Getting concerned at the number of centre half's going. Didn't want to go there this early but might not be anyone decent left by round four if not.

Wasn't Keown and Adams Arsenal's cb partnership in their pl heyday? Maybe my memory hasn't served me well here

Ferdinand, Campbell, Terry, Vidic, Stam, Carvalho. I'd argue King as well but can't be bothered, so I'll allow him seventh.

I dunno if you're being serious or looking for a bite but come on.

I can accept Terry and Ferdinand because they have the longevity in PL terms but Adams was every bit as good, certainly better than Vidic and Carvalho who had their weaknesses and in terms of longevity over Stam.

    Obviously you're joking about King.

Surely this has nothing to do with longevity? This is a collection of players who we're being asked to put together into a team based on how good they were in the Premier League, no?

Peter Atherton and Rory Delap have 700 Premier League appearances between them but they're not on my shortlist.

Also Ledley is as good as Adams and I'd have both over most of those names that Simon listed (not Stam obvs)

Well I would assume longevity would be used in a 'tiebreak' situation between 2 equally good players.

That's fair enough. I guess the point I'm making is that there are some fantastic players who then played on for too long or got injuries, or the other way players who were good but not great and then were suddenly great.

Personally if I'm assessing a team who has someone like that in the side then I'm thinking of that player when they were at their peak.

Peter Schmeichel had longevity but some of it was a couple of shit years at Man City. That shouldn't count against him. And it isn't Leeds United's Eric Cantona who got picked in the top 10.

Adams was absolutely not better than Vidic, Carvalho or Stam. Longevity is only relevant to an extent, I don't think anyone's going to be putting Henrik Larsson in but these are players who were utterly dominant for the time they were around, which in each case was a fair old amount of time. If you're talking longevity then Dion Dublin should be picked before Van Nistelrooy seeing as he scored more goals.

I'm not putting Adams down here at all - I admit he was very good and would have him down as seventh or eighth best of all time - and you can't claim it's an anti-Arsenal thing when I admitted that slag Campbell was better than him...I'm just saying there were better players than him. That dominant Arsenal side's defence was all about the unit - Adams was a big part of it, but on his own I don't think he was this incredible player you're making him out to be. An incredibly important player and part of Arsenal's history for sure, as the captain of arguably their best ever side, and that goal against Everton was a 'perfect' Premier League moment though it pains me to say it...but I am surprised to see him ranked so highly (though less surprised it's an Arsenal fan picking him). He was good, he wasn't great.

Alonso is a strange one in that he was never rated as a true superstar while he was here - in fact I would argue it's only been in the past few years at Bayern that people re-evaluated him as one of the best ever in his position, even at Madrid he was one of those that the pros talked up a lot, but wasn't necessarily appreciated by fans. Not that Liverpool or Madrid fans didn't rate him of course, but it was always other players that were talked about ahead of him.

If this thread had happened on the day he left the Premier League, I don't think he'd be anywhere near as high as he is now, yet years later and without having played a single minute of football here since, he's now seen as one of the greats. Weird.

I remember Liverpool fans being very big on Alonso. I thought he was great, to be honest. I seem to recall him being very highly spoken on on Rajah - what player could ask more than that?

On the other hand Benitez wanted to get rid of him to bring in Gareth Barry.

I hope these idiotic formations are taken into account when we're considering the relative qualities of the teams. My sturdy 5-4-1 is going to 1-0 you all to death.

Incidentally if someone could be fucked (i.e. not me) it would be possible to fuck all these players into an FM database (we could vote on each players' relative qualities) along with managers' traits etc and let the game decide who is best.

Ref was looking the other way.
What he was doing in the car park is his own business.

I do. Have to give credit where it is due though, he was a hell of a player and for a very long time.

Was arguably a top level player for 15+ years and was one of the most intelligent players in PL history. Surprised he didn't go earlier.

Still couldn't stand him when he was playing though.

Is there any reason that Simon has seemingly jumped ahead of me in the past 2 rounds? How hard is it to follow a 13 person list....

Anyway Ill take someone who I think people have forgot how good he was at one point.

Fair enough, must be a coincidence that the guy who picks your RFF team was messaging around yesterday suggesting a Yorke/Cole strikeforce.

I don't get the Beefy thing either - Yorke and Cole is a great shout because it's better than the sum of its parts.
