So Spurs well and truly fucked that one up.

It should at least give Pochettino some insight into who's lacking at the top level. Davies and Dier were very poor in both legs, Alli is all flicks and little substance.

They could have done with Dier being more injured and replaced by Wanyama at half-time.

Lapses of moments of concentration in a short spell cost them big time, thought they were doing well up til then. Moments like those it's what separate the big teams that can win at the pinch from those that can't though. Felt sorry that goal line clearance at the end denied extra tine though.

@Slare I think I had a slightly unfair advantage so instead of taking your money, I'd like you to donate it to official rajah charity, WaterAid.

    First half especially, really poor.

Frustrating but ultimately deserved given they should have had a penalty early on. Plenty of positives to be taken, not least the fact that IMO the last thing you could call that defeat is 'Spursy' - we didn't bottle it, I think it was almost the opposite in that we thought we had Juventus beaten at 1-0 and slackened off a little bit, we thought we were simply better than them. Against the top teams that bit of complacency is all they need (Dybala had done next to fuck all in the first hour, then came from nowhere to win the game), and we were naive to come at it with that mindset. Annoyingly, even once Dybala scored I was convinced we would still win it, and for a few minutes we really had them on the ropes...but then of course they got their shit together and defended brilliantly to kill it, by the end we were completely out of ideas.

It's a harsh learning curve, one that we need to remember in the future, but I'm confident that even in defeat we have shown our development from previous years. Now we just need to secure a top four spot and, hopefully, win the FA Cup, although I wouldn't bet against Mourinho shithousing United to another trophy.

That said, you have to give the Wembley PA huge respect for doing his best to distract the fans from a disappointing result as soon as the final whistle went by playing 'A Thousand Trees' by Stereophonics, a song about a young girl getting molested by a football coach.

I was the opposite in that I didn't see us getting back once we were behind, despite there being over 20 minutes to go. But then when it comes to Spurs, I always see things negatively. In some way it's probably the way I handle disappointment.

It was gutting though. Really gutting.

I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd definitely have a tickle on Liverpool now, assuming the odds are extremely long (they must be at the very least 15, though more likely 20+?). Not saying they're a sure thing obviously but it just feels like the fucking sort of thing they'd jog on and do now, with Salah scoring double hattricks in each remaining round and actually physically sodomising Ronaldo in the final.

Fucking shambles. Hardly any sense of attack at all.

Waiting until you're down 2 away goals to start showing signs of life is not a great strategy.

Mickey Mouse cup. All about the FA Cup anyways (at least until Saturday)

It was so negative over both legs. I could maybe excuse it first leg. But how can you do the same second leg knowing you need a goal and one goal from them puts you in such a difficult position?

Sanchez should've been dropped and Mata should've started. This might have been our worst performance this season.

Did he really say something about it not being new for the club and him knocking them out twice?

Did you see Pogba's play in this game? If he's going to be that awful just because he didn't start then fuck him. There was one absolutely shocking pass at the end and another awful pass he made.

Apparently he did. Angling for a mass of more cash this summer? More control? Or literally just wanted to remind people he's been successful before?

Those comments were just stupid. So according to him its normal for United to get knocked out of the competition like that, then bringing up two instances where he himself defeated the club he manages today.
The issue here isn't that we lost. No one was expecting United to go all the way in this competition. The problem here is that the team performance was shocking, against a side who we should've comfortably beat. But Mourinho's like "No worries, its cool. This stuff happens lol"

I don't think he's trying to get more cash for the summer. I'd imagine he was probably going to get that anyway. After a good start to the season, the last 3-4 months have been dreadful, and this Sevilla result was the culmination of that. And I think the manager has tried to play this down but done so with a very poor choice of words.

What's equally annoying is that some of our wins lately have been due to our luck papering over the cracks of the bad performances. We'll probably win the next few games 1-0 and pretend everything's cool.

Genuine question though where is he going to use the cash? There was a lot of talk about a winger but maybe it's centrally?

Herera out of contract this year or do united have an option?

Actually maybe it's fullbacks he wants...

I don't know what he can do if given all the cash he wants. Maybe address the defence.
But the truth of the matter is, he should be doing better with the team he has available. Going out and buying a player as big as Bale or Mbappe isn't going to change a thing.

When Chelsea are on song hazard runs it.

When things aren't going well literally the only attacking player who delivers is willian

    Massively underrated imo

Willian was fantastic tonight. Kante had a great game too.

That was the best Chelsea have played in months, really unlucky to lose 3-0. They didn't have much luck over the two legs - hit the woodwork four times in total.

What tonight probably showed is how much they are half-arsing it in the league.

Totally agree, they looked excellent going forward last night. Very unlucky to lose by that scoreline. If they hadn't have conceded the first so cheaply, it may have been a little different. Glad they're out though.

Let’s be honest with him in charge you’re a mess going forward always will be. Reason you’re 2nd is baring two good results at home against us and Chelsea and not including City & Spurs you’ve been consistent against the rest of a shite league.

He knew exactly what he was doing. You don't link a forward's arm like that by accident, he was trying to drag him down awkwardly to injure him. He's a fucking disgrace.

Commentators of course make very little of it and rave about what a brilliant player he is.

Yeah, exactly. He's intentionally aimed to fall onto his arm like that. Could've broke his arm.

