You see I feel the exact opposite. It's TOTALLY fine to overpay on a one year rental because it's just one year.

Granted my vision may be clouded by how well the last couple one year rentals went for Atlanta. And it's not like the team is spending very much so far.

I agree and have been saying this about the Twins heading into the season. We know the market is down this year so a lot of players are ok with a 1 year deal and hit the market next year after a normal season. Over pay someone for one year and take a shot. You are not stuck holding the bag long term.

Overpaying in dollars on a one year contract is fine. I meant overpay in terms of giving up a ton of prospects for a one year rental. The Mets don’t have a deep farm system so they definitely shouldn’t be looking to pillage it.

So the Braves finally made their big move. Bringing back Marcel Ozuna. Which is...odd. I kind of figured he wasn't going to happen for us when the league wouldn't settle on the DH for the NL early in the offseason but then, nobody signed him. Then some time passed and it was made more clear, no DH in the NL. So I figure ok now we for sure aren't signing him back because while his offense was insane last year (179 wRC+) he was just a natural fit for a dh slot somewhere because his fielding leaves something to be desired.

Goodness. It leaves one desiring and wishing that he was good at it. Because he is not.

Also the figures are far lower than many thought he'd get. 4 years at the mid 60s is what's being reported. With a team option on the 5th year to bring it to 80.

That means he's probably playing for less than the 18 million he got last year during his "prove it" season where he lit the world on fire and made a serious run at the elusive NL Triple Crown.

All in all I'm fine with it though. We needed a big bat, a righty as well, to keep Freddie Freeman hot and we have that now.

Only order of business that's left now is to sign Freddie to that long term extension that we all know he's getting.

Go Braves go. Run it back.

    Benitendi.......

Fuck man. I know he suddenly hit a sharp decline inexplicably for a couple years, but I was really hoping he could bring it back this year. Hopefully the change in scenery will do him good.

As of right now, my entire outfield from the 2018 Championship is gone....

I like the Mets being involved in that trade. They traded Matz for the Jays 26th ranked prospect and flipped that guy to the Royals for their 8th ranked prospect. Good trade.

Another Mets coach has been fired for sexual harassment. Get rid of these guys ASAP if they’re guilty. It’s really not difficult to not be creepy.

I’m not too upset by what the Mets have done in regard to these stories. Callaway was gone by the time Cohen came in and he apparently had been doing it in the ‘land as well. Porter, the GM, didn’t do anything wrong as a Met. His transgressions came when he worked for the Cubbies. They fired him immediately.

This hitting instructor had complaints against him in 2018. The Mets put him on probation while also telling the person making the complaints that she needed more evidence. She found it and gave it to the Mets in January of this year. This guy was immediately fired. I’d say Cohen is doing exactly what needs to be done to change the culture and show the Mets have a zero tolerance policy about harassment.

    Baseball is back tomorrow.

I can't say I know enough about any team outside of my own division so here's my division prediction.

    NL East

    Braves - 96 wins
    Mets - 93 wins
    Washington - 83 wins
    Philly - 78 wins
    Marlins - 68 wins

If the Mets play to their expectations I think the NL East will be the most exciting race in MLB this year.

    It really could be.

So many big questions though. How good can the Nats be even though they're old and lack offense? If the pitching is good enough they could still contend. The Mets look in great shape but as a Met fan I know you've seen that blow up in your face a time or two. Philly keeps spending but are they getting any better? The Marlins are a couple seasons away. I feel safe saying that. Making it to the playoffs last year was a fluke.

I think the Nats will surprise some people this year. I don’t think Philly has the pieces but I could be wrong. Miami is the dark horse for me. I think they make a run late in the year when they get things figured out. They can definitely play spoiler, probably against the Mets if history is any indication.

Speaking of the Mets, they may not play until Monday depending on the Nats Covid situation.

I’m jealous of the west coast.

Padres/Dodgers looks like it’s gonna be a banger all year round, and I’m in bed way before their games start. Sucks.

Fucking Dansby Swanson burned Sage in the stadium to get out the bad mojo.

It seems to have worked. Today at least.

He’s going to opt out after next season and find a team to give him better run support. Mets have two years to win a World Series.

This Mets fan won’t. I feel bad for the guy because I know he’s frustrated but he’s far too polite to publicly complain about it. With a .50 ERA he should be 4-0.

At least he’s showing that wins don’t mean anything for a pitcher. I’ll be happy when that metric isn’t counted for the Cy Young award. Wins aren’t an individual stat, it’s a measure of team success.

I think it has been in his case. Look at his last few years, his win total against his amount of starts is paltry...... but his era nearly impossible to beat.

I mentioned to a chat last night that if you took 18 and 19, he has 64 starts and only 25 wins..... but his era is right around 2. It’s ridiculous.

Yet he shifts the blame on himself last night for the second inning, when he gave up a lone run.

