Hooray for Opening Day! I gotta like my Yankees' chances with that lineup and killer bullpen. But I thought the same thing last year, when I was worried about the Red Sox starting pitching. The Sox have no bullpen and that will slow them down this year.

Hopefully somebody on the Mets is sacrificing a cigar and some rum to Joe Boo so they have a good season.

when will Craig Kimbrel sign? lol. At his point his value must be shrinking based purely on the fact that he'll be missing the start of the season. I mean even if he signs today he still has to get his arm ready for major league action by simulating spring training.

I'm holding out the bleakest hope that the Red Sox re-sign him now that he's still unsigned and maybe his price tag has decreased.

He’s waiting for you guys to blow a few games then wait for you to come begging for him. Really I don’t think he can play that game for too long though.

Brewers intentionally walking Goldy when he was looking for his fourth home run was low.

I could see a team like the Brewers giving him a nice payday with Knebel done. Other than that, I really wouldn't be surprised if he sits out until after the draft. No one will have to give up a pick and he can market it like a trade deadline pickup where some team doesn't have to trade prospects to add to their bullpen.

Only problem with the Brewers signing Kimbrel is they are already pretty close to the maximum of payroll capacity.

Harder-Kimbrel would be one hell of a 1-2 punch. The 8th and 9th innings would be covered.

It makes sense and is certainly a more appropriate title. It will just take some adjustment.

In other news, the Red Sox lost 3 of 4 at Seattle to start the season despite averaging 6 runs a game because all 4 of their starters gave up 5+ runs. Not a great start for the rotation.

Looks like Bogaerts is getting a 7 year, $132 million extension. Opt out in 2022 and vesting option for 2026

great deal for both sides, mainly for the team (getting him at 20 mil a year which is a bargain in this day) but the opt out gives him a chance to cash in at age 29 if he keeps playing at a high level.

Yeah it's definitely a great deal for both team and player. You really can't complain about getting Bogaerts level of production for 20 mil a year, that's a steal. Next up is Betts? What do you think he gets, if you had to take a wild guess?

deGrom is nasty right now. Really for almost the past year. Last night he tied Bob Gibson's record of 26 consecutive quality starts while also extending his own MLB record of 31 straight starts with 3 or less runs allowed. He's also the first pitcher since 1908 to throw back to back scoreless starts of 10+ Ks and 1 walk. Not shabby.

In his last 26 starts (since 5/18/2018) this is his stat line:
    1.55 ERA
    185.2 IP
    237-34 K-BB ratio

Mets actually look like they have an offense decent enough to get him a lot more wins this year as well. If they stay healthy. Usually Wilson Ramos is a walking injury waiting to happen. Right now they are looking good.

I, for one, wouldn't mind a deGrom versus Scherzer match-up with the division on the line in September.

They can have that match up for a wild card berth

Can't wait for the Tigers to win the World Series this year. They'll trade for Verlander from the failing Houston Astros at the deadline and win it all.

Id be happier if he just keeps winning games.

I know the sabermatricians have brainwashed a generation that pitchers wins aren't important, BUT. dammit, the point of playing a game is what? Winning, correct? It's hardly trying to have the lowest walks or the most k's per walk or 9ip...

Does it matter if you win 2-1 or 8-7?

Think hard baseball fans and fellow stat crunchers because this is a tough one to answer...

    No, it does not.

Yes, last year was THE aberration of all aberrations, But that will never, ever occur again in our lifetimes and should never be the criteria we go to if we are to determine the value of the 'pitchers win'. After alll, a pitcher has to have something to go for...

If you can The win, can the save, which is a much dumber stat, and not even suggested until 100 years after baseball started, in 1969.

Sure, winning is winning. That's not what is being debated.

What IS being debated is whether or not we should use the W as a metric to measure how effective a starting pitcher is. Using your example, does it matter if a starting pitcher gives up 1 run or 7 runs? Obviously a starting pitcher giving up 7 runs isn't nearly as effective as a pitcher who gives up only 1 run. Wins are only a measure of how effective a complete team is, NOT how good a pitcher is. ERA, BB/9IP, K/9IP, all of those reflect only on the pitcher.

Wins should never be measured against a pitchers overall ability and effectiveness. ERA and WHIP are the statistics every analyst should look at, and that's about it.

