    Speaking of championship cities..

The Boston Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots hadn't won a championship since '86, '18, and never respectively.

Tom Brady arrives and they collectively win 11 championships in 20 years.

The Tampa Lightning, Rays, and Buccs have only won championships in '04, never, and '02 respectively, and nothing in 16 years since.

Brady arrives and they get already get an immediate Stanley Cup, a World Series berth, aannndd.. well, we'll see.

    Tom Talisman.

Can't forget Boston Bruins who were 1972 before winning in 2011.

Really though it's the Red Sox and Patriots who hold the balance of those 11 championships.

Wow, totally blanked on the Bruins. Thanks, yo.

Not a hockey follower but the Stanley Cup was recent with Tampa's win.

The Dodger almost have to win this series. They built and bought another championship team and to lose out again would be embarrassing.

Kershaw has a lot riding on this as well. For one of the generational greats he has completely stunk it up in the post season. A dominant performance would just help cement his greatness but with his track record of getting hurt I am not sure he can pull it out.

Kershaw and Betts make as much as the entire Rays team.

For that reason alone, let’s go Rays.

I can't bring myself to root for the Rays because they represent so much of what is wrong with today's game. Using the defensive shift too much, and regularly using "openers" instead of starting pitchers.

So unsurprisingly Manfred says he wants continue expansion of the postseason.. and I don't disagree.

16 teams is too much but I think a 12 team playoff format would be fun. Two wildcard matchups per league with two byes for the best two records in each league.

Strong disagree. But I went into this season not liking the DH in the NL and I like it now.

Don't know if I'll ever come around on expanded playoffs though. This season it made sense so I delt with it but going forward I'm not a fan.

And if they even think of keeping the goofy "extra innings starts with a guy on 2nd" shit I will...well I'll bitch and moan is what I'll do.

I'm usually pretty conservative about these kinds of things. I don't like the additional playoff teams in football for instance.

But I think baseball may be the exception. There's kind of a sweet spot for not losing the regular season and keeping a playoff race hot. I think the NFL has had it down for years now, with 37.5% getting a playoff berth, and hence my not wanting it to change. I think the NBA is a bit ridiculous with over half the league - 53% - making the postseason. And finally MLB is on the low end with only 30% of teams getting through.

12 teams would bump that to 40%, which is at kind of the arbitrary threshold I'm getting at. Enough that the regular season doesn't become a joke and we don't see fluke championship runs, but also enough that a late playoff push includes more than a couple markets and the playoffs themselves have a full opening round building to a hot LDS and LCS, etc.

Probably won't convince you, and I totally get that, just figured I'd type it all out for whatever. I honestly think it'd be pretty effin fun.

all these boston people/media complaining about how much the Red Sox bungled it, and it's true, but whatever. to me that story is already old and it's just needless dirt rubbing in wounds, or woe-is-me boston fandom mentality popping back up. Mookie's in the world series. I love Mookie. Enjoy baseball. enjoy watching him. We won the world series 2 fucking years ago, and if not for some of those other financial burdens that prevented us from signing Mookie we might not have that 2018 title. it is what it is.

And no this isn't the Babe Ruth deal all over again because baseball is a bit different than it was in 1920 so quit with that comparison.

(this was not directed at you just at all the sulking I see on red sox/boston sports twitter)

Justin Turner played most of Game 6 then, according to Fox, was pulled because he tested positive for covid-19. They pulled him DURING the game. Scandal? Did they really get the rest results back at 11PM eastern time?

I am glad, as are the Dodgers, that Cash pulled Snell when he had only given up 2 hits. F the Rays. Congrats to the Dodgers.

Turner's test before the game was inconclusive. They tested him again, and the results came back during the game, so he was pulled and sent to quarantine, however, he joined the rest of the team in the celebration after,

This is a bullshit season anyway, so put a giant asterisk by the Dodgers' win.

Eh they played under the same rules and conditions as the rest of us. No asterisk needed.

I'd LIKE to think that if MLB had let the teams know that there would be no days off during the first three rounds of the playoffs BEFORE the trade deadline that the Braves might've made a push to sign someone, anyone, decent which would have gotten them to the world series but that's a big but. Liberty Media don't allow the Braves much wiggle room to spend.

Speaking of which, unless you root for another AL east club, how could you not have been rooting for the Rays in the series? L.A. bought this title just like most teams do. The Rays have shit for payroll. They just pulled off a miracle getting this far. Way to go Rays.

    A badillion percent this.

Level playing field, everyone gave lots of fucks to be the one, and one team did it. Fuck 'em, but they earned it and no asterisk needed.

It is crazy to think the Dodgers had not won a title in my lifetime until now. It was a fun series to watch, even if pulling Snell was a questionable move.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to BigAl again.

