I personally believe juiced baseballs are being used now. Dingers gets ratings.

Not sure why the lol there? Do you disagree that MLB baseball can have a face? Or do you think it should be someone else? Ohtani?

Mike Trout was the best player in the league for the past decade or so, but he has shunned the spotlight, and is about as bland as they come. Perhaps that made you forget how when a player stands out so much, he not only gets attention from fans of other teams, but brings household name recognition from casual fans. Judge and Ohtani have done that.

Pujols arguably had it for a while. Jeter definitely had it. Ken Griffey Jr had it for a bit.

Back in the 80's, you could argue that George Brett, Wade Boggs, and Rickey Henderson all had it. And before Reggie Jackson in the late 70's, there was Johnny Bench and Pete Rose. Do I have to go back to Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, or Jackie Robinson?

    You get the idea.

So what's so laughable about me calling Judge the face of baseball?

I don't think MLB has had a face since I don't even really know who, Jeter perhaps.

It's one of baseball's self-admitted problems, it's why they tried to 'let the boys play'.

    Also, relax.

Baseball is appreciated at such a local level (you know how your team is doing, don't even know WHO plays for the other teams) that's its kind of hard to have a "face of baseball."

I mean one can totally say that the Yankees as a team are the face of baseball I guess.

So Atlanta has won the series from the Mets by beating DeGrom and Scherzer. Odd games too in that both guys looked just fine outside of the home runs they gave up. But that's what Atlanta does these days. It's swing big all the time or go home and that was enough.

So that puts the Braves in first for now but if the Mets win tomorrow the division is tied and the Mets own the tie breaker. So it has to be a sweep.

104 year old Charlie Morton tomorrow. He just got a one year extension from the Braves. Time to earn it.

Best divisional race in baseball. Has been for months. What fun.

Pujols hit a home run in his first regular season at bat at Busch and he hit a home run in his last at regular season at bat at Busch.

Pujols, Waino, and Yadi left the game together yesterday when they pulled Waino. Going to miss that trio

Awwwww man. Braves nearly made history.

Harris just laid down a sac bunt. That's the first one of those all year for the Braves and it came in game 161.

No team had ever gone the whole year without one.

I'm rooting against the mainstays. I really hope Houston and LA lose. As for the Yankees, the most fun would be to see them lose in the World Series, but I'll certainly be happy with an earlier exit.

I'm sure I commented on the new playoff format back when the announced it, but now as it's gotten underway for the first time, it still seems pretty solid. So the "bye week" for the top 2 seeds is 5 days. 1 day off after game 162, then 3 days for the WC, then 1 more day off. Not bad. Sucks for the Mets to lose in the WC round but I can't say it was unfair - getting all 3 games at home is a solid advantage.

Just be happy both Pujols and Yadi, especially yadi, got to go out in style with some nice hits. Yadi's last at bat being a foul ball fly out would have sucked.

Baseball is dead to me for the foreseeable future. Maybe when the owners start to care about the team instead of a gambling facility I'll get back into watching more regularly.

It would have been great to see Pujols get further into the playoffs. That's too bad.

Baseball has been dead to me most of the year but now is very much alive, because I have turned into a casual fan who starts paying attention for the playoffs. Even when my team is out of it. Go playoffs!

The Toronto collapse, with the brutal collision, was really epic and terrible.

No. Pujols got his homies he needed, the cardinals getting booted out with a sweep was the absolute best for business baseball. In all seriousness though happy for both yadi and Albert. Yadi is one of the best and Albert is just a stand up class act.

A lot of people giving Mets management grief for bringing out Ortiz in the 8th down 4 nothing to the trumpets. Personally, it was the first time I had seen it and I thought it was wonderful. Pure entertainment, got the fans jacked up and created a pumped atmosphere. Baseball could use more moments like that.

Also a little surprised to learn that Yordan's game-winner was the first ever post-season walk-off shot to come from multiple runs down in the one swing.

    Fuckin neat.

Braves picked a hell of a time to play hands down their worst baseball of the year. Bottom line, I think the Mets and Braves wore themselves down competing in the best divisional race of the season and there was simply nothing left in the tank for the post season for either team.

But I can't watch this version of the Braves anymore. Tennessee is smoking Bama so I'm going to watch that.

    Yankees staved off elimination.

Did you ever notice the only thing anyone ever staves off is elimination?

Otherwise? No staving. Especially not off.

Other than that I don't really have a dog in the fight as they say.

Also, not being in the mood for shit talk makes it the perfect time to talk shit.

Definitely rooting for the Astros in this one. Can't ever root for Philly.

And I like chaos so I'd like to see all the Yankees fans I know lose their collective shit. So far I've heard fans saying they want Judge gone (haha, bullshit they actually want him to go), Cashman gone (might not be a bad idea), and saying they only want to keep a core of about five players and jettison the rest for whatever they can get. I'll be shocked if Judge isn't a Yankee next year.

