Top 5 Movies You Can't Stop Watching

After reading Beer Monster's list of his top 100 movies I started thinking about my own. I definitely don't have the time or energy to spend jotting down my top 100 so I decided to do a little spin on it.

What are you Top 5 movies you can't not watch if you see it on TV? Doesn't matter if you own the DVD or not, but if you're flipping through the channels on a lazy Saturday and see a movie on, you can't help but think "ok, now I know what I'm doing for the next couple hours." This just happened to me over the weekend and I even made a comment along those lines.

    Here's mine:

Goodfellas - by far my favorite Mafia movie

Man On Fire - best revenge movie ever

    American Gangster - great cast

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - maybe it's cheating, but every once in a while TNT has them one right after another. Can't help but watch them even though I have the DVDs in the basement

Forrest Gump - probably my favorite film of all time

I forgot about Training Day! I can't pick my favorite Denzel movie.

Honorable mention: The Departed. Not just for the acting but the music is great in it too. All around a great movie.

Good thread idea. These aren't necessarily the best movies ever just the easiest to slip into at any given time when they come on. Off the top of my head:

The Parent Trap (Lindsay Lohan version)
    The Dark Knight
The Wolf of Wall Street (even though it gets heavily edited on cable)
    Crazy Stupid Love
    A Few Good Men

    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    The Princess Bride

I have watched both of those countless times. After that little more tricky but here or some off the top of my head that I have probably watched more than a few times and could do so again.

    A Few Good Men
    Deadpool
    Mrs. Doubtfire

I could probably exchange a couple of those out for a couple more if I thought about this more.

Have you read As You Wish about the making of The Princess Bride? Great book. I read it in like two days, I couldn't put it down.

Started it at one point but one of those didn't finish before I had to start doing a ton of reading for a class I was taking and never got back to it.

    A Christmas Story
    Stand By Me
    Deep Blue Sea
    Boogie Nights
    Sexy Beast

Three of those are my most watched films of all time. I could watch any of them on repeat quite happily.

Semi-Pro is when I realized Will Ferrell is just not that funny. The Office, Blades of Glory, Get Hard, Daddy's Home, Zoolander, etc. just further prove this.

He is a fine dramatic actor though, I really enjoy Everything Must Go and Stranger Than Fiction.

    1. The Shawshank Redemption
    2. Braveheart
    3. Happy Gilmore
    4. My Cousin Vinny
    5. Goodfellas

If any of them are randomly on TV life grinds to a halt.

That's not to say they're my favorite movies, although Shawshank is, it just means they're going to ruin my Saturday afternoon.

It's fun to watch. Not too serious. Feels like they have sort of given up, and it's just absolute nonsense. Everyone says it sucked but I think it's the most watchable of the 3.

In not particular order. Billy Madison, national Lampoon's Christmas vacation, step brothers, misery

Inumber one for me is (500) days of summer I watch it probably once a year. At one point is was once every six months if not less. I guess you could call it a guilty pleasure but I don't feel guilty about it.

    Love it

    1. Firestarter - I caught this on TV when I was very young, and it has always been a must-watch since. I still put it on every once in a while

    2. The Cable Guy - one of the funniest films I've seen. With the Medieval Times, karaoke jam, and bathroom beating scenes, this film never gets old for me

    3. The Room - the term "so bad, it's good" gets thrown around a lot, but it especially applies here. This film is a lot of fun to watch at a theater, especially if you have plenty of plastic spoons handy

    4. Back To School - classic Rodney Dangerfield. I can never have a dull time watching this film

    5. Bad Santa - must-watch during the holidays, and still enjoyable the rest of the year

Good list, shame about the end.

I really do not like 500 Days Of Summer. I question the achievement in filming a truly pathetic part of the human condition.
I feel almost the same about Eternal Sunshine because it is horribly awkward and makes me hate humanity but you cannot deny how incredible the writing is whereas 500 Days is just watching two desperately stupid tossers in a terrible relationship and I can watch Made In Chelsea if I want to see that. It's about as well played.

I know a few people who love that movie like I do. Most of them are people that discovered it after a shitty early twenties break up.

    I am one of them.

I won't defend it as some masterpiece. The expectations vs reality scene is pretty awesome though and an absolute high light.

I'll check it out but I doubt it'll upset 500 days of summer. I saw it at the right time in my life.

First time I watched it, I thought it was great

Second time I watch it, I realised JGL's character was a massive fuckwit throughout the whole thing.

    Haven't watched it since

I had a similar experience except I still liked the movie. He is a twat. He's talked about it actually. Pretty sure the writers knew that as they wrote him.

Not gonna hear that bullshit about Zoolander. He's the best part of that movie.

