    Jesus the NL east sucks.

In no universe should the Braves be 1 game out right now. But there they are. It's a race to see who can get swept in the first round of the playoffs.

don't be so sure of that. The Cardinals won the world series with 83 wins. Phillies and Mets have the starting pitching staff to hang with teams. The Nationals were 59-53 at this exact part of the schedule in 2019. Not saying the NL East is going to win the world series but to say they will get swept in the first round is a little silly especially because they will probably end up playing the Brewers who are good but not daunting.

Mets have the starting pitching to hang with teams but the game is over as soon as the starter or bullpen gives up more than two runs. Their offense is beyond putrid at this point, it's nonexistent. They could get hot though but at this point I think they need to shut down deGrom for the season.

Not happy they traded for Baez though. Seems like a waste considering where they were when the trade deadline happened. I had high hopes for Pete Crow-Armstrong.

I just had hopes of the Braves being far better and the division itself not being so lame this year. I can't look at Philly the Mets or Atlanta and see a winner here. Everyone has such huge glaring weaknesses.

    Unvaxxed Rizzo gets Rona.

Sounds like a Dr. Suess book.

Edit - he is a cancer survivor also.

Well he's part of a 3rd outbreak within the Yankees organization this year alone. However, he is not just an anti vaxxer. He's made smart statements on why he has chose not to get it. He will be fine. He's a strong and beautiful man. I miss you rizzo

    The Ricketts need to go.

Luke Voit with the go ahead bomb in the 9th, on Rizzo day, after complaining about the Rizzo acquisition is hitting the palate like a fine wine right now.

They should move the fences back 15 feet and play the World Series there. Maybe the coolest baseball setting ever.

Very cool set up. I agree with Loco on the world series part. They should have saved it just for that. Those balls were fucking popping though. Holy hell.

They could play the one-game wildcard playoff there. Having that game be "neutral site" would be nice and couldn't pick another place better

That was the first baseball game I went out of my way to check out since the Cubs won the World Series. I've only been to that place once with my grandparents years ago, we just drove by it. I hope they do have another game out there it would be nice to go especially if the Cubs are playing.

Let's see what the cubs look like next year before putting them there.

The Ricketts are more interested in building sports bet bookie building on wrigley than they are running a baseball team.

It's more about the Cubs being the closest thing we have to a professional team, plus the Iowa Cubs. I barely follow the sport these days, and when I do I fall asleep and dream about Shawn Dunston and Andre Dawson.

I told a buddy I will never buy another cubs jersey of a current player. My money is going to the Dawson, Sandberg, banks, Santos, dunston, Williams, etc.

Yep he would have to be in. I've still got a Kerry wood jersey and I'll lump him in as a classic cub. Kinda torn on Sosa though.

Gotta have Sosa. Him and Mark made baseball interesting again after almost a decade of Braves and boredom. Yeah fuck the Braves and especially fuck you Dave Justice.

Red Sox - Yankees wild card game at Fenway. Oh yes. This should be fun.

And it was a dramatic finish to the season yesterday by both teams to get us here. Great comeback win by the Sox after being down 5-1.

Condolences to the Blue Jays and Mariners.

After his last trip to Boston, the Red Sox should intentionally walk Stanton every time he comes to the plate.

Red Sox may not win another game all year.

I don’t care. Ending the Yankees season and sending their fans into a state of absolute lunacy is worth it, considering early season projections didn’t have Sox making playoffs.

If I did the math right, Cole made just under $400K for his work yesterday.

The Red Sox mounted a nice comeback in game 2, and then the classic extra innings game last night with the highly debatable ground-rule-double ruling when the ball went off the wall then hit hard off the outfielder's body then went over the wall and out of play. The runner from 1st probably should have scored since he was off on the pitch but they put him on third. The Sox ended up winning by 2 so it sort of didn't matter, although you can make the case things would have happened differently if they let that run score.

In any event, it's been a good series so far. Here's hoping the Red Sox can close it out tonight at Fenway in what could be a high scoring game because both pitching staffs are pretty well exhausted.

Just makes it even stupider that they cheated. Clearly they have a good team, but now they will only be synonymous with garbage bins.

Eh, they're legitimately dumbshits for bothering with the lengths of their nonsense, absolutely. But I've no doubt that they simply felt caught up in an arms race with every other team - and make no mistake there were others - who were trying to find that particular edge and of course they took it too far. But I believe the data's shown that they really gained no edge and they even abandoned the practice as that was the case. Just a terrible look all around and if everyone wants to try and cancel culture them into oblivion then tha's fine, whatever. Apple watches and other methods are on record that all point to the same intent, they're just being judged on the optics of their unique brand of shithousery and being to a degree scapegoated as to not out a largely league-wide practice ala the steroid era.

But again, I'm not flat out apologizing for their bs, they deserve to be called out, it was terribly juvenile and ultimately just plain wrong. It also doesn't take one wit away from their accomplishments for me.

