I never knew he was actually signed w/ WWE at one point. I always figured his latest tryout was his first tryout. Huh.

He's definitely honed in on his skill though and he's as big as a house now.

    HOODSLAM - Fanarchy Rules

Felt good being back on highlights this month. I don't think I've ever had such a hard time cramming this much content onto a highlight video. So much happened and so much couldn't be included. But damn... this was probably my favorite Hoodslam show since December. Hoodslam just moved to a new venue and it couldn't have turned out better.

Hes blacklisted from the company for pissing dirty and then openly admitting that he was using HORSE STEROIDS in FCW.

There's a few other funny moments in that interview. Like, did you know that when he called back WWE to find out he'd been released he thought he was getting a raise? That is a thing that happened.

You do great work. Do you set up the lighting or is that Hoodslam and you take advantage of it? The lighting is almost always great.

Thx Judas. That's all their lighting, which has been really great. Everything around the ring is pitch black, but they've got more than enough lights pouring it on into the ring.

Last night was BLOODSLAM... and it ranks in my top 5 shows of all time. And this happened.

I don't think I'd ever been so nervous about getting a shot. I could see the spot coming, but nothing really registered until he was up top. I was hoping to high heaven that I wasn't too close and that I wouldn't screw up the shot. It was murder getting through the crowd, and I was barely able to get my footing w/ all the people trying to gather around. Had to shrug of the dudes at my back before the dive.

Being in the middle of this had my heart pumping like crazy. I love my job.

First Hoodslam back after 2 months and it was a doozy. 12 full months w/ these guys, and it's really what I needed.

Finished the highlights for Hoodfighter 2015. After a month of hell, I wanted to put more effort and detail into things and decided to make is more... VHS-like.

Highlight reel from new years. Took a long time to get to finishing this, but I couldn't be more happy w/ the results. Took more time to color grade it and I think I've found the perfect palette for Hoodslam.

A highlight from last night's Hoodslam. Brittany Wonder squared off against friggin' Shelly Martinez! They brawled outside and it was madness, just pure madness.

Friday was Hoodslam: Get Your Ass to March... and Brian Cage went up against Chupacabra. Only it was PREDATOR-cabra. Guy made it from scratch and it looked phenomenal.

    Here's a highlight w/ the outside brawl.

I asked that question when I started working w/ them. Apparently there was a bad lip reading video somewhere of Ahmed Johnson saying something and the caption was "birds will fall." So it's just an inside joke pretty much.

Seems like hoodslam.com would be a more sensible choice but I get the feeling Hoodslam's not really not for sensibility.

The last month has been a real grind, but in a good way. I worked a show in Vegas 2 weeks ago and am heading of to Los Angeles tomorrow to do Luchador highlights. Here are the latest Hoodslam highlights from Entertania earlier this month. If I have any hope of expanding and getting my name out there, then I need to delve outside the Bay Area.

Going to be a fun rest of the year.

This whole week was one I'll never forget. Had driven down to Los Angeles to shoot my first luchador show and it was a lot of fun. Being so used to typical wrestling shows, it took me a little bit to get used to their movements. Always running, always arm dragging, always head scissoring... it never stopped for a second. Being in that kind of world after working shows in the Bay Area for so long was very cool. Got to network w/ other shooters and photographers down there so hopefully I'll be headed back down there in the near future.

Hoodslam was last night, and I may have caught some of my favorite wrestling shots. But I'll get back to that in a second. At 3am yesterday morning I met w/ AJ Kirsch (Tough Enough / Hoodslam host) and finally got some of the main shots I need for the Hoodslam commercial. The focus is going to be quick glimpses of these guys in their normal, every day life as they prepare for Hoodslam. And also... the entire city of Oakland. Hoodslam has become so synonymous w/ this city that the people need to see it meshed in w/ the norm. How do the wrestlers prepare for the show? How do they get around during the normal work day? Here are some quick shots from the shoot yesterday morning.

Then that night was the show and it was a tough one, most I blame on myself because I hadn't eaten much. It was right before the main event I started to feel really dizzy. Then things literally got fuzzy and I was unable to hold my camera steady. Had been sweating buckets all night too and it wasn't like things were going to cool down anytime soon so that's when I knew I had to find a place to sit and get some water immediately. Couple minutes later though I felt like I was coming back and decided to shoot the rest of the main event from another spot, one that was closer to the exit. Here are some gifs...

Here is a sizzle reel from a show down in LA... La Bulla. Brian Kendrick worked the main event so it was nice seeing a familiar face.