Ferrell can be a bit dire at times when he's the main man. He's at his best when he's playing off someone else (eg The Other Guys, Stepbrothers) or if he's a supporting character (Zoolander, Wedding Crashers, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, The Producers, Old School, Austin Powers)

I enjoy Will Ferrell and own almost every movie he has done. Even a really awful early one called Men Seeking Women.
    Even Bewitched.
True I got it for £1 and have tried to watch it twice and got a grand total of twenty minutes through before I had to retire it for good but it's in there alright.

I am trying to fill in my Ben Stillers and Steve Carrell's too but they're 80% there already. The comedy DVD shelf has warped rather badly as the collection grows.

JGL is such a twat in that film it hurts to watch it. At least he's good in it though. Zooey Deshanel's character didn't really even have to be there. It could have just been JGL hate wanking into a sock over some FB photos for 80 minutes.

Oh no wait that's essentially Don Jon

I was that guy in my youth.

JGL in 500 days of summer, not Don Jon.

OK a little bit of Don Jon

    - Die Hard - Every single time its on. And yes it is a Christmas movie.

    - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - The best of the bunch and one of the best action/adventure movies ever made.

    - Aliens - Single best action/sci fi movie ever made. All time great cast. Somebody wake up Hicks.

    - Anchorman - It's like caffine. Not good for me but I get headaches when I go too long without it.

    - Jackie Brown - My favorite Tarantino movie. Something about it just pulls me in every time I watch it. Maybe it's because I long to be a sassy black woman. Maybe Keaton is just cool as fuck.

And I'm doing more now because your rules do not apply to me now get your paws off of me you damn dirty ape.

    - Spaceballs - I think I've seen this movie more than any other film.

    - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The old one of course. It's still a nice night and the pizza dude still has thirty seconds.

    - Platoon - It's easy to trace, the tracks of Dafoe.

    - Full Metal Jacket - 762 millimeter

    - Young Guns - I love Billy the Kid. I love every actor in this movie. Bon Jovi.

    - MAJOR LEAGUE - Fuck this should have been the first one I thought of. Don't give me this olay shit Dorne.

    - The Empire Strikes Back - The best of the original trilogy. Anytime is a good time for empire.

    - The Fellowship of the Ring - Best movie to smoke weed to ever.

    - The Naked Gun - Should have been the second thing I thought of.

    - The Paper - Keaton, Quaid, Tomei, Close, Duvall, stop the presses.

    - Gung Ho - Seriously. Gung Ho

    - Ghostbusters - Most watched film of my youth.

    - The Neverending Story - Second most.

    - The Matrix - I pretend the sequels don't exist. Makes the ending better.

    - The Last Boy Scout - Bruce Willis's's most underrated movie. Damon Wayans best.

    - High Fidelity - It's a Cosby sweater.

    - Karate Kid II -

    1. Children of Men
    2. Fury Road
    3. Pulp Fiction
    4. Super Troopers
    5. Con Air (yes)

bit of a mix. There's more. Guardians of the Galaxy has been a regular. That and John Wick have oddly become christmas traditions.
edit; simmo reminded me of Snatch which has to be my fav flick of all time. Glad we both had Super Troopers. Second one upcoming is going to be bad.

Not sure about a top 5, but currently anytime The Force Awakens is on I find my self unable to not watch. Not sure of the longevity of that though.
One for all time though is Jaws. Can't not watch that if I see it's on.

I'll add in American History X, as long as it's not edited. Can't watch that if it's on regular TV, but if it's on a movie channel or on IFC I'm stuck on the couch for a couple hours.

And 25th hour. One of my favorite endings of all time. The narration and the visuals at the end are perfect.

I should point out that I don't have cable so I don't have that ability to just catch a movie that's on TV. I do remember growing up that Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Forrest Gump, and the Vacation movies always being on TV and I always watched them.

The Wolf of Wall Street (even though it gets heavily edited on cable)
    Crazy Stupid Love
    A Few Good Men
Excellent, excellent... did I say EXCELLENT list my friend.

I would add Shutter Island and Gladiator to this list as honorable mentions and you have my top 5-7 movies.

Princess Bride, Flash Gordon, Labyrinth, Rent, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Titfield Thunderbolt, Warwagon, Fallen.

Mixed bag but those are the dvds currently sitting on the top shelf which pretty much make up my go to list, over Christmas I'd add Scrooge and the Muppets Christmas Carol.

For top five I'd drop Guardians, Warwagon and Labyrinth.

Saying it has its moments is tantamount to a slap in the face. It's a wonderful rom com from start to finish.

The amount of rom coms I like can be counted on one hand, so saying it has its moments is high praise. I can't remember the last one I saw that I liked.

