I havent started it yet but I've posted the trailer over in the Netflix thread. Looks great. I read that E.T., The Goonies and shit like that were mandatory for the cast.

It's fantastic. Best contingent of skilled child actors I've seen in a long time. Great storytelling, great characters. I enjoyed it

I blew through this on Sunday. It's absolutely fantastic. Probably my favorite Netflix original show to date.

The child actors are all really really good.

One of the things that really stood out to me was the fact that even though it was set in the early 1980s, I didn't feel like they were bashing us over the head with "let's get nostalgic" type of shit that stuff set in the 80s usually tosses out there. I thought they captured what it was like in a small town/suburban America in the 80s perfectly. At least, how I remember growing up in the mid/late 80s in a suburb of Chicago.

Also, the music on this show is excellent. Both the soundtrack and the score.

Agreed. LOVED the music/score. Very well done. This one is a bonafide hit. 8.5/10

The creators mentioned him as an influence, so I figured I'd ask.

Plus, I fucking love John Carpenter.

I didn't get much of a Carpenter vibe from this.

To me, it's dead on for early Spielberg. I guess now that I'm thinking about it, though, there is an element of Carpenter in the way they build tension. But overall this show is much more in line with E.T., Close Encounters and Jaws than it is Halloween, Escape from NY, and Big Trouble in Little China. Of any Carpenter movie, I'd say it's closest to Christine.

The music for the creepy ass title is Carpenter. There is a few The Thing shout outs.

The creators said they were influenced by Spielberg, Stephen King and John Carpenter.

I did see a poster for The Thing on one of the kids' walls in one the clips.

I should just shut the fuck up and watch it.

Only 2 episodes in at the moment. It's ok, but I feel like i've already seen it. There is just so much reiteration of things that have come before it.

Episode 5 is amazing. The Flea and the Acrobat analogy is amazing as well as the Vale of Shadows scene.

Just finished Narcos. In between this marvelous series and Parenthood, with the latter being a favorite of the wife who has been hogging the TV all week. I will probably resume watching with episode 5 of this show tonight.

I have 2 episodes left. I'm well into it now. I was sceptical to start with has it just seemed to be an amalgamation of all the creator's favourite films, but as the story has progressed, it is clear that it has its own story to tell. Hoping they stick the landing now. Looking at the show's IMDB score, I'm quite positive that they will.

5 in now and this is bloody brilliant, though it's an incredibly sad show. Child abuse, grief, abduction, breakdowns. The feels, oh the feels.

Great show from top to bottom.

Everything they did really was well executed and the soundtrack was perfect really. Definitely hoping for a season 2

Well why don't they have it done already? Losers.

Kinda hoping Matthew modine's character survived somehow.

Just finished this. All in all, it was quite good. Not going to praise it quite as much as others, though. Maybe it's 'cuz it's meant to be an homage/throwback to those old flicks but there was a lot of stuff that was really cliché, predictable, and corny. Fair amount of stuff that didn't make much sense, either. Winona's character was really annoying. Granted, I get why she was screaming and blubbering the whole time, but still, there's only so much screaming and blubbering I can take. Also, no one gave a fuck about Barb. As far as positives, though, I really liked the gang of kids a lot, very good intrigue, great atmosphere, looked convincingly like the era it was meant to be, the score was awesome, some good laughs and good emotional moments, too. I'll definitely tune into another season. 7/10

There was nothing bullshit about the "pretty" thing.

I'm taking 'bullshit' to mean forced or insincere, which the 'pretty' stuff I felt was none of. It seemed those two had a meaningful connection. And they're coming into that age where expressing a thing like that could be incredibly awkward, and they waded into it comfortably. Thought it came of just really, nice, amidst a lot of heartbreaking things going on around them.

Exactly. She lives a miserable Tetsuo-like existence. Let the poor kid have some moments that make her feel human.

well this was super. HUGELY derivative, obviously, but of everything that I loved about 80s 'quest' movies, really.

Did anyone notice that all of the loose ends that Dustin and Lucas were pissed off about Mike not tying up in their last D&D were direct parallels to the outstanding questions left unanswered by the series? I liked that nice little touch.

"We need energy for out travels. For stamina." I shall now find reasons to say this every day.

Loving this series so far... not digging Winona Ryder's character or Steve. Winona's scenes are all the same w/ her just not being able to pull herself together. And Steve, he plays a good heel... but he's no face. He'll never be a face, especially after he smashed that camera.

Winona Ryder would be my one major complaint about the series. Pretty terrible actress.

I thought she was pretty great.

Not really getting the 'found her annoying' thing. Her character has a history of poor mental health, then her kid disappears, then he might be dead, then she speaks to him through the lights, then finds out he's in an alternative evil dimension.

If she'd have been played differently then it would have felt off.

She just has odd mannerisms and comes across a bit full on, when every one around her was very relaxed and natural. Plus I imagine she steals from the set.

Again, and I don't think I can stress this enough, her child had been kidnapped by a monster made of skin and teeth into a dimension of evil. Given those very specific circumstances, I'd suggest she played it pretty realistically a.ka. batshit mental.

I get that she's a mom and her son is missing and in some alternate dimensional danger, I would have preferred the character in general written a little more headstrong and not so manic.

