Just listened to the new Experience and was excited for it because Cornette was going to review mania. The podcast was 1 hr 52 mins long but the first 70 minutes was Jim complaining about what he had to eat for the last week so by the time he got to the show he was clearly tired and no longer gave a fuck. Still a fun show but a little dissapointing.

Jesus did anybody listen to Something to Eat With Conrad Thompson this past week?

Fuck my life. They were supposed to be doing Austin 98/99 which is some prime topic for discussion. Unfortunately Conrad was eating chips throughout the entire two hour and twenty minute show. And drinking soda. And unwrapping candy. All about one inch from the mic it sounded like. Granted he was having to phone in his side from a hotel room in Vegas this week but still.

Conrad - So chat me up here. What did Austin have to say about that?

Bruce - ...well the first thing (CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH)...he did was go and Cornette was like I wanna DOUBLE CHEESE (CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH....*POP* *FIZZZZZZZZZZ* GURGLE GURGLE GURGLE)...the next thing we knew Austin was flat out making out with this guy and then (CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH)

As a matter of fact I was listening to this podcast as I opened this thread and found the constant SLURPP andCRINKLE

to be much worse than the usual CLANK of the ice in his drink

They are normally so much better than this

It sounded like he was playing with casino chips if anything. It was like he was sitting at a poker table just playing with his chips like all poker players do

Yeah that's the downside of these things. They're not going to stop and go "We better check to see how this is sounding!" Especially now with Bruce being back in the WWE full-time. I'm pretty far behind, I'm currently listening to the WM 20 episode and I HATE when podcasts do phone-in's because if you don't have a good program to clean that shit up, it's very hard to listen to at a reasonable volume at work lol.

Conrad and JR started their new podcast setup this week. Pretty much the same setup as Conrad's other shows where it is referencing Newsletters, books, and etc. It was alright. I think Ross will provide a different angle of the inner workings of where he worked. Seemed decent enough.

Someone on youtube made a comment that I have to 100% agree with. Conrad Thompson has made us appreciate the "old school" more than anyone with the podcasts he's done pretty much since the Ric Flair podcast. But SMTW, 83 Weeks, WHW, now the JR show he's doing. All 4 offer 4 very different views behind the scenes. And they have offered us a level of appreciation and interest that again nobody has really been able to do.

I'd probably rank the second episode of JR's new podcast as the same as the first: alright. Certainly built on the formula Conrad has for his shows and certainly shows he's got a good formula and people want to listen to that rather than JR's meandering musings across the wrestling landscape. I'm just not sure if there was a ton of actual new content provided based on the first two topics. They weren't bad, but they didn't provide a ton of new insight. Some but not a lot, considering the length of the shows. I'll be interested to see if the conversation ever gets confrontational between Conrad and JR like it does on other Conrad podcasts. I can already get a feel that the bashing of Meltzer likely isn't as prominent on JR's podcast because he is a fan (and I think a subscriber) to Meltzer's newsletter.

My initial thoughts on the new Conrad/JR podcast:

Jim Ross needs to remember he's not the host. He's so used to doing a one-man show that he has a tendency to ramble on for 4-5 minutes at a time.

Conrad seems afraid to confront JR. Now maybe the topics just haven't presented it yet, but he definitely yields to JR wayyyyy more than he does to Bischoff, Bruce, or Schiavone.

But overall, I think it's a solid show and I'll keep listening.

They are feeling each other out. Right now there hasn't been anything to confront JR on. Maybe when they get to other topics where JR was in talent relations.

Shawn Spears (aka Tye Dillinger) was on E&C's pod. It was interesting to hear the genesis of the Perfect 10 gimmick and the outline of what happened to him getting called up, what happened after he got called up, and his eventual exit.

The host shouldn't be the one rambling on for 4-5 minutes though. Technically, they're co-hosts but you get the idea. I don't want to listen to a short 30 second answer if it requires more storytelling.

