Is it too late for the Yankees to throw 20 million dollars at another team to fix their problems?

    RIP Jose Fernandez

The 24 year old right-hander was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts for the Marlins this season. He died in a boating accident off Miami Beach this morning. Likely would have been a Cy Young candidate for years to come. Tragic.

Fucking awful news to wake up to.

He really was such an exciting player to watch. Too tragic man. Just found out his girlfriend was pregnant too. Fucking awful.

Dude was so much fun to watch, and he always had a smile on his face. Can't take anything for granted, that's for sure.

    I love this

Fernandez was a gem. I enjoyed watching him pitch even when he was smoking the Braves. What an awful loss.

There's not a lot I can say at this time other than I'm really going to miss him. He was an absolute joy to watch, from his enthusiasm to his dominance on the mound.

    RIP Jose

And they had pushed his start back from today to tomorrow so that he'd match-up with the Mets. Hate to go into the what-ifs, but damn.

    Sox in the playoffs.

Have a good amount of AL MVP candidates. Have probably the manager of the year, though I can't stand him as a manager. Can they win it all, despite him being around? They did in 2013. I think they could just as easily fizzle out in the ALDS.

I really want Sox/Cubs though. Cubby fans deserve it, the Sox have gotten 3 wins over the last decade. Lester to close it out in Game 7 in Fenway. Theo probably goes down as one of the greatest personnel people in MLB history. The architect behind getting the Sox and Cubs their first titles since the Dinosaur age.

Gonna be biased and give maddon moty. If cubs win it all he has to win.

I would love cubs/sox cubs/Yankees and at one point this year there was a dream of cubs/white Sox. Chicago would legit burn in that scenario though.

Cubbies at 100 wins and going. This year has already been an ultimate wet dream. I will be going to 1 or 2 of the playoff games and I can't fucking wait.

I would love to see Cubs vs Red Sox in the World Series. I would feel a little bad beating them though. My grandfather is a huge Cubs fan (from northwest Indiana) and is 93 years old and likely won't be around in another year.

One of the more emotional home runs you'll ever see as Dee Gordon hits his first homer of the season in the Marlins' first at bat today. He started the at bat hitting righty using Fernandez's helmet he was in bits rounding third

Really great moment with that opening home run. You can just tell that whole team loved Fernandez dearly. Every game I watched of his was a delight.

This has got to be a tough game for the team to play, but Jose would be proud of the way they're playing tonight.

I'm just going to pretend that was the only thing that happened tonight in baseball. Everything else was made null and void.

Fucking Jays. Sure let's go and get in a fight with a team that doesn't have anything to play for realistically. Injure a couple of your own players too. Seems like a good plan.

Yea, so much for the AL East being a race. The division winners are now all set: Red Sox, Indians, Rangers... Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers. Wild Card spots still up for grabs but looking like Jays vs Orioles and Mets vs Giants.

I think the Red Sox and Cubs are the clear best teams in each league and if I had to pick a wild card team who could put together a run, it would have to be the Giants. If I were the Cubs I'd be a little scared of getting them in the first round.

I told you I'm very pro Cubs but just saying, how Cubs would it be to win 103 games and lose in the first round?

I really haven't followed the NL at all this year though. I'm seeing the Giants as a threat since they still have Bumgardener and Cueto right? And they're basically a dynasty so they know how to get it done in October. Tough draw for you if that's the case, would much prefer to face the Mets.

If any team would come with nerves in the post season it would be the Mets. Not only that but they won the regular series against the boys in blue this year.

I would prefer giants as I think they take the series. However revenge against the mets for last year would be great.

As for the red Sox, the one thing that I think hurt the cubs last year was they came into the nlcs with something like 19 straight wins. You can only be red hot for so long before you fall. The red Sox are on a crazy tear like this now.

Yea I agree the hot streak doesn't mean they'll plow through the playoffs. Rather, I like them to win the AL because they have easily the best lineup in baseball, have 2 top line starters in Porcello and Price (granted Price has been a bad postseason pitcher in the past), plus an elite closer. They are a well rounded team that also happens to be rallying around future hall of famer David Ortiz in his final season. There's magic in the air around here.

