Yessir! Marvel, says hold my drink and let me take the wheel.

Desn't feel crammed or like too much is going on... we understand the story/plot... and the cast is great.

    Looks awesome.

    I fucking love Michael Keaton.

This looks like a lot of fun, by the way. Holland won me over in Civil War.

Keaton's line "Don't mess with me because I will kill you and everybody you love."

    Perfect.

It's like Sony didn't know how to write villains and they had Electro do a whole speech that made no sense, and Keaton just says one line that sums everything up.

Wow. Just wow. Vulture looks amazing and I like that Spidey has a reason to go after him without just leaving it to the Avengers. Looks like no origin story, which is nice, and the plot looks to be very straight-forward and simple. I'm all in.

Keaton will always bring the goods. I do think the Vulture wings look a little too Green Goblin. The mask is great though.

I have a really basic question. and I realize this isn't the right thread but this is the active comic book thread at the moment so I'll throw it in here.

so I just watched Bats vs Supes. how do people not know Superman is Clark Kent when he doesn't wear a disguise? is that just a willful suspension of disbelief by the audience or do they ever explain it? and I know this applies not only to that one movie but the Superman canon in general.

In the older films, they at least made an effort to make Clark the geeky, awkward and shy type. So I guess everyone is clueless cause he's the last person you would suspect to be Superman. In the new films, I didn't notice any difference between Superman and Clark's personalities. In short, I don't know.

Caviel walked around Time Square with the glasses and no one recongized him. Of course, its Caviel. In the Byrne run they explained Clark could move his spine up to make him a few inches shorter than Superman.

I always thought the Clark Kent/Superman segment of Kill Bill was a great explanation.

    This covers it pretty well:

As for this flick, I am interested. Spidey was one of the best things in Civil War and felt like a pretty refreshing version of the character after the shitty last few films. I'm interested, it doesn't look like anything overly special but it looks like it should be fun.

That still seems like a pretty poor explanation (posture/clothing/glasses/voice change). If he's just flying through the air and fighting bad guys I can accept that no one gets a good look at his face, but in the new movies it seems like he hangs around with people a lot (like when he attended that congress hearing). Anyway I'm not trying to say OMG WHAT A STUPID PLOT HOLE, it's fine, I was just curious if there was a more significant explanation I may have missed.

God, that's such a shit Youtube video. Can't anyone do a video 'explaining comics' without the requisite snark, ennui, self-loathing and ironic sarcasm you'd expect of Simpson's Comic Book Guy?

I've had friends not recognize me when they've seen me without glasses... it all depends on the circumstance, the closeness and the level of scrutiny when looking at someone. My buddy was looking at pictures of us dressed up at a party last Halloween, and when it came to me in a pic without glasses, he asked who it was (I had a wig on, but it was more a toupee than anythig else). It's really not as far-fetched as some would like to make it. As readers, we 'know' things and what to look for that an in-universe character isn't necessarily looking for.

whenever I shave my goat off, people don't recognize me for a sec. I still have a bit of a babyface underneath it. Also, If I shave my goat, put on a short hair wig and pit on a suit or an outfit I wouldn't normally wear, people don't recognize me until I start talking.

That shot of Spidey and Iron Man swooping is brilliant - hope its not just from the traditional swinging montage at the end of the film and Tony sees a bit of action in the film. I like the Vulture's look and the robbery scene looks like the perfect continuation of the tone they had in Civil War.

I like that it will take place before and after Civil War.

And another I like about this Peter Parker is that he's what he is in the comics, a kid that's in the background. Nobody outside his friend seem to notice or care about him, which I thought it one of the many things the Sony movies got wrong. Peter's not some hoodie-wearing, skateboard-riding rebel that walks in slowmo down the middle of the hall with his head down for everybody to stare at. He's just an average twerp.

