Fair enough. I tend to forget about cricket actually. Doesn’t exactly demand a ton of airtime in the states.

I honestly couldnt tell you a single rule.

Absolutely brilliant piece of negotiating on his/his agent's part. I actually just sent him an autograph request a couple weeks ago. Fingers crossed he sends it back.

The Yankees homered in every game they played in during the entire month of June.

Edwin Encarnacion has played in MLB games in three different continents this season alone.

Tyler Skaggs of the Angels dead at 27. They canceled tonight's game as well. Very sad situation. He went to high school here.

I think you can take the D train from Rockefeller Center station to Yankee Stadium. Should cost you like $3.75 for a single ride Metro card. Takes 30 minutes or so.

If you're going to take more than a few subway rides, look into getting the 7 day unlimited ride Metro card.

Unlimited card is $35 I think, so if you’re doing more than 10 rides it’s worth it. And you can share it with the people you’re traveling with.

Vlad and Joc in the second round were astonishing.

Its pretty cool for Alonso to earn more in one night ($1 million) than his full year rookie contract of $550,000 pays him.

The Atlantic League, at the behest of MLB, is testing out a new rule in which a batter can attempt to advance to first base on a passed ball/wild pitch that isn't caught.

With two strikes, they can swing well after it has crossed the plate and advance to first on a strikeout stolen base. Pete Rose did this more than once. Are they proposing that a batter can try to advance with less than two strikes?

On any pitch not caught during it's flight. So basically if a ball touches the ground, on any count, the batter can attempt to advance to first base. Wild pitch, passed ball, doesn't matter.

I guess if there's a guy on third and less than two outs it would be worth a shot, maybe. In that case I'd assume the catcher would probably make an attempt to get the guy at the plate since it would be a) a potentially run-saving play and b)possibly be a shorter throw depending where the ball ended up. Then the batter is on first.

I would also assume this would result in less breaking balls being thrown to speedier guys who could attempt to steal first if a ball gets away. Still, awful idea.

Well, it happened for the first time. A batter took first on an 0-1 count after a wild pitch.

Curious that they are saying it is a stolen first base, but then also say it goes down as a fielders choice cuz of the catcher.

Mets are supposedly shopping Syndergaard pretty hard. Not sure if they’ll actually pull the trigger on a trade but if they do it better be for a big return. After the Cano/Diaz trade the fan base is fed up with the GM in addition to the constant simmering hatred of the Wilpons. Syndergaard is probably as popular as deGrom and Alonso. Trading him without receiving top prospects will be career suicide.

He's got a year left on contract I think, probably delusional in thinking they get that wild-card spot but can always flip him for someone else later. Seems like a low-risk move with what Mets gave up.

Yeah seeing what they gave up it's not bad at all.

From the Jays perspective, that's really the best we could get? Fuck me Atkins you're trash.

I love Stro and know he really wanted to stay... they seem to be trying really hard to eat shit like the Orioles outside of core of Guerrero, Bichette, Biggio etc. I admit I don't know too much about pitching prospects they may have, I'm just disappointed they decided to trade him away... especially for that.

I swear the Mets (read: Wilpons) could fuck up a wet dream. There is absolutely no doubt they should be sellers. But they win four in a row and suddenly decide to start buying. It should tell you how bad their farm system is if the guys they gave up are their fourth and sixth ranked prospects.

The optimist in me hopes they’re trying to put together a package deal of Stroman and Wheeler to get a really good return from somebody who needs two starters, whoever that might be.

The Mets fan in me knows they’re about to trade Syndergaard for less than they should be able to get for him, and the Wilpons/Van Wagenen are in CYA mode. They’ll spin it as looking forward to 2020, couldn’t pass up such a deal, the Mets will be the team to beat next year, blah blah blah.

He should get a pretty nice reception, I'd imagine. Mets fans are usually pretty welcoming until the players start turning into the exact opposite of themselves on other teams. Or they inevitably get bit by the injury bug and the Mets staff bungle the treatment.

At 22 years old, Rafael Devers is on a 162-game pace to be the 6th player in MLB history with 30+ HR, 120+ runs, and 120+ RBI in a season before turning 23. He would join Alex Rodriguez (1996), Ted Williams (1939), Joe DiMaggio (1937), Jimmie Foxx (1930), and Mel Ott (1929). Bafflingly didn't make the all star game.

