Just bought Stardew Valley. Any advice? This thing looks big as I'm just wandering around talking to people.
There are wiki's online that have every bit of information on everything in the game and if you utilize this you can maximize your efficiency/profit, but since it's a game with no ending and no real deadlines there's no downside to figuring it out at your own pace by letting the game teach you things. So that's a decision for you to make - how much you want to google things about the game. I have relied pretty heavily on wiki's for info and don't regret it but many commenters I've seen online have said their advice to new players is to ignore the online guides because it's more fun to figure it out on your own. For some people that's probably the most fun way to play the game, and you can even keep your own notebooks with useful info (things like which crops sell for what amount, when stores are closed, which villagers prefer which gifts, etc).Originally Posted by Jarrod1983

Watering can be a chore at first but eventually you can upgrade your watering can to make it easier and also craft sprinklers so you don't have to do manual watering at all. I remember getting into that and then figuring out it basically ended after three years (I think). Knowing I can do whatever is great. I was just mining ore and going down levels in the mine for a bit. Seems like a game that hours just slip by you if you're not careful.
yea do whatever you want tbh. there's an assessment after year 2 but it doesn't change anything, you keep playing afterwards and can re-initiate the assessment later if you didn't do well enough.
just don't join JojaMart (you probably already figured this out from the cutscenes). well you can join but... there's two ways to go. you can either build back up the community center and unlock things that way (to do so you have to deliver various bundles of items to the community center). or you can join JojaMart which kills the community center and then you unlock things by paying pure cash. once you join Jojamart you can't go back, I don't think.

Labo is on sale for like $20 at Target. Stopped in this morning and grabbed the vehicle set.
2 new versions of the Switch console are reportedly in development to be unveiled at E3 in June. One would be a cheaper model that probably won't have detachable joycons and might not come with a dock. There are little details on the other new version, the one that is said to be higher end and more expensive. Available as early as this summer (maybe, not confirmed).
The high end version I suppose is somewhat concerning for current Switch owners (especially recent ones like myself who got on board in Holiday Season 2018) but I trust Nintendo won't make games exclusive to the higher end version.
If I'm guessing, and looking at the specs of the newer models of the same CPU chips, I reckon they'll make a device that's probably the exact same physical size but maybe a larger screen (with smaller bezels), that runs at 1080p with docked speeds whilst in handheld mode. The new CPU wouldn't have to be any more powerful, just more energy efficient, which is very doable. And also the size would need to be the same in order to attach our existing joycons.
Regarding exclusive games for the newer model, they did make a "New" 3DS which had exclusives (even if there were only like 3-4), so I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to do it. But I dont think it matters to us because devs wont ever support the idea (as we saw with the 3DS), since they'd be looking to push their games out to as many people as possible. Making a game that only a segment of Switch users can access, doesn't really make sense.
I'm interested to know what happens to the current model of the Nintendo Switch. Do they discontinue it? You look at Sony and Microsoft, they both started with the PS4 and Xbox One respectively, then they eventually discontinued both original models in favour of a new streamlined one (PS4 Slim/Xbox One S), and a new big boy model (PS4 Pro/Xbox One X).
Nintendo could be looking to do the same here, and phase out the current Switch (which also has piracy related security flaws they'd love to see the last of).

I guess full 1080i is something it could be right? Expanded battery life would be fucking sweet. A fully portable version with no docking capabilities makes sense for a cheaper price. But just how much cheaper could they make it? If it isn't much then it hardly seems worth it.
if it's dockless they could conceivably drop the price by $50 and that'd make sense. but in reality the reason it would make sense is if they phase out the original model and make these two new models. if the higher end model goes up in price, and the lite model drops by $25, but there's no mid-tier option, then it's worth it to them to do, cause the cost to manufacture the lite version decreases no matter what the price reduction from the original model ends up being.
Assuming we get that lite handheld without detachable joycons that everyone's expecting, it makes you wonder how it'll handle the games that dont work in portable mode, like Mario Party.

