lol Butler went forward and made a play he would make 10/10 times. The ball was kinda thrown to him and they had Marshawn Lynch in the backfield. That was the definition of a terrible terrible call on the offensive end.

Browner knew the pick play might be coming so he jammed the receiver who was supposed to make the screen (hugely underrated part of the play). Butler made a terrific read, undercut the route and made an impressive play to not just break up the pass but intercept it. If you want to say the Pats did nothing notable on that play, or it was a routine interception that gets made 10 out of 10 times, you're foolish.

Sure it was a bad play call, I don't disagree with you there, but that doesn't mean the tremendous preparation and execution by the Pats defense is moot.

By all means, except for the Giants. I have a buddy that reminds me of this all the time. Trust me, it's not that hard to shrug and point to the difference in Super Bowl titles in the last 20 years. Giants have two, and they're against the Pats. But the Pats..... well, they have 5 in that span. Do trust me, I don't sweat those losses.

As a Dodgers fan my opinion has become that I would far rather have a losing season than a playoff exit. No question about it.

all you have to do is watch the Do Your Job special the NFL Network aired about the Pats after the Seattle Super Bowl. The work they put into defending a play they weren't sure would even be called is simply phenomenal. Cuz Butler got burned on this play in practice. Multiple times.

    Not in-game though.

Falcons began to implode much earlier than the drive to nowhere. Burning timeouts in the 3rd quarter. Challenging a call that only needed a single replay to realize it was a great, miracle catch.

It was a bit of both. Falcons definitely played into it, but the Pats made plenty of plays of their own and took control of the game in the final two drives. All depends where you wanna move the lever. It was a historic Superbowl, but it seems all the Pats Superbowl games in this era have been historic, including the ones they've lost.

I don't expect a back to back though. I expect Romo might land in the AFC, probably the Broncos. All the Broncos need is a QB and they are automatically a Superbowl contender, regardless of how good KC or Oakland should be next season. They have the defense, weapons on both sides, etc. Its early and free agency/the draft hasn't even happened yet. I'm just thinking Belichick might let go of a lot of pieces that helped them win a SB. He just doesn't pay everybody and while that's helped maintain this long dynastic run. Managing the cap, etc. It can lead to light spots on the roster.

I expect at the very least, the AFC could be a little more open next season. Not as much as the NFC with all the teams with talent out there.

Some quick thoughts as my euphoria and disbelief from last night starts to fade:

Lady Gaga's performance really was excellent.

The Edelman catch off the deflected pass was magical. And I mean that literally - it looked like the ball floated there for a moment waiting for him to grab it when it should have been falling to the grass an inch below. It really does seem like these wild catches tend to happen in the Super Bowl at key moments, like the Kearse and Tyree ones.

Julio had some incredible catches of his own except they weren't flukey just incredibly skillful. The way he manipulates his body and gets his feet down inbounds making it look effortless while reaching for a ball against the sideline is like artwork.

I would have voted Brady for SB MVP despite the pick-6 since he had 466 yards (SB record) and was the most important player on the field (62 pass attempts ffs) but James White with his 3 TDs, 2-pt conversion and 110 receiving yards would have been worthy too. Couldn't really go wrong either way there. The winning TD run in OT was a great play since he got hit about 2 yards shy and pushed forward with defenders on him.

The Pats are in a great position to repeat with Gronk coming back, a good amount of salary cap and the potential to get something back for Jimmy G (draft picks or players). Hightower needs to be re-signed or franchised IMO. Logan Ryan's probably gone, Martellus Bennett possibly too but overall there shouldn't be major turnover.

Yea and he caught all 4. They should have gotten him the ball more but Matt Ryan had only 23 pass attempts. The Pats actually doubled up the Falcons in plays: 93 vs 46.

I'm not a hater. I am an indifferenter.

I was trying to cheer Caito up but the Pats did a much better job of that.

"As great as today is, in all honesty, we're five weeks behind 30 teams in the league in preparing for the 2017 season." -Bill Belichick after winning a Super Bowl. That's why he's the king.

"If it was up to my wife, she would have me retire today. She told me that last night three times. And I said, ‘Too bad, babe. I’m having too much fun right now.’" -Tom Brady.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. Congrats Fro, I hate you and the rest of the spoiled Boston sports fans; I was apprehensive all game, even at 28-3, because of who you have at QB.

The fumble on 3rd and 1 made me uncomfortable, my sense of dread increased from that point forward; I turned the game off at the start of OT because I knew the inevitable would happen. Brady is GOAT now, no discussion; Belichek also.

You have to be one of the favorites for next year, as all of Belichek/Brady/McDaniels/Patricia will be returning, plus a healthy Gronkowski. I hate you.

Not acceptable. I don't care if he was triple teamed, Kyle's job is to put his playmakers in a position to succeed. Motions, quick screens, rubs, reverses; he needed to touch the ball 12-15 times yesterday. Also, why the Hell did they go away from the run game? 18 carries against that QB is not enough; get under center and run the damn ball, even if you have the newly crowned MVP.

Tyson, I don't think the offensive coordinator is the guy to blame in the Super Bowl. Head coach needs to step up. Dan Quinn seemed a little ho-hum for my taste. That's what you get from a young coach. He definitely was caught up in the bright lights.

That stat really sums up this Superbowl, how that turnaround happened and what amazing credit the Pats deserve to sticking to a gameplan. Even at three and four scores down they weren't forcing it - they had a 12 play drive, then an 11 play drive and it all took so much out of the Falcons defense. Most teams would have tried to force it and get back in the game through gambling on a Hogan or a Mitchell going long and opening the game up but they were happy to take what yardage they could get where they could get it.

