Always one of the best franchises in baseball, I really like that they will not put up with 2 years of missing the playoffs, and I like Matheny a lot too.

I am kind of hoping they give Oquendo a chance to coach.

Just think, they gave Francona a courtesy interview when they hired Matheny.

Don't you think this would have been his shot to finish out the rest of the season? If I am not mistaken the interim manager has never played ball. Not that it matters per say just interesting they would go with him over a an STL lifer. Plus Oquendo has played all 9 positions. He knows a thing or two

Yeah not sure why not let him be the interim. They have to know he will be interested in the job. He interviewed for it when Matheny got the job.

Oquendo came up with the Mets.

that should qualify him to suck.

MLB players shouldn't be bringing their juiced dad's on to the field. Everyone knows what it looks like now.

The other thing is the guy is an iron worker so maybe he is actually just yoked but I don't think so. That looks highly unnatural.

Yeah, his stats aren't really in line with getting a bigger deal than Trout.

    In his seventh season
He only has one season of over 30 homeruns (and only one under 20)
Has never knocked in 100 RBI's (got 99 once)
Only two seasons batting over .300
On a perennial world series contender

He looks the part of a superstar, but not the stats.

    In comparison to Trout

    In his either season
4 seasons of 30+ homers (only his short '11 season was under 20
Only two seasons of 100 RBI's
    5 seasons over .300
    One playoff apperance

Trout would unarguably get the biggest contract baseball has ever seen if he hit the open market this off season. There's no reason to make that comparison. No one thinks Bryce Harper is a better baseball player than Mike Trout.

25 year olds who were NL MVP at age 22 don't come onto the free agency market very often. Most of the time ridiculous contracts are handed out to overpay ageing vets. So teams will fall over themselves to secure Bryce's prime years.

    But he’s overrated.....
I honestly don’t see how anyone can think he’s overrated. He’s had a damn good career up to this point, and he’s only 25. Just hit his prime.

That's a fair point. I think he'll end up having a great career.

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...market-himself

I had the All Star game on in the background last night. Mike Trout says that he's doing "all he can" to help market himself, which is very little. Baseball needs him to step up. I get that he is the best player in the game by putting his head down and focusing on the game, but I wish he would do something to help market himself. Every sport needs a top guy to promote the league.

If the Market for an all-star player like Manny Machado was in such high demand, how come the Orioles couldn’t pull in a deal that included Alex Verdugo? He is a superior prospect (top 30 in baseball) and much more of a value add.

Because regardless of how talented he is, it's still just a rental for a few months.

You’d think once he is in LA they would have enough trust in the organization to sign him to a long-term deal. They have the 2019 cap space. I’d be interested to see what the Phillies and Brewers (to some extent) offered Baltimore for Machado.

Do the dodgers need him past this year? Seager wil, be back next season, and Turner is still a solid third basemen.

Dodgers front office must have pics of the entire Orioles front office to get the fucking deal they got.

Dodgers still need some pitching but damn they are gonna be insane in the 2nd half.

Future contract is irrelevant though. Whatever you give up now is basically just for a few months of a player. It's almost always a poor decision to give up a legit top prospect with years of cheap service time left for a rental, the offers are never going to be overly impressive.

You have the ability to negotiate a new deal now but likely his agent advises to wait it out regardless to maximise what he ends up getting from competing teams. So you're still competing with every other team, and when that point comes LA could have signed him anyway giving up nothing.

Sure there is value in him being introduced to the organisation, living in the area, getting to know the staff and team mates, and also being able to negotiate. There's also obvious value in those few months in a world series run. Them giving up a bunch of guys shows that. But it's not top prospect value.

It's probably an overpay, not even close to a massive steal. It's 5 prospects for 3 months of a player. Dodgers can afford it and there is a real premium on those extra few wins a rental will give you and adding a player for the playoff run so it's understandable but it's not insane.

Machado can play 3rd; keep Corey at SS.

Turner is not a long-term solution.

An infield of Bellinger, Machado, Seager and Muncy could be something special in 2019.

Muncy is not good at second and shouldn't be there long term. Even now in the short term they should get him on 1st whilst Bellinger is in the outfield. Manny is also terrible defensively at short, and should play 3B going forward as you said but given they played Muncy at second I'm not sure how much the Dodgers care given the offense produced.

Surprisingly, third base has been Muncy’s most productive position this year from a defensive standpoint.

If the Dodgers can get 1 more quality SP then they should be able to get to the big show again. The real issue for the Dodgers is the AL is stacked AF. With the dominance of the Red Sox, the true emergence of the Yankees, Cleveland looking ace and the Astros still looking like WS champs, the Dodgers are still a long shot.

Indians acquire Brad Hand and Adam Cimber from the Padres. They already had a lock on the Central, but this gives them a scary bullpen. They've had a few issues so far this year, but I wouldn't want to run into them in October.

The Cubs would most likely have to cut ties with Happ, Montgomery, 1 of 5 top pitching prospects, and possibly even Russell to land a once in a lifetime talent like deGrom who is not only having a Cy Young season, but an NL MVP season.

It got started somewhere. I think it was just a do the cubs have enough to trade and then it whirlwinded from there.

Cubs dont need the pitching per say if Yu and Chatwood would perform up to par. With Morrow hurting himself every other day bending over and going on the dl we need another viable closer. There are a few guys in the bullpen now that have the tools to do it but not the maturity to settle down just yet.

The Phillies and/or Braves would benefit the most from acquiring deGrom.

I don't think the Mets trade him unless they get an offer they can't refuse. Not sure if teams are going to overpay to get him. Obviously this isn't a Machado situation where the Mets will get nothing if they don't trade deGrom since he's under team control for 3 more seasons so they're not in a hurry.

