorite movie of all time. I still have a copy of Die Hard for NES. That one is worth a penny or 2. Game is tough though. I'll get the game genie out if I don't want a challenge and am just looking to kill some Terrorists!

I still argue with a pal of mine about who would win in a fight. John McClane from Die Hard or Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon. I'm locked with McClane but for some reason he thinks Riggs would win.

I'm waiting for an upgraded SNES to come out, which seems likely given the success of the classic NES. I've heard playing the original SNES on a modern TV is a waste of time but hopefully the updated version will sort the blurriness out.

    Fuck off mate.

I built a games cupboard in which I had my NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube/PS2/Saturn/Dreamcast/XBox all linked in to one TV. Then I had a kid. Now the kid lives in the room with the cupboard. Now I never play in it.

    Life.

Sonic series (spinball got on my tits mind)
    Golden axe

a good few more that I forget atm.

There are ways to fix that, depending on how much you're willing to spend. Basically old analog signals from retro consoles look like shit on today's TVs, so you have to buy some kind of video amp/scaler/convertor/line doubler to sort that out. You can get a cheap solution for under £30 or pay £200+ for something that works with the least amount of problems.

The most well known scaler in the retro gaming community is this one:

I fucking love the Banjo-Kazooie games.

God the first game is good. The second felt like almost too much. Plus the StopNSwap crap that they let everyone down on.

I play the SNES pretty much every day with my lad. Mario All Stars is such a favourite that I spent £20 getting Super Mario World from EBay. We also play Bubsy, which is great fun.

Want to get Donkey Kong Country, but that will cost about the same on EBay. As for the picture etc, it's not too bad at all.

Got the PSII out the other day, but he isn't keen yet. Despite the plethora of wrestling games I have on there. Oh yeah, Raw and Royal Rumble are firm favourites on the SNES also.

I remember 100%ing the first game before that was even a thing. I then played the second game on an emulator and I couldn't get far into it at all. It was a common theme for the later Rare games to overegg everything (see also DK64 and Mr Nuts).

    SNES Mini

    Yes. It's happening.

And if the thought of that alone wasn't exciting enough, check out the game list.

I'm currently trying to figure out where to buy one of these. Cuz there's no way I'm missing out.

Secret of Mana....I need that game.

I currently own a Dual Retro which lets you play NES and Super NES cartridges, it's awesome for $45, well worth it. I also have a WiiU which has 90% of these games. Still, I'd buy it just for Mana I think haha.

I can't wait to never be able to find one. Nintendo says they're producing significantly more units than the NES Classic, but I'll believe that shit when I see it.

They could have easily priced it at $120 considering it includes the unreleased Star Fox 2.

I was super hyped when it was announced.

I mean, super. But it's £80. £80. Hype bubble burst.

Had a Pi 3 lying around that I'd picked up a few months ago. Think I'll make use of that tbh.

If it makes you feel any better....if you bought these games in good condition, even without the box, you'd be paying about 20 times that total. This is a steal, $100+ US=worth it.

I want one for the sake of having it. The SNES is my all time favourite console.
I already have two original SNES consoles at home (PAL and NTSC). I have SNES games on my phone, my tablet, my 3DS, PSP, PC, laptop, but fuck it. I still need one of these.

Didn't care too much about the NES Mini, but this I have to have.

If I didn't already have the Dual Retro and the WiiU, I'd get it for sure. The only thing I don't like about the mini's in comparison to like the Sege Genesis console pack they sell is that you can't play the cartridges. The Genesis with the 40-50 games can play Genesis games, my Dual can play both NES and Super NES, that's a big deal to me when consoles, GOOD consoles, are hard to find at a reasonable price. $100 for this deal though, it's worth it.

If it's functionality that you want, this and the NES Mini were never going to be good value for money. Having said that, if this is anything like the NES Mini, it'll be running Linux and will be hacked to run games from most retro consoles anyway, which I plan on doing to add the rest of the SNES library.

This looks great, but I hope the amount of units they produce can keep up with consumer demand or that production doesn't end prematurely. For some Star Fox 2 will be worth buying the system alone. I predict that this will be a better seller than the NES Classic. I imagine with how the NES Mini went and the inclusion of Star Fox 2, Nintendo will make a lot more of these to be sold.

Legendary list of games there but I'd rather spend that kind of money on something from the current gen. I can play all of those minus Star Fox 2 already. More 'unreleased' sequels like that would guarantee sales at that price tag though.