Nope, never said the host should ramble 4-5 minutes at a time. And in this case, I don't think they are co-hosts. Conrad is clearly the host since he does nothing but ask questions and JR is the guest/analyst.

I'm fine with longer answers when required, but JR definitely wandered at times and went on for a while.

You said JR has the tendency to ramble for 4-5 minutes, so I'm pointing out that if you think he talks to much why would Conrad be the one who should talk to much?

The fact of the matter is this isn't Conrad's show. It's both, so by default they are co-hosts. And nobody wants to hear Conrad talk more than Jim Ross so again, what is the issue with JR answering questions and giving his take, whether it's long-winded or not is irrelevant to you thinking he shouldn't be talking as much.

It's not like the hosts of The Tonight Show need to carry the conversation when a guest is siting in the chair with them. I don't get why one would think that the host needs to carry the majority of the conversation. You're wanting to hear from the guest. So the proper setup is the co-host situation where they both go back and forth, with one carrying the conversation and then the other replies accordingly. If anything, JR's issue (which may be just a thing I'm picking up) is that he doesn't necessarily have a vibrancy to his voice that comes across in the way that the other Conrad podcasts have so if he has a longer story, it can really dip in terms of projecting the story.

If I think JR rambles too much, that doesn't mean I think Conrad should talk more. What part of this can't you understand? They are in no way related. And I never once suggested Conrad should talk as much. Realistically, it should be 90% JR and 10% Conrad. My issue was with JR rambling on about things like breakfast, which add nothing to the conversation, and are not funny sidebars like you get with Prichard.

Yes, JR should talk way more. I'm saying I would prefer a 15 second question and a one minute answer, not a 15 second question and a five minute answer, unless the response requires it. And in my opinion, many of his 5 minute responses didn't require it.

Me neither, and since I never even remotely suggested that, I don't know who is? I think it should be 90-10 in favor of JR. Just think the show would flow better without his off-topic tangents (like you said, they are more mundane because of his delivery, which is probably why they seem annoying to me).

This week's episode of Grilling Jr was probably my favorite of the three but it really wasn't dramatically better (to me, at least) compared to the other two.

Next week will be interesting with the Over the Edge 1999 PPV and everything surrounding that.

Yeah I've enjoyed the last two more than the debut episode. I'm very curious to see how they address Over the Edge 99.

Titus O’Neil has to be one of the most positive-thinking people in the world. He was really refreshing to listen to on E&C’s pod this week.

What is the best podcast that keeps up with the current product? Let's say in the similar vein at Wrestling Observer, I just can't afford to pay for WO when the podcast scene is free and probably putting out content that is just as good if not better due to the fact Dave and Brian and Vinny are sooo burnt out most of the time.

I think Wade Keller's pw torch has a free podcast.

    - - - Updated - - -

if you search Dave Meltzer or Wade Keller on youtube you should be able to find some clips on there as well.

Sam Roberts does a week in review in the middle of his shows. He generally hits all the big stuff.

I like full show rundowns as I don't always have time for every single minute of 8 hours of WWE programming. I could look into Sam though

Funny enough, but for me the easiest and most fun way to keep up with the current product is watching Jack The Jobber's Top 10 Wrestlers of The Week on Cultaholic. Its not a blow-by-blow breakdown of every show, but it covers the 10 best matches of the week and gives a good rundown of who to watch out for.

He is the biggest drawback to his own show.

I just cant stand how unrelentingly positive he is about every choice WWE makes.

He's the polar opposite of Wade Keller and it's just as irritating.

I listen to what these podcasters have to say via sound bytes and youtube clips. And the one with Bully Ray seems to be decent.
Not sure how listening to the whole show would turn out though.

The Jericho podcast with Ambrose/Moxley was really good. You know it's not sour grapes because he left on his own and with a decent send off. Its 1.5 hours. Give it a listen

If people were looking for anything other than the obvious you're wasting your time. I wasn't shocked by anything he said. This wasn't like CM Punk's interview at all. I think a lot of fans are trying to draw comparisons, they're not there.

