basically a couple draft picks, one being a 2nd rounder and a starter on defense. I would imagine Butler, a 2nd and 4th would get the Saints to pull the trigger but knowing Cooks won't resign there and that he isn't happy there you would think the trade value would go down.

I think Butler and a 4th is enough for Cooks to be honest just like I think a 2nd and Kendricks would be enough from the eagles but what do i know

Torrey Smith not going to the Ravens after all. Eagles signing him to 3 years and 15 million. I like it. Cheap and now they can draft another outside guy.

The Bengals have now allowed 2 pro bowl caliber O-linemen slip away from them in a week. unacceptable from a Cincinnati perspective. They failed to get rid of Marvin, and now they are losing their O-line.

Cousins has asked Dan Snyder to trade him. Snyder told him it was doubtful. This is going to be a fun year in Washington. GM is a mess, the QB wants out and his top 2 WR threats just left.

Not as fun as it'll be in 2018 after Cousins bolts in free agency.

Colts, Bears, and Eagles are finalists for Jeffery. My goodness that would be a nice signing for the Eagles to go along with Torrey Smith, Jordan Matthews, and Ertz. Then they could focus on the deep corner and running back class for the draft

Woodhead to the Ravens, Britt to the Browns, and Hauschka to the Bills. Ted Ginn, Jr. to the Saints, so a deal for Cooks may be imminent.

Good call by the Browns. 4th round pick for Brock a 2nd and a 6th. They can see what they get out of him for the year and go from there. Low risk for them and they can focus their picks elsewhere.

NFL Network are suggesting that they don't even want him - they're just taking the extra second.

That was my first thought. it has to mean Romo to Houston.

Speaking of which, the Cowboys are now expected to trade him rather than release him. So that report from earlier in the week was wrong.

    Browns get: Brock, 6th in 2017, 2nd in 2018

You still have to think he is at least in the mix at QB there next year though right?

The Texans just sacrificed a 2nd round to get rid of Brock. God, he is that much of a headache.

Browns might just cut Brock immediately per RapSheet.

Romo posts a goodbye vid on Instagram.

Fuck, this is really the best day of the offseason. Even better than the draft.

Free agency officially starts NOW btw. lol

    Hate giving up a 2nd.

BUT, if we land Romo we'll have essentially have swapped Brock and that 2nd in 2018 for a move up from a 6th to a 4th this year and Romo, and the room to comfortably re-sign DHop.

Fingers crossed on this bunch of batshit.

Ha. Browns are cutting Brock. They just want the picks. Good move on the Texan's behalf finding a way to dump that weak link.

As for the Eagles, what a day! Jeffery and Smith all in one day to help out Wentz. Eagles, Giants and Cowboys are going to have a ton of fun battling over the NFC East next year.

alshon deal looks to be a one year contract for $14 million. clearly we wanna see if he can stay healthy and unsuspended before investing long term. guessing this was an issue for the other interested teams too since he seems to be taking the deal.

Pats quietly re-sign free safety Duron Harmon and DT Alan Branch to moderate deals. Good stuff - keeping a couple key role players.

Now let's keep the big one - Hightower. Dolphins supposedly in on him too.

I was mixed on the deal at first. Not on Alshon but the deal itself since I wanted him long term. However, thinking about it and listening to reporters on the radio it seems to be a good deal. Prove it type deal and they could always sign him long term later or franchise him if he has a good year. They are going to have a lot more money freed up with Peters, Daniel, and Celek off the books.

The Jaguars are making moves to quietly field one of the best defensive units in the NFL. Ramsey and Bouye are one hell of a one-two punch.

yep, cutting the fat next off season frees up at least $26mil. all around a pretty decent deal.

Rumors are now that the Broncos have talked to the Jets about Siemian. But both the Broncos and Texans say they do not want to trade for Romo, just sign him as a FA.

I think I like that Osweiler deal for both sides. Houston gets cap room to go after Romo. Or anyone else who's not Brock Osweiler. Cleveland gets more picks and I don't think that $16 million for this year was going to be put to much use anyway. The only way that free agents are coming to Cleveland is if they get overpaid, the Browns are only going to improve if they draft talent.

Jeffrey on a one year deal is a good move. They can tag him next year if they want. I think it was crazy of the Bears to let him walk with all the cap room they have.