More fallout/details from the Turner Covid situation. It seems that MLB knew he tested positive by the second inning. They had to notify the Commissioner and the Player's Union to discuss protocol, about removing him from the game. Remember what the NBA did as soon as Rudy Gobert tested positive, they shut down the whole sport for months. When other players tested positive earlier this season, the teams were shut down for a couple days. Because of the money involved, MLB clearly wanted the Dodgers to win that night, as they didn't want to wait another couple of days (and go against Thursday Night Football).

But once Turner was pulled from the game, he should have immediately been quarantined, not allowed to stay in the dugout with the other players/coaches (including manager who is a cancer survivor and has weakened immunity) any longer, especially not allowed to participate in the celebration. This is an embarrassment for the sport.

I feel there's a good chance I would've done exactly what Turner did, so I sympathize with that situation. But I would've likewise known I'd be staring down the barrel of some rough discipline, as I also feel is warranted here. Just a miserable situation all around.

Question I think is interesting is what level of punishment would make one regret doing what Turner did? Is there one? Maybe if someone becomes gravely ill traced back to him.

It'll be interesting to see reactions from fans relative to their opinions of covid protocol overall.

Throw a full season at Turner, he was a fucking idiot for doing what he did, particularly if somebody associated with the Dodgers gets ill/dies. If the union wants to grieve it, so be it.

That said, if I was in Turner’s shoes, I’d be very tempted to do the same damn thing: the biggest moment of my professional career, you better believe I’m going to enjoy it as much as I can. If the league wants to suspend me, so be it.

Suspending for a full year would probably be beyond the ability of the league who didn't suspend people who actively cheated the game.

I believe Pabs was referring to the players.

A full season is a bit harsh. I imagine he will suffer a fine and that is it. Maybe a larger fine like the NFL coaches.

Just pointing out that the league has that kind of authority.

The difference with the players involved in sign stealing is that the league and players union had already struck an immunity agreement. No one is immune from covid violations.

I know they had the immunity agreement, but they should never have agreed to it.

And it's not a matter of authority, it's a matter of them not having the intention to do such a thing.

Really I personally have difficulty suspending him for any longer than they do for pitchers who throw at a batters head.

Why are you trying to play a semantics game here.

Do you think the league, as it's currently run by Manfred, would suspend a player for a year?

    Not for this.

But he isn't letting Pete Rose back in baseball either

It's not semantics for me to try and pin down what you're wording (I assume on accident) differently from one post to the next.

And I honestly don't know if he'd do it, but I wouldn't bet on it. I don't think they agreed to the immunity out of the goodness of their hearts. They wanted answers and they wanted to avoid a league-wide scandal.

They've got most all of the answers they need here already and it's a local problem, not league-wide. And the optics are pretty terrible.

As a Cubs fan you should understand the attitude of Mets fans not wanting to celebrate until things are complete. I’ll wait for the Wilpons to actually hand over the keys before I celebrate them being gone because I fully expect them to try to fuck us Mets fans one last time.

The deal is done and approved by NYC, MLB, and the MLB owners group. It’ll be about 10 days before the Wilpons fully transfer ownership to Cohen.

That said, the Wilpons are down to their last few days of being in control of the Mets. Fuck them. I can’t wait to see what Cohen does to get this team to be successful. I don’t think he’ll come in and spend a ton of cash immediately but I think there are some trades coming in order to restock the farm system, which is ranked 20th overall. Maybe they try to get Bauer but I doubt he ends up on the Mets. Should be interesting and it’s a much needed change.

I'm excited for the mets and their fans. not super excited for a dominant team in the NL but I hope and pray they just steal a ton of the Yankees thunder.

It’ll be a while before the Mets are stealing anybody’s thunder or even considered anything close to dominant.

Hey in a league with no real salary cap anyone can get good real fast. And you've got a couple pieces there right now. Granted I pretty much only catch the games they play against the Braves but I feel like they aren't terribly far away.

Problem is the division. Sure the Braves were the only good thing in it this year but the Marlins are getting better fast, the Phils suck but we know they'll spend until something clicks, the Nats had an off year after losing their best pitcher to injury and best hitter to free agency but we know they'll keep spending as well.

NL East is about to be fire.

Mets writers have been all over a Lindor trade, why it would work, and what it would take. I don’t know if they’d be willing to part with the pieces it’ll take to get him.

It will be interesting since he only has 1 year left on his deal. Mets would need to do something special to keep him after next season.

Angels and Yankees will probably be heavily rumored.

And don't get me wrong, I completely understand why Turner did what he did. Your team just won the World Series. But the lack of any punishment, even a token punishment, from MLB is damning.

Rumor is the Indians want Pete Alonso in a trade with the Mets for Lindor...hard, hard pass for me. Trading Alonso for what could be a one year rental isn’t something Cohen should be thinking about doing. Even if they end up signing Lindor to a long term deal I think I’d rather have Alonso, especially if the DH is staying in the NL.