Totally agree. I imagine this would be more for people who aren't savvy with the whole "emulator" stuff or don't have WiiU, old consoles, etc. Convenient and worth the cost when you consider how much it would cost to buy these games today, used, including the console. Some of these games, out of the box and used, are like $70-80/each. Crazy.

All of the UK retailers sold out of pre-orders within minutes.

That's what I figured because I have a couple friends online who have already talked about how pre-orders are going to be non-existent by the end of the day haha.

I think the only reason it doesn't is because the NES mini has them...well I don't know about Lost Levels but it does have the other 3. I have this for the Wii and I remember renting it for the Super NES when I was like 12. It's super fun but it's weird playing it, and then playing the original versions because the graphics on All-Stars game were updated along with the music.

I'm guessing All Stars wasn't added in since its on the NES Mini (minus Lost Levels). Looking back, swapping one of the Kirby games for Chrono Trigger might be the only change I'd make if we had to stick within the game limit. I wouldn't say its the best 21 games you could get on the console, but they've included the ones that IMO made the most sense if you wanted to showcase the SNES.
If I had it my way, I'd also have the other two Final Fantasy's, Killer Instinct, the Mortal Kombat's, Bomberman's, a localised Secret of Mana 2 and a bunch of other JRPGs.

    EDIT
    Or what ND said.

It's fantastic. One of my favorite games ever.

It was on the original Wii's Virtual Console but it disappeared when they went to the Wii U. I've been wanting to replay it (again) for a few years now and have kept waiting for it to show up on the Wii U. Because of this, it was the first thing I looked for on the SNES Mini.

There you go, there's a SNES emulator and pretty much every game for it.

If I have some cash I'd buy the system myself. The thing is that Star Fox 2 can be unlocked by completing the first level of the first game. I still haven't bought the Megadrive one yet, though.

The Mega Drive one isn't an official release by sega - its essentially a licensed emulator with a terrible sound capacity in it going by my experience with AtGames units. A large number of the games in there were never even released for the mega drive also. If i remember correctly it says there are 80+ games on the unit and only about 40 are actual mega drive games

Save your money on this one...

Depends on your tech knowledge and experience with a Raspberry Pi.

    That looks fucking awesome.

Can someone please tell me what the negatives of this are? £110 for 6400 games and it's ready to go?

Literally none from what I can see. It's just £110.

The setup he listed on the second one has everything you'll need. It lists wi-fi (but that's part of the Pi) but you'll never need it. He's even fitting a heatsink which will mean it'll last longer. It's "good to go" in the box. It'll likely never need the OS updating.

Just make sure his Etsy reviews make him legit enough that he's not stiffing you on the ROM listings.

From what I gather you can do it cheaper if you want to put it all together and do all the installation yourself. I wouldn't know where to start. I'd happily pay £110 for that.

The Pi and gubbins is like £40 or maybe a bit more for a nice case, although you'd need to find a place to buy "classic" pads. I'm just going to use a 360 pad on mine. Once you've spent time putting the ROMs together for the thousand games (which is just time consuming), setting up a new Pi is like 10 minutes tops.

OH HOW THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT. Maybe if you did some research, you'd be able to Reech your potential. Eh eh?

A rom is just a file. Each game is a rom. You use an emulator per console. So, you need a SNES emulator and roms of each game. The emulator then "loads" a rom as though you put the disc in the console.

The "stiffing you on the rom listings" is me doubting he has that many or that they all work but I'd assume his reviews call any of those out.

Yes, but look what happened - I chucked a cross on the T-Zone and you scored. I smashed a cross on your instep a yard out. I cut a curving through ball into your path through three players and you scored.

Now you are helping me. Look at what we do for each other.

Oh and talking of ROMs, here's a link to a single download which I think has every game released on every console up until about the GameCube. Download size is about 30gb

The emulation software in the NES Mini was pretty much identical to what was already out there. I can't see that what's in the SNES mini would be any better than current SNES emulation software like snes9X

Sod it, I just bought this. Think I've got everything else that I'll need (other than maybe a micro SD card, I'll have a rummage at home) so hopefully can get the whole lot for £35.

I'll let you guys know how easy it is to set up. If I can do it anyone can.

Yer samesies. Beefy the canary in the mine. Hlebsfall are you saying that the emulator makes the graphics fine on a big TV? I played N64 on a modern TV a while ago and it was blocky to the point that it wasn't really worth bothering with.