I didn't realize the Browns get a discount on Osweiler if they cut him and he signs somewhere else. Whatever the team that signs him pays him comes off Cleveland's cap hit. Based on the deals Matt Schaub and Brian Hoyer got there's going to be somebody that pays Osweiler a couple million as a backup.

On the other hand Brock has no reason to take any gig this year if he is cut because unless someone pays him a contract worth more than $16m (which obviously won't happen) then he's no better-off financially on the field getting hit than he is staying at home. You'd naturally think that he'd want for the sake of his career to be competing somewhere but you look at a guy like Mike Glennon and realise that a QBs stock can actually sky-rocket by not playing and people not remembering how average/poor he is.

Is that right? I didn't think it worked like that. I think if he signed somewhere for 2 mil he'd make an extra 2 mil despite any cap hit adjustment that Cleveland would get.

Other news, Jimmy G posts a goodbye post on Instagram but apparently it's a hack but it's still up as of this moment so I don't know wtf is going on.

I think I read that he has got offset money in his contract so anything he gets paid elsewhere reduces what the Browns have to pay him. It's the same story with Revis who has an offset clause in his Jets contract.

Romo doesn't have that offset agreement in his contract so if and when he is cut he gets to double-dip on his wages next year.

    EDIT - yep:

"If they’d trade him, it would surely be for much less than the $16 million in guaranteed salary Osweiler will earn this year. The new team would take Osweiler’s contract at a reduced rate, and the Browns would pay the difference.

The same thing will happen if the Browns cut him, however. Given the presence of offset language in the contract, the Browns would pay the difference between whatever Osweiler gets on the open market and $16 million."

And that is the language that kept Joey Bosa out of training camp last year. He would not sign if it was in the contract.

Gotcha. If I were the Browns, I would keep him or at least entertain that possibility. He seems better than their other QB options at the moment. Why not keep a guy with starting experience since you're on the hook for his huge contract anyway, and hope he can improve? And if they draft a rookie, it's good to have a veteran there with him to compete. But we may be past that point since they've made it clear they don't want him so that bridge is pretty much burnt. Bizarre situation. They should have handled it more gracefully to keep the door open for Brock to stay on the roster, IMO. Imagine being so bad that even the Browns won't have you. Yikes. Brock has to be feeling like dirt.

Back to Jimmy G, the weird thing is, Schefter is dying on the hill of the Patriots not trading him no matter what. He's so adamant about it, basically getting upset if you say otherwise. He's balls to the wall that Jimmy will be on the Pats roster next year even if they get offered 4 first round picks. Jimmy's instagram post is killing him. If a trade happens, Schefter's reaction has become must-watch. It would be the most wrong he's ever been and he might explode.

Some people think Jimmy posted the pic himself because he's trying to force a trade or show that he's upset with being a backup again. Some people think the Pats are using Schefter as a stooge to get the price up. A lot of ins, a lot of outs, a lot of what-have-yous.

The Browns/Texans deal was brilliant. The Texans dumped dead weight while opening up cap space, while the Browns landed a second round draft pick, which is huge for a franchise in a state of rebuilding. I love the move, and found it to be collaboratively brilliant.

Holy Batman! Pats land Cooks from Saints AND keep Butler. Give up first and third round pick, get 4th in return. Incredible.

So far this week they've acquired Cooks, Dwayne Allen, and Kony Ealy by trade and all they gave up was a 1st. They moved back from 2nd to 3rd, moved back from 3rd to 4th, and moved back from 4th to 6th, but still kept picks in a deep draft. Also signed top FA Pro-Bowl CB Stephon Gilmore whIle everyone else was ogling AJ Bouye.

Yeah 3 years/18 mil for Bennett is a good deal. He was looking for more so it seems like the market didn't pan out as well as he wanted but I'm glad he went to a good team and can play with A-Rod. With any luck the Pats will square up with him next season in February.

    The Patriots somehow get better.

Meanwhile Chicago is looking a bit like a shit show, better have a killer draft. That's something I don't expect given their history

This has been a wildly aggressive offseason for the Patriots and it's far from over. I don't see them staying put picking at #72 in a supposedly strong draft so there's likely a shoe to drop with an outgoing player. I hope that's a monster Jimmy G trade but it could be Malcolm Butler or Eric Rowe.