I think wins and loses speak to that pitchers leadership and ability to rally the troops. For instance, Homer Bailey had some nice games in Cincinnati, but every-time he pitched our offense looked deflated. In those same situations, if they rolled out Castillo or Romano on the mound, the offense looked more driven to score runs and support the pitcher. Does that make sense?

quality starts should become more prevalent but with my modified rules:

    must pitch 6+ innings
must have an ERA of 4.00 or lower for the game.

this would mean if you pitch 6 innings and give up 3 runs, you do NOT qualify since your ERA is 4.5
if you pitch 7 innings and give up 3 runs, you DO qualify since your ERA is 3.86
if you pitch a complete game and give up 4 runs, you DO qualify.

bingo bango, a perfect stat for starting pitchers.

I dig it, especially the ERA under 4.00 for the game.

People are saying Ozzie Albies just signed the worst contract in baseball history. 7 years, $35 million guaranteed, with two team options for $7 million each and a $4 million buyout, taking the contract’s maximum length and value to nine years, $45 million. For Ozzie Albies who hit 24 HRs last year at age 21. He can become a free agent again at age 31 if the Braves pick up his options.

    Woof. Good for the Braves.

I bet they still don't spend any money this year.

Lost to the Jays in a game Snell started. Is that record real?

Tough to turn down a guaranteed $35 million at 22 years old though.

I think it's surprising not to bet on yourself when you're very talented, put out an all star season in your first year (at age 21), and the reward for good players hitting free agency is somewhere in the range of of $150 to $400 million. And if you're going to take the safe approach, that's okay but he still should have gotten much more OR fewer years (thus allowing himself to hit free agency at, say, age 29 instead of 31).

$35 million has him set for life. More than he will ever spend after growing up with nothing. Imagine how he would feel if he didn't take it and then blew out a knee this summer and was never the same player again. I do get what you are saying though about him taking it for 5 years.

Here comes Vlad Jr, ready to join the Jays on Friday. I may have to get his rookie card to display next to his dad’s card in my office.

Bichette, Biggio, Guerrero Jr. There's got to be some draft-eligible players of former ballplayers the Jays can add to their collection.

    They also have Griffin Conine...

If Milwaukee don’t address the starting pitching it’s gonna be a long season.

I got to see Vlad Jr. when he visited the Yard Goats last fall - dude was clearly the best player on the field. Sure, everyone else was AA level, but he put on a show both at the plate and on the field.

How is the Yard Goats stadium? Thinking about taking the little one up to a game this year but Hartford is a bit of a drive.

It is a beautiful park - not a bad seat there. Really easy to get in an out of. Even though they took forever to build it, and played a whole year on the road because of the delays getting it built, they really did a nice job.

Concessions are typically over-priced, but really no worse than anywhere else. But you can't buy a bag of peanuts nor cracker jacks. A group of us went after work but there were plenty of famiies there.

As an old-timer, I wasn't expecting the pitch clock, but I have to say it was nice keeping the game moving along - most games take roughly 2 hours, so you will be able to get home at a decent hour even if you see a night game. The other thing I was sad about was that they were not selling scorecards - I always liked to score the game myself, and I have enjoyed teaching my kids, nephews and nieces, how to keep score, and then maybe to get it autographed later - a skill my dad/uncles/cousin taught me. Now I guess they have an app for that - but we've lost something special.

How old is the little one?

She just turned 13 months so we figured it makes more sense to try a "local" game before we head out to a Mets game and all that craziness. At least Hartford is about an hour away, shorter on the ride home if 84 is empty, so if it turns into a disaster we can head home instead of fighting traffic in NY. Plus we'd only be out a few bucks instead of the $200+ it'll cost to go to CitiField.

    Only the Mets. Sigh.

    http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2...ks-ankle-ranch

I don't expect Syndergaard or Wheeler to be on the Mets past July. Possibly Matz if they opt to keep Wheeler. It's a shame because I really enjoy Syndergaard's personality. Certainly Callaway is gone before the end of the season unless they're giving up on 2019 and plan to just let him captain the sinking ship so Brodie can pick his own manager. I'd like to see Girardi get the call, or Wally Backman.

