The Red Sox are 15-3 in extra innings games this year. That is pretty remarkable. They might get swept in the first round or win the World Series but either way it's been a hell of a season.

Don't know what I want more a Cubs/Red Sox world series or a Cubs/Yankees world series. Odds of either happening are low. However, both are pretty marketable World Series matchups with the Cubs/Indians rematch being up there as well.

The Cubs/Brewers series kinda ended on an unexciting note (compared with the other 3 games) with Quintana delivering an outstanding performance and complete game. Brewers just didn't seem to have any energy or momentum behind them at all today which I figured after yesterday's they would be pumped up to the max. Speaking of which, I am hoping Joe has a word with Heyward and Contreras who both had moments of seemingly not giving a shit when they came up to bat. I get it, you are up 5 runs and you hit a ball straight to infielder, but you should still hustle cause you never know.

Diamondbacks clinch a playoff spot today with the Cards and Brewers losing and Cubs magic number is 2!

Thoughts on MVP as we wind down the season? It seems like the AL comes downs to Judge vs Altuve, with Altuve probably in the lead. In the NL I'm guessing it'll be Goldschmidt.

Before september, Altuve had is locked up, but Judge is having a monster September to make it a race. He'll be the first rookie to hit 50 home runs. Also pumped the Twins will lose the wild-card game to the yankees. They could be the first team to lose 100 games, and go to the playoffs the next year. Remarkable, because they are doing it with almost the exact same roster.

I still lean towards Altuve. But Judge has gotten hot again so it makes it interesting.

Not only has Judge tied the rookie home run mark today, he also beat it. First rookie to 50.

    Amazing isn't it.

No doubt Altuve will win it in the AL. Judge hit bad form after the home run derby but will win the rookie.

But that's typically what power hitters do. They have a slump at some point. It's not surprising and it will probably happen again next year.

Judge has also cracked the all time top 10 for strikeouts in a season. The strikeout numbers for batters are just astounding these days.

I know. That's why I said, imagine "if" there was no slump. Dude could have challenged the all-time HR record. Just saying.

Phillies will be interesting to watch the next few seasons. Hoskins looks great, and they are building a solid core. I'm interested to see how JP Crawford fares.

Their offense looks set. They need like 2 quality starting pitchers with one being an ace.

Well the only playoff race still going is the AL East. Red Sox up 2 games with 2 to play. Need the win today so Sale doesn't have to pitch tomorrow.

and actually the 2nd NL wild card spot is still up for grabs. Rockies similarly up 2 with 2 games to play, so still some drama there. but these are the likely matchups:

    Houston vs Boston
    Cleveland vs NYY/MIN

    Nationals vs Cubs
    Dodgers vs Diamondbacks/Rockies

I will say... I think I was against the 1-game wild card playoff when it first got added but I now think it's a good change. I'm still not ecstatic with a 1-game playoff since it can be so flukey but that is outweighed by the benefit of keeping more teams alive and making the division races far more important.

I read an article about how the wildcard is handled in Korea, and it's two games. The road team has to win both ant the home team just needs one. The home team gets a big advantage obviously.

I'd be down for something like that. It still makes getting a wildcard birth a tough thing but also gives the better team a leg up.

I also wouldn't be opposed to a two game aggregate runs scored type of thing like in soccer but I know that's not happening.

Santana leads Twins to a first-round upset over the Yankees.

The Diamondbacks are too tough to lose to the Rockies. The D-Backs pitching will be the difference. While both teams can put up runs, the D-Backs have dominant pitching that will lead them to the series.

From there, it gets interesting, and honestly, very exciting. I can't remember the last time I was this pumped for the playoffs; probably since 2012 when the Reds were a top-tier team.