Michael Keaton very well may gone as being the guy who not only played a great super hero, but a great super villain. He's easily one of my favorite actors of all time and I just have a feeling we're going to walk away from this movie being higher on Keaton's work than anything else. Kind of like how I really loved James Spader as Ultron, that made the movie even better. It's rare though IMHO to walk out of a Marvel movie and the villain is the most entertaining thing. DC it's way more common to have the bad guys be the most interesting, but Marvel does a great job of really making it more about the hero than the villains.

The fact that Peter is a dorky kid in this film gives me hope that the villain can really stand out. I think it's quite a coup for Marvel to get Keaton, so I'm confident that he won't be wasted.

Looks good to me. Not quite GotG2, but still, I'm more ready for a Spider-Man movie than I've been since SM3. As trailers go that wasn't anything particularly special. Looking forward to seeing this.

I'll be honest, I wish I hadn't seen this trailer.

I'll be very surprised if the main movie doesn't follow the obvious story beats they're showing us in the trailer. You can pretty much see how the film goes from start to finish from the scenes in it.

I'm hyped, but I kinda feel I lost some of the surprise of the plot structure.

(this is on me, I know but I'm trying to pre-warn others).

The trailer kinda gives the impression that the Vulture is the villain because he's trying to punish corporatists. Probably not a time to make that a villains motive.

Tony being a dick to everyone who cares about him is still going on. I think Keaton is going to be the first real life scary villain in the cinematic universe. Purple Man and Kingpin maybe their best overall Marvel villains.

Well, Killgrave and Kingpin are already part of the MCU, after a fashion. I'm still waiting for a Netflix cameo in one of the films so I can mark out like an ubergeek.

I do wonder how much Vulture has to do with Stark. He mentions him not caring about people and Tony really doesn't wan't Peter to deal with him. It could be Tony being super overprotective about Peter after what happens in Civil War. Another idea is Vulture is another pissed of Stark employee that has a legit gripe with Tony and the more Peter digs the less good it is for Tony.

I hope Vulture loses the helmet somewhere during the movie. This is too much like an Iron Man villain, too professional. I like my Vulture to be the angry grandpa with wings.

I liked the trailer but it didn't blow me away. I think the problem is that Spider-Man has been done to death in the cinema - it seems like the same type of story beats that we've seen in the previous films. A big bad shows up just as he's managing some personal or relationship problems and he defeats him after a couple of skirmishes, all featuring some ropey CGI.

He was great in Civil War, and I predict he will be again in Infinity War, because he had the other characters to bounce off and the sheer scale of the action let him do some cool things. That's why I hope Tony is sprinkled throughout the film. Tying it into the established MCU is the best way of making it stand out from the previous instalments. Hopefully Peter wanting to be an Avenger and having to earn the suit is enough of a twist on the conventional formula.

The sad thing is I heard Jeph Loeb say that he didn't feel the Netflix Marvel shows would cross over well in the MCU which I think it's hilarious especially when technically the MCU has crossed over to those shows with multiple references to the Avengers storyline. I mean, if ANYTHING, we need to see Luke Cage and Jessica Jones crossing over with Ant Man. That's huge but maybe they don't feel it's necessary. Idk. Maybe they feel the Netflix shows are just so gritty in comparison that they might not work but it's not like you have to make these characters a large part of the movies. I can't really understand the hesitation other than character overload because again, I get that the Netflix shows are not as comical and kid friendly but you can make these characters work together like in the comics. I have a lot of comics that feature Deadpool and it's not like they're these ultra Mature books.

Seeing it tomorrow. The reviews sound positive - all the stuff with Peter at school in particular is said to be handled really well.

I thought it was pretty good. Keaton is a great villain. A bunch of Easter eggs all over the place. The movie is about 10 to 15 minutes too long and there is a bit of a WTF reveal near the end. There is one Batman thing I saw, but that could be me matrixing.

This was great fun. On first impression, I'd say it's the best Spiderman movie. They got the tone spot on and Peter himself was funny - unlike the Raimi films where minor characters would raise a laugh while Peter was constantly gloomy and down-on-his-luck. The action was nicely handled for the most part and for the first time I feel they showed his limits properly - like the time taken to scale a huge monument, not having buildings to swing from or landing on things that aren't as solid as they look.