We all knew half the shit he was doing was corny and we knew why it was corny. Him validating that might help some people but for me it was just a chill interview. Him saying that WWE's creative process sucks isn't news. But it's not to say that people haven't benefited from the overall system and he did praise them.

Aye. This Hulk shoot is class.

Edit-it'd be cool if we could hear his thoughts on Kento Miyahara. Psh.

I find Austin's hosting varies depending on who he has got on and how much he can relate to them. When he's interviewing old school guys or people he obviously respects then I find his shows to be fascinating and really entertaining. Looking forward to hearing this one.

    I listen to 9000 podcasts a week.

The number one greatest episode of any podcast ever is the Steve Austin podcast with guests Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows.

Conrad announced he’ll be creating another podcast and the person he’ll be recording with will be Arn Anderson.

I want to be interested in this one I really do so why am I having trouble finding it?

You have a guy who is a class act, great on the mic, UNDERRATED as fuck when it comes to discussing the best wrestlers of all time. He was an agent for many years with the WWE and I'm sure helped out quite a bit post-retirement in WCW.

I bet once we get the first episode I'll be digging it. The only podcast Conrad's done that I didn't get soaked in was the WHW with Schiavone. He's a funny guy that Tony but he offers almost nothing other than agreeing with Conrad lol.

Yeah, I quit listening to the Schiavone show a long time ago. Not a lot of interesting content, and the shows are really long because they're always doing watch alongs.

I feel like the Bischoff show has just about run its course, feel like they've covered all the big WCW stuff. I'm curious if Bischoff will keep doing it for long now that he's back with WWE.

I've enjoyed the JR show so far. A very different tone from the other shows, very much just JR and Conrad chilling out and chatting. The difference in how JR talks about Meltzer compared to the other guys is amazing. JR occasionally says something is inaccurate but seemingly 90% of the time says it's correct. Bischoff finds a way to disagree with literally everything Meltzer reported and Prichard will usually find a way to say something is wrong.

Something to Wrestle is still running strong. They're clearly on a tight schedule with Bruce being back with WWE and Conrad having so many podcasts but I don't think it's really hurting the show, it's just forcing them to keep the shows shorter. No more five hour episodes.

I keep waiting for Conrad to start an ECW podcast but I guess he hasn't found the right partner. He said he reached out to Joey Styles and Styles didn't want to do it. Heyman must not be interested either. Tommy Dreamer could probably use a payday.

Tommy is the only real person to do it.

Paul would lie too much. Raven wouldn't remember shit. Neither would Sandman. Tommy was there the whole time, wasn't drugged out of his head and seems like an honest guy.

Tommy is still kicking it on the Indie scene, but when he hangs up the boots, he'd be a great choice.

What Happened When is my favorite of them all. It gives me a couple hours of good laughs. I don't even watch along. I just listen to them banter back and forth.

I don't need every wrestling podcast to give me inside information. I get that with STW etc. This one just gives me a good laugh. Nothing wrong with that

Looks like WWE is getting in the podcast game. The Hollywood Reporter released a story indicating WWE is partnering with Endeavor Audio to create a network that will feature series focused on the wrestlers. FWIW, Endeavor already works with The Bellas on their podcast. THR indicated more info will come when available.

Only two podcasts that I am on right now:-

Something to Wrestle with Bruce & Conrad

    The Lawcast @The Law @Cewsh

Really enjoy them both, Conrad still busts Bruces balls and calls him out on stuff. I teared up on the Gorilla one they did. The Sunny one was very good, the Russo, JR and Cornette ones are also excellent.