On the other side the Falcons just couldn't stay on the field. Their high-power offense had them moving the ball quickly and they were either punting or scoring each time without ever taking much time off of the clock.

Really? I'm a Mets fan and I'll take the playoffs whenever I can get them. But I'm not one of those guys who lives and dies with his teams to the point where it affects my day to day life. Of course I love watching my teams win but that's all I do: watch. I don't get too upset when they lose only because I can't do anything to help them win or lose.

All they had to do was run it up 16 and 8 minutes left on 3rd and 1(Ryan fumbled on a 5 step drop back, why?) and run it on 2nd and 3rd down from the 22 yard line in FG range. If they do any of those things this Patriots comeback doesn't happen and Brady's yardage is considered garbage time yards. Yes the Patriots took complete advantage and smelled blood but the Falcons just imploded and were too stubborn to run it when they had to.

That's just silly. I would agree if you said, "a playoff exit similar to how the Falcons lost." A normal hard fought playoff loss is way better than a losing season, come on.

living in Charlotte and becoming a Panther's fan by location I would have much rather them have had a performance like the Falcon's did in the superbowl than just get the shit kicked out of them for 60 minutes like they did last year

we would be back they said

a young team that will only get better they said

The Panthers still only lost by 1 possession and were in the whole game though. I would much rather lose the way the Panthers lost. I could sleep at night and not have nightmares.

The Falcons loss ranks up there with the way the Rangers lost to the Cardinals in the World Series back in 2011.

The Falcons probably outcoached themselves. A lot of teams play conservative football in those situations and they end up in trouble against the Pats. A lot of the more aggressive teams in the past have been the ones that give them the most trouble. They thought being aggressive was the answer and its not always the case. Bleed the clock and kick the field goal. Course, its always easy to second guess in hindsight.

Belichick would've gotten absolutely destroyed for not calling timeouts had Seattle run it in with Lynch in Superbowl 49. But that didn't happen and instead it was spun as Belichick was playing mind games with Pete Carroll, forcing them to make a quick decision without using any timeouts. Belichick even admitted he felt something didn't look right which is why he didn't call the timeout. He might've been lying out his ass or not, who knows. I think even Pete said he threw it because if they didn't get it, he knew it would stop the clock and they would run it.

Sometimes the simplest play call is the right play call.

I don't think anyone is playing monday morning quarterback in this situation. I am pretty sure everyone was scratching their heads as soon as he dropped back to pass when they were inside 40 yards for a FG.

Quinn won the Superbowl as DC of the Seahawks, so I would sincerely hope that he didn't get caught up in the moment. Yes, I will blame the Falcons OC. Why, with the lead, was the ball being snapped so quickly? Milk the play clock, don't snap it unless there are less than 5 seconds. Why did he go away from the run game? Why did Jones not get more touches?

I strongly disagree with this, though my point of view differs from yours as I've never been fortunate enough to see my team (Vancouver Canucks) win a title. As a long suffering fan, who still lives with the heartbreak of two game 7 losses in the Championship series, I desperately want to see my boys win the Cup just once before I die. The sense of urgency gets heightened each time the playoffs start and I'm on the outside looking in. Life is fickle, there is no guarantee I'll live to see my team pull a Cubs/Red Soxesque type moment...

In general clock management is an underdeveloped piece of coaching. For the most part until you are a head coach you are not involved with a lot of the decisions. Its hard to practice in practice. Many coaches get the obvious ones right late in games. (though some struggle IE:Zim this year) Its the stuff that is going on earlier that they mismanage and it often goes unnoticed.

You guys don't know how it feel because none of your baseball teams have ever won their division 4 straight times as the glorious Dodgers have. We have made the playoffs probably 10 times since our last Championship and not even a World Series appearance to show for it. It's infuriating.

The Twins have made it 7 times since their last championship and won 1 series. 2002 2003 2004 2006 2009 2010 and they also lost game 163 in 2008. I'd say its pretty damn close.

Nope, no Monday morning QB'ing here. Plenty of 4th quarter what the hell are you thinking not running the ball in field goal territory QB'ing happened on Sunday, though.

You should become a Mariners fan GBF, they haven't made the post-season in over 15 years. None of those pesky division titles or anything. Sounds right up your alley.

What's infuriating is having to watch a 70-80 win team play essentially meaningless baseball for 162 games a few years after regular playoff berths.

I think (hope?) he'll be a fine head coach; a smart young offensive mind who will be working closely with a) a retread QB hoping to keep his NFL dream alive or preferably b) a rookie QB drafted in the top half of the 1st round (Watson/Mayfield/Falk).

There's actually a Choose Your Own Adventure that someone has put together for the 49ers QB search.

    I got a D+

    1) Deshaun Watson
    2) Blaine Gabbert
    3) Antonio Pipkin

    FA money spent: $5 million
Draft picks spent: R1 (#2 overall)

Not sure how spending 28 million on Brian Hoyer and signing washed up Ponder is preferable to just rolling with the number 2 pick in the draft but whatever

The analysis they have is about Watson not being ready to start immediately and having a year learning under Hoyer is better than throwing him in the deep end.

That was pretty addictive, played it a dozen times; my best score was an A- with Watson/Schaub/Ponder. Got fired once because I told Shanahan that I had my own plan...

Whats interesting is it leaves out a ton of options at QB this year. Its good but it could be even better.