The folks seem like they want to have me back for more shows so fingers crossed it gets my name out there more.

Some highly under-edited footage from Friday's APW main event. MVP was involved and it was awesome shooting him.

This was just chaos. Outside brawls were expected, but not outside the barricades. Kratos throwing MVP into the guard rail and almost knocking over the lights was pretty scary; the production manager was going apeshit off camera. Luckily, I was nearest to the MVP/Kratos brawl otherwise I would have followed the other two wrestlers (War Pig/Drake). One big issue was definitely the lights not coming on. I was shooting in near total dark so I had to adjust my cameras settings very carefully. And since the wrestlers were taking free reign through the entire gym, it was immensely difficult picking up where the guys were heading... all the while avoiding the fans. It was like being at Hoodslam, only without the beer

Just got word that Shotzi Blackheart may be trying out for WWE! She didn't make Tough Enough, but that was a very good thing IMO. Having somebody from Hoodslam make it would be immensely awesome.

Hoodslam held their second show in Reno last night, and a lot of us didn't make it on account of some very unpredictable weather. But luckily, the snow died down and we made it. Most of everything went off without a hitch though; a female fan threw her entire beer into a wrestlers face, and some drunk schmuck was kicked out after he slapped a female wrestler on the ass. People suck sometimes. I'd never been to Reno before and while I wouldn't call it my kind of town... the show itself was fantastic. I was needed back home this morning so once the show was over I pretty much hugged all the wrestlers, packed my things, and split. Got home at about 3am, but wasn't tired so I worked on highlights. I really liked some of the shots; one in particular though might be my favorite shot. The lighting, the pose, the perspective... I think this will be frame worthy.

Here are only a few quick highlights from last night:

I'm particularly proud the guy in the skull mask (Chris). He stood mext to me at Hoodslam shows saying he was training to be a wrestler and his goal was to get his shit together and wrestle for Hoodslam. So he's been training his ass off w/ the Stoner Bros. here in Oakland... and here he is.

Another Hoodslam show last night, and I Pro Wrestling Revolution later on tonight. It's going to be pretty cool shooting 2 nights of wrestling this weekend for 2 different promotions. I decided to stay out of the crowd last night and see what I could get from the hard cam's spot. I doubt I'll be ably to produce a sizzle reel, but I did get some pretty cool shots. Here's Shotzi (recent WWE tryout) doing her thing

Spoiler'd for size. This should give a pretty good idea of what a Hoodslam crowd looks like.

Last night's PWR (Pro Wrestling Revolution) was awesome. Had some of my favorite female wrestlers in the same ring at the same time like Nicole Savoy... Brittany Wonder... Thunder Rosa (Kobra Moon)... Christina Von Eerie... and Holidead. One of my first wrestling gigs had Nicole Savoy vs. Brittany Wonder and they squared off once again last night which was cool. Shooting them suplex each other gave me flashbacks of a couple years ago when I was just starting out. Now look at them.

This weekend I realized how much wrestling has become part of my professional life. It's been a busy past few months, trying to widen my sights and broaden my horizons... and it feels like things are beginning to pay off. Producing content for Hoodslam has gotten me in a lot of doors and now that I'm traveling to LA more often and have created ties with shows in San Francisco, there is a chance I could be working with Shimmer in the coming months. They say they like what they see and may be looking into bringing me to Chicago. It's a good thing to still feel nervous/excited going into a shoot, but after thinking about it some more... I had to just say Chicago out loud. I've only traveled as far as Los Angeles for a shoot, and just the thought of traveling across most of the country gives me goosebumps. Things are definitely building up. Having ties and contacts outside of California will hopefully be enough to get LU or (fuck it) WWE to notice me. I get that I'm just a speck, but I want to produce wrestling content that stands out among the rest.

Here's the sizzle reel for the PWR show:

Thunder Rosa/Kobra Moon is featured, and it makes me wish even more LU would just drop the Kobra Moon persona and let her be Thunder Rosa. Also, Nicole Savoy (the purple/white girl) would be a perfect fit in NXT. She's come a long way since I started shooting wrestling, and I hope they give her another chance. If she's booked, she'll put on the best match. Easily.

I hope WWE notice you. I also hope they notice that you don't quickly zoom in and out of every fucking mat impact move and that it looks preferable.