I thought it was really clever how they used the events of the first Avengers film and Civil War as origin stories for Spidey and the villains. Learning all the tricks of the suit was a great twist on the usual "Hero learns how to use his powers" stuff that we've seen twice before with this character. Keaton played the low-key villain very well, especially in the final act. This might have one of the most satisfactory endings in an MCU film, simply in terms of all of the stuff they set up (see spoilers below). I went in to this with very low expectations, despite loving his appearance in Civil War. But I was pleasantly surprised by how they actively steered away from the formula used in Raimi and Webb's films and kept the balance between a coming-of-age film and a film tied in with the overall MCU. Both this and Wonder Woman ended up being way more charming than I anticipated.

Great addition to the MCU! The official last scene got a great chuckle from the audience. The last post credits scene was a great little wink and fu at the same time to the fans of the post credit scenes. Specially after all the post credits scenes in GOTG v2. I guess since it's a Sony film, they didn't want to go overboard. Loved the movie overall. And yeah, the kitchen scene and the car ride, terrific and horrific.

When Snyder cast Ben and was talking about having an older Batman, I found myself wishing they had cast Keaton. Then never try to explain the continuity.

I'd mark the fuck out for an animated movie set in the Batman 1989 universe.

They have most of the original cast from Batman '89 to do DKR, they just need to cast a Superman and female Robin. Its a shame Christopher Reeves is gone, I would have killed just to see Kingdome Come.

I like so much of Superman Returns that it makes it all the more depressing how it failed.

Routh as Supes, Frank Underwood as Lex, most of Singer's actual direction and continuing on from Superman II and not just starting over were all great things. The shame was that the script was a remake of Donner's Superman (Lex, a land deal that would put millions under water, etc) that was just close enough to draw attention to how much better the original was. I actually liked a lot of the deleted stuff (somewhere around 45 minutes) better than what made the final cut.

There was also too much downtime. Should have started with the cut Krypton stuff, done the credits and then cut to Lex in the Fortress of Solitude and then Supes reappearing to save the plane in very short order. Too much time before the first big sequence.

Superman Returns' Lois Lane was the worst. I was also not a fan of superboy. They could have had Superman come back and fight any other villain instead of Lex. Lex could have been in it, but he needed to fight something like a Bizzaro, Brianiac or Metallo. The fact we have not gotten any of those villains on the big screen is a crime.

I'm surprised that as many people on this forum loved the movie did, as this place tears apart everything not faithful to the original source. I guess this is a sign of how bad movies treat comics that everyone goes into it knowing it'll be jacked up, and they grade on a curve. It was the worst Spider-Man yet, and that's including Spider-Man 3 that we've all collectively tried to block out of our memories. They spent 3/4s of the movie focusing on the suit and all the video crap it could do. At one point they unlock more powers, just like a game. Why Spider-Man would need an AI is something I just don't get. Nor do I get why they needed 500 and some odd number of web types. It just fell flat for me.

Spider Armor MK I-IV, Iron Spider, Stealth Suit, Fear Itself, etc...

The suit is remarkably similar to Spider Armor MK IV, only instead of Parker making it, Starker made it, like The Iron Spider Suit...

Of the many wastes in the movie, the unused intro with him by the Krypton wreckage could easily have been used as a way to show some unknown alien (Brainiac, Darkseid) tracking his crystal ship back to Earth. Even if not for that movie, it could have set up the next movie in the open the same way Superman I did.

Bosworth was a terrible choice for Lois. Oddly, I've always felt that Parker Posey could have made a good Lois.

I'm not overly fussed that he didn't create it himself... I'm not against the fact that Stark made him one... it's that it was a flexible Iron Man suit with web blasts instead of repulsive blasts.

