    Three.

God if you had told me the Braves were going to score a total of 5 runs in game 3 and 4 and win both I'd have laughed. The pitching is just outstanding right now. Which it had to be.

Not feeling secure though. I just watched this same team plus Acuna and Ozuna lose to the Dodgers in the 2020 NLCS when up 3-1.

Jerry Remy passed away in the middle of his 7th bout with cancer.

Red Sox fans know how very much this absolutely sucks.

Jerry Remy visited my high school, filming a TV commercial for the Jimmy Fund while standing outside our baseball field. His line was about a local savings bank making donations to the Jimmy Fund for new customers, was "a great double play".

Our gym teacher/high school baseball coach was a friend of his, and while they were setting up filming the commercial, our coach had us run laps around the field for that "class". As a cross country runner back then, I could run the mile in under 5 minutes, so I raced a friend also on the team, we ran in to shower and change, and came back to watch the filming, as it was not something we'd regularly see while in high school.

After a few re-takes while they messed around with the light, Jerry said "Hang on, I need a cigarette", and he lit up. We were amazed that a professional baseball player was also a smoker, but this was the 80's and even the students (seniors) who were aged 18 were allowed to smoke at school back then in the senior lounge, and most of the teachers did as well.

Jerry walked right by us after his smoke, and he winked at us and said "nice tie" to my friend, who was wearing a Red Sox necktie.

Even though Remy was a leader of the hated Red Sox Nation, he always came off as a genuinely likeable guy, and he will be missed. Rest in Peace, Remy.

Keith Hernandez tells a story about being so stressed during a game in '86 that he smoked a whole pack of cigarettes in the dugout tunnel during the game. I mean with the amount of coke and greenies those guys were doing it's not shock they could smoke a pack in a couple hours and then still play baseball.

Atlanta better clinch tonight because if there’s a game seven, I bet Houston wins it.

I'm actually more convinced that if we win it it's going to be in game 7. Max Fried has been ok but not special in this post season where Ian Anderson has been amazing.

And the Braves tend to go the way of their starting pitching.

    Hip Hip Jorge!

That ball is officially in outer space.

Max Fried is 15-1 this season when working with a 3 run lead.

    Let's fucking go.

If you'd told me before the season started that after losing so many weapons that we'd be staring down a World Series gm 6 I'd have just shook my head. So I'm happy for another really strong season.

But it still fuckin stings. That damn close.

Congrats RP. Soak it up, bud.

You know it man! I'm getting stoned off my ass tonight fellas.

Amazing series. Astros just didn't have the starters healthy to make it work for the whole post season and I know that feeling well. Nothing but respect for the Stros and its time for the rest of the league and all of us fans to let the scandal go. That team had to die for the sins of baseball and it's in the past. This is a different team with one of the greatest baseball men of all time at the helm. Nothing but respect for this team.

Good God I wanna go back 25 years and tell myself all about this season. Losing so much but plowing through and playing like a true team of destiny in the playoffs.

The connection for me here goes back so far. Sure I love my Titans. But they didn't come here till I was a young man. The love I have for the Braves and vols football goes back to my childhood.

Nothing could feel better than this.

Not even if wrestling got good again.

The odds makers have Dodgers at 1, Stros at 2 Braves at 3.

As for Freddie, if they don't sign him (which they will be crucified for) at least he and we got the closure of him finally getting a ring for the Braves and hitting a homerun in his last at bat.

I would be surprised if they don't extend his deal though. The payroll isn't even what it has been in recent years and revenue was higher than expected this year. Freddie will come back for less than market value and has basically said as much. Just offer him something fair and let's get this done.

If they don't though, just God Jesus please don't let him become a fucking Yankee.

RIP Julio Lugo, who died from a heart attack at 45.

Where I used to work, one of the older guys on the building maintenance crew had the same first initial and last name. He won tickets to a Red Sox game in the blood donor raffle, and when the Red Cross found out he was a single dad who couldn't afford to take the day off, travel to Boston, etc., they got him an autographed "J. Lugo" jersey. Could not have made this guy happier.