I still think home field advantage is important. If they can get the 1 seed and have teams coming through Fenway for game 1, my confidence will be brimming.

I would have to argue the Cubs have the best line up in baseball. The wins and the stats don't lie. Granted, the AL is a tougher division but between the pitching and the hitting the Cubs really are solid. I don't know the Red Sox line up that well though.

I suppose it's hard to argue AL vs NL. The Red Sox have close to 100 more runs than the Cubs but they also don't have to bat their pitcher. The Rockies also have significantly more runs than the Cubs but they play half their games in the stratosphere.

Anyway saying the Cubs are solid is an understatement, they're the best team in baseball without question.

Toronto fan throws a can of beer at Hyun Soo Kim as he's catching a fly ball against the outfield fence but he still makes the out. Always interesting in the Rogers Centre.

A very good hitting season from a DH isn't going to even come close to winning MVP especially when you have one of the best young players in baseball having a huge season in your outfield. Sentimental value means nothing.

    Was too busy going crazy.

Fucking amazing being at a walk-off in an elimination game.

Bring on the Rangers, we've got some bad blood.

Amazing moment. Pleased for you Pabs! Must have been some experience.

Plenty is going to be said about this obviously, but Showalter has said Britton wasn't hurt so it was just an absolutely mind boggling decision not to put him in the game. When one run ends the game and ends your season, there is old school mentality kind of stupid and then there is is not playing a guy who just put together one of the best seasons of all time from a reliever kind of stupid.

“Yes (Orioles manager Buck Showalter) told us to be ready for two innings,” Britton said as the Orioles worked out in advance of the wild-card game Tuesday night at the Rogers Centre.
“Any time I get asked, that’s fine. It’s not something I haven’t done before. Roles are roles, until they’re not. You have to be ready for anything in a game like this. So just be ready when you’re number is called.”

    ok Buck

What a great game, and an awesome ending. I'm hoping for an epic Giants/Mets pitching duel tonight.

The crazy thing with Britton is there were TWO places where he should have been brought in. The bottom of the 9th when Donaldson, Eddie and Bautista were due up and again in the 11th where the top of the order was due up. They even dodged a bullet in the 9th because Donaldson led off with a double. You'd think with how close it was that time to the O's losing Buck would have realized that he needs to use his best pitcher for the best Jays hitters.

Yeah they got away with it in the 9th when O'Day coaxed the ground ball for the double play which still didn't make it the right call - I read he has a 30something% ground ball rate versus Britton's ridiculous 80% rate. In both situations what made it more baffling is the inning was already going wrong and Britton STILL wasn't brought in - in situations where a essentially a base hit can end the season. Ubaldo had put men on base and has been a home run waiting to happen throughout his career yet stays in to pitch to one of the most dangerous power hitters in baseball. Insane.

I don't even think you even pitch to Edwin in that scenario either with a man on third and second open.

In other news, a meteor shower occurred near the stadium last night.

Overall, crazy night in Toronto and some piss poor decision making all around.

good opener going on here between the Sox and Indians. Papi barely beating the tag on a clutch double in the 8th down by 1.

Red Sox won't even get past the Indians. A fucking garbage franchise and their only championships came on the backs of the worst drug cheats in baseball history. Dog shit organization. The only person worse than anone who ever played for the Red Sox is Tony LaRussa. Drug dealing, cheating sack of shit. Fuck the Cardinals, fuck the A's and absolutely everyone on the Red Sox can eat 100 dicks.

I would be so thrilled if there was a bus filled with guys like Tony LaRussa and Barry Bonds and Will Clark and McGuire and Sosa and Matt Williams and Bumgarner and Posey and David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez and Pedroia and Wakefield and David Ross, and Dave Stewart and all of the other steroid cheaters and general assholes in baseball history and their bus driver decides to drive 90 mph directly smashin head on into the Red Sox current team bus and everyone had to beat each other's heads in with their baseball bats and everyone fucking died at the end.