    1. The Departed
    2. Rounders / not really on anymore but if I saw it flipping through the guide I for sure would put it on.
    3. Road Trip / same reason as rounders.
    4. Knocked Up
    5. Superbad

honorable mention(s) pretty much any Adam Sandler comedy. I know not everyone's cup of tea but I like most of them and can watch them when they are on.

Believe I have seen Freaked at some point. I will need to rewatch to confirm. Speaking of that, I really wish I had a log of every film I've ever seen, including dates seen, number of times seen. I wonder what my most watch film is. Probably Halloween or The Princess Bride.

If I'm drinking heavily then there's a good chance I'm going to watch The Dark Knight once all is said done. I fucking love beer, so I watch The Dark Knight quite a bit. I'm like that with the first two Halloween films as well.

    The Dark Knight
    Halloween 1 & 2
    The Cable Guy
    Mean Girls
    American Psycho

Batman Begins trilogy is always on and I've watched TDK and TDKR 6 times in the past month.
Shawshank Redemption - never get tired of watching it.
Forrest Gump - such a classic
Joe Dirt - it's on often and it cracks me up.
Harry Potter films. Any of them, all of them. Every holiday weekend, Freeform tends to do a HP marathon and I'll watch all of them with no problem.

I used to watch the Bill and Ted movies constantly. I tried to watch the first one again recently and couldn't get through it. Second still entertains me.

Beer fest is one me and my friends watched constantly in high school and I'll still watch it if I see it on.

I've seen Pineapple Express and Superbad tons too I may actually put Superbad in tonight. Role Models is a forgotten gem as well.

    Twister is also fucking class.

I saw Clerks 2 probably 8 times in theaters. I had a close friend who was moving and we spent most of the summer together. If there was nothing else to do (which is common in a small town) we'd drive a half hour and go see clerks 2.

I'm not really the type to watch movies over and over. Usually I'm trying to find something I haven't seen before. I'm more apt to watch TV series all the way through multiple times-Breaking Bad, The Wire, 24, West Wing, Sopranos, Mad Men, Friday Night Lights. Watched all of those all the way through multiple times.

Movies I've watched a lot of times:

    1) All the Batman movies
    2) Goodfellas
    3) Die Hard (Christmas tradition)
    4) Some James Bond movies (Goldfinger, Goldeneye, Casino Royale are the ones that stand out)
    5) Heat
    6) Silence of the Lambs

Keanu Reeves is Ortiz the Dogboy. Always blows my mind. Keanu is so cool. Doing favors for his buddy.

Best line in the movie is probably "Oh that's just a regular turd! Looks kinda like Wynona Rider."

Watched about half of that movie at my grandparents' house when I was a kid and also read the novelization from the library. Really want to see the entire film sometime.

KK2 is pretty underrated in my book, and definitely a movie I can watch any day of the week. I love the plot element of Sato's return from the dark side, but utter guilt for teaching a student that simply rejected it. And Miyagi reminding Daniel that this isn't another tournament, that Chozen could actually kill him. Solid shit.

Oh it's totally one of those sequels that you can make an argument for being better than the original.

There's always a book version of movies. It was just a little paperback version of the film with some color pictures stuck in the middle.

I thought I'd looked into it a couple years back and heard folks could only find clips. When I made the earlier post, I thought I should look again 'cuz it's been awhile. Bill sent me the link and did the work for me 'cuz he's a top shelf guy like that. Looking forward to watching it sometime.

    Tombstone for sure.

And it is a fact that Crocodile Dundee 2 was just plain fun. I used to recreate the scene where Dundee signals for help from the aboriginals with a bathrobe belt with a tennis ball tied at the end.

Hit myself in the face once super hard. Bloodied my nose.

Lemme just dial up our ol' pal wikipedia...

The writer of a novelization is supposed to multiply the 20,000-25,000 words of a screenplay into at least 60,000 words.[3] Writers usually achieve that by adding description or introspection.[4] Ambitious writers are moreover driven to work on transitions and characters just to accomplish "a more prose-worthy format". Sometimes the "novelizer" moreover invents new scenes in order to give the plot "added dimension", provided he is allowed to do that.[6] It might take an insider to tell whether a novelization diverges instead unintentionally from the finally released film because it is based on an earlier version which possibly included meanwhile deleted scenes.[1] Thus the novelization occasionally already presents material which will later on appear in a Director's Cut.[7] In spite of all restrictions the writers select different approaches to enrich a screenplay. Dewey Gram's Gladiator for example included historial background information. Shaun Hutson refused to write a novelization of Snakes on a Plane because he found the source material too "poor".[8] Still Christa Faust accepted and filled the pages by inventing detailed biographies for some of the early killed passengers. She was then praised for having presented "full three dimensional characters".[7]

Timecop novelised. Timecop was surely just some doomed writer's last pitch.