Law and Cewsh have a good chemistry that has been build up over time. I do enjoy it when they crack up over something crappy that WWE have done. Good job guys

Was listening to an old OSW podcast about WMX7 the other day and heard something I'd not heard before - apparently in the main event the WWE put Rock's mum and Stone Cold's brother next to each other in the front row to add drama, but had to drop the little addition to the angle after Stone Cold's brother got too into the match and started aggressively insulting Rock's mum, to the extent that Stone Cold had to go and personally apologise to her after the match

Grillin JR is starting to become one of my favorite podcasts. I am over 83 Weeks. They went over all of the interesting WCW stuff. I guess all that's left is Eric's TNA shit show run. and conrad isn't really too combative with eric anymore.

The After the Bell podcast with Corey Graves has potential. It's clear that things are fair game for right now, fan backlash, mentioning AEW, Ospreay, Omega from Rollins...Bálor returning to NXT and the idea of that happening more in the future from Triple H, and more things from Bayley and Ric Flair.

There's clearly a filter but there's probably enough there, there to give a perspective that's worth listening to.

It's truly insane it took WWE this long to get into podcasts. They can make most of the guests people want to hear exclusive to their shows.

Imagine if Vince did a series of podcast interviews. Those would have to be the most downloaded wrestling podcasts of all time. Would be amazing to hear him tell his story.

I remember having an idea that they should produce a series of podcasts on each Wrestlemania with a different guest on each one who was part of the show. Like get Hogan to talk about Wrestlemania III, Austin for 17. Vince for Wrestlemania I if he would do it, otherwise probably Patterson.

Obviously people love wrestling history podcasts, you could do a series where every week they're talking about a different show or storyline or time period with someone who was there for it.

Kind of a funny episode, but Bruce Prichard and Conrad just did an episode of Something... on WCW Halloween Havoc 1998. Big show, big matches, hot period. Makes sense, right?

Yeah... except that Brother Brucie never worked for WCW. It’s a weird idea to have Bruce go two hours on a company he never worked for and wrestlers he didn’t know.

Conrad has done a lot of those episodes of having his guys watch shows from competing companies. I've not liked them very much. I don't really think Bischoff or Prichard have terribly interesting philosophies or perspectives on wrestling, I just like hearing their stories. So when you remove their first hand knowledge of what happened, it takes what I'm interested in hearing out.

I just skipped the Halloween Havoc episode. Haven't listened to the Moolah episode yet either, don't want to hear Bruce whitewash her history.

I'm kind of amazed Bruce is continuing to do the show while he's running Smackdown. I can't believe he's finding the time with the hours he's got to be putting in.

I think the Halloween Havoc watch a long has been taken off the feed. Conrad said it was the worst episode ever and he's ashamed of it so I wouldn't be surprised. I'll listen when I get a chance. STW and Jim Cornette's Drive Thru are the only two where I've listened to every epsisode.

Bálor was on the After the Bell podcast with Graves. Certainly interesting to hear more of his comparison as to benefits of NXT versus the main roster and how those differences work for different people. He sounds rejuvenated.

He was also asked about a Bullet Club reunion in WWE and he talked about how that was several years ago and he doesn't want to run the risk of having it be flatter than many expected that could be. In another interview, he mentioned this in terms of who he'd like to work with: “There are a couple people I’ve been thinking about. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’m very, very, very interested in AOP. Those two guys are two of the meanest guys in this business. If I have a chance to create a Bálor Club in any brand, I’d want those guys backing me up.”

Arn Anderson's new podcast with Conrad Thompson is interesting. I've only heard the first episode, but Arn seems like a straight shooting kind of guy, if not a little boring. He's clearly not super comfortable doing all this "technology stuff" and even says "I'm not a computer geek" and credits his wife (of 35 years) in helping to get the whole thing set up.

There's one really great story on the first episode about Arn getting into a fight with Matt Bourne - the future Doink The Clown - in a hotel room and then crashing with Larry Zybysko afterward. That's, largely, the first time any marks would've heard about that fight as the story isn't well known.

