In a 1 game series between Oakland and New York, I’d put my money on Oakland. They are hot, and they have an ace who can work the mound in 1 game.

They also got the greatest archer in the game, Fernando Rodney.

Felix moved to the bullpen. Maybe it is because they are a West Coast team, but I haven't followed the Mariners closely. I can't believe his numbers. Seattle fans, has it been like this for a while?

Will they be hot in a few months though? Hot now doesn't mean shit come game day if you aren't rolling then.

The Cubs meanwhile kind of frighten me sometimes. Their game the other night with the Royals being a shining example of them in a funk. It was like there was no worries from them while they were playing. Quite a few silly plays, a couple of no hustle moments and just this overall feeling of blah. I get it was somewhat of a b team day but still. There isn't a big enough of a lead to be laying back. Was also surprised how long Maddon kept Quintana in. Seeing him going out into the 7th was a bit of a surprise. Madden rarely keeps his starters in after 6 unless they are just killing it and while Quintana was pitching a good game I have seen Joe pull starts after 5 with far better games than his.

Felix hurt his shoulder last year and he hasn't been the same since. In interviews all I've heard from him suggests he thinks he can still overpower guys and just needs time to get his fastball back, but it's been long enough that I think it's safe to say his days throwing flames are over. It really sucks, because he was the only ray of light in the dank pit of Mariner fandom for a good long while, and now that he could finally contribute to a competitive team he appears to be done.

Cardinals have been crazy good of late. First they under performed and now they seem to be over performing. Lots of fun to watch.

You are just sore that they just swept the Dodgers and currently leading the wild card.

They are playing great right now. Probably too much over their head and it will even out a bit but I think they have a shot at playoffs now which I didn't think was going to happen early in the season. I was happy when the won and figured we would just keep building and get back there in the next season or so. Great fun watching this turn around right now.

I'd be sore if i was the dodgers too. Spent buckets of money to win the world series this year and are just falling further off the map.

What are people yhinking about Strasburg? Seems to have lost his mojo.

Why does Giles seem to be able to close in save situations but in any other situation is absolute trash.

Well one thing is for certain. The Brewers can't say they actually beat the Cubs this series with what they did. Jesus the Cubs call ups are fucking horrendous. I think the pitchers have walked in or hit batter for 5 or 6 runs now in two games.

Yeah the cubs have been a disaster. 3 relief pitchers in a row in 1 inning thar couldn't throw a single strike. Unreal

Definitely not staying up to watch the West Coast games and now a sick baby is taking all my attention so I didn't even see that it happened until this morning.

I tape them and if we miss them we watch them the next morning...it helps to induce a nap lol.

Hope the baby is feeling better. My wife has the same issues caring for me, kept her up all last night

The Jays are now just background tv for me if there’s nothing I want to watch. I asked Torn earlier this season if he recognizes his team. Now the Jays are entering a new era so there’s going to be a float of flux these coming years.
All 3 of my current logo jerseys have names of players no longer on the team. (Not to mention the signed jersey I have of the abuser). Since bau, Eddie and Donaldson are active players I feel wrong wearing their jerseys to games. So I guess it’s back to wearing my black Halliday for a while.
Having said that tomorrow I’m going to the game because I’m a fool like that

I always have fun at live baseball games. Hell, most of the Mets' games I've seen have been when the team isn't anywhere near playoff contention. Still, a day at the ballpark is usually a fun one. Give me a couple hot dogs, a milk shake, and a bag of peanuts and I'm happy.

David Wright is suiting up one last time for the Mets at the end of the month. They've announced he's starting at 3rd for the final time on the 29th, so it looks like I'll be shedding a few tears on that date. It always sucks when a player has to retire because his body is breaking down and not because he's ready to go out on his own terms.

David Wright was a hell of a player when healthy. Sad to see a player get their career derail because of injuries.