Hell, at this point I'm hoping they sweep Philly just to see a team go undefeated in the MLB playoffs.

So I'm listening to Colin Cowherd from this morning (I like hot takes, they're funny) and we all know what a blowhard bullshitter he is right?

Well he and his clueless cohost are talking baseball which of course is dead on sports radio so the hosts don't watch, don't follow and know nothing but is that gonna stop Colin? Fuckkkkkkk no its not!

Colin goes on to say that HE thinks baseball should ban the shift because it would be good for baseball ratings. To which his cohost says "Do you think they would DO that?"

To which Colin responded with something like "I've been told by someone who would know, that yes the shift is out." (OOOH Colin has an inside source)

    Cohost - "WOW."

The problem? MLB announced the banning of the shift starting in 2023 over two months ago.

    Dynamite scoop Colin.

To be fair his producer saved him a few seconds later

And I like chaos so I'd like to see all the Yankees fans I know lose their collective shit. So far I've heard fans saying they want Judge gone (haha, bullshit they actually want him to go), Cashman gone (might not be a bad idea), and saying they only want to keep a core of about five players and jettison the rest for whatever they can get. I'll be shocked if Judge isn't a Yankee next year.

Hell, at this point I'm hoping they sweep Philly just to see a team go undefeated in the MLB playoffs.
Most of the people that are Astros fans are being so petty. Complaing in droves about how sports announcers are giving away their pitchers pitches on the broadcast, going nuts when they get blanked by just focusing on a Philly fan giving that mattress guy shit and then turning around and giving mack all the credit for the win the following game and barely mentioning a no hitter. So basically, they blame announcers for cheating which is rich in itself when the pitcher was tipping his pitches more than anything and then focusing on a mattress seller when they should be pumping up their pitchers.

I think it should be at least mentioned how undenialbly valuable the years' long derision this squad faced was for them. Just to the degree that all the boos and the hate and the criticism did to galvanize this team and this fanbase can't be overstated. I believe it instilled a seemingly tangible never say die resiliency that was flat out undeniable as the season and postseason wore on.

I remember reading just how bad they were going to get it from Philly fans who were more rabid as ever for their red hot team of destiny, who were going to give the lowly Astros the demoralizing kind of hostile treatment that they couldn't possibly be prepared for. All the 'we want Houston' stuff that NY had to swallow, the Phils thought that like nah they were special and they really wanted that. Except give me a fucking break and they absolutely got it just like NY. This team was forged iron made from the white hot heat of every other teams/fans hate and by the time they arrived in Philadelphia they were utterly impenetrable.

What a run. What a wholly satisfying run.

    Honestly, thanks y'all..

First big free agent signing of the off season: Edwin Diaz re-signs with Mets for 5 years/$102 million. Opt-out, full no trade clause, and a 6th year option.

Steve Cohen is not fucking around this off season. deGrom is expected to seek a deal with more than Scherzer's and Brandon Nimmo will probably get at least $100 million. Not saying they'll both sign again with the Mets but there's potential for it to happen. I can't wait for the inevitable headlines that every free agent is going to meet with the Mets.

They basically toured the country getting shat on.

By winning the World Series the Astros have exonerated themselves of any past cheating allegations. I mean yes they still cheated, but history will now forget it or not care about it because they won a second title. Sure the team is mostly different (I couldn't say exactly how many players got both rings), but it's close enough. This is how you shut up the haters. Well done.

That monster of a home run in game 6 will be replayed into eternity.

lol at thinking winning a second title somehow will make people forget about the cheating. that's absurd.

The comparable situation would be if those guys got clean and won MVPs or World Series after testing was implemented. Look at David Ortiz - no one cares that he did steroids because he was dominant for another decade after testing started.

I used strong/provocative language there in saying they’re exonerated but you get my point. Winning a clean title means the asterisk from the last title substantially fades away.

I think the Yankees will retain Judge, because they're the Yankees and they'll match the market value. But I'm not sure if they're in luxury tax hell or whatever which would result in them letting him slip away.

I hope the Red Sox keep Bogaerts but I'd say that's a 50-50 prospect.

Everybody seems to think the Braves are the Mets biggest competition for Degrom. I'd be very surprised because the kind of money he's going to command just isn't Atlanta-ish to spend. The Mets are already showing that they intend to spend like the money is going to rot so I think he'll just wind up back in NY.

I'm 50/50 about him leaving. I can see him wanting to go elsewhere to try to win a ring and maybe get some run support.

Either way, I think he gets a short deal with the highest AAV to this point. With his injury history there's no chance of a long term deal. Mets have said their primary focus is re-signing Nimmo and Diaz. To me that suggests they know he's not going to sign with them or that they have no doubts he'll sign. Otherwise why wouldn't they make him a priority?