I think deGrom and Syndergaard stay, Familia is gone, Cabrera is gone, and possibly Matz or Wheeler goes.

The Brewers would benefit the most out of the 3 I would say. They really have no “ace” at this point.

One of my friends is a giant cardinals fan (jerk) and he made an offhand comment the other day carpenter is on the juice. I gave him shit all day for it today. Hell of a game for him.

The Red Sox are on pace for 112 wins. Very fun team to watch but my confidence level is still so-so after going 1-6 the last two years in the playoffs. With Price and Porcello both fielding 5+ ERA's in the playoffs for their careers, they still need to prove it.

Well a 5+ ERA wouldn't be that far off their current regular season performance to be fair

Yeah, it's a wierd feeling to know your team is going to finish with the best record in baseball, but you're sitting here waiting to see if the current crop can not look like amateurs in the playoffs.

We're still no lock for the division given that the second best team in baseball (by record) is in our division. 5 game lead with 60 to play can disappear quickly.

It's good to learn your history...

40 years ago, the .Red Sox blew a similar lead to lose to the Yankees in a One game playoff to determine the division winner.

70 years ago, the Yankees came from behind to take the last two games of the year and beat the Red Sox by one game for the AL Pennant on the last day of the season.

History has a way of repeating itself.......

I don’t think it’s as terrible a trade as some people are making it out to be. The A’s are taking on his entire salary. Wahl will probably be called up this season to the bullpen and Toffey sounds like he could develop into a decent hitter. Most important part of the trade was the $1MM in international bonus money, giving them roughly $5 MM to spend.

The perfect encapsulation of the Twin's season. Go 9-2 before the all star break, then get swept by the Royals (which includes an inside the park home run from DREW BUTERA!)

These rainout rules are bullshit. The Red Sox are up 5-0 but due to the rain all the runs/stats are wiped out and they start fresh at a later date? Why not just pick up the game where it left off?

I think that's only if it's reached the 5th inning. If it hasn't yet reached the 5th it's a wash and has to be made up.

Mets, during the game last Saturday: "What? No, Cespedes doesn't need double heel surgery that will keep him out of action for 10 months."

Mets, two days ago: "Yeah, he needs the surgery."

Oh, and Noah Syndergaard caught hand, foot, and mouth disease, because of course he did.

I have no problem if the games are restarted and played in full. The rosters will be different and so will the avalibility of the bull pen.

However that game should have never started. Thats the bigger issue.

Juan Soto is having quite the season. He is the first teenager since Jimmy Sheckard of the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in 1898 to homer in 3 straight games. His OPS sits at 1.004 through 58 games played.

They need to change the luxury tax rules so that teams don't get a reset on the penalty tier for temporarily dropping below the threshold. Team history should be taken into account so that teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers aren't allowed to work the system. It was absolute bullshit that the Dodgers were allowed to get a reset because the Braves helped relieve them of salary burdens. Absolute bullshit.

The stupid thing about that story is that the attire the announcer was chastising Utley was for charity.

Utley is known as an old school type gamer.
Questioning his professionalism is not going to sit well with him. Chase is a very cool dude IRL. This announcer is a moron.

And so the Jays have managed to work themselves out of the PR disaster of what to do with Osuna. Maybe Giles can remember he wasn't a bad closer last year.

Hey only 4 blown saves compared to the 10 from Osuna last year. Of course that requires me ignoring how Osuna became lights out again towards the end of the season and beginning this year. Also how blown save and saves are garbage stats. But I need to justify the baseball side of things as well.

No worries Pabs. The Osuna/Giles swap is interesting. Toronto got out of a PR disaster, and Houston got another bullpen piece.

Does anyone legit think Harper gets dealt today? I think it's slim, and it'll be a team like the A's if he is traded.

I dont think he will be dealt. Personally its got to be a contending team and i would say quite a few are out of the mix. Cubs definitely wont as they are stacked and the of is just overflowing the way it is.

Blue Jays get rid of a woman beater and inherit a self beater in the process

Verlander is pissed though. Will be interesting how this plays out.

A lot of action happening in the last hour. Sad to see Dozier go, but the Dodgers are getting a good second basement. Logan Forsythe will replace him. Dozier will heat up as he always does in the second half.

Does it feel like you’re supporting the same team?

The Jays feel different to me and we haven’t changed anywhere as much as you guys compared to two years ago.

I'm used to it by now Pabs. It's yes and no. It's a different era but I've been conditioned supporting Brentford too to lose and replace players constantly over many years. If anything there is more continuinity with the Rays as players like Snell have been with the organisation for a long time

Love the return on the Archer trade. I was surprised. Shame Ramos had to go but there's just no point letting his contract run down.

I’m confused, we’re the Rays buyers or sellers today?

Outfield of Pham/KK/Meadows? Bauers and Adames to keep developing? Snell and Honeywell (and Glasnow) pitching? Stacked farm? Things aren't looking too bad over here.

I read an article where the Pham trade had more to do with their 40 man roster makeup than anything else. The guys they sent to the Cardinals were going to be people they took off the 40 man, so it was a win/win on their part.

Mets Twitter was on point last night during the worst game in their 57 year history.

Absolutely dreadful stuff. Jesus Christ. And we're only a couple of games ahead of Oakland.

The Yankees can forget about the division and start focusing on who is going to start for them in a potential one game playoff against Seattle or Oakland.

the teams you just mentioned are also why the Yanks need to secure the top wild card spot. I mean getting home field in a make-or-break game is advantageous regardless, but they especially want to avoid flying out to seattle or oakland for a WC game, then back to Boston for the divisional round. that's not ideal travel-wise.

Is the rule still that you don't play a team from your division for the divisional round or did they do away with that?

And a guy like Aaron Judge batting in a ballpark like Oakland is a lot different than him batting in Yankee stadium with that short right field