Scherzer to the Mets for 3/$130 million. If deGrom comes back healthy, what a 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation next season. FIVE Cy Youngs between the two of them.

Please, Cohen, keep going. Blow all the way past the luxury tax. Sign everyone.

Hopefully they avoid a labor stoppage next season.

    Three to five years?

Had my Canucks been able to close in 2011, I would have spent the rest of my life content with a lottery team; just one Cup so I can die a happy man.

Hall of Fame voting results were announced.

David Ortiz is the only inductee.

Notable names of Clemens, Bonds, and Schilling fall off the ballot.

Yeah but this isn't a zero sum game for the press. They have their favorites and Ortiz is one of them. I'm just saying all those guys knew that performance enhancers could be used against them one day. But in the moment they chose performance over rep and it cost them.

I'm sure their just fine with it. I mean if it was me and millions of dollars were on the line I'd have looked like a fucking caveman out there. Fuck the hof.

I guess all I mean to say is I'm over it. I think with time everyone will be. Even the "purists" will designate the mid 80s to late 90s as the "steroid era" just like they have a dead ball era and we'll just take it as a blip on the radar.

But for now, those guys did what they did. Some will face longer lasting consequences than others and some will get in the hof while others have to wait. But those guys all knew the risks when they did what they did. McGuire had the best strategy, put the shit right on your locker shelf for all the world to see. And he's still half shunned. It's just the price. And it isn't fair and it isn't equal and isn't going to be for a long time at the very least.

Baseball writers are the fucking worst. Keepers of the holy integrity of the game that didn't even have black people in it until after WWII.

Ortiz getting in on first ballot is awesome. Obviously it's a sham that Bonds and Clemens didn't get in. And Schilling as well, to a lesser extent (I would have put him in, although I have gone back and forth on that over the years).

But let's not forget to celebrate the incredible career of Big Papi, who is not only the best DH of all time but one of the great postseason players of the past 25 years with 3 titles, a WS MVP and numerous huge game changing hits.

Imagine if he had stayed in Minnesota. He would have picked up at least another 5 opposite field hits and had probably 300 less home runs.

How do you release a first ballot hall of fame player to save $1 million and clear a roster spot for Matt LeCroy?

I am a Big Papi fan. Our Boston Terrier was named Lil Papi after him beating out other suggestions of Yaz, Pedro and Pesky.

Quite clearly, the first few years of their careers don't matter. Ortiz became one of the best post season hitters of all time, but he was mediocre at best for the first part of his career. Bonds was a sure-fire HOFer before he started juicing.

Did we ever learn what the supposed list that Ortiz was on was all about?

    No.

They tested players for PEDs in 2003 to gauge the league on how rabid the problem was. This was supposed to remain confidential, and was only used to determine whether or not they needed to start implementing testing protocols and punishments. Obviously they did need to do so, and Hall of Famer Bud Selig was notably super late on addressing the issue since the home run explosion helped save the game financially. Funny how the true steroid king Bud Selig got into the hall but not guys like Bonds and Clemens. Anyway at some point it leaked that Ortiz tested positive in that confidential round of testing, but it was never revealed what he specifically tested positive for. Commissioner Manfred has since downplayed this list, saying "Back then, it was hard to distinguish between certain substances that were legal, available over the counter, and not banned under our program... Even if your name was on that (anonymous) list, it’s entirely possible that you were not a positive... I don’t think anyone understands very well what that list was... There were double digits of names, more than 10, which we knew there were legitimate scientific questions about whether or not those truly were positives." So that is generally why the confidential testing and the names leaked don't constitute hard evidence of illegal PED use. For what it's worth.

Ortiz never tested positive once the protocols were put into effect in 2004. Neither did Bonds and Clemens. Other guys, like Manny and A-Rod, got busted for PEDs under the protocols and served suspensions.

I would say Ortiz was above mediocre those early years. He also was a several time All-Star in his career.

As someone who went to multiple Twins' games while Ortiz was on the team, he was a different person in Boston.

Oh 100% but he has said repeatedly they kept telling him not to pull the ball.

