Fargo - An FX Original Series

Starring Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman.

Only just heard about this now, watched a couple of commercials and I'll be tuning in for the first episode. Fucking loved Fargo and it looks like it's keeping in the same weird spirit, if a bit more overtly comical.

Another anthology thing, which is fine by me. Pretty cool cast to boot:

Yeah pretty fucking stoked, you betcha, I'm gonna be out but my DVR is set. An hour and a half premier to boot.

The reviews have been great. Can't wait.

What a start. This has me hooked. I am not one to get hooked on tv series honestly. Breaking Bad and The Office were really the only 2 shows that I watched each week. This is getting added to the list.

Yeah this episode completely sold me on it. I hope it can keep it up.

They got 2.65 million viewers for the initial premier and 4.15 million for the night.

After catching up on the season openers of Mad Men/Game of Thrones I spotted this on the site I was using so naturally clicked through not knowing at all what to expect as I hadn't heard anything about it. What a pleasant surprise, it was more engrossing than either of the two aforementioned. Was a bit weird to see Martin Freeman in this role at first but that didn't last long. He was great. Hell of a first episode and I can't wait to see if they can top it.

    EPISODE 1 SPOILERS:

I liked it a lot but I wasn't quite as enamored as you guys seem to have been. I feel like the success of Breaking Bad directly paved the way for this show as it's very similar in theme (a boring guy with a boring life who's always getting stepped on decides to change his life and start breaking rules). Although maybe a better way to say that is: Breaking Bad was very Fargo-esque in its theme (with Walter White being a more successful and smart version of William H Macy) and now it's come full circle with Fargo being adapted for television. Anyway, this show obviously had the main character break bad a lot sooner than Walter White (who never killed anyone innocent for several seasons) - and to be honest I thought it felt a little rushed for him to kill his wife just because she was being kinda bitchy to him. Billy Bob's character was a cool and aloof killer - like Bad Santa meets Anton Chigurh - but I hope he gets fleshed out more.

I liked it a lot but I would have to disagree that it was more engrossing than the season premieres of Mad Men or Game of Thrones. This to me seemed cool and certainly very violent but fairly shallow. Don't get me wrong I'm eager to see where it goes from here but the premiere didn't make me think this will be on the level of the great dramas that have been on tv recently.

Don't get me wrong - it doesn't have the depth of a Mad Men or GoT but I've been following those series for years and that would be saying a hell of a lot. I liked both premieres but wasn't as enamoured with them as I have been in seasons past. This show was a pleasant surprise and it felt really refreshing. I was drawn in within minutes.

I've watched the first episode, but have never seen the film. Should I go ahead and do that before continuing with this do you think?

I don't think that's necessary, I don't believe there's a direct connection to the movie (although I wouldn't be surprised if they include some Easter eggs).

The movie is great tho so you should watch it anyway

I would watch the film right away. This show is borrowing the style of the film and it eventually might look like old hat in comparison.

Should I be making the 20 minute footwalk to my folks house every week to see this?

I was sceptical until I saw Freeman in the preview, he looks genuinely amazing.
    Watch then I guess?

I had the first couple of episodes on my DVR and I finally got around to watching them this weekend. It's good stuff and I'll probably watch the next new episode the same day it airs.

Interesting episode last night. I like the connection to the film. After Stavros had the red ice scraper framed I was a little iffy about the show being too connected to the film, so I'm glad that it appears that Stavros wasn't directly involved with the events of the film and he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

By the way, the bit at the start about how it's all from a true story is just part of the show's schtick isn't it? Hard to believe that it would be true given how elaborate it is in places.

Throwback to the movie where they put that in as well and some reporters believed it without doing basic fact checking.

I think this is a fantastic show. Now, is it going to be a mini-series or will there be a season 2?

I believe it's an anthology similar to True Detective. New actors and new story next season.

I have never seen Fargo (1996) though just this past weekend I picked it up really cheap, so it's sat on my "to be watched" shelf. After realising Martin Freeman is part of the TV series I think I may have to speed the process up of watching the movie and getting my self ready for the show.

    AWESOME EPISODE.

This show.... Fuck. It's amazing. Might pass True Detective even.

The movie itself is one of my all time favorites and a must watch for anyone who likes movies.

This series, I think when all is said and done may actually surpass it.

    Episode 9 spoiler:
I was stoked for this series to start just because it's the Fargo universe, it's on FX and they don't fuck around, and Freeman and Billy Bob being attached to it meant it was gonna be a big deal.

I couldn't imagine just how fucking awesome it would be.

Just finished the finale. From start to end this show was nearly fucking perfection.

    Absolutely astounding. Holy shit.

Just watched the finale. Absolutely loved it. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through and kept me guessing.

Freeman and Thornton were both stellar throughout the series. Great job all round.

One thing I noticed (nitpicking to the extreme) but they kept listing the story as having occurred in 2006, but towards the end of the series they jumped 18 months...

I asked this before, but does anyone know if this actually did all happen (as it says), or whether that was just a stylistic choice to introduce the show?

I believe that the true story thing is just to help with the tone.

I had no issue with it at all, as I said just nitpicking that they didn't say something like "between 2006-2008" at the start.

    http://www.tv.com/shows/fargo/commun...-140598663293/
During their conversation, Lou recalled the details of a case from back when he was a state trooper, a deadly massacre that occurred in 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
    “Bodies?” Malvo inquired.
“Yes sir, one after another,” Lou replied. “Probably if you stacked them high, could’ve climbed to the second floor. I saw something that year I ain’t ever seen before or ever since. I’d call it animal except animals only kill for food.” And then he asked Malvo, “Sioux Falls, ever been?”

It was a curious exchange, one that led some fans of the show to wonder whether Malvo could've been responsible for the carnage Lou had witnessed so many years before. But while the identity of the killer or killers is still unknown, it likely won't remain that way, because Fargo's newly announced second season will take place in 1979 in Sioux Falls, executive producer and writer Noah Hawley announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Monday.

"If you were paying attention in Season 1, we made a lot of references to Sioux falls," Hawley said. "That was deliberate." He went on to confirm that Fargo's next "10-hour movie" will pre-date the original film, with the bulk of the story set in Laverne, Minnesota.
And yes, it will indeed involve a young Lou Solverson. Young Lou is "a 33-year-old man recently back from Vietnam," Hawley said. He noted that we'll also meet Molly's mother, who was not a character in Season 1, and we "may learn what happened to her."
I was kind of hoping this would happen.

I'm glad they're going this route. I like the idea of the different seasons being connected together in small ways, in the same universe, and being able to go back through the links in the chain to the film.

The first was so fucking amazingly brilliant and I can only hope this comes close to it, just like I hope True Detective is going to come anywhere near close to the first.

I'm gonna watch the entire series again before the new iteration. So, so, so good.

Yeah... the foundation is laid beautifully (not just talking about Kirsten), but that one thing I was talking about was definitely odd. It made me check to see if I was watching the right show.

While the first season was extremely stylishly like a Coen Brothers film and I wouldn't have been surprised if they had directed it, this episode felt like more of a divergence. While it was still most definitely Fargo, the direction and editing were more, I dunno, progressive I'd say. From the title sequence to the fancy cuts to the intense music, it didn't feel quite exactly like the Coen brothers, but not in a bad way. It was immaculately written and directed.

Yea I honestly don't know where that's going but by the end of the episode I had forgotten about it.

Perhaps it will tie into the conspiracy theorist, Nick Offerman.

Mike Mulligan... the character itself feels too much like Billy Bob Thornton's character from the first season. Or at least they're trying too hard to make him act like it. I don't know what it is, maybe the actor or his dialogue... but he annoys me. He talks way too much, which is probably just to contrast his two voiceless henchmen. But Mike's the only part of the episode that bored me.

I've seen both of the episodes so far and can't figure out what the deal is with the WHAT. Could someone spoiler it for me?

I enjoyed them both and particularly happy with the casting.

Are you talking about the potential extraterrestrial occurrence? If so, none of us have an answer and we're all waiting to see how it plays out.

No I mean I didn't even know what you were talking about. Now I know you're talking about possible aliens. Although I don't remember that bit.

This show is so friggin good. It's the kind of show that should have a Breaking Bad-like following but doesn't yet. I hope people get on board so we can keep having more seasons. I honestly think it's ahead of GoT for best drama going.

And I really need Kirsten Dunst's character to have a glorious death.

It really has been fantastic. It's already as good if not better than last season.