I think the Yanks HAVE to re-sign Judge or else that's going to roil up a fanbase that is already pissed about how the season ended.

I'd Def agree with the injury history issue. Another reason the very practical Braves won't sign him. I could also see LA signing him though. I mean they legit to do not give a FUCK what the luxury tax is in LA.

Apparently the Mets and Yankees didn't collude to suppress the potential value of Judge's deal. Next up, MLB should investigate if anyone actually gave a shit about the possibility of collusion in this case.

Reports are that the Mets balked at the years, not the no-trade or dollars. Six years is an awful lot for a guy who just missed a full calendar year of baseball. But hey, I wish him the best. I hope he gets some run support and can make a run at a ring. Not sure if the Rangers are the place to do it but what do I know.

I’m interested in seeing how Cohen reacts. Does he blow up the pitching market by signing everyone he can? Does he offer Judge a bag just so he can make a splash?

Yep. This is a “best of a bad situation” type scenario. It would have been soul crushing if he went to another NL East team. Getting to the AL West I’m fine with.

Yeah I remember reading it last week or so and thinking “where the hell did that come from?” but here we are. Most of the other articles I read had him going to either the Mets or the Dodgers.

Verlander and/or Rodon is my assumption. Verlander would be a shorter, high AAV deal while Rodon would be a longer possibly lower AAV deal.

Here’s to hoping that it and the Winter meetings open a door to a few more guys getting signed so we don’t have to wait til spring training for everyone else.
David Schoenfield on ESPN had it in an article from last week.

Agreed, I want an actual hot stove this off season. Not ice cold stove until spring training.

Right, I hope that didn’t read like I didn’t believe you in the ESPN part, just he was someone else with it.

As for the Winter meetings, it’s the potential shortstop carousel that has my attention, for what should be obvious reasons. Between Trea Turner, Correa, Swanson….. that’s a lot of shortstops moving. Hopefully NO OTHER shortstops move teams…..

Nope didn’t read it that way, you’re good homie. I had to go check to make sure I wasn’t imagining it haha.

I can’t imagine which short stop you might be talking about. Perhaps one who may look good playing 2nd base in Queens?

    Nope…… can’t think of a single guy…..

In all seriousness, if the Red Sox don’t re-sign Xander…. Trade Devers by the deadline. He has made it known several times what happens with Xander will be a huge part in his future decision, and I just can’t deal with the Sox letting another full year go by only to know there is nothing you can do to keep your young, so god damn good, 3rd baseman

If Xander leaves is it time to do a full rebuild?

    yes

I just saw a report, (granted by a reporter I hate, but still) that Xander is meeting with teams and that the Red Sox "have not made a competitive offer".

    WTF

Al, I think this tweet from the aforementioned Carrabis best encapsulates RS fans feelings on it.....

"The reason Red Sox fans are so pissed even after four titles is simple. You can't make Papi go year to year and then pay Pablo and Hanley. You can't not pay Lester and then pay Price. You can't trade Mookie for an unsatisfactory return. You can't pay Story and not pay Xander."

The Red Sox are the only AL team I've ever cared for but I can't figure out what in the blue fuck they're doing over there half the time. I mean I do not get it. So much money but do they use a fucking dartboard and a blindfold to decide where to spend it?

It's Verlander so far. Two years, $86 million. No-trade clause, and a 3rd year option for $35 million. I like this deal. If he sucks it's only two years, if he's good it's three. Now do Rodon.

Phillies went out and showed Turner love to the tune of 11 years and 300 milly. Full no trade clause too.

Jon Heyman trying to destroy baseball Twitter is going to end up being my favorite part of the offseason.

Getting Verlander out of the AL makes me happy as a Yankees fan.

End Clemens and Bonds career in 1999. They are both HOF players. Sad the writers won't admit it.

If Pete Rose couldn't get in while alive then they can both wait too.

Pere should absolutely be in as well. As a player.

Maybe we should ask Roger Maris Jr his thoughts on Pete Rose in the HoF. He appears to have so many thoughts now that he is trying not to fade away into irrelevancy now that his daddies record has been broken the 6th or 7th time.

I never could buy any talk of him going anywhere else. Now 4 years from now when they want out of that money at 34 years old? Sure. He'll get traded.

Dude will be making $40 million for the year he turns 40 years old.

Boo birds will be out in force for Judge as soon as he gets hurt or doesn't hit 50 homers in a season. Not hitting .300? Have some boos.

Good for him. Since last year he rejected a 7-year, $213 million contract to bet on himself, he went out and earned two more years and $150 million more.

As for the boo birds, he understands what he's gotten himself into. He's been a teammate of Giancarlo Stanton fer goshsakes.

If I’m getting paid stupid money like that, you can boo me all you want…talk shit at me while I’m eating dinner in a restaurant, I don’t give a fuck.
