I had this, and Aftermath and Retaliation.

I didn't vote for it, because the second game got my vote. But still a very good game.

How the fuck did nobody else vote for The Sims?

That's one thing about Top PC Game list. There are so many great games because the lifespan of PC is well...infinite basically. So many different years and "eras" to choose from.

This thread has made me redownload old games.

Spent the past week playing Tiberian Sun and Theme Hospital. Good times.

Also, about Doom II, it's the one that I played first, and most people might have if they got near someone else's PC in the 90s like I did, but I played through it recently and it almost seems like a parody of Doom 1. Some of the later levels are really bizarre and it's nice that they play about with the limits of the engine, but it doesn't necessarily mean a good Doom experience.

Yeah, Sim Theme Park was the sequel. I loved the ball sitting on top of a smaller ball guy. He's really friendly and his pop ups aren't too annoying. He made rides breaking down less painful.

Can't believe I was the only person who voted for Day of the Tentacle and X-Wing Alliance.

Civ2 was a class game back in the day, the city advisors cracked me up:

Well of course, but in the final mission you
    which made your character...

And of course the graphics were prettier, and the music was better quality.

Yea. I got the points and the spot right, but missed how many votes there were.

I loved Civ II, but it was a PS1 game for me. It was my introduction to the series as well.

I'll fix that tomorrow. It will bump it up the loser runners-up side, but still far away from making the "List"

I'm the only vote for Morrowind? Genuinely shocked that wasn't on any other list. Also, like stylepoints, quite surprised at HL2 being so low. This list is going to be quite unpredictable.

    Wow, didn't see that coming.

HL2 is kind of a strange beast though. It's top 3 on pretty much every "best PC games ever" list, but at the same time, everyone I talk to about it feels like it's overrated.

Given that we just voted it in at 17, I guess we consider it overrated as well.

I love it - but it wasn't on my list.

Highest vote: 8th. Seems we really do see it as a bit overrated if that's its top number. I wonder if waiting 10 years for a sequel has cooled some of the enthusiasm for it.

Half-Life 2 was bloody great, it just didn't have the same kind of impact with the game that the original did (obviously being the birth of Steam it had a massive impact of PC gaming). I imagine we'll see the original as top 5, even though the sequel is arguably a better game.

Half-Life 2 fell flat for me. I wonder if there was this collective moment where everyone had the same thought but then accepted that it goes in a high position. I really liked how the handled the manhack flying enemies, the rest of the game was a very safe sequel to Half-Life 2, and a lot maybe relied on the new gimmick of the havok physics engine.

I figured Half-Life 2 would be obnoxiously high and left it off. For me, it lost appeal after playing Portal and just feeling that the smaller game was so much better with the physics and, well, everything that I stopped caring about Half-Life quite a bit.

TIE Fighter is one of the best games of all goddamn time.

I never understood the love for HL2 at all. I don't like it. My main gripe with the game(to make a long story short), is that enemies don't react to anything you do. They just kinda soak up bullets, and that really bugs the shit out of me. I started playing FPSs with Wolfenstein 3D, so, I know that we weren't always afforded the luxury of expressive enemies, but when I moved to Goldeneye, and people actually reacted to when you shot them in a specific body part, HL2 felt like a huge step back to me. I guess it's so highly rated for its physics engine? But that doesn't mean anything to me. No sir, I don't like it.

This for me. HL2 was extraordinary when it was first released but that came with the appeal of the original if you ask me.

Okay, 1st thing is that I never said Alliance was better than TIE fighter, I said I was surprised that no-one else voted for it. Secondly, I considered HL2 more as a PS2 game than PC, otherwise it would have made my list (lower half admittedly, but still)

I guess most people voted Sim City 2000? For whatever reason I never cared for that one. Fuck water pipes.

I have zero interest in RTS - mostly on account of being awful at them - so this wasn't ever considered for me.

Oh I am right shit at RTS games. My strategy is almost always amass an unstoppable force of one unit and move out.

Just because we discussed Theme Park/Sim Theme Park here...

Theme Park Studio was just released today. It's still an Early Release but the people that have played it seem very pleased. Finally, another proper park building game. Can't believe the genre is so thin.

When I think about the sheer number of hours I wasted playing RTS games back in the day, it utterly baffles me. C&C, StarCraft and Warcraft but Age of Empires II especially.

