    The Cloverfield franchise

Apparently a sequel to Cloverfield was secretly filmed and it's out on March 11 of this year. The official trailer was just released. Regardless of what you think about the original film, it's pretty amazing that a major Hollywood movie was filmed without the public knowing about it.

I'm not sure who the one guy is, but that's definitely John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

JJ Abrams said this to Collider.com:
The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.

    Interesting.
Thank god it's not found footage. I liked the original (I bloody love monster movies) but the gimmick really hurts it's re-watchabilityness.

The other guy is John Gallagher Jr, he was in The Newsroom and Short Term 12.

I actually enjoyed the found footage approach in Cloverfield, but not every movie set in that universe needs to go that route.

It looks like Damien Chazelle, who wrote Whiplash, had a hand in writing this movie. That's intriguing.

I'm going to be pretty bummed if Cloverfield is only in the title for marketing purposes. I'm not expecting an entire film based around the big monster smashing shit, but there's going to be a pretty significant backlash if it or the parasites don't factor into the story somehow.

This is great news. I thought the first one was absolutely fantastic, so I'm very much looking forward to this.

Looks really interesting! I was so-so on the first one, and I'll second about it not being found footage. Big deal maker for me there. That and add in John Goodman, you have my money.

Geez... remember the marketing for the first movie? It was insane. I haven't heard any mention of Cloverfield in years, but I always remember this spoof trailer when the hype was starting to peak.

I fucking LOVE Cloverfield. Unforgettable theater experience and I've watched it probably four or five times. Very impressed they kept this under wraps and incredibly intrigued as to what in the hell it's going to be about. I honestly am a little disappointed it's not the found footage style as I think the first is one of the few movies that really excelled with that approach. Great news, stoked that I don't have to wait long to see it, either.

Was really hoping for another found footage movie. Seems like the only thing this movie has in common with the original is the title (going off of the trailer alone). A quick look on wikipedia shows that the movie was previously known as "The Cellar" and "Valencia", which to me suggests that they just slapped on the "Cloverfield" name".

Bad Robot might be trying to make Cloverfield into an anthology series of films. I'm still hoping that the supposed rewrites and reshoots were done to connect to this to the original film, though.

I think so. It'd be awfully deceitful of the marketing department if the movie doesn't feature the monster or some other giant supernatural threat.

Hasn't this movie already screened under the name Valencia and those who saw it said it had nothing to do with Cloverfield?

I'd imagine the people that have seen it had to sign NDA's and can't really make significant comments about it. Valencia was just the code name, I believe.

Bad Robot is asking for trouble if they put a giant glowing entity that roars in an advertisement and don't deliver some sort of supernatural menace.

I heard the movie wasn't originally tied into Cloverfield but they did a few re-shoots to add some things to tie it in.

Either way, I'm excited for it.

Yeah apparently it was a completely different low budget film that wasnt being picked up so they renamed it and re-shot a few scenes and flung the Cloverfield tag on it. Meant to be decent but.

Sound typical of movies in the 21st Century. No one is interested in a character driven plot about kidnap and survival so throw in a massive monster and tease special effects and its done!

The majority actually enjoyed this based on reviews.

I am excited for this. Even though it wasn't intended to be tied in with Cloverfield, they did some reshoots and rewrites to have it tie in so I am pumped to see this.

I don't think anyone honestly knows the answer to that question. From what I understand, they took a script called "The Cellar" and did some major rewrites to it.

We don't even know the premise of the movie yet, you turkey. The trailer and the Super Bowl ad are both pretty vague.

And what the fuck is wrong with massive monsters?

I disagree, sir. It took a novel approach to the "giant monster attacks a city" genre and executed it fairly well.

I'm not saying their is nothing wrong with massive monsters. I'm laughing at how it couldn't get commissioned until they added in a giant monster into a film that was neither wrote, directed or was to include a giant monster. Its basically cashing in on the name even though it was intended to have no involvement.

You can find everything you need to know about the film including what happens and the original full script on the net.

I enjoyed Cloverfield at the time - I actually watched it in New York and it was very strange coming out of the cinema and into the middle of Manhattan having just watched it get flattened in such a realistic way.