Wright played in the majors for 10 years, he set all time Mets records for most hitting categories and made $160 million so far (will he still get paid for the rest of his contract? if so that will put him close to $200 million). I think it's really cool to have him suit up one last time, and yes he suffered injuries but I think people are overdoing it with how sad his career is.

Its very interesting, by activating him one last time the Mets lose out on a major portion of their insurance claim on him.

Overall, yes. But he hasn't played over 40 games in a season since 2014.

Random overly complicated to prove a point stat of the day

There is only one player in AL history with the following in a single season:

    2B ≥ 40
    HR ≥ 30
    SB ≥ 20
    OPS ≥ 1.000

    2018 MVP winner Mookie Betts.

Cheers on another division title, the first time the Sox have ever won 3 straight.

Yeah, no doubt Mookie Betts should be the AL MVP.

He also led the AL in WAR and scored the second most runs.

DeGrom gonna get Cy Young despite being on an awful team? He should.

I just finished reading Keith Hernandez' autobiography. Very well written and very entertaining. He switches back and forth between present day and his youth to when he broke in with the Cardinals. It ends just after he wins the NL MVP in 1979. Great read for any baseball fan, but Mets and Cardinals fans will get the most out of it.

It really could go either way. Yelich's overall stats are better than Baez. The main thing that would tip the hat to Javy would just be his versatility in the field. He really has been a live saver for the Cubs all year with the injuries to Bryant and now this Russell thing. Especially before getting Murphy.

DeGrom obviously deserves it pitching wise but ol' Maxxy's name just won't stop being brought up but maybe since Washington no longer has a post season shot that will die off.

I am rooting for tiebreaker mania where we could have a tiebreaker game to determine the NL Central and NL West winners, then a tiebreaker to determine the 2nd NL Wild card spot (Cards vs whoever loses the NL West tiebreaker), THEN the two wild card games.

Yankees basically saying they will go with a heavy dose of their bullpen in the wildcard game considering Happ and Severino are going in the Red Sox series.

I haven't read anything about their plans but I would guess Severino will be scrapped for the season finale if the Yankees wrap up home field in the WC game by then.

Even if that doesn't happen, Happ will be on normal rest for the Wild Card game which isn't until Oct 3.

I am not the one saying that. It was reported by Marc Carig from the NY Athletic and endorsed by Ken Rosenthal. They can always use Tanaka but according to reports, the team is going to be aggressive with their bullpen usage.

those guys sound like idiots then

“I don’t think we can do something like we did the other day when we started a reliever [Jonathan Holder],’’ Boone said. “I see one of our three starters [J.A. Happ, Masahiro Tanaka and Luis Severino] starting that game. You could see a situation where one of our starters is pitching real well and comes out a little early because we’d be lined up and rested with our guys ready to go. We could be a little aggressive in certain situations. But it wouldn’t be an opening-type situation.’’

since it's a do-or-die game, if the starter on either team struggles they will be pulled early, but the yankees will be starting a starter.

The Athletic is a online subscription website that has hired a lot of big name sports reporters. It's actually pretty great.

Brewers and Cubbies going down to the wire. Love a good division race. I’m pretty confident that Yelich has locked up the MVP. He’s having a monster stretch right now. @MTR, I’m pulling for your Cards like a lifelong fan right now!

I hate that we missed out but honestly who thought we had a chance after such a horrible start to the season. They really came alive after the all-star break and made a run for it in a strong division so sucks to be out but not disappointed that much. The manager change maybe should have happened sooner though. No way I cheer either of those teams on in the post season though.

Love that there are two tie-breakers tomorrow.

Mauer came out and caught 1 pitch in the top of the 9th and then they pulled him. His career is over.

Great scene at CitiField on Saturday night as Wright retired. They let his 2 year old daughter throw out the first pitch. He batted twice, came out in the top of the 4th and was pulled. They even let Reyes get the start next to him at short so the band got back together one last time. Standing ovation and fireworks and the whole nine yards. It was pretty cool to see a guy who grew up a Mets fan play his entire career as a member of the blue and orange. Hard to see a guy a few months younger than me have to retire because his body can't handle it any longer. I didn't cry though. There must have been a lot of dust in my house Saturday night though because my eyes kept tearing up.