Also at a time like this, let's be thankful that Ortiz survived his 2019 shooting, when he was shot through the back at close range. If that bullet struck him at a different spot or angle, he could have easily died, and that would have been extremely tragic. Thank god he survived, recovered, and is with us to celebrate this induction.

Yes. As someone who went to Doc's induction.

It really just isn't the same without them there for it. It can't be entirely celebratory.

Well the adults can't come to an agreement so delay of the start of the season at this point and maybe more. Sigh. I just want to go to Cards/Cubs game when my friends come to town in June.

How long before MLB stops drug testing players so they can bulk up and start smacking 60+ homers again in order to get the fans back to the parks again?

I’m a lifelong baseball fan and I find it hard to care if they play this year or not. There’s 0 chance I attend any games in the future thanks to the price of tickets and concessions. If the players get what they want, great. If the owners get what they want, great. Either way the prices remain prohibitively high. And two rich groups of people fighting over several billion dollars doesn’t really inspire a lot of sympathy for either side.

I almost never go to a game due to prices unless I get a good deal or get a free ticket or something. I have friends coming in one weekend and he wants to go to the Cards/Cubs game and I said twist my arm and I will go since I have not been to see a Cards/Cubs game. It would just be me and not the kids. Neither one cares that much about baseball. They would go and have fun but not a big deal to them.

Does the baseball industry realize that they’re barely ahead of hockey in so far as the big four of sports go? Could almost call it fourth out of five because 1) NFL, 2) NBA and 2B) college football.

It is in both sides best interest to stop acting like petulant children and get back to work…millionaires v billionaires and Joe/Joan Public don’t really give a shit.

Baseball is not barely ahead of hockey in the states.

Hell, soccer is arguably ahead of hockey now.

Been a while since someone had a fall from grace like Matt Harvey. From being nicknamed The Dark Knight and Happy Harvey Day tweets by the Mets to admitting he gave the Angels pitcher that OD’d some painkillers as well as admitting he also used Percocet recreationally while on the Angels. When he was on the Mets there were rumors he was, at a minimum, deal with some alcohol addiction issues.

Feels wrong to go after people for Skaggs dying. Guy chose to take the drugs on his own. He knew the risks. No one did it intentionally. Classic "tragic accident" situation.

I would much rather focus on people who are intentionally trying to harm other people.

I don’t disagree with this, from a legal standpoint. But I can also see why MLB would want to punish any employees who admit to giving other employees drugs that lead to their death.

I have no problem with that part. Losing their jobs in MLB feels like a fair punishment.

By the way they can all fuck off with adding the DH to the national league.

Don't see the point of the lottery draft thing. They have a like a million rounds of the draft and some of the best players come in later rounds. Does anyone every really tank it in baseball to get a better pick?

So yea, universal DH is in, but banned shifts and pitch clocks are still pending. What is the postseason format now?

Btw I am completely on board with banning shifts.

I want to hate the DH but I feel like it's something that will benefit the Mets as long as Alonso is there so I'm down with it.

Pitch clocks and banned shifts I'm on board with. Though part of me thinks if more players dropped down a bunt against the shift maybe it would have gone away anyways.

I have no problem with shifts. I know people hate it but I don't have a problem with it. I am okay with pitch clocks even thought part of me feels like they shouldn't be needed but I am okay with them.

But yeah fuck the DH. I will hate the DH until the day I die.

Me too. More offense please. I've always said I don't really care if the NL has the DH or not. Just so long as it's uniform across the league. Giving the AL this huge advantage for 40 years has been dumb af.

Looks like 2 teams per division get in the playoffs with the two best records getting a first round by.

Sigh. At least it isn't 14 teams.

Now. For the love of God Almighty. Resign Freddie Freeman Atlanta.

I forget where I saw it but I like the idea about a universal DH until you change the starting pitchers. Once the starting pitcher leaves the game, you lose the DH and the pitcher starts to hit.

Best of both worlds. Get the extra offense early in the game, encourage less pitching changes but also keep the late inning double switch/PH strategy.