Graves had Hunter and HBK on his pod this week. I found it interesting that Triple H has obviously had more on his plate since NXT went to USA and he noted that HBK has stepped up more in the sense of monitoring NXT UK, including making trips out there for the tapings and such. They have a crew there that really handles the ins and outs but it sounds like HBK has taken Triple H's role in terms of overseeing the product. Triple H also mentioned guys they see a vision of being trainers/coaches/agents are getting that ability to build that foundation now. An example he noted was Ciampa. He's going to Evolve and doing autograph signings but he's doing a lot of production/backstage work with that talent to help develop that side of their brain for when he eventually becomes a different kind of asset for NXT.

Graves asked them individually if they were in their prime, who they would hypothetically have a Mania match with from the NXT talent pool. HBK said Gargano, Dream, and Bálor. Triple H said Gargano, Ciampa, Dream, Bálor, Lee. For deep cuts, he mentioned Cameron Grimes and Swerve Scott. Both said Adam Cole was another one. HBK did mention in passing that Bryan, Styles, and McIntyre were main roster guys he'd pick.

Corey Graves went aggressive on this week's Raw during his podcast. He railed against the fact that Liv Morgan was being built up as a big deal for weeks and was ultimately rag dolled by Lana. He also mentioned how the Rusev/Lashley storyline has been treated as a big deal but the match was ultimately met with silence from the crowd, which is the least-desired response. He used that angle as a depiction of WWE trying to go back to the Attitude Era but missing the crux of what made that era great.

"The things about the Attitude Era that we miss are not cheesy, Jerry Springer storylines, and four-letter words, and boobs. The Attitude Era was awesome because you had a bunch of superstars who were allowed to figure things out, allowed to be themselves, allowed to connect and weren't pigeonholed or forced into these garbage circumstances. Every once in awhile, there was a terrible storyline, but people made it work because you could laugh at yourself. It was tongue and cheek. The talent made each other better. It was a competition, night after night. You had to figure out how to survive. There were a ton of awful, horrendous storylines. Mae Young gave birth to a hand. There was Katie Vick. Some of the worst storylines in the history of the business took place in the Attitude Era. But as a whole, the business was on fire because everyone had to step up, even if you were in a garbage circumstance, you had an opportunity to make your own path. That's what we need, that's what we as fans miss from the Attitude Era. Not crude storylines, lewdness, 'puppies' and jokes like that. More action and guys who are badasses allowed to be badasses and be entertaining."

At the time it was cosidered post attitude. But I think in hindsight we can see that "attitude" was present for years after wm 17. The Hot Lesbian Action Eric Bischoff stuff, for instance, was also 2002/3. And we were still watching half naked women wrestle in pudding for a few more years as well.

This is what WWE seem to have forgotten. And they rewrite their own history so often who can blame them? But they didn't stop doing lewd, sexist stuff and then the ratings went down. The ratings went down while they were still doing that stuff. So they made (and rightly so) the decision to make the shows more kid friendly.

Because if the numbers are the same anyway, why alienate kids and families from watching?

At any rate Corey hit the nail on the fucking head with those remarks. He must feel REALLY comfortable with his job security.

I think Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair could have a fantastic bikini Jello match. They should try it sometime.

Let them work, and the bikini aspect would be immaterial.

He must feel REALLY comfortable with his job security.
you can argue the ratings went down because guys like Rock and Austin weren't really wrestling anymore or part time in Rock's case. I wonder what caused those fans to leave from 2000-2002. Like what made them say, I am not watching anymore. did they go to college or get full time jobs and families? did they say ehh not interested in the stories anymore? I would say maybe Russo's writing going away but the year 2000 was a hot year without him or Austin for most of the year

It likely wasn't any one thing. Wonky central storylines (I know I zoned out a lot during the 'who owns WWE' stuff from that time when Vince, then Flair, then ??? 'owned the company'. It just got monotonous). Big stars coming and going like Rock and Austin. Corporate sponsorship and the threats of boycotts must have weighed heavily on those in the board room AND the writers room. Lack of big WCW guys that fans anticipated seeing. The MNW thrived on there being competition to an extent, and once they blew their load with the Invasion, there wasn't much else to say in regards to that. Hell, even the sheer fact that there was more and more across the dial to watch was a distraction. A lot of different nails shut the coffin on the AE.