    Congrats VHS, and good luck

That's something I've become very tired of in today's WWE product (other shows like TNA do it as well). They feel like they have to whip, jolt, and zoom at every sign of action. It's meant to accentuate the impact, but IMO it hinders the matches. When you have something quick happening and the cameraman is bouncing the camera like he's on a speedboat, it hides the action. It's so disorienting that it makes me want to look away from the screen sometimes. It pisses me off so much when even in the replays you can't get a full idea of the move that just happened because the cameramen won't stand still.

And as for closeups, I feel they're best used for times when something needs to be heavily stressed. Like a grimace or an embrace, stuff like that.

And this Friday... for the first time, I'm going to be shooting two wrestling events in one day. Mid-day I'll be shooting APW (in the fucking Palace of Fine Arts!!!) and later that evening I'll be driving up to Petaluma for Revolution. I had to buy a couple more camera batteries and chargers just to be totally certain I'll have enough power for the entire day. I'll be crossing my fingers to high heaven that my camera is alright and can make it through all that.

As angry as I was, I was still thinking if I did hit him... it would have possibly disrupted the show or I would have gotten my ass kicked. 3 against 1 ain't good odds.

What a weekend. Three wrestling shows in two days and I'm so depleted that I could barely get out of bed this morning. I've got ice on both knees and nealy 500GB of footage to go through. It's all fucking worth it though. Here are some video stills...

Blue Demon! It was awesome seeing him in person, just not giving a fuck.

El Heredero Rey Mysterio got busted open within the first minute of his match, and he was gushing. After taking a punch, he whipped his head around... spraying me w/ blood. I looked in a bad way when this one was over.

Mr. Cisco! This shot here means a lot to me. I couldn't take my eyes off the LU shoulder guard. I'm going to make it there some day.

    Lince Dorado (WWE CWC).

Timothy Thatcher has always been one of my favorites to shoot. He would be such a hit over at NXT. I hope this guy goes far.

This here was my first ever post-match interview... and my first blindside attack! It took me a second to realize that Cuevas (guy on the left) was about to get Pearl Harbor'd so I had to make it a closeup shot.

This was a weekend I'll never forget. The world is going bananas and I'm grateful to have pro wrestling.

I'm going to be traveling to San Diego next weekend for Comic Con! I'll be shooting shooting highlights for FCW where they'll be featuring Pentagon Jr., Fenix, Cage, Jeff Cobb/Matanza... and Melissa Santos.

Any Rajah folks in the SD are next weekend let me know!

    Revolution highlights!

I head to San Diego in two days for Comic Con, and I can barely sit still. Pentagon Jr. within my frame? Fuck yeah! While I'm anxious... no... FEAR!

This was a weekend I'll never forget. Having set my sights on LU, San Diego proved to be one of the most thrilling gigs I've ever done. This must be the stepping stone that I've been looking for. It simply must.

Pentagon Jr. and Fenix... truly two of the greatest performers today. I've never had to focus so hard to keep somebody in frame like I had to w/ Fenix. This guy is fast... impossibly fast. There were times where I would actually lose sight of him only to realize that he was already in the air. And Pentagon... all I can say is he's a genuine star.

Also busted out the GoPro for their match against Cholo and B-Boy!

Highlights from SD Comic Con weekend. Took me 3 drafts, but it's done!

Also, during Pentagon's match... Fenix was about to do a top rope spot and I needed to get into position. I inadvertently scuffed passed Pentagon and locked eyes with death itself. Fuck me. I moved into position and caught him still lookin' at me, right fucking at me. Luckily, my boy snapped a shot of it. Scary/good times.

Zero fear my ass, I flew way too close to the sun right there.

    Thats a mean look.

But as we now know, it only takes one stiff shot to the back with a baseball bat to put him down.

    Latest highlights from Revolution.

My efforts to shoot highlights in Mexico for The Crash have turned up nil, but... there's still 4 days until the event. If I get the ok, then I'm going to Tijuana. If not, then I'm going to drink. A lot.

It was a goal of mine to shoot for The Crash in Tijuana, Mexico, and last Saturday I finally achieved that goal. Words cannot describe the honor it was to work alongside such a tremendously talented crew, capturing moments created by the best luchadors in the world. Alberto (El Patron)... Fenix... Mascara Dorada... and more. The fans were awesome as well with nearly 5000 in attendance.

I've only begun working on the highlight reel, but here's a quick preview.

Also, Dorada's (Gran Metalik) farewell to TJ was a tear jerker as he'll be heading to WWE on a full time basis now.

I can't wait to go back.

The Crash highlight reel is done, and the bosses have expressed great interest in having me shoot for them regularly. This journey is taking me far, and I hope to go even further. There's talk of bringing in Mysterio and Jeff Hardy next month. If only I could FF to November.