I'm hoping coaching is in his future. He mentioned that he really enjoyed mentoring the young kids at A and AA ball this past summer, showing them the ins and outs of the pro game. I could see him ending up a hitting coach when he's ready to return to the game.

I went to the game yesterday. I hope that was his final game, because it was a beautiful day. It would feel weird if he came back. Not a dry eye in the stadium when he came out to catch one pitch.

I still think if they take Prior over Mauer they play in the World Series in 02 or 03. . .

'02 he was mediocre as a rookie for the Cubs. Maybe '03, but you need to remember the Twins' way of coaching pitchers...

In 02 it sure would have been nice starting a "mediocre" Mark Prior and his 1.16 whip with 11.9 Ks per 9 in game 2 of the ALCS (a series in which they lead 1-0) over Rick Reed and his 1.36 whip and 4.5 Ks per 9. If they go up 2-0 on the Angels who knows...

True, but again, I wouldn't trust the Twins "pitch to contact" approach to have Prior get 11.6 K/9.

Santana was doing just fine striking out 11.4 in 2002. The pitch to contact narrative is because they have never had top line pitching who could strike people out.

Congrats are definitely in order for the Brew Crew. They showed they didn't need Yelich to win and can do it with a whole roster of people. Brewers are a strong team

See you again in a few days. Feel like doing an avatar bet when we meet again hitty?

Really wish Hendricks or Hamels was available over Lester mainly because both Kyle and Cole have proven they can get deep into the game consistently. A Hendricks 8+ inning gem would save the day for the bullpen. Hopefully Lester can get past 6 innings tomorrow. I guess they can always use Montgomery for some of the later innings if needed.

when in doubt, bet on the tilted hat.

Definitely down for an avatar bet bud.

Paul Molitor fired by the Twins. He shouldn't be blamed for this year with the lack of support from Buxton/Sano and the injuries/suspensions. The regime probably wants their own guy, not someone they inherited.

He was reluctant to move towards their analytics approach. Would have been gone last year but they made the playoffs so they gave him another year.

Agreed. It would also be weird to fire someone after they win Manager of the Year. Sounds like he will move to a position in the Baseball Ops department.

So add Molitor, Showalter, and Scioscia to the list of very good managers looking for work. I'd expect Farrell and Girardi to get hired somewhere this fall/winter.

Moiltor isn't looking for work. Going to continue to work for the Twins. . . he is also not a "very good" manager.

Is Girardi looking for work? Last I remember hearing he was looking forward to spending time with his kids when they get home from college in the summer or something like that.

Based on your hostile reaction I am guessing you were one of the fans cheering for Hader and Braun. You should definitely feel a little bit ashamed, but not overly ashamed.

Man I love playoff baseball. It helps that fall is a great season but there’s just something about baseball playoffs that is perfect. Guess I’m rooting for whoever wins the Cubs/Rockies game in the NL and the Indians/A’s in the AL.

Now, what is dumb is the reaction of the Milwaukee fans. Standing ovations for Hader and Braun? I guess when you live in Wisconsin though and you are so used to losing you have to try to find something to cheer.

Yep, that’s gotta be it. You must have figured it all out.
I wonder, do you say that about the yourself though? Standing ovations for Clemens and Manny. Pathetic.

I didn't really get to see much of the game tonight due to work. What I did see just showed the Cubs just didn't have the stamina to make it. They had a hell of a last month with a ridiculous stretch of I think 23 or 24 straight games, making up rain outs, zipping across the US and losing several key people. In the end you have one of the most insane offensive line ups ever assembled but they can't muster more than 1 run a game. That has got to be fixed.

Exciting game. Glad the Rockies had to stretch their bullpen a bit. I'd like the Brewers/Rockies series to go 5, eighteen inning games.
