Have an HP laptop. Every now and then the mousepad inexplicably stops working. Doesn't move at all. I know it's not because it's turned off, it just decides, "Hey, I'm tired and don't feel like moving around right now."
Needless to say it's driving me bonkers. Any tips? Should I smash it with a hammer? Will that teach it a lesson? I have a hammer next to me right now.

I guess it would be working out if it's hardware or software. A lot of problems end up being common to that particular model. Try googling your model number specifically.
Whatever it's the same thing.
I was on the HP support forums and it seems common and the people supposed to answer questions give one suggestion and then fuck off when people say it didn't help.
Are you 100% sure it's not that? It's a common issue with HP laptops that people accidentally switch it off because for some reason HP thought it would be a good idea to have touching the pad itself be the way you turn it off. If it's not the trackpad accidentally being disabled, then it might be a driver issue. Googling your model number like Rogerer mentioned would be a good idea.
1000% sure it's not that because it bewildered me when that first happened so I know all about it.
I'll Google it. It probably is a random driver issue. My GF has the same issue and has the same laptop.
Most if the time it starts working again by itself after a few minutes, but sometimes it doesn't and I want to smash it with a hammer.

Only if it's a left-handed hammer. If it's going in and out my guess is there's a driver or some kind of software suite responsible for it that is crashing and Windows can sometimes restart it. Happens all the friggin' time with printers, which has been the case since about 1998.

Hard Reset:
Sometimes all you need to do is kick the computer. This method works for a variety of connection and ‘stuck’, hung, and stubborn program issues.
Disconnect all external devices first.
Remove AC power and the battery
Press and hold power button for at least 30 seconds
Reinstall only AC power for first startup ** See Note
Power on - Log in
Next time you shut down the system, reinstall battery.
** Note: You can ignore the bit about leaving the battery out. If you like, reinstall battery the first time and be done with it.

Get a USB mouse. I got a wireless one today from Walmart for $10.
Despite people using laptops constantly they are not meant to be used as often as PC, they are a portable device to be used now and then. Most people never turn their laptop off and shut the lid to "turn it off". Shit goes wrong on them for most of these reasons.
As most people have said - use a USB mouse, no idea why you'd choose to use the pad anyway.
Do they make a grease resistant USB mouse? If so I will get judas one.