Buy what Beefy bought, and you can actually use your PS4 controller on it via the USB port and save a little cash from that as well. Its literally the same as that £110 thing posted earlier. The difference is the packaging and the software being pre-installed for you.
The set up can be a bit of a pain if done from scratch, but you can find downloads online where everything's done for you and its literally a case of "just copy these files onto your SD card, copy your roms into this folder, pop your SD card into the thing, and you're good to go".

If you're talking about playing the actual N64 on your big TV then the emulator will always look better since its working with a digital signal as opposed to the old analog signal that everything back then used.

I don't know why I ask these questions because I never understand the answers. Basically my understanding was that the blockiness is because the games were designed for the smaller TVs of 20 years ago, and so look shit on much bigger modern TVs, which is why the original consoles look shit but the new ones have been remastered or something to make them look fine?

Also, I'm setting up my Pi for emulation and already have setup a Pi as a media server, so if anyone has any issues, get in touch.

You don't even have to use it by USB - the Raspberry Pi 3 has Bluetooth connectivity. PS3 and PS4 pads supposedly work perfectly with it.

As RuneEdge said, it should look better than using old hardware on a modern PC but to a degree you're going to have the issue that you're describing. GTA3 looks way better running on my PS2 on a 14" portable TV than the remaster does running on my PS4 in my front room.

The thing with old consoles is, the resolution back then were much lower than today. Today we have HD resolutions, which is 720p and beyond. 1080p is the current standard that most TVs use today, and we're slowly moving to 4K (which is a fancy name for 2160p). Consoles back in the day were running at 240p and sometimes 480p. So yeah, you're basically stretching 240 rows of pixels that your retro console is producing, and sending that across the 1080 that your HD 1080p TV has, which creates the blocky look. Consoles today give out 1080 rows of pixels, which fit perfectly onto the 1080 pixels on your TV, so there's no stretching involved. To put it simply.

Regarding the screen size, the smaller the TV is, naturally there's less stretching involved. So even if you're stretching the PSX's 240p onto a 1080p, if the TV itself is literally smaller like 14", it won't look so blocky to the human eye.

Well right now our friends at Amazon are dispatching it to Belfast where it will go to a company called Parcel Motel. They will receive it by tomorrow and then bring it down to a locker at a petrol station in Dublin where I can pick it up.

So hopefully it will get here on Saturday.

I'm going to buy an SD card tonight and do the downloading of the software and all of those ROMs that Klebs linked to yesterday.

    So we're close.

The controllers for these things are almost always shit. Like when your mum buys you a GAMEST4R TURBO joypad instead of an official one.

I play the Mega Drive, SNES and N64 on our big LCD all the time and have no issues. The graphics are poor but they don't impact on whether the game is playable at all. Maybe it's because I'm used to it but it's probably because I'm not a wanker.

My top tip was to buy a Pi, a case, a power supply and the SD card from somewhere like RS-Online.

Looks like you all missed out on it.

How is that a top tip? The power supply is one of the 18 different mobile phone chargers anyone has got lying around, SD cards can be bought anywhere and the case was included in the Amazon listing I put up.

Your power supply is key. It's not just "another one" like you have on your mobile. If you get the wrong one, you'll either fry your motherboard or not have enough power to run it and the USB devices you're trying to use.

    TOP. TIP.

No it isn't. It's a bog standard 5v USB charger like almost every modern non-Apple phone uses.

    FUCKING HELL REECH

EDIT - ok it needs to be 2.5A as well but I'm pretty sure I've got that covered.

Beef mate, I didn't see your apology. I'm assuming you're still writing it up.

So Reech may have been more right than I initially gave him credit for. All my Android chargers are 1.5A and so aren't powerful enough. Bloody Reech.

That said, my iPad charger is powerful enough so screw you Reech, I win.

I haven't played any of the RPG's from Square, Kirby's Dream Course, this Street Fighter release, or Super Punchout. And I've only briefly messed around with the Star Fox 2 prototype in emulation so I can't judge that one. Challenging games, but challenging in a good way, except for Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts.

Is this the apology? Or is it still forth coming?

Man, wish I could've been there to see the dawning realisation that I was right on your face.

Got my ROMs and put my RetroPie on my SD. Need to plug it all in now and see how it is. Think I'll use an old 360 pad for a controller.