Some thoughts on the new postseason:

-12 teams is a clean format. I always liked it in the NFL. While I have my concerns about "rest or rust" and how baseball isn't suited for a playoff bye, getting the bye is still clearly favorable to playing in the wild card round. Play simulated games if you want to stay fresh.
-The first round will (I believe) be a 3-game series with the higher seed having home field advantage (all games will be in one city). Again, I have my concerns about a shorter 3 game series and how a great team could be eliminated based on 2 bad games - especially if that team is the 2nd best team in the league and happened to be in the same division as the #1 seed - but oh well. Win your division. Get a #1 or #2 seed and you won't have to worry.
-There will be no more game 163 - we will now have tiebreakers. We'll have to reserve judgment on this until we see the tiebreaker rules. Surely this will cause controversy, but I don't hate it. I wish the entire MLB season was shorter and they could afford to reserve 2 days for potential game 163's but they cram in so much to a calendar year that something has to give. Removing game 163 makes scheduling so much easier that I can live with it.
-No more reseeding in the second round - now it's a fixed bracket format. I don't really care either way on this point, so this is fine.
-I'm very happy they didn't do a "ghost win" thing which was proposed by the players union and I guess is used in Korea. I don't like the idea of the ghost win, so I'm glad the league said no.

Overall it gets my thumbs up. Pretty solid format. We'll see how it plays out.

I feel like they have to do 3 consecutive games on three straight days. Keep the momentum and don't let the bye get too long and don't delay for TV windows. I like the idea of all the games at home for the better team. Winning two out of three on the road isn't easy

I mean I'm a traditionalist but traditionally they used to teach everyone to hit. When these kids today get marked as a future pitching prospect at age 12, that's it. They don't ever take BP again. Too risky for them they say.

The end result? The dead 9th spot. If you remember back to the 80s and 90s there used to be a decent amount of pitchers that could hit a little. Enough to maybe do SOMETHING.

These days the motherfuckers don't even know how to bunt for Christ's sake.

So fuck it. Just end the whole thing. It doesn't work anymore.

When I watch college and high school baseball there are a lot of pitchers that hit really well and do double duty and play in the field days they are not pitching. Honestly it is around the time they are drafted that it seems that is when they go one way or the other depending on what the team that draft them thinks is the best way for them to go. At that point yeah seems like they don't even practice bunting. I agree there that once they are labeled a pitcher no time for batting practice it seems. I have a friend that has two boys that live and breath baseball. Play on traveling teams and have gotten picked to play on various all american/all star type teams and of course high school varsity baseball. Both are great pitchers and hitters and play in the field the days they don't pitch. One is a senior and will be playing D1 ball next year in the Big 10 and as far as I know the school plans on using him like his teams use him now. I honestly thought he would go to a SEC school and had been at a lot of Vanderbilt camps and such over the last few years but he ended up further north.

I am sure that there are pitching prospects picked out younger ages and focus just on pitching but there is a lot of pitchers in high school and college that are excellent hitters. Some of them end up in the field and some of them end up pitching.

Honestly I don't mind a dead 9th spot if that is the way it goes because it still plays into how you play the game and do your lineup. I wish they would work with pitchers more on hitting though.

Either way I hate the DH and will never like it. I totally get the appeal of it but I feel like if you are batting you have to be in the field. If you are in the field you should be batting. Traditionalist on the way on this one.

Well the cause is pointless. The stats just keep going down for pitchers at the plate. Pitchers hitting had a "worst of all time" mark for average, OBP, slugging AND strike out percentage last season. They can't hit AT ALL anymore and it's fucking up the game.

It just is what it is. We have to stop pretending otherwise or force these dudes to take batting practice. Like at all.

I'm with Rancy here, no idea why on earth anyone would want to watch pitchers flail aimlessly at the ball..

Well the Braves traded for Matt Olson. That means Freddie Freeman is gone. Likely to LA.

Moronic. Again the Liberty Media tight wads fuck over Braves fans. Yes Olson is great. But if you have your finger on the pulse of this fan base at all, you let the whole team go before you let Freeman go. But they'll learn their lesson at the gate. That post championship bump in ticket sales and merch will slow down now. Freddie WAS the Atlanta Braves.