I guess that rules out any small hope of United signing him this summer then. Bale might arguably be Madrid's best "big game" player. Dude almost always shows up and delivers in finals.

Really gutted for Salah. It basically ruined the game at an early stage and it was disgusting to see Ramos smiling afterwards. But I’m also chuffed for Bale making such an impact and showing that he’s still got it in these big games.

Great stuff. Very funny. Liverpool players and staff should be ashamed of themselves leaving Karius on his own like that at the end of the game like that, 'You'll never walk alone" my hole. Maybe if he'd racially abused an opposition player instead they would have supported him. Pathetic.

Rather certain locking arms is exactly how one could go about injuring another's arm ... but benefit of the doubt that I'm misunderstanding you here?

Massive positive for Liverpool last night was Alexander-Arnold giving Ronaldo and Marcelo absolutely nothing down the left. He'll (and Robertson) will be much better players for that game.

Yeah that was brilliant from Ramos. Classic arm-hook foul. He was trying to make it look like Salah was fouling him, not injure him. It's a classic shithouse defender tactic, specialised in by the Milan and Juventus defenders of the 90s.

The lack of dedicated shithouse defenders is why the Champions League is such a load of shit nowadays.

Ramos was probably just as likely to injure himself by linking arms and going to the floor. It was unfortunate for Salah but it was great, dirty defending - nothing more sinister than that.

Am I the only one that was shocked about the lack of fuss over the first goal? It turns out it was a legitimate goal, but more or less on a technicality (you can't block a goalkeeper kicking it from his hands but you can block a throw, what is that shit?) and I completely assumed it would be disallowed. As I say it turns out the ref was right, but no one really questioned it, on the pitch or on social media. Thought that was really odd. Maybe everyone knows the rules better than me, I'd never heard of that differentiation between kicking and throwing before.

What's the source for that? It sounds unrealistic, the only rule I know of relates to interfering with the goalie releasing the ball from their hands, nothing about how they do it.

I thought it wasn't given as a foul because Benzema doesn't try to block until Karius has released it. It's one of those rules that's really open to the referee's interpretation, and intention is everything.

Karius basically rolls it into Benzema. If that's not allowed then how far away is Benzema supposed to be?

This is just my POV but I would have said that there is a difference between blocking the ball at source and just intercepting it, and I'd have said the incident yesterday was blocking it at source. Again I'm not saying the officials got it wrong because seemingly they got it right (Alex - the referee pundit on BT cited that rule, unless I heard wrong), just that I was surprised at the lack of controversy because to me it seemed no different to when players get booked for impeding goalkeeper's kicked clearances, and I would be surprised if many people knew this law that applies to kicks but not throws.

If you call that "blocking the ball at source", then where's the line between that and "just intercepting it"?
The way I see it is, you shouldn't be allowed to interfere with what the keeper's doing until he releases the ball. If the keeper's going to throw the ball in the air to kick it, the ball isn't released until he's actually kicked it. Karius wasn't looking to kick it. He was simply going to throw or roll the ball out. The ball IMO is released the moment it leaves his hands providing there being no attempt to follow up with a kick.
I don't even know if I'm 100% right on that. That's just how I assumed the rule worked.

Well it's all about interpretation isn't it. I don't have an answer for where the line should be, but for example if Benzema intercepts the ball an inch after it leaves the goalkeepers gloves it would presumably be a foul and a booking. I would say yesterday was closer to that sort of thing than someone intercepting the ball 10 yards away. Especially as he moved to intercept it.

From what we saw yesterday it seems like if a goalkeeper goes to throw it and the striker blocks it the moment it leaves his hand, that's fine. Which I was not aware of, and surprises me given the law on blocking kicks. I'm not sure why that differentiation exists.

Benzema would only be committing a foul if he tries to take the ball off the keeper while its in his possession and not "in play". If the keeper throws the ball in the air to kick it, it's still in the keeper's possession until his foot makes contact with the ball and releases it. If the keeper is just simply throwing the ball, its no longer in his possession as soon as he throws it. Assuming what I said is in fact the rule, its pretty clear cut and shouldn't cause confusion. Which would explain why we're probably the only two people in the world that are discussing this.

I accept all that, but then haven't we all seen examples of strikers 'blocking' kicks (after they've kicked it) and it being given as a foul and a yellow? Countless times? Have all those referees been getting the rule wrong?

Personally I've never seen that happen. Every single time I saw it, it was when the keeper threw up the ball to kick it, and the attacking player would intercept before the kick. Which is why I assumed that to be the rule.

I've personally never seen someone intercept AFTER the kick and commit a foul. If that was a foul, I don't get why players still continue to try intercepting the keeper that way or pressuring the keeper when he has the ball. If you can't do it before the kick, or just after the kick, and there's no established window of opportunity where you can do it, all you'd be doing is trying to get yourself booked for no reason. Yet players still continue to pressure the keeper.

Callum Wilson used to do it all the time. Always realise obvious that the one time it went his way it would be a foul. Then that goal got disallowed against Cardiff.

Robertson my Liverpool player of the year. Our whole back 4 was solid last night, Mane was excellent but rest of midfield and Bobby didn’t turn up. Sick of our players not turning up in finals now.

But yes love both TAA & AR.