I think years of my life went to those games if it's added up. I'm probably an honorary South Korean.

I'd happily fire up Red Alert 2 now, fuck it I think I might.

I loved being allied and just having a base surrounded with deployed GI's, normally always get promoted instantly.

They were really good at defending. But I played Soviets approximately 90% of the time.

Really? I always went for Allied.

And I actively thought Allied were at a massive advantage.

Real advantages don't matter in the face of Tesla Cannons and Blimps

    Why the boo Mike?

I didn't vote Civ V but I sure do suck at it.

I've logged more game time in Civ 5 than any other PC game. Thought this would be a bit higher though.

Civ 5 is very good. I'm surprised at where it landed as well. Same with HL.

I never liked Civ 5 all that much, until I saw the box art. There's artillery firing at pyramids, now I like it.

I think Civ 5 will be one the highest ranking modern games. It's the only PC game released in the last 5 years or so that I've actually played for any length of time. I imagine that for many posters voting here the PC won't be their main way to play games (most having a console) so it'll only be PC exclusives such as Civ or Football Manager which'll have enough votes to rank highly.

I put Civ 5 above Civ 4, but I think Civ 4 may still appear in a higher slot.

Civ V is the shit, I know most people prefer IV but I hate stacks of doom so V is more enjoyable for me.

Steam tells me I have played it for 271 hours.

I hope someone cast a vote for one of the Europa Universalis games.

    Wow, where to start..

It's a similar genre to RTS but you decide where to place cities/defences as well and you need a wider strategy. Also because it is turn based you have more time to plan things out and there is no mad rush to defeat your enemies.

Back in the day, I spotted Europa Universalis sitting on top of the garbage clearance bin at checkout at Barnes and Noble for $1 and figured, "Alright, it's a strategy game for a $1, why not?"

Good lord almighty, the single best $1 I ever spent.

For some reason I was hell-bent on getting England to conquer and annex all of France, after I'd dealt with the Scots and Irish, before expanding the empire to the Americas and killing all the natives.

This went on for quite a while until I realized all of the riots and revolts were too much of a pain in the ass.

tp, if Rog's description, which is accurate, gives you a hard on you need to give it a go.

I haven't played beyond EU2, which throws even MORE shit you have to manage than the first and is better. I just got into Steam so I may just get the newest one because why wouldn't I want to waste hours of my life on it.

Play Civ before playing EU though. I've only looked at how to play EU and I've been more than confused.

As I said I do suck at strategy games though. That's my biggest problem with Civ. I suck so much at it. But when you're playing you lose hours of time without realizing it. Always, oh just one more turn so I can finish that research, then it's waiting for building to be built.

It's the multi tasking in RTS that I suck at... the turn based nature of Civ I am much more adept at. Not brilliant or anything but I can lose a day in it.

    There's not much multi tasking.

At it's core it's build defence and attack.

Probably more relevant to Civ IV, but when finishing a session one of the options was just...one more turn. Never played 3 or 5.

I much prefer Civ IV. I have played V some, but found the art style awful and the game slimmed down and even more obsessed with combat than IV was. Combat's all well and good (and I even kind of like stacks of doom, why shouldn't blitzkrieg be a possible tactic?) but I want to have a broad variety of ways to win and not just get into a shooting match almost every time. Of course I only played the base game, maybe the million or so DLC additions make V a heck of a lot better, but I'm done with the rat race of having to pay three or four times to get the game I actually want. Will probably get the bundle in a Steam sale at some point though.

It's also that feeling of knowing exactly what you've got set-up, what you're planning to do on the next go and everything like that that you know you'll forget if you leave.

    Exactly.

I have only played Civ V with the two expansions. There are definitely more ways to win with GnK and BNW.

Never played WoW, but can't deny its impact.

I was one of the 2 votes for Dawn of War, but only voted it 15th. It was a fun one.

I think I was about 16 when WOW came out and I couldn't really afford the monthly fee to play it.

My brother in law had it and I played it for a couple of days and it was alright.

I then downloaded the free trial about 4 years later and played through to level 20 (where it let you) but it didn't move me enough to buy it.

I guess if I had mates that had played it I may have bought it.

It was my #1. It was what got me into PC gaming. I didn't grow up with a PC, so when I moved out I bought one. While I picked up a few game, I didn't enjoy gaming on PC until Dawn of War. I still don't enjoy the PC interface, and even when I attach a control it doesn't seem to make it better. But with RTS games the keyboard/mouse set up is THE set up for that genre.