I watched again a couple of weeks ago and still think it is very well done. Some of the characters are annoying but I think they're written that way. People are annoying.

IMO Cloverfield is one of the best, if not the best, found footage movies made. I had an absolute blast watching it at the theater and I think it's held up extremely well over the years. I love that movie.

i got a lot more enjoyment from it because i'd followed the online build up which btw is happening with this film also.

theres a great subreddit where people are working their geek magic.

its well beyond my brains but its fun to know a bit of backstory going in.

Then the wife and I got to the theater too early and had to wait outside for about an hour in -40 C cold, freezing our asses off, to get in and have one of the best and most memorable theatrical experiences ever. Never experienced found footage better, feld like I was right there beside them. And we made it an annual new year's thing for about three years to rewatch it on DVD. Definitely going to give it another watching before we go see this one.

Watched Cloverfield this afternoon, it still holds up well but the lengths they have to go to to keep the justification of a dude carrying a camera at all times is desperate. and really hurts it.

Yeah, that requires some suspension of disbelief, but I'm able to look past it.

It's a movie about a giant monster tearing apart Manhattan, and the excuses for the guy carrying his camera and filming everything is where you find it hard to suspend your disbelief?

The head dude at Slashfilm.com said that Damien Chazelle (the writer of Whiplash) did a complete rewrite of that "The Cellar" script before any of the filmmakers got involved. So, no, it probably wasn't rewritten and/or re-shot at the last moment to "add more Cloverfield" to it.

Yes. Because, you know, of all the films I've seen featuring movies where I've believed and enjoyed what I'm seeing. Jurassic Park. Alien. Lord of the Rings. All fantastical. But I was into it. So yep, not quite sure your point stands up.

But none of those are found footage movies, so I'm not sure what they have to do with anything.

The guy has a camcorder on him at the time a gigantic sea monster arrives in Manhattan and starts destroying everything in sight. I don't see how the movie is hurt by him doing whatever he can to document such an insane occurrence.

What are some of the lengths he went to that you thought hurt the movie?

All this talk about the 'original story/script', it's really not hard to write and leak a script in order to create buzz about this film being retrofitted to now being a cloverfield film, if they did it's certainly worked in making a bit of intrigue.

of course thats what they did.

    its so smart.

everyone has been eating up the nonsense and piling on how "we know whats going to happen, i've read the script"

they bought the cellar script, rewrote it as valencia (codename) with added monsters, leaked original script, surprise released trailer, ARG in full swing.

they know what they are doing and it works so well.

I also dont think we've seen anything outwith the first 30/40 mins of the film in the trailer.

This definitely looks like a person outside the door of the bunker:

    https://i.imgur.com/BAlpPy3.png

You can also see a hand slap at the window in the trailer. If this movie is related to the original Cloverfield, then maybe this person's been infected by one of the parasites. Of course, it could be just as simple as the person wanting to get to safety.

reddit.com/r/10CloverfieldLane is interesting if you're into the ARG stuff.

I know it's sad but I refuse to give this move any money untill I know the monster is in it.

I think J.J is a twat, I hate this kind of promotion for a film. Call your film Cloverfeild but they won't say if it features the monster or not. No, go fuck yourself! Keep the story secret, hide the events surrounding the characters as much as possible but don't use the name of another film to try and tempt money out of people on the off chance the monster may be in it.

I will read up and spoil the film when it's out, then decide if it's worth my money. Not playing this stupid BS games anymore.

    it literally says in the last trailer;

    monsters, come...in many forms.

why is that not interesting and intriguing enough for you? you didn't see the monster in the trailer for cloverfield but you went off anticipation and the idea that it may be a monster movie, whys it not the same for this?

Stolen from Reddit, this would be perfect.

Starting with J.J. Abrams' statement about 10 Cloverfield Lane:

"The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible."
It is becoming increasingly likely that the film will not feature the monster from Cloverfield. Whatever is behind the house in the recent trailers is much smaller than the Cloverfield monster.