His last hit was a homerun. His last play was catching the final out that won the championship.

    Fuck me.

My boy is convinced this means Freeman is headed to the Yankees. I was holding out hope Steve Cohen wants to open up the checkbook for Freeman but oh well.

Jacob deGrom says he's going to opt out after 2022. Can't blame him at all for that.

It is but it's the right move for him to do. If I was him I'd do it too. He should get his money. Unless they throw a big, big number at him to stay I'm assuming he'll go somewhere that might be able to score runs when he's on the mound.

On a high scoring team he's going to have Maddux in Atlanta type numbers. 19-1, 21-2

Man, that would be something to see. As a Mets fan I know I wasn't supposed to like the 90's Braves, and most of the players I didn't, but I loved those pitching staffs. Got to see Maddux at Shea a couple times, Smoltz once I think. Maddux was something else.

He couldn't throw 90 but it didn't matter. He was going to put the ball exactly where you couldn't hit it every time.

Outsider perspective here, but signing a slugger to a big contract at age 32 is not typically a smart move unless you're the Yankees/Dodgers/Red Sox and you can afford to make shit moves. You got his best years, now let him walk.

My problem is just that Liberty Media can ABSOLUTELY afford to make those kinds of moves but they just don't. It's like getting adopted by a billionaire but then finding out it's Scrooge McDuck.

And got lots of calls because umps figured if Maddux was throwing it where he wanted, it must be a strike haha.

Braves signed Olson to an 8 year/$168MM contract with an option for a 9th year.

I guess that's not surprising since GM Alex Anthopolous is under heavy fire for letting Freeman go and making Olson a part of the team long term certainly looks better than just getting a 2 year rental instead of a long term Freeman.

I read the Blue Jay's AND the Padres have now entered the Freeman sweepstakes. My man is about to get P A I D.

Rizzo back to the Yankees so I guess they're out on Freeman.

Blue Jay's, Padres and Dodgers seem to be the main 3 going after him now. I read the rumored LA deal was huge but only for 4 years and Freeman wants 6.

Kris Bryant to Rockies on a 7 year 182 mil deal.

Always wanted him as a 3rd baseman for the Braves.

There's a possibility multiple Mets and Yankees won't be able to play in NYC this season if they're not vaccinated.

Also, I don't want to say that I'm enjoying Michael Conforto not signing with a team yet, but I'm enjoying watching it. Rumor has it he turned down multiple extension offers from the Mets and now he's receiving no calls. Him and his agent, Scott Boras, must be confused. Supposedly he wants a multiyear deal but teams are only offering "prove it" deals instead.

Makes me wonder what changed because if the reporting was right I know I've read about several teams that were interested in him before and during the lockout. Padres, Marlins, Rockies and I'm sure a couple others were mentioned. But maybe they had no idea what he was asking for.

The story is coming out. Atlanta never really even tried to bring back Freddie Freeman and Freddie insinuates that GM Alex Anthopolous was full of shit "crying" on TV about not being able to bring Freddie back. Which I completely agree with. The only thing AA is sad about is that he might get roasted over hot coals for this shit if Olson winds up a bust of any sort after giving him such a long term deal.

Edit: Buster Olney talked with Chipper Jones and made things sound a tad different. It came down to the 6th year and AA wasn't willing to go there. Freeman's camp believed Atlanta would budge and Chipper Jones warned Freddie he was "playing a dangerous game" if he wanted to stay in Atlanta. Freeman's camp wound up giving Atalnta two deals, both for more than the Dodgers gave him, and demanded one of them be the deal. An hour later the Braves called and told them no to both and that all previous offers were now rescinded.

Braves sign Kenley Jansen. That's it. We have the best bullpen I've ever seen in Atlanta now.

Jorge Soler signed with the Marlins. 3 years for 36 million. I wanted him back with Atlanta but after they spent 16 million bringing in Jansen I knew they were about to tighten the belt back up.