I see a lot of prognosticators come out when you go down 0-1. Convenient time to make your bold prediction. But no matter, the Sox will still win this series. And the Dodgers will go nowhere as always.

You as a Red Sox homer going with the Red Sox to win the world series is a bold prediction?

No sorry that was sarcastic, since picking a 5 game series after game 1 is over is the opposite of bold and neither of them would have posted that if game 1 went the other way.

Sox/Cubs doesn't look so hot now. Theo was about to go down as one of the greatest personnel people of all time. Not only would both organizations he helped turn around in turn make it to the series and Lester would've probably closed it out in Fenway. Now it looks like Francona will instead get his revenge on John Henry for leaking stuff about him being a pill popper. Its fine either way, since Francona with his eyes closed or popped out of his mind, still manages better than Farrell, who seems more lucky than good, cost them at least 10 games during the season. Which is incredible for a manager in baseball. About the only talent the man possesses is successfully fooling around with the female reporters.

So Giants/Rangers or Giants/Blue Jays? I think Cleveland loses to either the Jays or Rangers. Rangers/Jays should be a blood bath though.

Did something happen to the Cubs?

Blue Jays take a 2-0 series lead. I'm not one to call a series early, like I don't think this game today is "must win" for the Red Sox, but when you lose the first 2 games at home that's tough especially given the raucous environment in Toronto they're headed to.

Sox-Jays would be a great ALCS.

That was a squeaker. Kershaw didn't look sharp but got out of a critical jam and wound up with a W. Hopefully this is a postseason confidence booster for him.

As the sign in the stadium said last night.

Would rather get punched in May than knocked out in October

    Fuck Odor.

Was another great atmosphere last night. Shame I don't have a chance of being at an elimination game for the next series since I have Game 3 tickets.

Tough series. Well played by the Indians. Obviously the playoffs are a bit unpredictable and it only takes a 3 game cold spell to send you home. I'll be rooting for the Blue Jays in the ALCS and I expect they'll win it. It's not that I dislike the Indians but they're a pretty boring team without much star power so I think they'd be a snoozer in the WS.

Awesome season for the Red Sox though. That was the best lineup I've ever seen. I don't know if the stats back that up (they probably scored more runs in the Manny-Ortiz era) but this lineup was dynamic with so many guys exceeding expectations. Ortiz with the best final season ever by a major league hitter and one of the best few seasons ever by a 40 year old, leading the majors in OPS and the AL in RBIs. Shame to see him retire given that he's arguably the best hitter in the league and has meant so much to the sport but it's nice to go out before you decline. I expect he'll get into the hall of fame eventually despite the steroid accusation. It was nice to see him get so much love nationally this season.

Betts, Bogaerts and Bradley will be fun to watch for years to come. I think Betts deserves MVP but not sure he'll get it.

This series loss still comes back to Jon Lester to me. It's disgusting that they let him walk then signed David Price for about double what they could have extended Lester for when Lester was a proven winner in the AL East and the postseason. We're a top 5 payroll team so it's not like we couldn't afford it. That won't stop irking me for a while, how much they bungled that. But... the Porcello signing did a complete 180. Did NOT see that season (22-4, 3.15 ERA) coming from him. The Hanley deal also turned around and he mashed this year and found a comfort zone at 1st base (though he can now move to DH with Ortiz retired).

This team should be good for a while with their young talent but I'm not sure Porcello/Price will be enough of a 1-2 punch to win deep in the playoffs.

Anyway, good fucking season, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Would love to see a Cubs collapse. That win was just the Giants being the even yeared Giants.

Well... LA is blowing this lead. Sucks for Kershaw. 3 hours of pitching and it's all gone in 20 minutes.

These playoff games drag on so much. I swear the Giants are on their 4th pitcher in the 9th inning alone

But this is a nice Cubs comeback. Do the Giants always do closer by committee?

    And fuck these announcers.

Oh the cubs are gonna lose they aren't producing they can't rely on pitching and this is not the best team in baseball.

    After the 9th

are you surprised the cubs did this? They are the best team in baseball. No one should have doubted it.