Twenty two. The Red Sox offense is stacked. It would be a shame if they miss out on a wild card spot because of their mediocre pitching. They're underachieving. Don't let them get hot.

EDIT: I originally quoted a tweet with stats that were inaccurate. UPDATED FOR ACCURACY.

The Red Sox lineup hasn't been their problem, starting pitching has been nothing special, and their bullpen has generally been poor.

I don't think anyone wants to face them in the post season, but as a Yankees fan, I'll be glad if they don't even make wild-card game.

I agree that Devers is really something special

Don’t know which part of the Reds-Pirates brawl I enjoyed the most: that it started with a pitcher charging the opposing dugout and throwing haymakers only to flex afterwards or that Puig was involved after being traded.

The Red Sox are spending 226m on payroll and trail a team spending 62m by 2 wins

Price, Porcello and Eovaldi's salaries for 2019 are as much as the entire Rays payroll

Imagine mediocre pitching being the problem after that. What a well run baseball team. It would certainly NOT be a shame if they miss out on a playoff spot.

I love the Bauer the Cincinnati move. The Reds have been rebuilding for 6-years now, it's about time they stop fucking around and pull the trigger on "real" talent. The rotation will not consist of Bauer, Castillo, Gray, Wood and Roark, all of which are solid, to All-Star level players. They have the best rotation they've had since 2012, easily. If Votto can find his swing, Senzel stays healthy and this offense can start putting some runs on the board, they could overcome the 6.5-game deficit they currently sit in for the NL Central. It should be a fun run the last two months of the season.

This is all true, but they have an incredible homegrown lineup with Betts, Devers, Bogaerts, Benintendi, Vazquez and Bradley. JD Martinez being the one major hired gun on offense. I love that core of homegrowns and it's them that make me say it would be a shame to miss out on the wild card game.

Pitching is a mess of high paid external hires. And yea the overall payroll is the highest in the league which rightfully makes us a not very likable team, like the Yankees. We've become like them, no doubt, and it's been that way for a while now. Very fair. But man the lineup is exciting and young.

I wish the Texans had a GM even a fraction as capable as Jeff Luhnow.

I just wish the Texans had a GM, but ahem ... back to baseball.

Yea, 8 game losing streak. Not good. I still think they could get hot and make a run at a wild card spot because baseball is a fickle sport like that (and their lineup is gangbusters) but it seems more and more likely that this is a wasted season. Oh well, can't win em all.

They played outstanding against shitty teams. Big test this weekend against the Nats. Have to take two out of three to keep it going. There’s a good chance if they do that they’ll be leading the wildcard.

    Will they wear old-style uniforms?

Surprised the White Sox would give up a pretty full stadium as the Yankees always draw well on the road.

Speaking of the Yankees, it's been pretty amazing to see them beat up on the Orioles this season.

    • 43 Home runs at Camden Yards, an MLB single-season record for a visiting team
    • 5 Games, including three straight, with five-plus homers, an MLB record for a road team at any ballpark
    • 10 Individual multi-HR games — a record for any road park
    • 52 Home runs against the O’s in 15 games, a record vs. one opponent, with four more games remaining at Yankee Stadium

It'll make the White Sox just about the promotional center of the baseball world for a spell.

This once in a forever event is probably a bit more marketable than game 120 of another baseball regular season.

    What. A. Comeback.

4 runs in the 9th to keep the streak alive and to move to winning 13 of their last 14.

Chris Sale reached 2,000 career strikeouts in 1,626 IP. The fastest in MLB history.

Now granted this was bound to happen given that strikeouts are on the rise league wide, but still impressive. He's having a down year but his ERA is 4.31 and dropping. I could see it getting into the 3's by year end.

He signed a 5 year $145 million contract. Hoping to get your ERA under 4 doesn't seem like a very lofty goal.

He would almost have to be perfect in the 7 or so starts he has left to get it under 3.

I think he meant get it into the 3's as in it could end up being 3.99

Again, not very high standards for the contract he has and that he is supposed to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. He still has a lot left to prove and needs to have his post season defining moment someday.

yes sorry i meant into the 3s. That's still a tough task with such few starts. Like if he goes 7 innings and 3 runs, that won't do much to his era.

True especially since he gave up a few more runs in the game that night after I posted that. Anyway, yea, down year for sure but I don't expect him to be falling off. He's 30, other aces have had down years and bounced back nicely. I'm still happy they extended him.

