    Better Call Saul

Premieres February 8th, 2015. Who's pumped? I think this show will be good even though spin offs can be iffy. Bob Odenkirk and the character of Saul Goodman are good enough to carry a show and the set up could be such that there's an overarching story each season but also client-of-the-week type episodes where he's on an interesting one-off case getting involved with scumbags. All it needs is some solid writing to succeed.

The fact that they brought back Mike is tremendous. I am a bit skeptical as I am worried that they will fall victim to sky high expectations, but hopefully they get a good run in and the show can capture a little of the Breaking Bad magic while developing it's own identity.

I've seen very little Breaking Bad but I've loved Bob for years going back before Mr. Show. So I'm super glad for him and I do plan on watching the show and eventually getting around to watching BB as well.

The Skater Bros should be the new Skinny Pete and Badger. I am loving everything about it, especially starting him at the bottom.

    I thought it was great.

Do I need to have watched Breaking Bad to follow this, because I haven't (I know, I know, I will).

Other than making the first 5 minutes make more sense nothing so far makes it necessary to have seen Breaking Bad. I don't know about tomorrow's episode.

I thought it was a really great premiere. It had a very dramatic tone (there was little comedy, though I imagine it will lighten up to some extent after we get into the groove of things) and you could tell the quality will rival that of Breaking Bad in terms of production and writing which is not surprising since they retained so much of the same staff. Saul's origin story has been compelling so far and I think they nailed his struggles to make ends meet while defending scum bags and the stuff with his brother and his brother's law firm was great and I'm looking forward to seeing how that aspect plays out. If I could nitpick the ending for a second, though....

Well the ending made it more of a holy shit moment if you watched Breaking bad. If not, you didn't know who that guy was at the end.

Was the beginning of the episode supposed to be a fast forward of where Saul ends up down the road? I was a bit confused. If my assessment is correct then I have no idea why that scene was even necessary. Other than that I really enjoyed the episode. Tuco FTW!!!

It was... I guess to give you closure on how Saul ended up.

Or, to show you how far he'll eventually fall.

That's what I thought. Why not just let that play out through the series? It almost makes me disinterested. Maybe I like a good underdog story, but seeing that he ends up with such a shitty and depressing life was a turn off. IDK

Have you not seen Breaking Bad? That scene was specifically to show you what happened to his character after that show ended. As I'm sure you're aware, Better Call Saul is a prequel to BB. If you saw BB, you know why he ended up in that position.

Yea Saul's fate at the ending of Breaking Bad was that he went into hiding due to his affiliations and illegal dealings with Walter White, I believe they even said specifically that he was going to a Cinnabon in Omaha. The point of the opening scene was that this is his sad state after Breaking Bad, and then with Better Caul Saul we hop back to the beginning of his story. It isn't unnecessary to show that since it ties his beginning to his end, and also, we will probably get more of Omaha Saul at some point and we will see what comes of him. I anticipate some sort of redemption for him. The producers have said flash forwards/present-day stuff will factor into the story telling

Working at a Cinnabon in Omaha, living a hollow, boring life is the consequence of him deciding to become a crooked lawyer

Yeah not gonna lie, It's been so long since I watched BB that I forgot how the show left Saul.

Fro thanks for the post and jogging my memory. It all makes sense now.

I have such a shitty memory. By the time I watch a new season of any series I've already forgotten the majority of what happened the previous season.....Don't even get me started on movie sequels.

I got a feeling that we will see the real fate of Saul in the future more than what we saw last night. My wife who had a rough idea about BB liked Saul more so than Dead this week which she has decided has gotten to a gore point of no return. She also pointed out that the pacemaker was the reason for the the no electric in the house. His Dad is really fucking naive.

I missed this last night, but they're showing it again before the new episode tonight. This looks better than anything on Raw which isn't really saying much these days.

I do have one issue right now. At the end of Breaking Bad I thought it was great that Saul would end up slumming it in a mall in Omaha. Two episodes in and I already want a much better fate for the guy.

Interesting seeing the guy from Orphan Black on here.

I know no one else watches that show.

    It was another good episode.

Hopefully he'll get a better life by the end of the show. Bob Odenkirk plays this character with so much heart that it's hard not to like him.

I have not watched Ep2 from last night yet, but I felt that so many callbacks in the first episode actually got in the way of making this its own series. Obviously it is going to have tie-ins, but hopefully it creates its own identity without relying all the viewers all having the BrBa knowledge.

I'm glad you like it and it will be interesting to see your unique perspective on it. With that said, GO WATCH BREAKING BAD YOU MONG. Not because you need to watch BB before watching this, just because it's a fucking amazing show.