Regarding Winona's character, I just felt like she had only two ways of delivering her lines, shouting or sobbing, and it got grating after awhile. Like I said, I understand why she'd be so emotional but it would've been nice if she were able to mix it up a bit more and be a little more pulled together at times or at least expressing herself in a couple of other tones.

Because feeling human means feeling pretty? She was raised in a lab. She would have no idea what pretty even means but of course, she's a girl, so obviously she must have some instinct that tells her that to be accepted, she has to be pretty. Why did she need a make-over (which looked ridiculous)? Why not just pass her off as a boy which had already worked more than once? Why would being told she's pretty matter to her? Why wasn't their friendship and acceptance of her for who she was good enough? I understand the need to establish the emotional connection but there were other, better ways they could have done it (like the scene where Winona was holding her and comforting her in the pool).

I like Winona, but her acting was way too much. A blubbery mess and I get the reasons, but it got irritating fast.
Also, why do all the women/girl characters have to have love interests? Why not have Eleven be amazing without needing to be in love?

also Joyce didn't have a love interest, really, and blubbering aside she was a very strong female character. Just acted by someone who thought they were doing pantomime.

Honestly, next to Eleven. Joyce has to be the toughest character to get right. You have to feel for her as she descents in what people think is madness yet its hope for her. I would like to see the roles reversed next season with Joyce being the tough one while trying to rescue Hopper with whatever deal he made.

She's telepathic so it can be pretty reasonably inferred that her only understanding of the things you're calling bullshit come from the minds of 11 year old boys. Your quibbles seem really nit picky to me. But, to each their own.

It was three pre-teen boys making her over. If she'd have come out looking like an extra in Sense and Sensibility it would have been crazy.

This is correct. Think of all the female poster girls in the 70s and the 80s. The fact these boys didn't put soccer balls in el's shirt for boobs is commending.

Finally finished this and I'm so ready for season two.

On the subject of the "pretty". I get why some people are finding it a little weak. But I do think it's important to understand that Eleven didn't give a fuck if the world thought she was pretty. She wanted Mike to think she was pretty. Or at least she enjoyed the idea. Because she was in wuv wit him. Awwwwww. And why not? Mike was awesome. He was loyal and good and honest and would do anything to help his friends. She had never known anyone like him and his friendship probably changed her entire outlook on people. Seeing as how the only people she ever knew before that were of the supreme dick variety.

I can't say enough good things about this show. it took me back to my childhood growing up in the 80's in Upstate, New York... it was like an X-Files/Goonies hybrid.

from the aesthetics to the retro synth theme-- top notch.

Can't wait for the second season.

Eleven was such a sweet and powerful character; she will definitely be a huge star one day... such a captivating little actress.

I read what he wrote in terms of her being a fictional character and so live or die on the show 'El' isn't with us anymore currently. Then in speaking of her character with the show over for now, 'El was such a...' doesn't implicate her outcome one way or another. Kinda like, 'the fat kid was funny...' or 'the mom was a hot mess'.

    Enjoy the finale, bud.

    Yeah... what Percussion said.

I'm usually pretty respectful with spoilers and such.

I know that I hate it when inconsiderate pricks ruin storylines for me.

This doesn't look original at all, I mean there's "inspired by" and then there's simply ripping things off.

David Harbour is great but no I'm not even going to bother with this.

It's good seanny. I recommend highly and I know of a movie that I sent your way one time you rather enjoyed.

Interestingly enough, they have cut a different Trailer for this that focuses on nothing but 11. They actually did a good enough job with it that I want to watch it again.

I know what you mean but this is "inspired by" not "ripped off from". While definitely and intentionally going for an early 80s feel it doesnt actually rip it's story from any film of that era. I don't think. But the casting is dynamite and that was a must for me as bad child acting has ruined a lot of shit like this for me. Anyway I'd suggest giving the first episode a shot. You'll pretty much be able to tell if it's for you by that point.

It's all about your expectations going into it. I'll tell you right now, you're right in that it's not the most original thing ever, but the people that made the show weren't trying to reinvent the wheel. It's an homage to great 80's sci-fi/horror that also happens to be it's own kick ass story.

If you watch Stranger Things with the expectation that it's something revolutionary, or some shit, than you'll be disappointed. If you watch it and accept it for what it is, you'll love it.

We just watched the first episode last night and I thought it was great. Didn't feel like a binge watch type of show for us but will definitely see this one through.

Yea I'm taking it slow too, 5 episodes in now. It would be a great weekly show as I can imagine the discussion and analysis that would go on week to week. I feel like shows build more buzz that way as opposed to Netflix releasing it all at once- with their method it gets about a week or 2 of buzz before dying out, like this thread.

Anyway the show is still great and I look forward to finishing the last 3 episodes.

Finished this. Loved it. One of the best things on TV this year for sure.

I absolutely love Eleven. Whenever she used her powers it was an awesome moment. I thought Winona Ryder was quite good and played the character appropriately. I'd like to see both of these two up for awards when we get to Emmy/Golden Globe season (Winona for lead actress and Eleven for supporting). I don't think Winona should win necessarily but is deserving of a nod. Eleven could rightfully win.

    Spoilery stuff:

I really love this poster they use on Netflix:
