Nice card. Where is Ishii though? The one downside. Assuming he's either on tour somewhere or they're yet to add a NEVER title defence.

Looking forward to Okada/Styles, Ibushi/Taguchi and the big New Japan/Bullet Club elimination match. Three hot match ups there. Wes Brisco challenging Kojima is also nice and fresh. I'm still not really sure if Wes Brisco is even half decent but his father and uncle are pretty synonymous with the NWA title and it's better than Conway yet again. Oh and the bad ass dream team of Shinskay and Sakuraba hopefully kicking the shit out of those Gracie chumps.

Just saw the end of the Ishii tag. Honma vs. Ishii looks like it's going down. I can live with that.

Aren't NJPW running the 17k seat Yokohama Arena like 3 weeks after this show? I don't know how far in advance tickets tend be bought or what, but do they really want AJ Styles headlining that show? Also man this is one of those 4am shows. Booo.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Wasn't feel well last night so didn't stay/get up to watch it. Tried to avoid spoilers this morning but it just wasn't to be. Will watch the show later today.

God damn it's 2014, who the fuck cares about AJ Styles?

Avoided spoilers and the show was obviously more enjoyable as a result.

Is Styles any good nowadays? I always had a lot of time for him when he wasn't against Daniels, is he the same guy or has he progressed? Seems a completely random career resurgence.

Defrost should've tagged it imo. I was lucky enough to avoid it.

That said, Peter Griffin doesn't make points anymore. He just has a bizarre obsessive hatred for Defrost.

Yeah I fucked up. Shouldn't have posted that. I'm always looking to convert people to Puro and thought AJ as champ might help. Didn't give it much thought past that when I posted.

I dont hate him. I just disagree with a lot of what he says. And I make plenty of points, but apparently when I do i am being bizarre and obsessive.

    0. Captain New Japan, El Desperado, BUSHI & Mascara Dorada beat Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Tiger Mask, KUSHIDA & Yohei Komatsu (9:16) when Desperado used the Guitarra de Angel on Komatsu.
    1. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Title: Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson (c) beat Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov (9:15) when Matt pinned Romero after the More Bang For Your Buck (4th defense).
    2. Special Tag Match: Toru Yano & Takashi Iizuka beat Minoru Suzuki & Shelton Benjamin (9:02) when Suzuki was DQ’d.
    3. NWA World Heavyweight Title: Satoshi Kojima (c) beat Wes Brisco (9:25) with a lariat (3rd defense).
    4. Special Tag Match: Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata beat Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi (10:50) when Goto used a Scorpion Deathlock on Nakanishi.
    5. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Kota Ibushi (c) beat Ryusuke Taguchi (14:03) with a Phoenix splash (3rd defense).
    6. NEVER Openweight Title: Tomohiro Ishii (c) beat Tomoaki Honma (14:07) with a brainbuster (3rd defense).
    7. Special Elimination Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi, Togi Makabe, Tetsuya Naito & Jushin Thunder Liger beat Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Bad Luck Fale & Tama Tonga (15:36) when Tanahashi used the High Fly Flow on Gallows.
    8. Wrestling vs. Jiu-jitsu MMA Fight: Daniel Gracie & Rolles Gracie beat Shinsuke Nakamura & Kazushi Sakuraba (8:30) when Rolles used a sleeper hold on Sakuraba.
    9. IWGP Heavyweight Title: AJ Styles beat Kazuchika Okada (c) (24:31) with the Styles Clash to become the 60th champion.

    * The Bullet Club finally rose to the top of New Japan as new leader AJ Styles ended the epic IWGP Heavyweight Title reign of Kazuchika Okada in a major shock today. Okada had held the title for 13 months and survived 8 challenges, seemingly unstoppable, only for Styles to defeat him in his New Japan debut today! As per usual in Bullet Club matches, there was interference galore to help the man who has replaced America-bound Prince Devitt as the leader, including a hooded figure who turned out to be… CHAOS member Yujiro Takahashi!

Yujiro completed his betrayal of CHAOS and turn to the Bullet Club by dropping Okada with the Tokyo Pimps before Styles finished the champion off with a Bloody Sunday and Styles Clash to become the 60th IWGP Heavyweight Champion! Styles is also the first foreign champion since Brock Lesnar in 2005-2006. The former TNA star made an instant impact in New Japan and declared that the Bullet Club would take the other IWGP titles not already held by them. Styles’ first defense is due for May 17th against Michael Elgin in the ROH/New Japan shows in America.

    * Shibata, who with Goto defeated veteran team Nagata & Nakanishi today, challenged Tanahashi to a match after Tanahashi led New Japan to an Elimination Match victory over the Bullet Club.

    * Two titles were successfully defended back to back and the outcome could be the winners soon facing each other. Kota Ibushi overcame Ryusuke Taguchi in his V3 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title after Tomohiro Ishii had successfully defended his NEVER Openweight Title against Tomoaki Honma. After the NEVER match, Ibushi challenged Ishii and they could soon meet for the NEVER belt…

    * Satoshi Kojima continued to reign with the historic NWA World Heavyweight Title after defeating Wes Brisco, who made his first New Japan debut today. Kojima is next due to defend the title on May 30th in Millersville, TN for NWA Southern All-Star Wrestling.

    * The Young Bucks also held on to their gold today, beating former champions Forever Hooligans in the PPV opener when Matt pinned Romero.

Sort of disappointing show overall. Ishii/Honma might be my Japanese MOTY. The elimination tag was really good. The main event was boring. Post-match was cool though.

A lot of people like it but not me. I just thought it was really uninteresting. Okada's selling was bad which is surprising because it's usually one of his best traits. Opening stuff was boring and it even lacked a particularly hot finishing stretch.

Was alright. Wasn't exactly expecting fireworks though. I wouldn't expect AJ to have as good a match with Okada as Tanahashi, Goto, Ibushi, Naito etc. Partly down to his quality, partly down to his style... CLASH OF STYLES yes.

The shitty part about it is this SCREAMS of being Devitt's spot that needed replaced since Devitt left. I'm not saying that putting the belt on Devitt was the plan, necessarily, but that would have been built wonderfully and made sense. Styles just pops up in the company and gets the belt immediately, which is terribly wishy-washy. Makes no sense whatsoever.

So does Okada get the belt back before Wrestle Kingdom to set-up for a match with Nakamura, or is SHINSKAY the one to topple Bullet Club's new leader?

I don't think Styles took Devitt's spot at all. I think Styles was just a good fit as the leader of the gaijin stable once Devitt left, so he got put there. I do believe that Styles winning the belt was a recent decision only made to get a pop from American fans or people who don't normally watch NJPW. Hell, it could even have something to do with GFW down the road. It fucking sucks for Okada, though. What's he do now? I doubt AJ loses the rematch, which then leaves Okada with nothing really to do. This whole thing is just yucky.

I've been hearing about AJ winning this title since he left TNA. It is not recent at all. It is part of a plan to get to Okada vs Nakamura.

It's weird that the short term direction of the company is so sketchy going into a show in a 17k seat arena. Who can challenge Styles? Everyone is mixed up in something. Suzuki? That's not the hottest main event on the planet with him having been stuck in a comedy feud for the past several months. An Okada rematch would either mean Styles' title win was literally meaningless or it would be jobbing their top guy out 2 shows in a row. Naito? I guess they would like him to get cheered one day.

Tanahashi seems like the obvious answer there.

He seems very involved in tag title situation with Makabe involving Goto and Shibata.

This crowd was dead. The only match they remotely cared for was the Honma/Ishii match because Honma is the ultimate underdog even compared to Ishii (and it was easily the best match of the show) and then they book some Gaijin dude they don't even know in the main event. Now give AJ credit; he was able to win them over anyway (Lord knows Okada did nothing to help) but that doesn't change the fact that this is a HUGE risk by Gedo and Jado. Japan typically doesn't like outside interference in their main event matches.

Time will tell whether this is a good decision or not, but for me, definite thumbs down.

New Japan seems to really have a boner for American rasslers.

Is the Ishii match or the tag match with Shibata worth watching?

Was it ever established why Devitt left? Unless he's going to WWE then I don't understand why he would leave. TNA is an embarrassment.

New Japan have been very careful since Brock fucked them over 8 years ago. There hadn't been a gaijin champion since. That and Yujiro interfering in the match to cost the champion... I guess you could say they're bold moves but part of me just thinks they hold AJ in a higher regard than they should.

I think it's more to do with Okada not having many more real challengers right now, the plan seems to be Nakamura vs Okada at the dome and between then and now who can he face that he hasn't already beaten? Shibata is the only one I can think of.

Genuine question, why is the top title called IWGP and not simply NJPW.

The International World Grand Prix is the "governing body" of NJPW.

Just like the GHC in NOAH then? Or is that completely different? Japanese wrestling hurts my brain.

The idea always was that Japan had NWA and AWA and WWF belts because of working agreements with those promotions. So whenever they made their own belts they'd give them fictitious, well more you know what I mean there, governing bodies like the PWF or IWGP or GHC or something like that to mimic the NWA.

This will make some people happy. From the Observer's review of the show

Ishii is probably the best big match wrestler in the world right now

Ishii has been hot for almost a year now. Top 5 wrestler in the world right now...and considering Tanahashi has taken a step back on the card, Okada is involved with Bullet Club, and Danielson is involved with fuckin Kane...he might just very well be the best big match wrestler in the world, putting on big matches at nearly every major event for New Japan and delivering.