It's been a good month with a couple fun shoots, but also a small bit of disappointments. I missed an opportunity to shoot a LU live event, and that's really had me down lately. It's certain situations like this where I get really down because I depended on someone to speak on my behalf and things didn't work out. I learn, I move on, and then I learn some more. There will be more opportunities.

This last show was an especially memorable one because I had the immense honor of shooting Cody Rhodes, who was traveling with Colt Cabana! I only had him for literally a minute before his match, but was still able to get the shots he needed. Here is the final piece:

Mexico is done and I couldn't be happier w/ how things turned out. Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio were in the main event, which was like nothing I've ever experienced. I'll never forget it.

So now that 2016 is practically over, this is where I start setting new goals for the next year. This year was all about getting noticed, and I feel like I've done a good enough job as far as producing content in the right places and also broadening my portfolio. I just need to compile a wrestling reel... and hope it's enough to take me where I'm trying to go. I hope... I goddamn hope.

Thank you all for tolerating this little journal of mine, and have a happy holiday season.

I'm still shooting for them, but not every month. Doing it for the last 2 years straight has really started to burn me out so it's going to be every other month or every 2-3 months.

I would say that and a couple other things. It's just a lot of work while also working on other projects. My work flow is beginning to pick up again and I'm also looking to expand my horizons in the wrestling world.

It's no secret that I've been aiming for LU for quite some time now. I've done pretty much all that I can here in the Bay Area, and feel I'm ready to be of service to them... but I'm positive I'm not alone in noticing the buzz around LU has dissipated. Why? The possibilities seemed endless only a year ago, and now it feels like something has been missing. I haven't watched yesterday's episode yet, but I did see them post a teaser for the next half of season 3 which is Summer 2017. Are you kidding me? That's in incredibly long time to wait, and I immediately knew something was very wrong.

Then I come across this article and the red flags just start to sink in. Is this show going belly up? Do I want to continue investing time trying to get into a sinking ship? When was the last time we saw a LU commercial outside of El Rey? When do we ever see Jeff Cobb wrestle as Matanza or Ricochet wrestle as Puma outside of the Temple doors? Never. Why has their merchandise been so incredibly lackluster and why haven't they teamed w/ Masked Republic yet? And why don't they tour at all? I mean they did that small setup late last year, the one that I thought I'd get to shoot, but from what I hear from close friends it turned out to be disappointing. There's been no real sign of flourishing or expansion

I certainly hope by the time the show comes back that the high-ups have gotten their shit together because if not... this could be the biggest disappointment wrestling has seen in a long time.

    http://hubpages.com/sports/LU-Promotion-of-Tomorrow

If LU is headed for extinction, then I may very well end this wrestling journey.

The past few months have been a lot of fun; had a tremendous experience shooting at the Cow Palace 2 weeks ago. Not only was I hired to do backstage portraits, but also ringside highlights. I'd never done both simultaneously so that in itself was a nice way to test everything I've learned in the last several years.

One aspect I feel I've really become comfortable with (finally) is direction. Most of the time I'm shooting things as they happen, but now that I'm diving into photography it's become more imperative that I know how to speak/direct certain performers. Cody Rhodes is definitely my favorite to photograph, and working w/ him is always a breeze. Very professional and the immensely calm when approached for shots. Here is my most recent collaboration w/ him.

Will be traveling to Atlanta next month, which will be the furthest I've traveled for a wrestling gig.

Things have been alright lately, although I've been feeling a bit down on myself for not making it to LU. It wasn't easy to realize I needed to bail on the idea of shooting for them, and so the last 2 months have been kind of a downer. However, I did get to shoot wrestling on the East Coast for the first time for Mucha Lucha, based in Georgia. It was an immense experience, meeting and reuniting w/ a lot of the LU folks. Some even looked at me like "Hey, aren't you the California guy?"

This next weekend I'll have Pentagon twice back here in the Bay Area, but I'll just be doing backstage portraits. My wrestling videography work has been lessening while my photography has been increasing... and that's not a bad thing really.

If there's one thing that I've learned, and it's taken me this long to realize it... is that wrestling doesn't go anywhere. And I mean in the sense that there is no destination. It just keeps going and going and going. Up until now, I thought things were like sports. You start in little league, you make it to high school, then college ball, then the minors, then the majors. Wrestling isn't like that. It's an ever-revolving roller coaster that will always bring the same experience to you... only every time it feels new.