I'm with Judas. I've never seen a whole episode of BB ever. But I fucking love Bob Odenkirk so this show has been on my most anticipated list. Two episodes in and I fucking love it. Granted my gf is sitting right beside me the whole time explaining things from BB to me.

I am actually going to tell Judas not to see Breaking Bad. I want to run a social experiment to see if someone who has never seen Breaking Bad watches all of Saul and sees if they come to a different conclusion on Breaking Bad. Other than that, the second episode was just as good as the first.

Why not just have him watch the entire series on mute?

He meant conclusions as in opinions from viewers on the show, not the conclusion/ending of the show. Though I still don't know what he wants to be 'different' about it.

Anyway, seems like this is on UK Netflix now. How did a TV channel not pick it up?

No idea what this social experiment business is, but I'm opting in. Breaking Bad spoilers are hereby UNWELCOME.

I missed the last two episodes and just caught up on them and I fucking love this show so much.

    Saul Good, man.

Jimmy taking the money and spinning the bogus story, getting Nacho off, thus saving his own ass (or did he? Nacho still isn't pleased) then proceeding to buy the same exact designer suit and putting up the billboard that he clearly can't, but then spinning THAT into a bogus stunt for publicity was fucking great.

Why? The guy has been in the right all season long. Yeah, it was a dick move to ask for him not to use his own name, but it was more a request than an order, and Jimmy has acted like a child about it.

Banks did work in that episode. I adore Mike, and this episode was astounding. I can't believe how good this show is. It really gives some depth to Mike's character. I'll end up eventually rewatching Breaking Bad and have a new view of these characters that I watched originally. It's so great. "I broke my boy" destroyed me. It's nice to see that the show will revolve around exploring other characters besides Jimmy.

Yea.... that latest episode was immense and what a spin off this is. It's blown my expectations away. They smartly killed any of the early talk that this would be 75% comedy 25% drama and basically stuck with the exact same mix that Breaking Bad had. And it's wonderful.

I love it too. The early Tuco appearance had me scared they were going to make it over the top and try to Breaking-Bad the shit out of it but its settled into a really grounded and wonderful first season. Elder law and a retirement homes overcharging for household items as part of a fraud scam isn't exactly super exciting but it works great because we've got this captivating starring character to lead us through it as he tries to find success for himself. Chuck's arc is picking up nicely now too and of course Mike is just the man. I expect this case wil be stolen from Jimmy by Chuck's firm, sadly, and maybe that will lead to the creation of Saul.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. Having it billed to Chuck means he's not out and still technically working at HMM, despite Jimmy spending months of stonewalling to get him cashed out. That could ruin things long term, if this case flops or is stolen, and I'm not sure if that's why Kim was apprehensive. Jimmy then changes his name/embraces Saul out of spite. This show is great. It's been good.

My belief is Hamiln, Hamilin and McGill will eventually be nuked. I don't like Kim betraying Jimmy this early in the run, but it could lead to him becoming Saul a bit quicker. I have loved every episode so far. I also get very nervous for this show and then at the end, I feel fine. Its freaking weird. I do like how they made Jimmy this weird hero that eventually be a key part of a giant evil empire.

Don't have much to add other than I agree with all of the positive praise this show has received. It is extremely creative, smart, and keeps you glued to the television.

I was getting genuinely mad at the fat bitch at Sandpiper Crossing who had the guards restrain Jimmy while they shredded documents.

That ending left me heartbroken. I knew it was going to happen like that, but man seeing it like that... I feel so bad for Saul. At the same time we can feel Chuck's conflict - but in the end it's just too big of a disappointment for Jimmy that his brother can't see past his flaws. Mike's arc has enough material for another spinoff - the scene where he dissected the concept of being a criminal was brilliant. Which, btw Nacho doing work not for his boss is probably going to show back up in season 2.

The entire scene with Mike waiting in the parking lot was absolutely fantastic. I could watch an hour long show of Mike talking to people in parking lots, really.

The Emmy council is going to have a hard time picking who is the best supporting actor on this show Mike or Chuck. Jimmy and Kim have to be locks to get nominated as well as the show.

All 3 characters pretty closely resemble their voice actors. I think part of it had to do with the technology they used to capture their performances, which may've been the same as what put Ken Cosgrove's (Aaron Stanton) face into LA Noire along with his voice.

And to keep this relevant I think I'll binge watch the first season to get caught up in time for the finale based on the strength of praise from you guys.

It was way more heart-wrenching than I anticipated. He really piled in with the slippin' Jimmy stuff.

First season of better call Saul was better than the first season of breaking bad. Simple as that.