The ARG for Cloverfield as well as bonus content on the Blu-Ray established a backstory for the original film. The company Tagruato had a deep-sea drilling station named Chuai Station near New York. It turns out that Tagruato was aware of the parasites on the seabed, even photographing them, and the sea-drilling operation was just a front for more shady purposes. Under the ocean's floor was Seabed's Nectar, a substance used by Tagruato as the secret ingredient in their Slusho drinks. The parasites were consuming Seabed's Nectar in large quantities.

The ARG established that Seabed's Nectar has this effect on humans:

"Accelerated cell growth, increased strength, increased soft muscle tissue growth, sharper eyesight better digestion, smoother skin, and a full-body, pleasant sensation that one of our researchers actually described as "a wave of pure happiness.""

It becomes clear that the substance might have changed the parasites physically and behaviourally, leading to their highly aggressive nature in the original film. In addition, the first ARG showed Jamie from jamieandteddy.com consuming some of the substance herself, leading to extremely hyperactive and strange behaviour. Moreover, the military commentary of Cloverfield indicates that it was the "yellow substance" (Seabed's Nectar) around the parasites' mouth that caused Marlene to explode, not toxins produced by the creatures. Hence the substance reacts with living things unpredictably, both physically and behaviourally.

Chuai Station was ultimately destroyed by the Cloverfield monster, which had already been detected near to the station by Tagruato. This is pure theorising, but it is possible that the Cloverfield monster drank Seabed's Nectar itself and physically mutated to become something monstrous, although it could have already been this way to start with.
What's for certain is that Tagruato and Seabed's Nectar was a major plot element in Cloverfield's hidden backstory, and the main loose end from the original ARG. As the military commentary states:

"Tagruato's connection to CLOVERFIELD remains under investigation."

The current ARG has established that Howard works for a subsidiary of Tagruato, establishing the company as part of the backstory of the film once more. The fact that Tagruato is mentioned again leads to this theory: what if the world outside the bunker has been changed by more invading creatures that have consumed Seabed's Nectar and mutated into monsters?

This would not only neatly place 10 Cloverfield Lane into a shared universe without the need for the appearance of the original Cloverfield monster (that was likely killed by the bomb at the end of the film), but would also explain how there could be another monster of a different size behind the house in the recent trailers. The parasites that consumed Seabed's Nectar quickly overran Manhatten, so it is not a stretch that on a larger scale, more creatures mutated by the substance could have overrun the whole of the US, or even the world. What's more, the similarity of the roar at the end of the Superbowl trailer to that of the original monster could be explained by the similar effect of the Seabed's Nectar on other creatures.

I just hope there aren't zombies in this movie. Enough with the fucking zombies in everything.

I love the idea of Tagruato and the Seabed's Nectar being the connection to the original film.

I think that link and just a couple of dropped lines about "what happened in Manhattan" ect would just link the two enough and establish they are in the same universe to people not following the ARG.

Agreed. Although part of me hopes the original Clover monster isn't dead so he can return in another sequel.

Abrams once said that the monster from the first film is dead, but that it's mother is probably lurking around somewhere. Of course, JJ is always bullshitting, so who knows what to believe.

Doesn't matter if it dies at the end of the film if the events of this film aren't after that one anyway. Do we have a date of when this film is set?

This. This technically could be happening at the same time that Cloverfield was taking place.

How do you know it's badly written when you haven't seen it, turkey? Not to mention that the guy who wrote it was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Whiplash.

My feeling is that he was talking more about cloverfield.

I don't see how the first one was badly written.

For a guy that hated the movie so much, it's funny how he is constantly posting in this thread

The stuff that alternate reality game is revealing makes me think this movie is about aliens rather than the monster.

four posts out of 89 replies is hardly 'constantly.'

This interview with J.J. Abrams is pretty interesting:

I think J.J is a twat, I hate this kind of promotion for a film. Call your film Cloverfeild but they won't say if it features the monster or not. No, go fuck yourself! Keep the story secret, hide the events surrounding the characters as much as possible but don't use the name of another film to try and tempt money out of people on the off chance the monster may be in it.

I will read up and spoil the film when it's out, then decide if it's worth my money. Not playing this stupid BS games anymore.
J.J. says a monster is in it. It's not "the" monster. So...I assume you're still going to be a goof about it.

I'm looking forward to this a lot, but yeah if it's some sort of cliched bullshit like that I'll be pretty disappointed.