You mean like maybe a humble bundle where you get Sid Meier’s Civilization III Complete, Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: The Complete Edition, Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol, Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies and Sid Meier’s Railroads!.... then if you pay more than the average price, you would also receive Sid Meier’s Civilization V and Sid Meier’s Civilization V: Gods and Kings expansion pack AND if you pay more than $15, you would also unlock Sid Meier’s Civilization V: Brave New World expansion pack.

Yeah, that was the humble bundle 2 weeks ago... For $15, that's one of the greatest bundles of all time.

Warcraft, very different game to WoW...

I didn't get the hype. I'd never played MMORPG's and my housemate and his broader circle of super nerd friends (cosplay and SCA... and not even remotely relevant, one of them used to be one of the "models" on camwhores) were hugely psyched for it. He took part in the closed beta and just went mad for it - locked away in his room for 15 hours a day, squeezing in classes and sleep around sessions. I watched him play a bit and just did not get the appeal.

Then it came out - and he went on holiday for 6 weeks and gave me his log in details. I dived in head first and played it entirely as a single player game. I saw bits of Diablo in it, albeit in an entirely different world, but obvious given who the devs were. And it was enough to get me to purchase and subscribe.

One of the mistakes I made (not that I really realised it till level 45+) was creating a character on a PvP server. Anyone that has played FIFA with me will have experienced my gaming ability which is worsened significantly due to the wonders of distance and the extra latency being in Australia gives. PvP sucked... but for the most part, you could avoid it and since there was no reward for it (at the time...), it wasn't a huge problem. Then a patch came out introducing honour...

I flew to Gadgetzan and went to get coffee and when I came back, I was dead. Looked at the combat logs and saw that I had been killed by some mage. Oh well, thought nothing of it so respawned. Then died. Had been killed by some hunter. Respawned. Died. Respawned. Died. After 30 minutes just trying to get my corpse back, I ragequit and unsubscribed for about 5 months. In that time off, they put in PvP Battlegrounds like Arathi Basin or Warsong Gulch which substantially reduced the mass ganking that bored L60's used to do. They also fixed up the guard structure in Gadgetzan that meant killing people inside the town was possible in the first place.

Then I re-subscribed and joined a carebear server and lost 4 years of my life Kind of like this place though, met people who are now fantastic real life friends, some that I see very rarely when they visit from the USA/Canada, a whole bunch of Australian's that I know I can always catch up with if I am ever in their part of the country and others that actually moved here because of people they met in our guild and they are now happily married with kids

I think it's pretty clear Solitaire and Minesweeper are going to take #1 and #2.

Just checked my list and I didn't vote for Crusader Kings II. Big mistake on my part. it should have been number 12.

I just lost my evening to it. It is so hard to get into but once you do you get so lost in the detail.

From 1066 to 1335 I have raised my characters from humble Dukes of Lancaster to Emperors of Britannica. When my latest guy's mum dies I get Norway and Iceland too.

That's one of the main reasons I never submitted a list myself. Too hard to compile one. A few games I do know I would've considered putting on my list are... Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Diablo II, Age of Mythology, Empire Earth II, Rise of Nations, Dungeon Keeper II, Majesty 2, Warlords Battlecry III, Anachronox, Shadowrun Returns, Path of Exile, Titan Quest, etc.

Just too many great games to list that I'd leave a ton out. My favorite PC game ever is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines though so I'm sure that would've been my #1.

Completely forgot about Bloodlines. That game was pretty rad. Kind of a shame that it came out after all the Vampire hype died down and Redemption disappointed.

Never played WoW - I know I'm one of those people who'd let their real life go to shit while planning another raid. However, it led to one of the most hilarious/egregious moments in gaming:

    THEME HOSPITAL.

I was waiting this to come up and had thought we got too far in the list for it to enter. Gutted it's been chucked out now.

    Great game and great humour.

I put so many hours into this and then some bug kept making it crash. It enrages me so much. Never did get to finish it.

Looking back, Monkey Island was probably a cheat becuase I played it on the Amiga (and then iPod) rather than PC. Ah well.
Theme Hospital was fun for a short time, but there was too much micromanagment in later level with doctors, handymen, machines all needing looking after at the same time.

I've been playing Theme Hospital for the past few days.

    It seems very easy.
