Oregon Trail made it that high on my list because of it's prevelance in Americana. Everyone has played it at some point in their lives and as gaming eve loved so to did the game. Also a nod to it's educational value.

Funny story I went to a wedding with a few friends last year. One of the guys went around the whole night telling everyone he taught second grade in Washington. He constantly brought up that they had just finished a unit on westward expansion and played Oregon Trail. Everyone ate it up.

I love Oregon Trail so much. Bought a copy at the Goodwill last year for $2 and played through it like mad.

Sorry I never got a list in, but I think I prefer reading these things not having voted myself. Seeing what comes up as blind as I think about where I would have placed things grabs me more. Best worst excuse ever.

That said, cases in point, Res Evil 4 and WOW would have both made my top 5 and here they garnered only three points each.

I had WoW on mine. Much fun in high school at LAN parties and the like.

A lot of my friends talked up Blades of Steel on NES but to me the hockey game on NES was Ice Hockey. The strategy of how many fat, skinny and medium guys to have was great. I also liked the international aspect of it being countries.

I've heard of Oregan trail but never played it.

Persona 4 is mine, it sneaked onto my list after making about six months of commutes bearable.

I can't remember if WoW made my list, it must have gotten shuffled off, which is quite crazy because it was really big in my life for a few months.

I don't know if any of you caught this, but the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_msdos_games) have put up a load (over 2000) DOS games to play in your browser - including The Oregon Trail.

I never did it because I thought fuck paying 8 quid a month (or whatever it was to play) I remember playing it in around 2004 at my sisters house one summer.

Then I remember coming back early to uni one Christmas and I "caught" one of my manly football team playing housemates playing it and he had spent several weeks on it and was deeply ashamed. That's when I decided to download it again. But once again after getting to level 20 I decided I couldn't be arsed and thank God that was only a trial because I'd have carried on and got addicted.

I forget what my point is.

It was about 8 quid a month but you inevitably play it for about 200 hours a month and nothing else matters anymore so it's alright I suppose.

I've never even got close to the end game content and yet adore the game. It's such a well fleshed out world and enjoyable experience.

Everything about it is great apart from the fact it requires no skill at all to play. You press the attack button and find stuff.

I was doing end game content when 60 was the level cap... before Naxxramas existed and Blackwing Lair was as tough as it got. Then I got a job with regular shifts in the 12 hours from 7am to 7pm when my previous job was usually 2pm-10pm and suddenly I couldn't raid and the game lost it's appeal. Playing solo wasn't as interesting as getting up and raiding for 5 hours with a bunch of people in the US.

For the first 20 levels, yes. But start doing group content and it's far from that.

When you think about it though, all games are shit easy because it's just about pressing a button or sequence of buttons.

level 20 is just getting started. You should have seen the button set up I had for my warrior. There was about 20 buttons.

The game starts really slowly because it wants to attract non gamers. The challenge comes in the bigger fights where you have a lot of factors to manage. Outside of it, the general fights are low pressure. That's part of why it's so big.

I played a healer. In reality, probably only about 5-6 buttons I pressed on raids but it was more the 39 people I had to keep track of that was the hard bit about the game.

I was playing it flat out for a week every day all day and got to level 20. If that's the amount of time it took to get to something better then I don't rank that as a good game.

So you much prefer newer games like Destiny where instead of having a gradual build up in content and skill, you hit level cap in 25 hours then spend the next 20,000 hours grinding gear upgrades?

    Cool.

Knee had it at the bottom of hist list at #20. DVDA sent me 50 titles, and had Final Fantasy at #32. DVDA's vote for Final Fantasy didn't garner any points partially because the reptilian agenda got to me.

I had the Oregon Trail on my list. I thought I'd be the only one to remember it. It was my escape during grade school.

Shame on people for not playing Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen. Epic strategy game.

I also voted for Marble Madness. Simple yet challenging.

I think Duck Tales was the last game I cut from my list.

I considered Super Mario Bros but I never really end up playing it when I have a choice of the others.

Also I notice Worms mentioned there. What a fucking awful game. Great premise but genuinely so boring and time consuming. Not to mention how hard it was. Aiming of of those weapons was so hard and winning seemed to be by fluke.

Not when I can jump in a boot, fly with a cape, or put on a cat suit.

Oh, saw Time Crisis got a vote. I didn't consider it that much but upon reflection, that was usually the arcade game my friends and I would end up playing as our trips to Six Flags Great America came to a close.

Did you play any games with a friend? I get the impression that you hate all these games that were awesome when played with people... Worms was awesome with other people, less so single player.

And I was the NFL2k vote. The first thing I played on the Dreamcast. I remember playing that at my cousins and thinking how realistic it was and how my family thought there was a game on TV not realizing we were playing. What a time.

Hahaha, that feeling when you're playing a sports game and someone mistakes it for actual TV.

Worms Armageddon would most likely have made my list, pinnacle of the series for me and some of the funniest times I've had playing with friends.

Nothing else from the latest list though cones close for me. Not even SMB, which for me is incredibly important in gaming history, but overtaken by mire impressive games long, long ago.

Probably my biggest regret of never having played it and I recently gave my PS3 to a family friend as well.

I spy Shadows of the Empire there, that was a good game, and a good story from the book.

The fact Shadow of the Colossus got this low is amazing. Big shame, as in the least it belonged in the Top 20, and it still deserves more. Had this at #6. I see Atty beat me out by 1. The game is just so damn good. It's almost a perfect game. Thinking about it makes me want to go play it right now. I need to buy that.

Enjoyed Oregon Trail a lot, as well as Super Mario Bros. obviously, but I didn't vote for either as I wasn't thinking of OT and opted for other Mario titles. Both deserving, though.