Signing Hightower is still key. Without him they'll have a weakness at linebacker without the draft capital to replace him.

But yea this is a lot of fun. They're finally going ALL IN with 40 year old Brady after being forward thinking for 10 years.

As for the Cooks trade: I love getting the player, I love the aggressiveness but I'm not going to act like we fleeced them. We gave up a 1st and a 3rd which is a lot. He's a small fast guy not someone who can body a CB and go up for the ball. The Pats and Saints have had shared practices in recent years so Bill must like what he's seen.

Paying Gilmore what we did (31 mil guaranteed, 40 guaranteed for injury) could also be an albatross of a deal if he underperforms. The last time we gave someone that money in free agency was Adalius Thomas but again Belichick has seen him a ton since he's coming from Buffalo.

That said, if we can somehow finish the offseason with Butler and Hightower on the roster then we will have a top 5 defense plus the best offense and probably go 19-0.

The Lions are being too quiet for my tastes. They signed a decent OL, but they really need to step up their game to sign some quality cover guys and linebackers. I am sick of seeing our backfield get torched by every QB we faced last year. Drafting a couple is fine, but some veteran talent to compliment them would be much appreciated.

Malcolm Butler will visit the Saints on Thursday as it looks like his time with the Pats may be coming to an end. It'll be sad to see him go but I hope he gets a good contract and brings us back a 1st round pick.

maybe he wanted to leave because he heard the pats wanted to unload him or not resign him? If the Pats wanted to sign him, I doubt he would want to leave

It seems, more than not, Butler is disgruntled at the fact the Pats signed another corner and attempted, or rumored to attempt, to trade him. If I were Butler, and I knew Hightower was resigning, I would stay put. He is missing out. That said, as long as Hightower resigns with the Pats, which it looks as though he will, I am happy.

I don't disagree with you on this one, but then again you wanted Bob Kraft to fire Belichick and trade Brady 3 years ago despite all their successes so you must understand that sometimes you should be heartless if you think it's best for the team.

But yea, Bill is definitely a heartless fuck and assuming Butler gets dealt I can't say I'm happy with how they chose Gilmore over him. I don't want Bill to be sentimental and pay for past achievements (he never does) but football-wise the book on Gilmore is that he's long and athletic (hence being a 1st round pick), good in man coverage but he's not eager to tackle (often lets his teammates handle that) which won't fly under Belichick who values tackling above all. Butler is undersized but always gives maximum effort, is solid in coverage and a hell of a tackler. I would rather keep Butler all things being equal since we know he can play our way. Hopefully Gilmore can be coached into that. Bill must look at him as a high ceiling guy who can develop into a truly elite CB like a Sherman or Talib or Revis to pay him what he did. Butler will probably never be that. Hopefully Bill is right and Gilmore flourishes here, in which case maybe we'll say Bill the genius did it again. Or it could blow up in his face like Adalius Thomas.

Best case scenario here, given where we are now, is that we have a year of Gilmore and Butler together then Butler lands his big contract next offseason, elsewhere. But that's looking less and less likely to happen.

    (spoiler for size)

OJ Howard quite early here, but he could well be a home run kind of TE
    Wentz gets another weapon
Deshaun Watson goes to QB purgatory
And while I'd be bummed to not get a OT (Ramczyk, Bolles) in the first, I'd have to pull the trigger on Trubisky in that spot

10 carries a game for a guy that goes 14th? I would be so against the Eagles taking him. If you go running back then Dalvin Cook would be a better bet. I would be in serious shock if the Eagles took McCaffrey

10 or so carries, plus a few catches, plus the return game. 15-20 touches from an explosive back to mix with Matthews & Sproles?

I'd rather have Cook too, but McCaffrey should be a legit asset to whoever lands him.

If the Browns don't take Garrett at #1 overall, they're as fucking dumb as they come off to be.

The Bengals should take Corey Davis, not a ILB. They struggled with the passing game last year and their offense took a major step backwards after losing Jones and Sanu. That said, losing 2 pro bowl offensive linemen doesn't help any either, so Dalton needs someone, besides a double covered A.J. Green, to catch a pass. Lafell is trash (Pats knew that 2 years ago) and I couldn't even name their 3rd at this point. They've taken a major step back, and it's sad, considering Marvin should be gone but he continues to be paid while our core players are being let go. Oh wait, no, they kept Dre' and Pacman... that's something. SMH. Get the fuck out, jesus.