Now minus Verlander, minus Cole, minus Springer, and minus any extracurricular junk it's ALCS season again and I'm pretty effin cool with that.

The Astros cheated and won. It's not stupid that they cheated it's quite smart because it worked. Still, they only have 1 title which is (so far) a disappointment. They could easily be a 2 title team, and maybe they'll get it this year but not if my Red Sox have anything to say. The Stros need the second title to dispel the cheating aura just like the Patriots needed it after their scandals. Not to say I am comparing the severity because the Astros were much worse offenders, but the public perception is about the same.

My advice to Houston fans would be to not let the cheating thing bother you - but if it does, then the only cure is another title. Then people can't say shit.

    Sox in 6.

I've yet to see any data that their cheating actually contributed in working to their advantage. If you have then that's fair. And so in that way it was stupid, unnecessarily so.

The 1 title is definitely a bit disappointing. But I'm not saddened by it. The organization tanked so obviously and epically with the rare successful result of half a decade of seasonal to the wire contention, including the first ever franchise championship, that's continuing through this very day. So I'm good with the at large picture, but ya, one more this year would really seal the deal.

    Stros in 7.

That's the intent, which is the same shit intent as apple watches and whatever else any other team was attempting at the time. It was stupid and shit and condemnable.

I'm not sure what you're missing here though. I'm talking about any data that the cheating actually had a net positive effect on their actual play. The data I've seen is that it in fact didn't.

I have not looked at the data lately or probably in the way you have, but I remember posting this:

I'm not really trying to harp on the cheating thing (although now I am), I was only weighing in on what you guys were talking about. But I don't agree with your characterization of it as juvenile and nonsensical. I mean I know what you're saying, but let's not act like it wasn't a sophisticated scheme that took sign stealing to another level. And the buzzer under the jersey theory... I mean it was odd that Altuve didn't want his jersey taken off.

There were other cheating scandals, sure, but none that I'm aware of involved an audio cue to the hitter. The distinction is major - being able to steal signs in every at bat, or only being able to steal signs when you have a runner on 2nd base to relay it to the batter.

That all being said, I'm not an asterisk guy. The Astros won their title and it can't be taken away. Even if it could be taken away, I wouldn't be in favor of that. They won.

    That's fair, but also..

    https://today.duke.edu/2020/07/did-c...n-world-series

    https://www.latimes.com/business/sto...ating-analysis

    https://climbingtalshill.com/2021/03...ng-didnt-help/

And again, intent is important. If you intent to cheat and attempt it then you're a full blown cheater. Being good at it matters, and the stats for their 'cue to the hitter' method is not really conclusive that they were, but actually aiming to do so is key. Many others aimed to do so and the Stros were right there at the front. And it was juvenile in so far as taking a sophomoric thing like banging trash cans as far as they did. Also the behind the scenes bickering about to do so or not that took place looks just as Three Stooges in hindsight.

I didn't care to break the subject down then and I'm not thrilled to now. I didn't even bring it up. I imagine this is what it was like being a Pats fan in their heyday though so ok I guess.

Well it all worked out great for the Pats in the end and that was a very fun time looking back on it

And of course the fun thing we haven't mentioned yet is that Alex Cora is now the Red Sox manager so I presume this will be brought up this week to some extent. Cheater or not, Cora is the man in my book.

The reports of Beltran being a central figure while others like Altuve, and most importantly Hinch, wanted nothing do with it. Like it wasn't some thoroughly thought out villainous plot amongst the entire clubhouse. Hell it was a former player who outed them. The biggest takeaway was that Hinch was a new-ish manager enough that clubhouse leaders like Beltran, and yes to some extent Cora, were pushing the issue to a point he had trouble controlling. He admitted himself that he should have done a better job putting a stop to the nonsense, even after breaking a video monitor or whatever to try and prove a point that the players involved blew off and continued on.

I'm loving this for my Braves. Every single moment is just gravy on this season. Because the Braves

Best pitcher = Mike Soroka - hasn't pitched once all season

Best power hitter = Marcel Ozuna - suspended since before the all star break.

Best all around player = Ron Acuna - out for the season with an ACL.

No reason to be here. But so glad we are.

And here's how fucked up baseball is, if the Dodgers win the series against the Giants then the Braves get home field advantage in the NLCS.

    The Braves won 88 games.
    Dodgers won 106.

Its just silly. There's a way to do this where winning the division still means something and teams all compete right down to the last game instead of coasting the last two weeks. In no universe does Atlanta deserve home field in these playoffs. We were a flat out mediocre at best team for the first two thirds of the season.

I think the Dodgers winning 100 games and being a wild card is the exception, not the rule. I understand your logic, but if the Dodgers haven't won their NLDS round yet. Might not be a topic tomorrow.

Would it really fuck up people's shit that bad to just give home field to the team with the most wins? Winning the division would mean something still. It would mean you get to go to the playoffs.