I loved season 1 of Better Call Saul but I would disagree with you. Season 1 of Breaking Bad was cut short due to the writers strike so it didn't quite have a proper finale but it was still excellent.

As for last night's finale, I enjoyed it, and it looks like Jimmy will be in Saul mode beginning in season 2 having turned down what would have been a lucrative and promising offer from that other law firm, now rid of his brother as a moral compass and ready to combine his Slippin Jimmy mindset with his law degree. This season was sort of the Jimmy McGill backstory season and I thought it was very well done.

I enjoyed season 1 of Breaking Bad A LOT, but it was pretty slow and a bit all over the place, to my mind Breaking Bad didnt properly find its flow until season 3, oddly enough with the introduction of Saul Goodman.

Loved the season, but this was one of the weaker episodes, the bar scenes were overbaked for me. Loved the Kevin Costner bit, and now I know what not to rent if I ever need a car in Chicago.

Can hardly wait until the next season kicks off. I'd prefer it now if they just skip ahead and start fresh with season 2 taking place after Breaking Bad. They opened the season with that as a framing device, but they didn't end it. What was the point? There was no pay off. How many movies and shows do you see where the anti-hero builds an empire and goes down in a blaze of glory? A lot. But what's rarely told is such a guy who instead gets a second chance to reclaim it all. That's the story I really want to see.

they can always get to this in a future season. This show does have a lot of legs in my opinion

what i really liked was the sort of turn around with howard. he's been portrayed as such a dick (and to be fair probably still is to some extent) but so much of saul's disdain toward him was because he thought howard thought he was below him and being bitter about being denied a job, and when we see that it was chuck you can see howard being presented in a somewhat more sympathetic light. this was especially well done during their meeting where howard says he always liked jimmy pointing out how he called him 'charlie hustle.' saul obviously always thought that howard was being condescending, backed up by howard not letting him join the firm, but knowing that it was chuck behind that saul sees that what he thought was a condescending act was actually sincere. really well done. liked the rest of the episode too, nice change of pace somewhat.

The end was a bit of a mess. Eventually, he has to come into some money. He could have taken that job and then got fired via Chuck or due to himself or outside forces. Jimmy talking to Mike at the end was a bit odd as well. Mike tells him, "Hey, I had a job to do it and I did it." Jimmy takes it as a fuck the world for some reason. It will be fun to see how far down the rabbit hole they go next season with him.

yeah the finale felt really weird to me. The hustling in Chicago vignette, although I appreciate the sort of homage to that type of cinema it was, felt out of place. The music in this episode felt a bit soap operatic as well, with some cliffhanger/tension scenes culminating in one of those "OMG He's really Brent's evil twin sister in disguise!" sort of strings pieces. And the 'turn' towards the end...mmmm to me not entirely believable. Maybe it's because Odenkirk's acting can be SLIGHTLY wooden at times, but I just didn't buy the total fall from grace. I enjoyed the episode on the whole, but the stuff with Marco really didn't strike a chord with me emotionally. Ultimately, what leads Jimmy to become Saul is for him to succeed on his own merits. I get that, all along, he was doing it so Chuck would be proud of him and for some family redemption, and with that gone he's jacked it all in, but he's due a windfall, was going to be working on something he's passionate about, have an office, partnership and a definite IN with Kim - the character was painted so sympathetically throughout the previous 9 episodes as to incline one to believe that the journey for Jimmy was as much one of personal redemption and self respect. I dunno, I guess I don't really like his reasons for becoming Saul and it kind of detracts a lot of my sympathy for the character.

What an amazing season of television though, just first class. Tonally pretty perfect, awesome to be back in the same setting and really well written for the most part. Some of the dialogue I found a bit hokey and convenient at times and I think the casting of Kim was questionable. I loved Howard. I mean, for the most part I hated the character, but that's the path you were lead down and he played it so, so well that when he 'face turned' at the end, it was so smoothe and not out of character at all, because it basically wasn't.

Star of the series so far for me was Chuck though. That was just brilliantly played.

I think Jimmy was looking for Mike to essentially talk him into 'fuck the world' and Mike was having none of it, so the implication is when Jimmy decides to go that route anyway, it's on him. It's his choice now. Slipping Jimmy slipped again.

I think 'mess' is strong but I can't really argue that there's a bit of weirdness there, for pretty much the reasons you and Fanny brought up. I enjoyed the episode but it seems like it was a really sudden and awkward way to slam Jimmy back down after building him up so high. It feels like something's missing, like they just needed one more episode.

I was just about to come in here and comment on that, so glad you all agree.

The ending was just jarring for me - the jump from trying to be the moral guy to accepting that he should just be out for himself happened so quickly.