I agree that he would be an asset but 14 seems high for not being a feature back, in my opinion.

The thing with McCaffery is his character and knowledge of the game. For a player to be the squeaky clean off the field, yet that intelligent on it, plus perform at a high-level with an exceptional amount of talent, it's hard to pass on. He could convert to a slot reciver like a Julian Edelman and be very, very successful. If you had the #14 pick in the NFL Draft and knew you had a Julian Edelman in your sights, would you pass on him? I wouldn't.

Oh wait, no, they kept Dre' and Pacman... that's something. SMH. Get the fuck out, jesus.
I totally get the concern over a position of need, and I won't pretend to have kept up with Bengals transactions. But every team in the league would be some varying degree of regretful for passing on Foster. Honestly feel he's the best overall player in this draft. A fucking sideline to sideline wrecking machine who has Keuchly-level instincts.

Not thinking I'll change your mind or anything, just can't help gushing over how good this kid's gonna be.

Foster is a stud, and the sort of a player Marvin Lewis will target, and most likely draft. I would have no complaints, as it's a solid option, but the Bengals as an organization are not creating opportunities for success. They let 4 of their core offensive players go in the past 2 years, yet rely on Andy Dalton and A.J. Green to carry the load, which we saw last year, is not feasible. I just think you have to try and bring in another play maker on offense, address your offensive line concerns and then worry about defensive play makers.

If you look back at their last 5 drafts, none have been successful. The last successful draft they had was 2012 where 4 of those picks turned out to be key parts of the team. What do they do? They let 3 of those 4 leave town, then sign the biggest bust of that year to a 55MM dollar contract! Bonehead.

3 of their last 5 first-round picks have been corner backs, who combined have a total of 38 starts and 10 interceptions. Bonehead. That's not even 13 a year on average, or 4 interceptions a year, on average... COMBINED! 9 potential seasons between the 3 corners and only 38 starts... What? That's like the Detroit Lions signing 3 receivers back, to back, to back, and all 3 being failures. If at first you don't succeed, try again... and wait... one more time for the ole' hat trick.

    BONEHEADS.

HB: speaking of the Bengals I just watched the 2016 highlight reel for Rex Burkhead and now I'm pumped to have him here. He'll do some damage in this offense.

Running Backs are getting dick all for contracts this offseason. Peterson, Charles, Blount, Latavius Murray all still out there.

No good reason to tie up valuable cap space on a tread worn back with a bunch of fresh, inexpensive hands chomping at the bit in the draft.

Burkhead is a stud. He will fit in perfectly with the Pats. Marvin Lewis had zero idea how to properly utilize him and maximize his ability in their offense. Bellicheck will transform the guy into the next Danny Woodhead. Good catching works.

Again, another bonehead move by the Bengals.

If you had the #14 pick in the NFL Draft and knew you had a Julian Edelman in your sights, would you pass on him? I wouldn't.
If cook is there at 14, I would take him over mccaffery. You compare him to Edelman but I've heard comparisons to bell and David Johnson for cook

Latavius Murray to the Vikings. Likely ends AP's time here. I'm excited. He looks to have pass catching ability, and blocks. Automatic improvement.

We'd have 3 Vikings fans? Almost as bizarre as the amount of Dolphins fans we have.

well it's gaining traction with sources saying there's a good chance it'll happen. he's from Oakland so that's why he wants to go there, aside from them being a playoff contender in need of a RB. Seattle still owns his rights so they would have to release or trade him.

I hope he does come back. I'd like to see him be the piece that Oakland needs to make a deep playoff run. Beyond that, he's one of my
all-time favorite players and I don't have an Oakland jersey yet. I'll have to get one if he comes back.

Not sure how much national attention it's gotten but Aaron Hernandez is back on trial for double homicide (separate from the murder he was already convicted of) and the above article is a wild story of the lead witness in the case, Hernandez's former best friend who was shot in the face by Hernandez but miraculously survived (sans one eyeball). Chilling stuff, definitely worth a read.

Yeah I read that this morning. Great article. Bradley is an interesting guy to say the least. What a crazy life these two had together.