    It isnt.

So the Yankees got shut out yesterday for the first time in 220 games. During that time period, the Marlins were shut out 26 times.

Felipe Vazquez' nickname is Nightmare. Seems applicable.

On to more positive MLB news - I thought it was great to see Severino make his season debut in fine form. And it was fun to watch the standing ovation the Fenway crowd gave to Yaz's grandson Mike for homering - even for the visiting SF Giants.

But the highlight for me was Cavan Biggio (son of HOF'er Craig) hitting for the cycle, becoming only the second ever father-son duo to both hit for the cycle.

With the nice season Mike Yastrzemski is having there has been quite a bit of Carl Yastrzemski talk this year in Boston.

The guy was a solid player, and probably HOF worthy. But there is a bit of revisionist history now where he is talked about as an all time great. He certainly is not. He benefited greatly from one of the longest careers of all time, which does say something about him that he lasted as long as he did.

From 1967 to 1970 he was among the best in the game. The other 19 years he was good, but not great. And I say this as a Red Sox fan. A bit overrated in my opinion.

An 18 time all-star (out of 22 seasons), and you're counting 14 of them as good, but not great. Perhaps you're forgetting the era he played in - when pitchers could dominate. In the time he played, total runs scored per game were a hovering below and around 4, now they are about a run higher per game. So individual offensive stats are higher, while pitching stats like ERA are much worse.

I think it's kind of silly to exclude longevity from consideration as to whether a player is an all-time great.

I will agree that from 67-70 he was among the best in the game, but he won 7 gold gloves in those and was a top fielder most of his career. There's little doubt that those 4 years added to his legendary status. He won a batting title in 63, and led the league in runs scored

I am not saying he belongs on a Mount Rushmore as one of the top-four best players to ever play, but he's still an all-time great player.

And I say this as a Yankee fan, who was elated when another sometimes overrated player, Derek Jeter surpassed Yaz on the all-time hits with a single team list.

I don't believe in curses but thank god I only root for one Atlanta team.

    In the past couple weeks,

    - Johan Camargo hits a foul off his shin. Depleting the already thin bench.

    - Culberson takes a fastball to the face, ending his season.

    - Freddie Freeman develops elbow soreness due to bone spurs. Probably won't play again until the playoffs.

    ...and now...

Ronald Acuna has a strained left groin. Won't play again until the playoffs. This ends his bid for a 40/40 season. He only needed 3 more steals to do it.

They've clinched. No reason to bring him back and risk him trying to run three times. Rest will do him and the team better.

If the Cubs hadn't won a couple years ago, the amount of curse ranting over their finishes to the past two seasons would be unbearable.

Yeah I know you're right. I just love me some Ronnie and really wanted to see him get to 40/40. He's still travelling with the team and taking BP so he couldn't be THAT hurt.

Still. I was really hoping we wouldn't be so beat up at the end of Sept. It's going to take a healthy Braves team to beat the hot Cardinals and Dodgers.

Praying to God the Nats somehow advance to the NLCS. For whatever reason we've owned them all year long.

Yeah the nl central is the fucking craziest division in baseball.

    He'll get his 40/40 eventually. He's only 14.

Hopefully they are out for the first round of the playoffs

And Atlanta pulled the same deal with him they did with Freeman.

Other teams have to try and do this more often. You go to your young stars that you KNOW are going to command 200 million in 3 or 4 years and you say

"Hey kid. Screw waiting for free agency. Why don't you take this cool hundred mil right now? We just need 10 years and your first born child."

Then when they turn 30 (or in Ronnie's case 23) you can decide if you want to double the money for the back half of their career or just let them go play for the Yankees.

But yeah Acuna is great. I can't wait for him to hit his last growth spurt and really become amazing. Plus he's going to become a much more confident player once he gets over his acne and his voice changing.

I know it's unrealistic, but the image of Yelich limping off the bench to pinch hit in the World Series and doing the Gibby trot around the bases keeps flashing in my head.

Interesting look at the most talent on the best teams left and how their rosters were assembled..

Solid start by the Brewers. Would love a couple of add on runs here.

Watch out for these Nats in the 8th and 9th. They're dangerous late in games.

I see that. Way too many pitches here for him to go another inning. Well, he can, but too many pitches.

    This is tense.