Maybe it can't handle it, and could be a potential feature for the new upcoming model. We kinda take it for granted with proper consoles like PS4 and Xbox One, when we're talking about real powerhouse consoles. The Switch at the end of the day is still just a handheld.
In the NES thing it doesn't seem to let you start some of the games from the beginning. For example, Dr Mario starts paused, you unpause it and the pills are already dropping pretty fast as if you've loaded up someone else's save. Also in the original Zelda you begin with plenty of hearts, rupees and bombs, which doesn't seem right although I might be wrong. Is it supposed to be like this or is it just me?
So a lot of those games have two versions. If it has the red "SP" ribbon in the top right corner of the cover art, it's basically a special version of the game that's ready to roll and throws you in the deep end. I assume for people who want a special challenge or have played the games hundreds of times.
You just have to find the versions further below without the red ribbon.

I had the first one when my GCN crapped out and couldn't play anything that ran at a high frame rate. I was about 3/4 in and then when I got my cube fixed I had a backlog of games to play and I never finished it. Then I lost my damn copy of it. Never played the sequels either.

I am not a Zelda guy. I plan to give BOTW a go at some point but Link's Awakening seems like a more palatable entry point to the series. Not that I've never played a Zelda game but I've never beaten one.

i was hoping for a metroid prime trilogy announcement. i rented the first one when it first came out and didnt play much of it. havent touched any of them since. so ive wanted to, and obvs a switch port would make that way more convenient.
link's awakening and luigi's mansion look good, and the BOTW sequel was nice, but nothing else excites me, unfortunately. not into smash, animal crossing never grabbed me, witcher 3 i have on xbox and pc, astral chain doesnt interest me and i really disliked the daemon x machina demo.

i played the 3ds demo when that came out for about 10 minutes. before that i maybe played melee. played a bunch of the original on n64 with friends, which is where most of the fun came from. fighting games just never grab my attention. so i havent played it enough in the last 19 years to tell one way or the other how shit i am.

Bought a pro controller. It’s SOFUGGINGOFOMG
it'll be a big help with hollow knight. i played a good portion of the game before getting a pro controller, using the analog stick on the joycon. there's some precision striking and platforming you need to do and for a 2d environment the stick was awful. I'd constantly be hitting down when trying to do a strike bounce, which would usually result in some monumental loss of health or death. you can you the joycon 'd-pad' buttons to move, but it's uncomfortable. having an actual d-pad on the pro controller will get rid of some of those issues.
Oh god you have to have a pro controller. I don't know how anyone is playing without one. It's so damn comfortable. It's like the Gamecube controller had sex with an XBOX contoller. Love it.

I haven't booted it up yet and might not for a while but for $3 I couldn't pass it up. The reviews on it are solid. It takes up more memory than the Switch even comes with but I have plenty of space on my SD card. I believe it's 30 FPS instead of the 60 FPS on other consoles, and it has some dumbed down graphics.
It's still that cheap on the playstation store (at least in Canada)

Trying to convince myself to buy a Switch. I want Mario Maker 2. Badly. I think my kids would enjoy some of the other games that I've seen, but this one is all Daddy's.
Shouldn’t have to try too hard. It’s the best console of the last ten years. There’s a very solid library of games, it’s portable, and more and more games are being ported to it.
I have yet to use the mobile aspect of it. I just feel the games need a full size screen.
I use mobile all the time. When my girlfriend's using the TV or we're hanging in a different room than where the dock is. Also brought it to work to kill time on my breaks and for trips.
Don't think about it just go buy one. Once I got the cash that's what I did. I don't regret it. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is out soon and the whole family is looking forward to that one. Hoping to get Mario Maker 2 as well, sometime soon.

The WiiU is probably my favorite console of all time of that little touch pad that I can have my youngest go on and watch Netflix or Youtube or whatever the fuck in her room while I watch what I want to watch on the tv haha.

I actually just recently started playing more in docked mode. Kiddo usually has the TV on use watching Sesame so I’ll just grab my switch and play games on it. I’ve always preferred handhelds to consoles though.

outside of mario odyssey and some BOTW, ive pretty much been exclusively handheld mode for everything. bought an extra charging cable and my switch hasnt been in it's dock for i dont know how many months now. and the only reason i used it docked for odyssey was cause of the motion controls, which wouldve been awkward as hell with the joycons attached.
I despised the joycons. I've had a pro controller from the first two days of having my Switch. I think that may be part of my issue.