    Twins versus Indians
Indians over Twins is an obvious one, but it gets tricky from there.
    Winner: Indians in 3 games

    Red Sox versus Astros
If Verlander, Keuchel, and McCullers are all pitching at full stride, the Red Sox will NOT beat them. Altuve lead offense will be too much for a lackluster pitching staff to handle. Chris Sale can not pitch every game, and the Red Sox will feel that come playoff time.
    Winner: Astros in 4 games

    Nationals versus Cubs
Bryce Harper is back, and the 1-2 punch of the Nationals pitching will lead the hungry, hungry Nats over the Cubs. The question is, how tired will they be come round 2 after a daunting round 1 battle with defending champions? The positive for Chicago? They will have Harper in blue and white come 2019.
    Winner: Nationals in 5 games

    Dodgers versus Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks have been the thorn in the side of the Dodgers this year, beating them 11 of 19 games. It should also be noted that the series in late August against the D-Backs also led to the Dodgers September slump. If the Dodgers are Superman, then the D-Backs are their Kryptonite. All said, even Superman defeats his nemesis in the end. Kershaw, Bellinger, Turner, Darvish, and company will be too much to handle for the Diamondbacks, and the mighty and powerful LA franchise will take down their desert friends.
    Winner: Dodgers in 4 games

    More to come....

MLB set the record for most home runs ever this year. Also most strikeouts ever, which is incredibly a record that has been broken for 10 straight years. When I first read that stat I thought I had to be misinterpreting it. That's an insane trend. What do we make of this? I'm not a student of the game so I'm not sure what's causing these two all-time highs (HR's and K's) but I find this interesting.

5 of those 6 losses came in May/June time when Cleveland was a .500 team playing well below their means.

This is not May or June, this is a red hot, determined team with the best pitcher in baseball and a deep roster.

I think the Indians will make it to the ALCS, but the Twins will get at least one game. That is if they can beat the Yankees. My hopes are getting higher.

they get swept. I would love to see an Astros vs Indians ALCS. I also wouldn't mind a rematch from last year. However, I think we get Indians vs Dodgers.

If I find a good one for you I'll let you know CS. Mainly so that you can witness first hand the tragedy if you guys lose to the Twins.

Was a very entertaining first few innings. Still proud that the Twins made it to the playoffs. Now I get to enjoy the Indians sweeping the Yankees.

Sale vs Verlander is a pretty great pitching matchup. Verlander really dominated in the second half of the season. I'm going to miss the beginning due to this early start but should hopefully be a change from high scoring affairs we saw in the wild card games. Granted Sale has been shaky lately but still had a tremendous season and getting his first taste of the playoffs.

The Astros are going to be really tough for anyone to beat in a series. There's so much depth on the field for them.

Same goes for the Indians. I would list the Dodgers too, but they slowed an awful lot as the season wrapped up and Arizona went crazy after getting JD MAAAAAAAARRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTIIINNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZ

The announcers talking about Verlander being off when he only gave up two in six innings is telling to how hot he's been. This is the type of game where the Tigers would have run him out for another inning or two, until he got hit. Astros getting him out is really good.

I swear there is nothing better in sports than the atmosphere of playoff baseball, even if the Yankees just did nothing in the first inning. It's amazing.

Great games yesterday. The Indians looked dominant. Excited to see Indians/Astros in the ALCS.

I know playoffs don't count into MVP voting, but Altuve just had his coming out party, which is insane because he's been great for a while.

Altuve has been my favorite non-Mets player for the past couple seasons only because he's about my size and I like seeing a guy like that succeed.

Hockey playoffs are pretty good but yeah you're probably right. Weird during regular games though the crowd is shite. During all of the Redsox/Yankees I was expecting a lot better.

Is it possible to trade Strasberg to the Cubs like right now? He can just change into Jon Lester's uniform and come back out the following inning. Lester can go to the Nationals.

The ALCS is shaping up to be a great matchup. I will continue to hope for a Red Sox/Yankees playoff matchup because it would be awesome and it's been forever since we had one, but we are no match for the Indians and Stros.

Stros and Indians looking to make short work of their opponents.

Pleased as shit over the outcome of tonight's Cubs game. I thought stras had it wrapped up but the Cubs pitching was on top form tonight.

Cubs v Indians II could actually be pretty intriguing. I feel like these teams were built for the postseason.

Justin Verlander comes in to pitch relief and gives up 2-run HR. Ouch. Bad move.

Bauer on 3 days rest didn't seem like a good idea.