And let's not use tradition as a reason. Because traditionally there shouldn't be divisions or playoffs. This is all shit we just made up so why not make it make sense?

They are likely to expand the playoffs instead of reformatting it. Apparently the CBA is up once the season is over.

The fact that there is a playoff game for the Wildcard spot is stupid as is.

Anybody but the Assholes, I mean Astros.

    PS. Fuck Tom Glavine.

Wow. Braves actually have an edge here. They were 3-1 last year on these same Dodgers and due to no days off and my understanding of where we were pitching wise I said LA would still win in 7 and I was right. But this is a little different.

I wonder what the Dodgers do tomorrow? Only used 3 bullpen arms so they can come at Atlanta with everything.

God I want this. It's been so long.

Yup, let's go Braves. I don't even feel dirty for saying that, as a Mets fan. I'd like to see Freeman get a ring.

And it may be his last chance in a Braves uniform.

There is a legit "team of destiny" feel to Atlanta these last couple months where they just defied all odds and started winning in impressive fashion despite so many big name stars being unavailable due to injury or fuckheadedness.

I was listening to game 6 of the NLCS in my car on the way home from work when we won. I had to pull over so I could laugh/cry and just basically lose my shit. It's been no cubs drought but it's felt that way. I think mostly because of all the frustration of the way the 90s ended for Atlanta.

5 world series trips. 1 ring. And it all concluded with 8 straight losses to the fucking Yankees. But it was Atlanta and surely we'd get another shot right? Well it's been 23 years since the 98 World Series where the Yankees swept the Braves...and 18 years since these same Astros beat the Braves in an EPIC 18 inning war of a NLDS game 4 that pretty much concluded that era of Braves baseball.

It's been the 19th inning in my head for a looooong time boys.

No Acuna, no Soroka, no Ozuna.

    Fuck it. Braves in 6.

Edit - Game 4. Perc right as usual as per his gimmick.

It was actually game 4 when Chris Burke finally sealed the deal and ended that goddamn game and series. Went to a 5th game the previous year.

And so our squads have a bit of a history Rancy. 3 LDS defeats to y'all while we were trying to come up against the big bad established Braves.

Then we finally turned the corner as those Braves were on their way down in '04 and '05, but we just couldn't quite get the entire job done.

And after some pretty big ups and downs here we are, leagues apart now but staring down a put up or shut up series again.. this time for it all, for everything.

I know what you mean by 5 WS and only one ring. We're not quite to that extent, but I get it. One more would be it.

I like you Rancy, but fuck you Rancy. For the next week Rancy, fuck you. We've got some unfinished business.

    Absolutely.

Got a lot of people moaning about "not getting the best two teams" and ok, there is a little truth there but this match is perfect. The starting pitching of the Braves vs the scarry offense of the Astros. (For those that don't know the Stros are number one against both right and left handed pitching I believe) Bullpens feel about even.

I figure we get a lot of 7-6 type games here. I feel like the key for the Braves is for our starters to just contain the Astros somewhat. Also going to need the big names like Freeman and Albies to step up and get hot which is possible against the somewhat suspect Houston starting pitching.

For Houston. If they score heavily against the Braves starters this could be a quick series. It's really all about how Fried, Morton and Anderson do. If they pitch at a B+ level or higher I think we have this. If they don't then I don't see how we can compete offensively.

Gonna be a fun one though. I feel like we're going to see a lot of runs scored and I don't see either team winning in 4 or 5 so it should be good and competitive.

Oh and gotta love Dusty Baker vs Brian Snitker (whose son is a coach for Houston). Two old dogs going at it. I have a shit ton of love and respect for Dusty and how can you not love the Snitker story? The guy has been in the Braves organization since the Carter administration and finally got his first shot to manage at the big league level a few seasons ago and it's been great having such an old school "fuck your analytics" manager in charge of Atlanta.

Excited for the start of this series. A few college friends of mine have made their way to Atlanta and they have become die hard Braves fans. Hoping for them they can win it.

    That's one.

Fuck me that was a 4 hour 9 inning game.

Losing Morton for the series BLOWS but at least we got the win and made his start count.

I only made it through the 4th inning. Charlie Morton is insane.

Yeah for those that didn't see it live, he didn't just break his leg on a comebacker.

He broke it and then just kept pitching for a while. Pitching well. For a while.

Then I guess the endorphins wore off lol.

Absolutely needed that. Couldn't go to Atlanta for three straight down 0-2. 1-1 is bad enough. No dh is gonna be a booger. Weakens our entire outfield d assuming we keep Tucker and Yordan in the lineup, which seems a necessity.

Knew this world be a tough series with the crazy momentum from Atlanta and our obliterated starting pitching. Just gonna have to keep puckered that much longer.

So much for my prediction of these games being slugouts.

Kyle Wright looked good in relief. Bet you dollars to donuts he replaces Morton in game 5.

    Let's go to Atlanta!