Agreed. Pete Alonso is probably too steep a price to pay for a one year rental.

Besides, I'd prefer that the Yankees acquire Lindor as long as the price tag isn't too high. They need a LH bat in that lineup.

Random question: is Jon Lester a hall of famer?

My answer: I like him so I'd like to see him in, but ehhhh. I think Curt Schilling is a good comp. Schilling's career is slightly better, and he isn't in but he's on the borderline.

Lester: 193-111, 3.60 ERA (2.51 ERA in postseason on 154 IP)
Schilling: 216-146, 3.46 ERA (2.23 ERA in postseason on 133 IP)

Both have had good playoff success with 3 titles to bolster their resume.

    Thoughts?

I think he needs to crack the 200 win club for a better chance. I know wins is a silly stat, but those who vote for the HoF are older and value the original stats.

It's tough to make an argument for the baseball hall just off that.

He came 2nd once and 4th twice in Cy Young voting.

It's hard to make the baseball hall if you aren't one of the most dominant pitchers for a period of time. He also never really led a season in any of those traditional stats outside of one year with the Cubs when he had the most wins.

If this was the NBA or NFL, for sure he'd be in. MLB, I don't think he makes it.

Then again Johan Santana not being on the ballot for more than 1 year is absolutely insane to me as he was the most dominant pitcher (alongside Doc) for around 4-5 years. But I guess he didn't maintain it for long enough.

I don' think Lester is a Hall of Famer. I think he's close to Mike Mussina in that he wasn't always the best but he's consistently very very good. But Mussina eventually got in even though he never had won a CY Young nor a WS ring.

Andy Pettitte deserves to be in the Hall of Fame well before Lester. And he appeared on less than 10 percent of the ballots.

Stroman accepted the Mets’ $18.9 million qualifying offer. No way that happened if the Wilpons were still around.

And Mets fan sites/Reddit are lit up about Bauer joining the Mets. Apparently he and Cohen have had some back and forth on Twitter. Cohen scored some points with Bauer by saying baseball is an entertainment business, which Bauer responded to by agreeing and saying some nice things. Let’s see if they both are willing to get a deal done. A rotation of deGrom, Bauer, and Stroman sounds good to me.

Also, Tony La Russia can go fuck himself. Another DUI and he tried to get out of this one by saying “you see my ring? I’m a hall of famer, brother. You’re trying to embarrass me.” Fuck him for driving drunk AGAIN.

Both Freeman and Abreu were well deserved. It'll be interesting to see how this offseason goes. A lot of team's will probably spend lightly, but is sounds like the Mets' new owner will be spending big. He has been flirting with Trevor Bauer on twitter already

Fingers are crossed that Cohen puts his money where his mouth is. It also helps the team had a few bad contracts come off the books this offseason, so they have money to spend. Cohen said his goal is a championship in 3-5 years so if he’s serious Bauer would be a big step in that direction.

Robinson Cano is a dumbass and got busted for the same PED again so he’s gone for the entire 2021 season. That also means the Mets don’t have to pay his $24 million salary next season, which is more money they can put into free agents potentially. I dig it.

Isn't this suppose to be one of the easiest steroids/performance enhancing drugs that can be spotted on a test? A guy who has a 200 million dollar contract should be able to buy the drugs that are harder to see.

Their logo is what ultimately did them in. Chief Wahoo had been a problem for a long time and getting rid of it didn't stop the pressure to change the name.

I'd definitely go with the Cleveland Rocks. Built in theme song.

Personally, I am generally annoyed that athletes use drugs and other nasty things. Well, in that sense, they have huge fees - for what? For booze and drugs? While many people can barely make ends meet. Of course, we can say that everyone is the smith of his own happiness. But I don’t think that huge fees are paid for drugs, steroids and other rubbish? Where are the old sports ideals?

I don't think it should. I hope not. I think you could remove the Indian theme and still keep the name Braves.

As for the Cleveland Indians, I'm fine with them changing it. Although not a full on slur like Redskins, it's still just the name of the race of people who we genocided. It's almost like having a team called Negroes. As opposed to Braves, which at least has a positive connotation (meaning warriors/heroes).

Don't know what the new name should be. I just read this article and all the suggestions stink.

The Braves if they want to keep their name really need to change the imagery.

More so that it's an inaccurate name of a race of people we genocided, and even more flippantly disrespectful.

    Basically..

I have no problem with the concept but the fact that there are not really stats for many games makes it not as useful as it could be.

Yeah its cool. I mean, baseball has one of the great American stories of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier and changing baseball forever. The Negro Leagues are part of that story. Obviously those players deserve to be recognized in the history books as Major Leaguers but the distinction is an important part of baseball and American history.

Padres trading for Snell and Darvish. Good trades for them.

It's so weird that the Padres are really trying to win.