If it were most guys, they'd be flat out saying "WTF, our offense sucks!"

That’s because he’s a team-first kind of guy. The Mets are beyond lucky to have him and they’re going to lose him. It’s a shame. I mean I understand the entire team is slumping right now but it’s the same story every time he takes the mound.

Lots of concern that the Braves aren't going to offer Freeman enough to keep him. The fanbase will go nuts if they dont. Me included. There would be riots in the suburbs of west Atlanta. But I'll tell you this.

I'd be ok with letting Freeman walk if they signed deGrom instead.

Atlanta needs to flat out sweep this series against the Nats. It's tough though because half the team is hurt and the other half is in a slump except for Acuna.

First no-no of the year..... and it’s the Orioles?

No, I don’t count 7 inning ones. No one should.

EDIT Not the first. I’m an idiot apparently.

Angels to cut Pujols. Kind of sad to see. I was hoping he’d hit 700 homers.

I kind of figured he’d sign a one day contract to retire as a Cardinal but I don’t know how that works if he’s still owed $30 million for this season.

Braves bringing back reliever Shane Greene on a one year deal. He's been great for us the past two years but he wanted more money (more than any team wanted to pay him apparantly) and the Braves are...well the Braves are cheap. But they had no choice as the bullpen has been mediocre at best this season.

BigAl. deGrom. MRI tonight. You scared bro?

Nah. I’m expecting him to end up on the IL for 10 days and miss two starts. If there’s one upside to the Mets never giving him run support it’s that him missing a couple starts just means any spot starts can probably expect more run support haha.

I did like the stadium proposal phots that came out a few years ago. The article on ESPN's site has the following places for relocation:

    Las Vegas
    Portland
    Vancouver
    Nashville
    Charlotte
    Montreal

Where would you want them to go? Vegas and Portland are my top two choices. Nashville would be cool, but is on the opposite side of the country if you want to keep divisions intact.

I think they need to stay on the west coast so the divisions don’t get too messed up. I’d say Nashville but that’s so far from the rest of the AL West. Maybe Vegas is best.

The AL West has two teams in Texas, so I feel like that is as far east as they can go.

I'd be a fan of Montreal again too, but I thought the Rays were already looking in to moving there.

Portland would be cool with its rivalry with Seattle. But they would never pay for a stadium. I honestly can't see any city paying for a stadium in the current environment.

A few years ago, Russell Wilson invested in a group to bring MLB to Portland. Don't know if that would help stadium wise, but

    https://www.king5.com/article/sports...6-757ccd517b7f

Vegas does seem like a natural spot, but it would need to be a roofed stadium to get out of the heat in the middle of the season.

Considering Vegas just built a $2b football stadium, I just can't imagine them building a baseball one too.

The J&J in particular has been shown to not be great at preventing you from getting it, just preventing major symptoms, hospitalizations and deaths. Which is the main thing. Sucks from a covid protocol standpoint though.

Assuming no long term consequences, I don't think it is "assholish" to wish your sporting rivalry has nagging injuries. That is just sports banter…

No one should ever wish a players career ends (without a good reason), but everyone is happy when a rival rolls an ankle for two weeks.

It is totally fine for me to say that I want the Mets team bus to crash on the way to the game and for everyone on board to catch on fire because...

As of this moment (and I will let everyone know when this changes), I do not have the power to speak reality into existence using the power of my mind.

Would be cool but no. Not yet anyway.

Was not the best for injuries in our two series of sweeping you.

This did not age well given what happened to Pillar. That was brutal. I hope he’s not in a lot of pain.

Lol. First thing I thought was "why did I post that dumb shit and use the Mets for my example?"

Hope the guy is ok though. I mean obviously he isn't but hopefully nothing career damaging. I haven't heard any reports yet.

Aside from that still very excited about this series as I think it's these two teams battling it out down to the wire this season.

All I’ve seen so far is he has a broken nose and possible concussion. He tweeted out that he’s fine and made sure to point out that it was the game winning RBI haha.

They showed on the Mets broadcast that Webb was very upset after the inning when he was in the dugout, which is understandable. I hope this doesn’t give him the yips or anything. The Mets subreddit is already talking about giving him a standing O next time he pitches at Citi so he knows there’s no hard feelings.

If both teams can get healthy I still think it’ll one of the most exciting races this season.

The Angels really shows that baseball is such a complete team game.

In NBA or even NHL I'd say if you have the best player in the league and another player like Ohtani, your team is going places.

    Angels, sub.500.

    Hope he recovers quickly.

Yeah I can't stand all these injuries. And some of it is just rediculous. Ynoa was having an amazing season. And boy we needed it too because we can't keep the pitchers healthy at all. Then he has one bad game, gets pulled in the 4th inning, punches the bench in frustration and breaks his hand. Out for months.

Somebody tell Tony LaRussa this isn’t the 1970’s anymore as you shove his out of touch ass out the door.