I used to thin it was multiple reasons.

Now I just think it's as simple as No Rock/No Austin = Nobody watching.

I say maybe some time into 2003 might have been it. 2002 was still fucking great especially with the Smackdown Six. Not to be one of those guys but HHH was on top for a long time. Mania 19 was a great product but Austin had his last match, heel Rocky was not as present and though you had Goldberg, I think he came in too late and didn’t have nearly the impact he could’ve had say if he joined the Invasion.

Just a theory though. However toning down on the edginess I think did factor into it.

After hearing the new Corny's Drive-Thru, I'll say this, we might not know for sure if Tessa Blanchard is a racist.

... but we know she's full of shit.

Tessa doing fecalphilia fetish videos is like Mickie James going back to spider-monkeying off the ceiling and jerking guys off with her feet.

I'm shook, a little afraid, and I'll never look at my toilet the same way again.

Graves had Rousey on his podcast. She said she's happy with what the women's division as a whole is doing since she left, and she's enjoying her time away. The biggest things she misses are the live events. She's very happy with what NXT is doing with their women's division. If things could line up, Rousey would love to have a match with Rhea Ripley. She also said that she thinks Charlotte should challenge Ripley at Mania, putting more of a spotlight on NXT and provide a fresh match. No timetable on when Rousey will return.

Jericho had Hall, Bischoff, DDP, and Booker T in front of a live crowd to talk about the NWO. Pretty good listen except for some of the audio issues.

Thought I'd check out the Arn Anderson podcast with Conrad and so far it's been great. Arn is much more likeable than Bruce, Bischoff and JR (these days anyway) and I don't find myself rolling my eyes at him like I do with them. He's super modest too. Just listened to the one on the 2015 Royal Rumble. Arn mostly agrees with your average wrestling fan and when Conrad asks him if Vince doubled down and went with Roman despite everything just to spite the fans who wanted something different, he agrees it was something of a power trip. As an aside, a post on reddit highlighting a Vince quote from the Q4 2014 conference call:

Vince McMahon responded to the 2015 Royal Rumble backlash as a "vocal minority" and that they complain but will keep watching. Since then, Raw viewership has dropped 50% overall and dropped 60% in the 18-49 demo.

Charlotte challenging Rhea for Mania, Rhea retaining, and Rousey returning to challenge Rhea would be the best thing ever.

I think Rousey going to Full Sail to challenge Ripley would be a bridge too far in Vince's eyes, I imagine. If you put it on Raw, it seems a little disjointed. You can point out that Cole defended the NXT title on Smackdown but there were extenuating circumstances that led to that. If they did the first scenario, I'd be intrigued as hell to see it play out.

After building Rhea Ripley up for so long, consistently protecting her and making her a big deal, the last thing I want to see is Ronda Rousey show up, go to NXT, and beat her.

    It just wouldn't feel right.

Charlotte beating her and then getting a post-Wrestlemania run out of it, with Rhea debuting on the main roster would feel so much better.

Arn is great and is definitely the most likable along with Tony. Eric and Bruce get on my nerves sometimes. Jim Ross getting pissed off always makes me laugh

I stopped listening to 83 weeks as soon as E got the WWE job.

I just assumed the level of ass kissery and butt coverage would get to be too much for me to listen to. How is it these days?

Ehhh.... Because they are working around his complete lack of recall, it gets very repetitive because they have to focus on the very small amount of things that actually are in his wheelhouse.

It's probably my least favourite of the Conrad shows.