Yankees losing CC now, their injured list is astonishing. But I came here to post about Gleyber - how is it possible that the Orioles are still pitching to this guy? He has hit 10 HRs off the O's this season, and is the first player in MLB history to have 10 of his first 12 HRs in a season come against the same team.

Yankees have been really good despite all their injuries. However, it feels like they've had the easiest schedule so far. They've played the O's like 12 times already?

It's a shame that a great hitter like him will always be remembered for that signature play he did not make. As a Yankee fan living in NY at the time, I was in a no-win situation in 1986. But as a baseball fan, I had a lot of respect for what Buckner brought to every game. To that extent, I found the silver lining after the Red Sox won their World Series, that their fans (many of my friends and relatives) were able to forgive Buckner - allowing him to throw out the ceremonial opening pitch in 2008.

If the Sox hadn't won, fans would still be complaining about Buckner, even though he won them many more games than he cost them.

Dallas Keuchel signs with the Braves and will get 13 million (prorated from 20). Will other players think twice about making Boras their agent, since he advised Keuchel to forego the $17.9 million offer from the Astros?

No, I don't think it will make them think twice about hiring him as their agent. If the past two free agency periods are the new normal, however, players will probably need to temper their expectations in regards to contract length and value.

There is video of the shooting on twitter. A guy cold bloodedly shot him in the back out of nowhere (seemingly). They’re saying it was a robbery but it looks like an assassination attempt.

David Ortiz told ER doctor “please don’t let me die. I’m a good man”

One report says he’s stable thank god. But possibly still in surgery for another hour.

Cautiously optimistic on reading reports that he's out of danger, heavily sedated and will remain in intensive care for at least 24 hours. Having not just a whole city, but also his whole country, praying for him can't hurt.

Saw the video of the guy who did it getting his head kicked in. Pretty stupid to rob one of their country's most popular guys in such a crowded place. I am surprised he didn't end up dead.

The RUMOR I heard is that he had a mistress who was also involved with a drug lord. The drug lord put out the hit on Ortiz. Ortiz had been warned that he was in danger. No idea if it's true.

And I believe the word is that the second best offer he got was from the Yankees for 11 million.

Good news for my Braves though. He's going to pitch his ass off trying to get a contract.

The guy who got his face kicked in after the Ortiz shooting says he isn’t the shooter and was just the motorcycle taxi who took the shooter to the club unknowingly. He’s under arrest and has been charged already, though.

hmm. if he’s telling the truth then the shooter may still be at large and also he might not have deserved the ass kicking of the century. Although even if he was just the driver he still may be more involved than he’s claiming.

Either way I’m not happy if the shooter is at large. Fuck that.

Heard from my local news that it was a hit from a local drug kingpin because Ortiz slept with his wife. Ballsy if true.

Boys, if a baseball game is scheduled to start at 1:20 then will it actually start at that time? Your MLS games say they will start at 7 or something and will actually start 30 mins after that.

First pitch is generally within a couple minutes of the start time, unless there’s a weather delay.

Yeah they may have dicked around more in the past but MLB has a huge stick up their ass these days about getting games started quickly and moving them along.

Unless there’s a ceremony beforehand for a player or something like that.

The Mets new pitching coach was born just two years after Babe Ruth's last AB. I can't imagine this is going to go well.

When the Mets new pitching coach was a rookie MLB, his first manager was born in the 1800's

I am excited to see Pujols back in St. Louis after all this time. Sad it took so long, but I am sure he is going to get an ENORMOUS welcome from the crowd.

When he started his minor league career in 1956 the first ever Cy Young award had not even been handed out yet.

What an immaculate career he had for the Cardinals, including their decision to let him leave.

Unfortunately he hasn't done much since for the most part, but he's still been a staple of the city. Great guy though.

Congrats to the NY Yankees for doing something no team has ever done before in the history of baseball. They have homered in 28 straight games.

    Enjoy the game.

Doubt it will be as good as last nights game WOW crazy game. Loved every minute of my first ever baseball game, atmosphere was good and everyone getting on having a laugh. Over 4 hours too can’t complain about that.

That’s def different, as most baseball fans I know would be miserable at the idea of watching a 4 hour game. Though I suppose being there may be different.