Yes! Tony La Russa and his stupid page boy haircut can fuck off. I was pissed when they hired him.

If you have spare change rattling around in your car you can afford to trade for Cameron Maybin from the Cubs. He was traded to the Mets for $1, which is less than it would cost for the proverbial bag of balls.

Spencer Turnball of the Tigers throws a no nitter. 5 no hitters, and it is only mid-May. The record for most in a season is 8 in 1884. I think it will be broken this year.

This idea that batters need to protect the feelings of pitchers is ridiculous. If you don’t want someone to crater a 3-0 meatball when they’re up by 11 in the 9th, don’t throw them a meatball when they’re up by 11 in the 9th. It’s their job to score runs when they’re on offense just like it’s the defense’s job to stop the offense from scoring runs. Tatis Jr. was ok when he did it last year, Mercedes was right to swing away this year.

I agree that it is a bit silly, but in the case of the White Sox, the Twins had a position player on the mound. Does that move the needle at all?

Absolutely not. You have a position player on the mound because both your offense and defense sucked. It’s your fault. Wear it.

Also, my latest comment about Tony was due to him telling the media his rookie was “clueless” and that he will learn his lesson. Excuse me? Fuck off with this shit. They are all grown ass men being paid professional salaries. MLB ran an ad campaign a couple years ago about “let the kids play”...... unless of course it hurts the feeling of some 75 year old out of touch manager who’s best days are LONG behind him.

Never mind that, but you put in a position player because you don’t want to put in your bullpen. You wanna keep your guys fresh for the rest of the series against that team. That is your strategy there. Other team has every reason to keep scoring.

Nevermind the potential contract and arbitration impact down the road for these hitters.

To me it doesn’t move the needle but I can understand if someone else thinks differently. To me though the point always comes down to the fact that major league hitters have years and years of training to try to get a hit whenever they’re at the plate. Asking them to turn it off at certain times isn’t necessary no matter who is on the mound or what the score is.

I agree, but I think this would have blown over if LaRussa had just done all of this in the clubhouse.

Examples in other sports where people "ease off the pedal":

Football: When a team is winning by a large margin, they are expected to run the ball. Teams get criticized often running up the score (this excludes college football)
Basketball: You don't see LeBron dunking on people, or Steph Curry draining 3's when their teams are up by 20-30 points. They are benched for the rest of the game.

If it is acceptable in those sports, why not baseball?

I always thought the ball gets run in football to lessen the chances of a turnover, which could give the other team some momentum to get back in the game. Never really thought of it as not wanting to run up the score. But I’m with Bellicheck on this: if you don’t want the offense to score, stop them from scoring.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying about the other sports but I wouldn’t really be bothered if someone didn’t ease up off the pedal in football or basketball either.

In football it's strategic. They run the ball to limit potential turnovers and run out the clock, not because they're worried about whether or not the other team are a bunch of thin skinned babies. Same as basketball. Why tire out your stars and risk them getting injured if you're up by 30? It has nothing to do with easing off the gas because the other team are bunch of bitches, or these "unwritten rules" of sportsmanship. LaRussa should be more focused on knowing what the written rules of the game are since his lack of knowledge has already cost the Sox at least one game this season. I don't remember LaRussa crying about the Red Sox swinging for the fences and stealing bases on him when he had Yermin pitch an inning of relief to the Red Sox at the end of April when the White Sox were down by a lot. No unwritten rules about that? LaRussa is a chump.

Everything Caito just posted I agree with. Why shouldn't Yermin be doing everything he can to get his stats up? He's on a rookie contract, and his salary next year is going to be based on what his stats are this year during arbitration. Also, if you're concerned about the unwritten rules, don't trot out a position player to lob 50 mph meatballs to the opposing batters. Respect them enough to put a pitcher in.

Beyond that, fuck Tony LaRussa in general. He's an antiquated turd who's best days are well behind him. And his best days consisted of being an overrated drunken jack ass who's only meaningful contribution to baseball was turning a blind eye to the all roid freaks on the teams he managed.

This absolutely blows over if LaRusso chose to not say anything about it and say it in private. It would still be stupid, but no one hears about so we can’t say “What the fuck is this guy doing?”

To quickly add to the Yermin rookie status thing...... he also is a relatively old rookie. He is 28, which tells you he scratched and clawed his way for a decently long time in the minors. So he needs every stat possible when the time comes.

Swing my man. Swing away and fuck the haters, even if it is your own manager.

Are there players who complain about this kind of thing or is it mostly just dusty old managers and journalists/twitter?

Brian McCann was the league fun police for a while, from what I remember. Given the amount of current mlb players that have publicly supported Yermin, I’m guessing most players today think the unwritten rules thing is nonsense.

Yeah I don’t think there are many, if any, unwritten rules that aren’t nonsense. They can all die off and be forgotten.