It took me a while to get used to the way they portrayed the suit, especially having Karen talk to him the way Jarvis and Friday talk to Stark. But most of it was played for laughs and it fits with Stark's awkward way of trying to be a father figure that Peter would get a ridiculously over-customised suit which he could never truly get to grips with. I doubt we'll see such a heavy focus on it next time. Having an AI gets around the sheer amount of inner monologue that Spider-man tends to have - it lets him wonder aloud and bounce around ideas without looking crazy. It just doesn't come across as original because the likes of Iron Man, Ant-Man and various superhero shows have established a hero who talks to someone in his ear.

I can understand someone preferring Spider-man 2 to Homecoming, but I think it's easily better than Spiderman 3 and the two Mark Webb films.

To me, Spider-man 2 is better, because its one of the best love stories I have witnessed. It was the perfect story of people trying to get their shit together in their 20s and realizing they need to trust one another. Spider-man 3 totally wrecks that though thus its a shit film. Spider-man: Homecoming is good, but its another Marvel origin story minus the first act. After Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, I feel like I get what they are doing. I did like possibly borderline love what they did in Homecoming, but its nothing really new. Spider-man 2 to me was completely new from anything I have seen. All the love stories in the super-hero films are just added even Tony/Pepper. Spider-man 2's main strength is the love story with Peter coming to terms on why he needs to be Spider-man for himself and not for the ghost of Uncle Ben.

I wonder if the other elemental villains are even real. Or if they're just Mysterio constructs...

This was my immediate thought as well, although i did also think it might be a bit similar to the vulture reveal.

The trailers haven't gotten me too hyped but the word of mouth/early reviews on this are very positive. I think I'll have to see this in the cinema. Post credit scene is supposed to be good and I've read that it does a good job explaining post-Endgame society and the effects of all that stuff.

The dialogue and Jake Gyllenhall's acting is horrendous here. Good god.

After watching FFH, I see why Beck's character is so blah here.

    Ok, that's brilliant.

It's the second best Spiderman 2, but the third best Spiderman ever. Honestly, it's really really good. The post credit scenes are game changers.

I found this average. It relies mostly on the charm of its quite talented cast, and when it does so, it works - even if the majority of the one liners have become predictable at this point, by Marvel standards.

Personally speaking, it'll be hard to top the Sam Raimi entries, as they encapsulated the essence of Spider-Man down to its core: in those films the hero is stripped down of all the high-tech histrionics that populate every film these days, New York itself is a character of its own, and the dilemmas of what it means to be a national symbol of heroism encompasses are larger in depth. Of course it'd be redundant to build every subsequent adaptation going by that mold, but as mere spectator, I'd be lying if I said it doesn't bother me to see a "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" so dislocated from its roots. I understand Spider-Man has to be integrated in the bigger scheme of the Marvel Universe and therefore can't exist in a bubble of its own, but I miss the efficiency of a gadgetless Peter Parker, his relationship with Harry Osborn, his romance with MJ Watson, and his adventures in NYC with the city behaving like a living organism in and of itself. Albeit I wish the film focused more on the abuse a villain of that caliber could cause on Peter, I think Mysterio is the most fascinating Spidey villain since Raimi's Dr. Octopus (but not as mesmerizing). Again: I wish Fury and co weren't present in this film so the filmmakers could give Mysterio more room to breathe as both a character and an antagonist but oh well. I'm starting to intolerate his presence.

It would be cool if the third film has no time jump whatsoever, just picks up from that post-credit scene and runs from there.

All the good parts are visually very pretty and my garbage prose attempting to describe it would do it no justice.

Reading about this movie elsewhere online, fucking hell Spiderman fans are nearly as bad as Star Wars fans.

Not satisfied because it didn't match up with the story they'd written in their minds. Fucking spare me.

Kraven rumored to be in the next one. Which makes total sense now. I expect a more grounded story for the next one and hopefully a team up film maybe Daredevil?

I would take any excuse to get the Netflix Matt Murdoch on the big screen.

I heard a rumor of them possibly integrating the symbiote and Venom into the Spiderman franchise. Any truth to that?

None that I have heard, but could the Asgardians of the Galaxy run into it first?