More wrong than your Victor Valdes opinion. Worms was, and still is, one of the greatest multiplayer games ever made.

If you're talking about a console version, then I'd tend to agree with you, but played on PC it was brilliant. So much easier to aim weapons and switch between them. Worms Armageddon was probably the peak - I just remember being able to spend ages ninja roping around the screen.

    General Chaos? Loved it.

Cannon Fodder and Worms too. Cannot remember if I put these on my list but if not they were close.

Also, saw Road Rash mentioned. This was on my list, what a game. Nothing like trying hit someone off their bike at 130mph with a baseball bat.

Worms was tremendous fun, it's a game that is very 'gamey' in that you can blitz through a session and have a laugh and not really care much about how it works even though the underlying mechanics are actually pretty impressive.

I really liked Cannon Fodder too. Poor Jools and Jops.

I fear the game would lose so much if not for it's soundtrack, a lot more than most other games. Maybe that's a criticism.

i still play the originsl Woms expansion pack on the PC and it's still amazing. Took me years to get a hang of grenades and bazookas but once you do... once you use the wind to bend a bazooka round a corner on to some cunt's head, that's when your life becomes worth living.

My friend and I were proper nerds when we played Worms. We'd spend ages making opposing "Sky Bases" above the map using dozens of girders. We'd ninja rope all our worms up there and proceed to banana bomb each other to oblivion.

I really want to play it now.

Such a beautiful game, hitting all the right notes, and essentially turned out to be the swansong of the Final Fantasy its fans had come to know and love. At least they created one game that was basically Final Fantasy's greatest hits.

I will do two reveals this weekend, but only get myself on track. I like keeping them only to the weekdays, but I would rather do the two on the weekend than double up on week day reveals.

BTW: in the lower list there are quite a few ties.

Well I didn't play any of the #49 games originally - I had a go on Oregon Trail last night (thanks Dave) and lost three people in my first river crossing, still made it there alive
I remember the love for Cannon Fodder when it came out (and the furore over the Amiga Power cover). And I absolutely agree on the pain of losing your first troopers. All the replacements never quite left the same impression on me.
And kudos to whoever voted for Chaos. That's the multiplayer wizard game, isn't it?

One thing I find quite interesting, in retrospect, is that those "never quite the same" replacements meant so much less to me I became increasingly reckless with their lives. There's some psychology going on I suppose.

Nice to see Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego get a nod. I didn't have too much access to the game but I played it whenever possible. The game show was awesome though.

Final Fantasy IX was the last FF game I truly loved.

I never really played the games that much but my housemate hated the mini games in them so I played an absolute truckload of Blitzball. And some card game, maybe?

I'm really surprised they never went ahead and made a standalone Blitzball game, it was a pretty neat mechanic they had going and with all the assets they had, all they had to do was add more teams and maybe tweak the gameplay to make it a bit more real-time.

Is Shadow of the Colossus and Ico worth getting for a deal of £14 from Amazon?

Absolutely. Shadow of the Colossus is a great and unique game, no messing about, very memorable. Probably one of the best of all time. It doesn't play like Zelda but it has the spirit of what a modern Zelda would have been if it wasn't just copying itself forever. Just a series of very distinct boss fights. Ico was also really lauded but I never liked it anywhere near as much.

Glad to see Resi 4 still rank so high for so many. I used to work as lead writer for a Nintendo themed website during the GameCube years and that game will always hold a special place in my heart. A bit dated now in terms of play control but still a monster of a game.

Resident Evil 4 on the Wii was probably the best game on the system for me. Absolutely incredible game. Peak of the series without question.

12 may prove to be the last true Final Fantasy game in quality and game feel terns, but this is the last Final Fantasy that is, for lack of a better term, old school.

Adore this game, Vivi is also one of the moat interesting characters ever created in a game. He also happens to be my desktop.

They could have combined it with the X-2 version, which was more of a management sim (train your players up, sign/release players, choose formation and mentality). It was strangely addictive watching your shitbag team improve and take on the top teams.

Yeah Vivi was amazing, a fascinating combination of childlike innocence and philosophical insight. They never came close to a character that complex again. How would one even describe the character of Lightning, or Vanille? Vivi was on a whole other level for the series and much of gaming.

Snow is obviously the most complex and deep character in...

...Yeah, I can't even fake finish that.

FFIX was an excellent game, and feels like a very underrated one among the general masses. Quality gameplay, stunning world, graphics and story, and all around lovable characters. It's very close to FFVII in nostalgia love for me, and the only reason it didn't make my list is because I haven't played it in years and never was able to complete it. I got stuck at fighting Amarant in the Mog village and no matter what I did, couldn't get past him because I couldn't leave the town to level up or get my trance built.

I loved WCW vs. the World. Played it a ton on PS1, but missed out by a bit, would've been in my top 30 I think.

FFIX was great, I had it 13th on my list. I have great memories of playing it at uni while listening to Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and At the drive in.

I feel left out of some of these discussions because I have never owned a Nintendo.

Play on the emulators man at the very least. You've missed out on so so so so so so so so so so many games.

I was playing Mario Kart just last week. Still kicking ass at it.

I feel like there needs to be more Lufia 2 awareness when it comes to RPGs. It came out for the Super Nintendo in 1996 so a lot of people missed it. But it's still one of the greatest RPGs ever. Though I'd also recommend the first one, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom.

Dynasty Warriors 7? I had no idea they carried on churning that out.

I loved 3 and 4, I looked for them recently on PSN but they aren't on there

And Quake II was fantastic, I wasn't really old enough to play it enough and appreciate it.
